I've heard that this is the biggest and this is the best farmer's market in San Antonio. I mean, if this is the case, it's a complete let down. This is my second visit and it wasn't any better than the first. The first time, I thought maybe I came too late and farmers packed up after selling out. No. On my more recent visit, I thought maybe because it's cold. I'm making excuses for the fact that this is not an actual farmer's market, rather a market for vendors. Which is totally cool, but misleading.
First, the parking. Apparently there is a garage where you can park for free for two hours. I didn't see this. We parked in the parking lot and it was $11.30 for the day. Apparently, the first 30 minutes are free. I'm not sure how that works. I scanned and had to pay. I don't know how you get 30 minutes free since it seems like unless parking attendants are marking vehicles, no one would know if you are within 30 minutes. If anyone figures this out, I suggest running through the market to see if it's worthwhile to pay for a day's parking. Trust me, it will not take 30 minutes.
You can find vendors selling breads, baked goods, dog treats, wine, jams, soaps, lotions, juices, kombucha, some meats and dairy products, lots of prepared food and food kits, and wooden products. There were maybe two farms with produce and micro greens, but very few options. I didn't find wheatgrass, which was really what I've been searching for.
The major highlight was finding OroBianco peddling gelato in 39° temperatures! YES! That was worth the cost of parking. They had a lychee and lime which I had not had at either location before. It was like a taste of summer!
I will add that I was happy with my purchases from SoCo Ginger Beer (an Austin business) and Over Juiced (San Antonio). The extra ginger beer is phenomenal. I bought three juices from Over Juiced, but have only tried The Kicker, which lives up to its name.
There are much bigger and better markets, unfortunately, you have to make a day trip to find them. I'd opt for the market at Republic Square in Austin, the Dallas Farmer's market, or the Houston Farmers market for really fantastic produce selections.
