"There’s a homely, slightly bohemian vibe to Pea Porridge, with its wooden furnishings and interesting artwork hung on exposed brick walls. The restaurant sits inside two cottages that date back to 1820 and formerly served as a bakery, with the original cast iron bread oven still in situ. The ‘Grizzly’ charcoal oven gets plenty of use across dishes that blend warming spices with a herby freshness. 3 Course À La Carte, Weds-Sat Dinner – £56.50 (average price) 3 Courses, Thurs-Sat Lunch – £45" - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

"Tucked away on a residential square, this neighbourhood restaurant is warmly and personally run by a husband and wife team, and the unusual name is a nod to the old town green which once stood out front. The daily changing menu of North African, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes involves a range of ingredients cooked over charcoal. The sourdough flatbread fresh from the oven kicks things off perfectly and the unfussy dishes deliver bold, well-defined flavours which are skilfully executed. The esoteric wine list champions organic and natural wines." - Michelin Inspector

One michelin star place. The bread at the start was already impressive. The wagyu steak didn’t even need sauce as it was so flavourful on its own. The lobster was also amazing, but I didn’t enjoy the rabbit pasta as much.

Delightful! Everything we had was such a wonderful compliment of flavors. We also enjoyed their carefully curated wine list. Staff was so welcoming and attentive. For a special occasion, definitely book the Pea Porridge as a special treat!

Google
Absolutely amazing meal, staff and atmosphere were brilliant. Despite being on the higher price point, every bite feels worth the money. Only comment would be that a couple of the plates that were given to us between dishes has some visible dirt or something on them aswell as being chipped on the corner. Not exactly the standard expected by a Michelin meal. But again only a minor point as this was overshadowed by the excellent food

We had a really super meal here a few nights ago. The staff were friendly and helpful, but were also happy to let us chat and relax, which was great. The atmosphere was lovely - there was a buzz but it wasn’t too noisy. We had some fabulous Scottish scallops and white asparagus to start. We followed this by some delicious Mediterranean-inspired iberica pork and venison for our mains with some veg and chips. The basque cheesecake & Syrian cake desserts were also fab. Also loved the wine selection. Would thoroughly recommend and will be returning!

We had an absolutely incredible meal at Pea Porridge. It was worth every single penny! We will be returning to try some other delicacies from your unique menu. Service was exceptional, even to the very fine details.

Not my first time here but as I said to our host it’s the best meal I’ve had since I was last there. Food is excellent! I love the at atmosphere, this is a Michelin star restaurant without all the pompous nonsense that so often goes along with it. You feel more like a guest in someone’s lovely warm comforting home. Despite how wonderful the food is and how lovely the atmosphere of the restaurant is the thing that always stands out to the most is hits how lovely the staff/owners are. They could not be more kind, knowledgeable, down to earth lovely people. I’ve been lucky enough to eat in some fabulous eateries all around the world but this is still my favourite when all things are taken into account. Thanks again for another fantastic evening last night, we feel so incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful restaurant just 5 minutes from our front door.

Google
Pea Porridge is more than deserving of its Michelin star and is well on its way to its second. Homely, but sophisticated. Cosy but refined. The staff are kind, attentive and knowledgeable, proudly telling you about the produce and it's provenance. The food is to die for. I'd be delighted to go again and experience more of this expertly crafted restaurant. 10 / 10.

Google
A lovely, cosy restaurant. The staff are friendly and happy to answer questions about the menu and offer advice on wine pairings. The food is superb, top notch ingredients and the chef lets them speak for themselves. Rustic, but refined in style with bold punchy flavours, we loved every bite of our meal here. Highly recommended this place, we're looking forward to going back soon.

Yelp
Flavors are pretty good and the staff is friendly. The short rib was disappointing but we enjoyed everything else. The stuffed courgette blossom was probably our favorite. It isn't a spot we would go to often, but don't discourage others from trying.

Yelp
Quiet ambience, attentive service, creative food. The flatbread is amazing. Duck could have been slightly more tender, but great flavors. Generous portions. Diverse drinks and wine list. No wonder they have Suffolk's only Michelin star. Go here when in Bury.

Yelp
We admit to having high expectations about this place because of the purported Michelin star and it partially met those. Once seated we waited for 10 minutes before anyone said hello, brought menus or offered water. It is a small space with few tables and the server walked by us several times before we were acknowledged. After that however, things improved. We had quite a few starters: the sourdough with truffle, stuffed zucchini flower, and the scallops. All outstanding. Our table also tried the lobster pasta (a bit light on lobster and boring on flavor), the lamb tagline (which they loved) and the steak special (which was perfectly prepared but came with no side dishes included nor did the server mention we might want to order one). They were alerted in advance that we were celebrating a birthday and there was a nice card at the table when we arrived. Wine list had lots of choices. We had a cheesecake for dessert but it wasn't good. All in all this was not all we hoped for but had some shining moments. We won't be back but we wouldn't tell you not to try it.

Yelp
Recommended by a waitress at another diner, this quaint place was warm and charming. Walked over from Angel Hotel. Restaurant Owner was our server and we felt so at home here. Very welcoming for Americans and locals. Very outgoing and friendly. Food was a "10"; best Veal I have ever had. Friends ordered the Hare and loved it. We will always frequent this restaurant when coming abroad. I would highly recommend it to all! DP

Yelp
I first read about this place in a book called 'Where Chefs Eat' - about.. you guessed it: where Chefs eat in their free time. There were only two restaurants listed for Suffolk: one was The British Larder (now replaced by the even more excellent The Unruly Pig), and Pea Porridge. I persuaded the wife that we should book a room at The Angel Hotel purely so we could try it out and not worry about drink driving or the longish drive home from Bury. It was well worth the trip: I reckon this is the best restaurant in Suffolk (sorry Brendan, if you are reading this!). It's a French bistro with truly excellent standard of cooking, rarely seen out of London. There is a focus on fresh produce, simplicity and 'nose to tail' cooking, à la St.John. And it is cosy too, with a candlelit, intimate atmosphere: the restaurant was originally two cottages knocked into one, so the wife approved too. It's quite a long drive for us (just over an hour) but, even so, we have been back several times. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Cute family run little restaurant in a quiet street in Bury St. Edmunds. Good selection of food that changes regularly. This is a step above gastropub fare and makes for a nice night out. But although it's good it's not Michelin star standard. On the evening we visited they were packed and very busy as a result, this meant we were left waiting to place our order and to pay the bill. My fish soup starter was fantastic as was my main course and desert, although I would have liked to see the Tarte Tatin served fresh out of the oven, even if I had to wait longer. Instead it was served cold - which is always better than re-heating. My wife's fish dish was tasty, but a top chef would have removed the visible bones sticking out. Good, with a lot of promise - just needs to smooth off those rough edges. I will go back soon.
