Patty’s Tamales expands from Sunrise to the University District | Eater Vegas

"Serving a tightly focused tamale-only menu since late 2015, this small operation is known for to-go orders and a busy catering business for events and family occasions. It is expanding from its original location into a 1,200-square-foot space in the University Gardens retail center across Maryland Parkway from UNLV, replacing the long-shuttered El Santaneco a few steps from the post office; an opening date has not been announced. The menu lists tamales at roughly $2 each ($12 for six, $24 for a dozen) with non-spicy choices like chicken red, sweet corn and sweet corn with pineapple, and spicy varieties including chicken green, pork red, chicken in brown sauce, and cheese with peppers." - Bradley Martin

Google
Very good tamales! A little on the spicy side, so if you don’t like too spicy get the non spicy ones, I believe they have green chicken ones that are not spicy. I am very satisfied with my purchase! They are big and well filled!

Cathy

Google
So I usually go to a lady that sells tamales out of her Cart I’m guessing she’s no longer in business sadly I tried Patty‘s tamales in the past about a year ago and they were fine a little overpriced but they were good so I went back yesterday Saturday, 27 December and I only bought 16 of them they were highly overpriced and I ended up throwing them all away because they were awful disgusting the MASA had a funny weird taste to it. They were just horrendous. I would not even give them to a pet rat. They were that bad sadly, I will not go there again.

Google
I used to go here but now it’s just too much. The prices have slowly crept up. It says $3.81 for one tamale but what they’re not letting you know is the taxes is not there. It’s about $4.30 each tamale plus the charge for card. I just almost got charged $14 for three tamales mind you the tamales are not getting bigger unfortunately I’m gonna have to go somewhere else. If the prices are gonna go up, I expect my tamales to be bigger. And they’re not big at all the flavor of the food is only worth so much before the price becomes too much

Google
Tamales are delicious and quite large. Their prices have gone up and it was quite a shock. $50.00 for a dozen cheese Tamales. We hadn’t been there for a while and it seemed like they were more peppers in them. They had quite a kick to them.

Google
I love love love tamales so when I ran across this place I had to try. ! I had 1/2 dozen green chicken tamales were a good size, great taste ,perfect meat to masa ratio and spicy ! Though the tamales were great the lady at the counter wasn't very friendly and refused to speak in English so we could order. I asked if I could order with someone elese but she was the only one there. Pulled out Google translate usually helps with language barriers. Glad I got to experience good tamales! I'll be back with my Google translate!

iris E.

Google
Simply the best tamales in town! I love Patty's and everyone I share their tamales with is always impressed. I live closer to the other location that sadly was damaged, but am more than happy to make the drive!

Brittany H.

Google
Delicious tamales! My personal favorite was Queso con Rajas (cheese with peppers.) They also have beef tamales - which we're not on the menu. Inside is a no frill, no seating store front.

John P.

Google
WARNING... No Seating. There is no indoor (or outdoor) dining. This is a warning only. It is not meant to discourage those who want takeout.

Yelp
Great spot for tamales but you have to get here at a good time. I came later on in the evening and there was only one type of tamale available. Small interior but service is friendly.

julio y.

Yelp
All homemade tamales, green chicken has a nice little spice to it, prices seemed to have gone up however

Chris C.

Yelp
Great Tamales!! No English by the lady in the establishment which is frustrating but WOW the Tamales are GOOD
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Delicious tamales. Easy in and out. Friendly service. I enjoyed. The non spicy rojo chicken tamales the most as I can't handle spice. The folks that ate the spicy green and spicy pork tamales said they were fantastic too.

Alexis M.

Yelp
What year was the best customer service I've ever had in my life tamales were awesome. It was very very great. Javier was great.

Allison B.

Yelp
They are wonderful delightful staff. So delicious great Tamales. I give this company 10 stars very friendly

Dennis V.

Yelp
Awesome taste great and a huge variety of tamales, very good service. I've been getting them for months and have never been disappointed
google avatar

Pat T.

Yelp
I absolutely love the tamales here. I've been going here for years. Even though it's better to drive for me it's worth it without a doubt. I highly recommend them

Waldo M.

Yelp
Según muy mexicano, atendido por una cubana miy grosera, comiendo y hablando con la boca llena, despacha sin lavarse las manos despues de tocar el dinero. Horribe!!!

Yelp
Am I nitpicking because I want fruit tamales? The service was sweet and friendly with genuine smiles! The store is super super clean. I had a cheese and pepper tamale and I loved it. I'm a tamale girl and I miss my regular spots in Chicago. This is the first (because del taco that doesn't count) I've had since we moved here. To tell the truth, I've been spying the Patty's Tamales sign with eager anticipation saving them for a fix on a hard day. Today after walking out of another eating establishment fifty feet away (couldn't get their attention to order?) I was ready and I was not at all disappointed. I will be back.

Valerie C.

Yelp
the service was not good, they were rude and dismissive. the food wasn't the best either, the meat was dry and overpriced for what your getting. The ambiance didn't look clean there wasn't anywhere to sit, they were rushing for us to go.
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
The dry tamales aren't worth the additional fees they add on. With so much good Mexican food on the East Side of Las Vegas, I would recommend going elsewhere.

Yelp
I had been craving tamales for a few weeks prior to visiting Patty's Tamales. I just wanted tamales and not necessarily a full sit down dining experience. That is where it is nice to have a place like Patty's. You couldn't sit down even if you wanted to. There are no tables or chairs here. It is simply a store with a counter and a kitchen. And they make one type of food - tamales. They have a few different versions but the menu remains small. I ordered two tamales. One red pork and one green chicken. Both are listed as spicy. He gentleman working the store was quick to package them up and send me on my way. I made the mistake of trying to eat one on the road. It was hot and I was hungry. But between the paper wrapper and the corn husk, it was damn near impossible to open one handed. So I just fought the hunger and waited til I got home. I tried the pork first. It was indeed spicy. I didn't really notice it at first. And then the hiccups started. I guess it was spicy after all. It was also very oily. It took a napkin and a half to clean my hands and that was just from trying to open the dang thing. The chicken, by comparison, was a little less spice and much less oily. What I can say for both on a positive note, they both had good flavor. Flavor aside, these tamales seems a bit on the small side. Very flat and kind of dense. By no means the worst I've had but also not the best. I expected more from a place that specializes in just one kind of food. They did the trick, though, and staved off the craving. At least for a little while.

Yelp
I work graveyard and I love that they open at 8am! I can have tamales for my dinner before bed!

Kevin M.

Yelp
Tamales are pretty good but theyre raising their prices like crazy. You're telling me paying almost $50 for a dozen tamales is justified? I've been coming here for a while but with the prices I doubt I'll be back anytime soon.

Robert B.

Yelp
First time customer. I ordered pork and chicken tamales to try out. Pork is okay and little spicy but the chicken is a bit dry. The sauce is good and tasty. But the kicker for me was the price $12.75 for 3 tamales (tax included). One tamales doesn't even go around your mouth because they are small. Not worth the price for what it is. I asked if they would be running a special price for each dozen tamales for Xmas and the guy just looked at me like I'm crazy and with a stern NO for an answer. He needs to get his blood pressure checked. Seriously.

Yelp
My company told me to get some tamales from this place we had a patient that raved about it so I went I ordered I ordered 1dozen and then I ordered two of the special tamales. The total prior to taxes was $40ish . Total after taxes was $67 The person that rang me up said that they charge me tax per tamale normally when you order something you get charged per the total order... they seem like they would've been good tamales but my company was not paying $67 for 15 tamales. The gentleman with the veneers was nice when I first paid but when I told him about my jobs issues with the math he was very short fused, which is understandable. I will say 8 o'clock in the morning. The tamales are piping hot and there was no line.. maybe one day I'll be on this side of town and I'll buy one tamale and try it for myself.

Ming L.

Yelp
This is a solid tamale place. My favorite is the cheese tamale, full of flavor and moist. Unfortunately the pork and chicken tamales were dry to me, not quite as flavorful. I'll definitely be coming back as service is pretty quick too. I would suggest bringing cash versus a card.

Eddie R.

Yelp
They charge you hidden tips and don't give you a detailed receipt of what you were charged. Ordered the same exact thing three days apart for the same listed price using the same card and the amount was different. The clerk charges whatever he/she feels like adding on as a tip.

Ana R.

Yelp
BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE !!! Couldn't even finish my sentence without the lil guy interrupting and being rude !

Shonece L.

Yelp
They were not lying when someone said that they will "add their own tip" or over charge you. I bought two tamales and they tried to tell me my total was 12 and some change and when I questioned it and pulled out my calculator they told me it was a $5 cc charge fee. I knew that was something they made up bc no place charges that much for a cc fee so I told them no that's not right. The guy then says that they charge me for one more and he refunded me for the one they overcharged me for. Now imagine if I didn't say anything... almost $13 for tamales is crazy.. I won't be going back

Mario A.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with the tamales at this place, it's hard to find good tamales in town.

Yelp
Patty's tamales are the best tamales I've had in ages possibly ever! Each one is a very nice size and stuffed full of ingredients whether it is the chicken Verde, chicken Roja, pork, or cheese and green chile, they are absolutely delicious. You can tell they are made with love and care. I'm so happy that I turned my head to the right, and saw them far back in the parking lot across the street from Unlv on Maryland Parkway. We made an immediate right and will be back again very soon! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Mood - Tamales After a long day of hunting for gifts - Tamales were on the mind. With the holiday season being upon us it was in our best interest to call around to find out who was open. Upon entering was greeted with great customer service. I guess other people had the same idea on their mind re: tamales as the gentleman behind the counter let us know everything was out except for the Pollo Verde. So with that being said it was chosen and decided. These tamales were wonderful. Everything was cooked to perfection. Now I will admit he did warn us and say it was spicy. My son, loves spice and decided to accept the challenge. You can tell the food was cooked with great ingredients. And yes spicy it was. Interior is not designed for sit in. You walk up to the counter, place your order, and get your food to go. We were given a plate and utensils to be able to eat in the car for the ride home. Staff were wearing masks to ensure good ol Covid safety. Would most def recommend - pricing was fair for the quality of the food. Customer service was on point and very hospitable. I cant wait to go back at an earlier time or place and order to try their other varieties. Location is Sahara/Nellis - ample parking

Yelp
I was asked by a Mexicana friend who comes from East Palo Alto where to find the best tamales in Las Vegas. Homegirl is from EPA (East Palo Alto), so the tamales needed to be legit. ¡Sin duda es en casa de Patty! There's only tamales here and they are good sized. My favorite is the savory and sweet tamales filled with slow-cooked chicken in spicy green sauce. Just canned sodas and water available. It's only carry out at this location. I've never been to the one by UNLV, but I hear there's tables. If you're getting more than a dozen, you'd better call ahead.
google avatar

Mina R.

Yelp
Hmm. Ive been here 2 times already and ordered the same kind of tamales. Spicy chicken with green sauce. The first time around my tamales were really good. And moist. Which is why I chose to come back a second time. But this time my tamales were very dry. Dont get me wrong. They still tasted very good. Just very dry. Lol. Overall. Its a gamble between moist and dry tamales. But the taste seems to be consistent. If they would get it right all the time. Then I wouldn't mind giving this place a 5 star review!
google avatar

Cortney A.

Yelp
No Me Gusta FYI this cheese doesn't melt! The masa is decent but this overall tamale is a no go for me. Not so spicy cheese tamale with thick cheese chunks definitely did not hit the spot. $4.35 + $1.00 card fee Sometimes once is just enough!

Yelp
This was my first time trying the food in this shop. When you walk in its a pretty simple shop, nothing to fancy. The menu was simple and straight to the point. A half dozen tamales cost $13.50, I purchased that and two extra tamales on the side so we can try all of the flavors they had. After I ordered the food, it was quickly put together in bags. The tamales are all in large pots steaming and waiting for purchase. They smelled so good I was excited. We brought them home and opened them up and started eating. My girlfriend only ate one, I almost finished two and my son finished two. The flavors weren't bad, not the best. The reason why I gave this 3 stars is because there was so much masa compared to the meat actually inside that I had to cut it all up so I didn't eat all masa. The spicy ones were pretty spicy and that flavor was pretty good but like I said, just not enough meat and too much masa. After we were done eating I instantly felt sick and very nauseous. My girlfriend started feeling sick an hour or so later and I am still dying today with the worst stomach pains. Maybe they were sitting in the pots too long, maybe its an ingredient that they use but I don't think we will be coming back.

Yelp
I could not contact them. The voicemail was full and the bot suggest I leave a text and then forwarded my phone number. No response after over a week.

Mary W.

Yelp
Their Tamales are delish! We happened to notice them one day so we decided to try some. We have no regrets!
google avatar

Mrs Shamier H.

Yelp
I ordered 2-3 chicken tamales but I wanted corn tamales and she only has like 2 or 3 types I wasn't to happy about the taste of it at all they weren't good at all
google avatar

Shailyn S.

Yelp
First of all, the customer service is amazing here! The man was super sweet (and I regret not getting his name now haha) and remembered my mom who had come the day prior with my dad. And he remembered that, and even thanked her for coming back. Now the food: delicious! As soon as you walk in, you can smell the tamales and they smelled AMAZING. I got a dozen tamales: 4 of the spicy pork and 8 of the non spicy chicken. It was super good and I highly recommend coming here! I like how easy and straightforward it was to order, nothing too crazy or complex. If you're looking for some delicious tamales, you should definitely come here! I was so excited to eat the tamales that I unfortunately did not get pictures, but I'll remember to next time!

Yelp
I had just been to the salon next door and decided to stop in to buy some tamales. A woman who had been in the Salon with me was purchasing some tamales too and had stated that the last time she purchased some the tamales were oily or greasy. I figured she was possibly mistaken because I've never had oily tamales. She was right. These were almost slimy they were so oily. I got the red chicken and the cheese with peppers. The cheese with peppers wasn't oily but it had looked like they stuffed to mozzarella cheese sticks down in with the peppers and they never melted. (See pic) They were way over priced too. I paid $32 for a dozen tamales and 1 soda. I will not be returning here. I'd rather find a local person who makes them and sells them out of their trunk.
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
Every tamale I have had from here tastes amazing. I am going to keep coming back again and again. The spice level is amazing and the heat is amazing. These tamales taste sooooo good and there are no flaws with them what so ever. Don't let the interior scare you away, it may not look like much but this food is made with love and you can definitely taste it!
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
At first glance, I was hesitant to go in because the window outside said "catering restaurant". So I went on Google to see photos of the menu. I just decided to go for it. I went in and ordered 2 of EVERYTHING! Red Chicken (not Spicy) Green Chicken (spicy) Cheese with Peppers (spicy) Red Pork (spicy) and dessert tamales Pineapple and Strawberry (Strawberry was better). Cost me about 35 bucks for about 12 tamales. I'm glad I went there. I will have enough to last me all week.  I did not find them greasy as some people mentioned and  I was stuffed after eating just 2!! They have some weight and are messy!! (steam and wrappers).I can't give it a 5 cuz ... well, it's just tamales.

Marsella S.

Yelp
Love this womans tamales! I told her I was going on a road trip back home and she was totally accommodating to me and even kept all my tamales frozen for me so I had better transportation. If you want to leave her a tip bring cash, she rang up my credit card and didnt let me tip her via C.C I tried. So I ran and got cash and brought it back. Love the spicy tamales. They arent spicy but they taste just right!

Diego D.

Yelp
Last time I came to this location the tamales were dry but good thing I came back and this time they were very moist and tasty. They wrap the tamale twice one in paper and the second in Plastic. That seems to help the tamale from not drying specially if you need to reheat them in the microwave. I definitely recommend the chicken with red sauce tamale and the spicy rajas con queso. I just need to say if the owner is reading this seriously check your worker the mid aged guy with the bad customer service. He seems to lack good customer service skills and he always comes off rude and miserable.
google avatar

Shaun P.

Yelp
The gentleman working was very nice and answered all of my questions. I tried the red (spicy) chicken and my husband had the spicy pork. Both were good. I wish they had salsa to accompany the tamales. The gentleman told me they would be serving shrimp tamales soon so I'll be back to try them and get another red chicken tamale.
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
Was visiting family for Christmas and what is Christmas with out tamales. The food here is togo only kind of like a little Caesars but for tamales. The tamales here are good. We ordered the red pork, red chicken ,green chicken and cheese and with pepper, the red chicken is not spicy but all the others are real spicy. I liked all, I only eat tamales like one maybe twice a year and I enjoyed the tamales here. The prices of Tamales are going up there $2.25 each. I Think it's time to invested into a big pot and do them myself next year but if you just want to pick some up some tamales here pretty good here.

Jana A.

Yelp
Best tamales in town! The staff is awesome. It's totally worth the drive across town.
google avatar

Kenya G.

Yelp
Tamales from here were truely a treat, but don't expect to eat there. It is completely bare in the dining room, so there is only take out available I'm assuming and without a great atmosphere. However, it is very bright and the tamales are amazing. The guy came out as soon as I walked up to the counter, and there isn't a wait for the food either. I ordered one of each because there were only 4 options. They were humongous and delicious; so worth it!! They don't have knives, which was kind of inconvenient but a minor complaint lol
google avatar

Issac R.

Yelp
I am a fan of tamales, however these were just mediocre at best. The amount of meat used in each tamale is embarrassingly little to what a tamale should have. You're better off getting tamales at a MUCH cheaper rate like at the Bonita, Cardenas, or even the street vendor who sells outside in the parking lot. Really expensive, additionally they cashier charges additional charges that makes no sense. For half a dozen you're paying $20 and for a dozen $41 after tax. So when you see the sign that says it cost $17.33 don't pay attention to that as you will be charged at checkout $20. It don't make sense.

Karol P.

Yelp
Tamales are delicious I really love this place. I have been here twice already and the customer service I get here is exceptional good the person that helped me is very courteous. I really like coming here.
google avatar

Shannon A.

Yelp
Delicious! I loved the mild chicken tamales, my daughter and husband loved the spicey green chicken. The service was fast and friendly. I highly recommend!

El Come T.

Yelp
Tamales are good but the order wasn't right, why they bother to take the order but when I get home he give me everything wrong for me that is really disappointing.

nicole g.

Yelp
These tamales were so phenomenal. And I'm Mexican and these tamales are second best, first are my moms but oh my goodness are these a close first. The service was great we literally got out tamales 30 seconds after we ordered. I definitely will recommend to everyone and even take some down to my Mexican family
google avatar

Heather A.

Yelp
So, I was determined to find good quality tamales for Christmas Eve dinner. My maternal family is Mexican, so my mom is pretty picky about her tamales. Yelp didn't let me down. Service at Patty's is super quick. This place is solely about tamales. Good price at $2.25 per tamale, or a dozen for $27. At this time, they have red and green chicken tamales, red spicy pork, and cheese. I got red and green chicken. The tamales were huge! Good amount of meat to masa. The green ones were definitely spicy. The red chicken were perfect. Yelp noted that they do not take credit cards. So, I brought cash. However, that's not true. There is a $1 charge for credit cards. Also, don't expect to eat there. No seats. This is a pop in and take your tamales home type of place.
google avatar

Zara-Maria R.

Yelp
I don't know if maybe I got a bad batch or what, but definitely not the best tamales I've had. I've had friends parents make better tamales. I ordered their pork with red sauce, chicken with red sauce and sweet corn and pineapple tamales. They no longer had the sweet corn tamales. Also the prices advertised on their website is WRONG! They claimed to not have been able to fix it, but it really doesn't take much to change prices on a website. Ok, the tamales were HUGE. I'll give them that but they were just mediocre. They corn kind of brittled away while you ate it which makes me wonder how long they've been sitting in the pots the worker was pulling them out of. The pork with red sauce does have more heat then the chicken. I didn't try the pineapple tamale, not really my thing. My kids liked the chicken tamale and ate most of it. The facility is clean and the young gentleman working was very helpful. This place is too far out for me to travel to for mediocre tamales.

Alpha K.

Yelp
So I have been searching for the best tasting tamales in Vegas. My girl used to tell me like " babe you have to go out east to find some tasty delicious food" she pointed me to this place. And let me you. The tamales was real tasty and delicious. So usually when I find some tamales I'll have to throw my lil ingredients in it like salt and some seasons but Patty's Tamales don't need none of my extra ingredients. Now I'm hooked. They have some shrimp tamales to die for I swear. Shrimp is my favorite. The service was very fast.
