I didn't know it at the time, but my good friend in Texas has also visited this restaurant on the NW side of town. It's a family-owned business housed in an older style whataburger. They've changed the designs of whataburger restaurants many times since this style was last being built, if that gives you any idea how old the building is.
They're known for their sweet sourdough buns, among other things. They sell shirts which advertise this fact. Their menu is pretty simple and not too far from what whataburger puts on their menus. Burgers, a few other sandwiches and shakes.
Burger patties are 100% Angus beef, smashed thin, and 1/3 pound. I ordered the Big John, a specialty burger with green chili and lots of cheese, but made it a double and swapped the cheese for cheddar. I also added hand cut fries, a soft drink, and a chocolate shake. I am a sucker for burger restaurants that cut their own fries. This usually means they care about the quality of their burgers, too.
The burger is very tasty, and I finish it quickly, even at 2/3 lb. The small fries are definitely small, and I finish those even before the burger. Since the shakes are made with soft serve, they aren't all that... but they're priced right. I was only able to finish half the shake.
The one weird that happened was they started turning their signs on the door and window to "closed," and it was a full house at the time. I was wondering what was happening...bit it turns out their cooktop/grill had just gone out about halfway through my dining experience. They basically shut down the restaurant, and it was nearly cleared within 10 mins. Only me and 2 other tables were left finishing their meals.
However, it's a tasty burger for sure, and I would be happy to return if I was ever in the area again.
