Yelp
You been wondering why this beautiful place earned just three stars. I am basing my review and rating on the overall experience including the return on my very hefty investment of nearly $160 for a one-hour experience . ($65 per person plus gratuity)
The rating translation: Five-star service and prime location earned the majority of the stars.
We were dressed appropriately, yet our arrival experience was a bit pretentious. I felt as though my every step was being politely scrutinized from entry in the hotel lobby (where we needed to "check in ") then again several times along the way. I suppose this keeps the "riffraff " out.
Once we reached the restaurant level, we again had to check in at the desk to confirm our reservation.
Then again at the hostess' station. We had a reservation, which we had confirmed again, yet I felt they were not really prepared for our arrival.
The hostess was assisting another guest but, for some reason, she left the dining room, and intern my daughter and I. She moved deliberately but very slowly, leaving us waiting nearly 6 minutes to be seated. This surprised me since the dining room restaurant was well-under capacity.
TIP TO MANAGEMENT: Why not have the initial "greeter" phone up to the restaurant to advise them that the guest was on route. This would provide exceptional experience and a wow factor, instead of a barrage of polite interrogations by two more people which was a bit off-putting.
Once seated, we really enjoyed our window side table and our server was absolutely spectacular.
THE TEA: I am a real tea drinker. And, I travel with my own stash. The waiter asked for my tea selection and I explained I like a very strong black tea so he recommended the house blend. The Langham blend tea I selected was less than stellar, a weak blend served already steeped without the loose tea. This was disappointing. I wanted to pull out my own teabags but at $65 per person I opted to explain my disappointment to the the server who immediately made another suggestion which I was more pleased with.
I lifted the lid off the Wedgewood teapot and was quite surprised:Be forewarned, Langham does not serve loose tea in your pot here, (which was somewhat disappointing considering that I expected a true English tea experience).
Truth be told, even the replacement was not up to the task. my own personal sachets would have served me better. And to be fair, My daughter loved her green tea.
THE FOOD: The petite finger sandwiches were Tiny works of art and delightful to look at. They were tasty. The highlight was the scones, battery, flaky, Crumbly triangles of pure delight and served with the Devonshire cream, strawberry jelly, and lemon curd. The mousse au chocolate was beautiful and satisfying. Each of the desserts were beautiful to look at.
Our seating was at 4 PM so our appetites we're not that large. Despite the spice plating, we asked to take the remaining pastries and scones to go.
Quite accommodating, Our waiter boxed up the provisions. Quite surprising, they handed us an oversized plain brown paper sack. No personality and a real letdown and missed opportunity for the Langham to have a walking, upscale advertisement.
The "devil is in the details" and therefore the overall experience versus the investment of our time and money earned fewer stars than I would like to have awarded.
In summary: two stars for tea, atmosphere earned four stars, five for service and pastry art, and four for taste.
