Where to Drink Guinness in Denver This Holiday Season | Eater

"The Pearl Street Pub and Cellar is housed in one of Boulder’s oldest buildings. Built in the 1870s, its earliest tenants were a barbershop and baths, the Colorado Telephone Company, and then a series of restaurants: The Royal, The Grand, The California, Bunga’s Cellar, Tom Horn’s, Quinn’s, Flaps, and beginning in 1997, the Pearl Street Pub and Cellar. Situated right on Pearl Street’s pedestrian mall, the tiny patio is a great place to people watch, while inside, ephemera chronicling decades of regulars lines the brick walls. Shoot some pool or throw some darts, enjoy some pub food, or just get convivial with the locals over a pint of Guinness." - Rebecca Treon

The 21 Essential Restaurants in Boulder, Colorado

"On the tony Pearl Street thoroughfare, Pearl Street Pub & Cellar is a popular game-day destination with a treasure trove of Denver Broncos paraphernalia. The bar is known for its fried mac and cheese bites and some of the best burgers and wings in town, served into the wee hours. Happy hour runs late and the bar offers great drink specials, plus pool tables, foosball, darts, and occasional live music. Celebrating a birthday? Google
Great place, great beer. Multiple beers on tap. We also tried the grilled cheese sandwich and the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich (both very good). The guy behind the bar is awesome. Prices are very fair. Came here before, and would come here again!

Google
Great place to hang out really nice service upstairs downstairs can’t beat it

Google
This place is a total dive and a boulder institution all at the same time. Look, you don't come here for a craft cocktail or for a michelin star, but its late night, you want a beer and a greasy delicious burger this is the place. Additionally this place is littered with CU boulder tradition and has some of the same friendly and fair staff that has been working there for over 20 years. Check this place out as what I would consider the best boulder bar.

Google
Ate a mushroom burger and fries and it was very good. Avery beer was great as was the service. We were very happy with our visit.

Google
A classic local spot for good bar food and quick service. The drinks here are reasonably priced and the bar tenders are very helpful. I really enjoyed the corn dog bites. My friends and I love coming to the pub to eat drink and hang out.

Google
recently moved to Colorado from Texas. this bar reminds me of home, the staff is friendly, and they have best burgers I've had in a while. I told all my friends about this place.

Google

Yelp
Very cool atmosphere. The crowd tends to have a college vibe, but it's not everyone, you'll still see a mix crowd here. Happy hour prices are great...I believe it's $4 beer and $4 wells. The place is bigger than it looks, and has a base type floor below with pool tables, pac man, and foosball, darts..prob other stuff I don't remember. I dig it, worth checking out if in the area.

Yelp
Was in Boulder and had some extra time one afternoon while walking around to stop here for lunch. Cool no-frills pub. Order your drink in front and your food in the back if you're getting food. Seat yourself. Good prices, good burger.

Chris B.

Yelp
Best Old Fashioneds in town! You may think a college bar staffed by "bartenders" who only know how to pour beers and shots who have learned to despise their college clientele over the years, and who's owner has made his money a hundred times over wouldn't bother to keep a single bottle of Angostura bitters stocked behind the bar, but you would be totally wrong! They definitely have bitters and definitely know how to make the simplest, most well known cocktail for guests. They understand that it would be ridiculous to have all that whiskey and scotch on the wall and not know what to do with it besides pour shots and add soda or cola. Duh! Give them more credit than that. So please give their old fashioned a try! They definitely have that one very common inexpensive ingredient called Angostura Bitters behind the bar to make one and they definitely know that it is just 2oz of whiskey, 1/2oz of simple syrup, and a couple dashes of bitters. Oh, and please try their Manhattan or Rob Roy as well! What useless excuse for a "bar" would bother to carry scotch and whiskey and not keep a single bottle of $13 vermouth handy? That would be pathetic! And this bar definitely isn't pathetic.

Yelp
Normally my very favorite grilled cheeses. They burnt mine

Beth H.

Yelp
We stopped in on a whim, looking for a decent burger and we were not disappointed. This is how I think a neighborhood bar should look, sort of dark, narrow with one bartender running the show - who was personable, friendly and highly efficient. The kitchen is in the back of the bar and you walk over and order or the bartender takes the order and runs the order back. We had multiple orders including wings, burgers and fish and chips. All were freshly cooked and piping hot. We were all very satisfied with our meals - I had the fish and chips and the fish was perfectly cooked and crispy - the potatoes were well seasoned and the Cole slaw was light. A great meal! Finally, the bathrooms were clean, the crowd was fun (and clearly local) and we didn't feel rushed- we could have easily enjoyed drinks there for a couple of hours.

Yelp
The great Daniel Larson is here tonight. Lots of FBI agents and police cars outside. Don't know what that's all about.
google avatar

Madi H.

Yelp
I love you and your late night mac and cheese bites forever Miss the pre-covid days where all of my friends and I would come on our 21st to kiss the buffalo (I assume that's no longer happening) but I still love going for a beer and some bar food

Tracy T.

Yelp
I'm shocked with tonight's events. I was told to leave having done nothing wrong. This WAS my favorite bar in Boulder but I for sure won't be back. Do NOT come here if you have any physical issues and just want to chill and have a beverage. Very confused.
google avatar

Richard D.

Yelp
This is far the best place in Boulder for a hamburger and wings. I would not post this, if I was not super satisfied. Wowww what can I say.The food is so delicious every bite is sweet flavors of a well made burger.

Yelp
One, perhaps the only one, authentic bar on The Pearl Street Mall. Divey yes, Dicey no. Bartender was very efficient: no chit-chat, no gratuitous flirtation, no BS. Kitchen is very much the same. Don't bother saying, "I've heard about your legendary BLT, and hope it's all true!!" Just, say, "BLT," and hand over $8.00. They'll bring it to the bar, or in my case, out front. Great BLT (grilled bread, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, plenty of bacon) and hot, perfectly salted fries.

Nathan B.

Yelp
Came here on a very very busy Thursday night (warning: a younger crowd) and the 5 star rating is still accurate. I don't know if there is a Thursday deal but i was getting mixed drinks for $5 downstairs which is a solid deal. Even though it was busy they got me my drink in a matter of seconds. After some drinks I got some food. I wasn't very hungry so i got a half basket of fries (costs $3) and it was still a solid amount and they tasted really good. It may have taken around 15 minutes to get my food with the one chef they had making food, however he was working extremely fast and was entertaining to watch making all the food for the bar goers that were before me.

Pa'ahana K.

Yelp
My boyfriend took me to Boulder for the first time today. We stopped by the pub for fish and chips and we each got one drink. We couldn't finish our drinks because a security guard kicked my boyfriend out for "doing drugs". That was a false accusation that I know wasn't real because we were already so tired. We had a long day and just wanted a drink and fish and chips. Was really disappointed and that security guard was probably on drugs himself. Lol this Pub sucked anyway

Yelp
There aren't too many proper pubs in the Pearl Street Mall area. Most establishments are restaurants that happen to have a bar, but this place is a pub that happens to serve food. Happy hour lasts from 4 all the way until 7 PM, which is pleasantly later than most places in the area. That along with their especially well-priced and generously proportioned grilled cheese with seasoned fries is enough to make this bar a favorite. They also make a nice burger and have a reasonable, if not extensive, beer selection. The atmosphere is cozy and chill for the happy hour crowd, which is nearly always when I am there. One of my favorite stops for a post work brew.
google avatar

Sasha B.

Yelp
Reopened earlier this week with lots of improvements. Even the Buffalo has seen a vacuum and spruce up. Food menu has been revamped and is very clear to read and interpret. Great deals on food during the work week. Some of the options are $8 burger with fries (vegetarian option too), $8 pulled pork, slaw and fries & $8 steak sub w/fries). Definitely drop in for a brew, a bite, pool, and/or some darts!

Yelp
Had a bizarre experience last night. My fiancé and I, who visit this bar on occasion, stopped by last night with a couple friends. The bouncer checked my ID first and let me in. Next my fiancé handed over his ID and the bouncer just stared at him and said he couldn't let him in because he claimed he was "on something". We all thought he was just messing with him, as he was sober and had done nothing wrong. I'm unsure if the bouncer was "on something" himself, or prejudice or what. Bottom line, if you want to be treated with dignity and respect, do not go here. This bar has lost my business for good and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
This place gets 3 stars because I took my complaint to the very nice door guy, who directed me to the manager (AJ) who offered us a free round, (which we did not end up utilizing.) They are great. Keep them. This review is specifically for the bartender with the spikey red/light brown hair (upstairs, 1030pm 10/6, plaid shirt) who gave us the meanest service I have ever experienced. We are on vacation and asked "what do you have on draft?" To which he responded "beer" and walked away. A moment later he returned and threw a menu in front of us, walked away again. He did not answer any of her questions, just turned his back and walked off to go to the P.O.S. any time she tried to ask for basic service. Came back again with my drink that I had ordered while my friend was in the restroom. She was able to get her draft beer in a timely fashion, it just came flavored with discomfort. Now, I am a bartender and I understand that's busy bar on a Friday requires staff to move a little quicker. There were 7 open seats at the bar and two bartenders. Every other staff member was completely normal. I am not sure why this guy was so different but we found a different (also lovely) bartender to help us close our tab and left without finishing our drinks. I only leave critical reviews if I think something happened that was really lame. This is one of those times. Sorry Pearl St. Seems like you got a bad egg.
google avatar

Christian B.

Yelp
came here for lunch with a bunch of co workers. The service was not too bad. We ordered in the back by the kitchen and then walked up front to find a table, which was easy since they were not busy. The bartender was friendly and on top of the basic stuff like making sure we were happy and filling up our water glasses. The food was decent for pub style burgers and sandwiches, I did notice they many of my co workers didn't finish their meals and said the food was over cooked and salty. The whole place smelled like stale food/beer and was really dark inside but overall not a bad experience.

Kim H.

Yelp
I'm giving them a 2 only because they're food was good. You can't call in orders, staff is not friendly at all!!! Will get a burger and beer somewhere else before i go back there.
google avatar

Yelp
This place really needs to up their service game. I've been here twice in the last couple months and have left with a sour taste in my mouth both times. Not only do the bartenders truly seem to hate their jobs but the second time I was in I sat outside and their chair stabbed through the back of my jeans when I was sitting. So not only did I have poor service but they murdered my favorite pair of pants with no apology whatsoever. Not impressed.

Yelp
Really fun little dive bar with an awesome basement area that has arcade games, darts, and pool tables. We went during the day, but if you go in the evening I bet it's super popular

Eden S.

Yelp
My friend was discriminated by the bouncers at this pub. We arrived in the freezing cold on a Friday night to get a drink and stay warm but my friend ( a person of color) was denied at the door for being "too too drunk" when she was simply navigating a foot of snow in heeled boots. I am white passing and my other friend was white and the only person denied entry was my friend who was a POC and we were left in the freezing cold to call an Uber home. Very disappointed with fucking discrimination shown by these bouncers.

Preethi K.

Yelp
I was discriminated against at this bar. I am a women of color and I was rejected simply because I am not white. My white (and white passing) friends were allowed in while I was not. They assumed that me shuffling on the icy streets was an indicator of my level intoxication but I was simply trying to assist my friends to make it there safely, especially considering one of my friends just had surgery.

Kate B.

Yelp
I am 100% sober and the bouncer refused to let me in with my real ID on Friday 7/29 for absolutely no reason.
google avatar

Michaela O.

Yelp
I was only in town for two days and I came here twice. Rico was so nice and helpful in his recommendations. The food was all great and made in good time. Zero complaints. Nice, chill bar that's affordable. Definitely worth a stop.

Brianne S.

Yelp
Boulder's best bar staff! Completely unpretentious, great prices, even better company. It puts the dive in dive bar in the best way possible. Absolute can't miss in Boulder!

Logan W.

Yelp
I sure do love this place! Best neighborhood, locals bar around. The burgers are top notch too!

Andrew O.

Yelp
I recommend that people boycott this filthy, unhygienic and very hostile establishment. The bathrooms look like they are never cleaned, and I doubt the cleanliness and safety of the food. The bartenders are rude and hostile. I was kicked out last Saturday night because they didn't like a BDS t-shirt that I was wearing saying that it was "divisive." Save your money and do not step foot in this very dirt and unclean dive bar if you care about your health. Go anywhere else.

Bailey N.

Yelp
I'm not from Boulder but my buddy is and we have never seen anything like this. I had high hopes and was extremely disappointed. The bouncer was hitting on girls and was super inappropriate and even when they tried to go inside. It made us uncomfortable and he wasn't even talking to us. The drinks were good, no complaints about that. But having someone try to hit on young girls at their "job" as a bouncer just ruined the whole experience for us. It gets two stars instead of one for the drinks.

Tom L.

Yelp
Searched Yelp for "Irish pub" and this one came to the top. We went there for a nightcap and hoping for a "Baby Guinness", it being an Irish Pub and all. I ask the bartender for a "Baby Guinness" and he says "we don't have Guinness." Strike one... What kind of Irish Pub doesn't serve Guinness?? Strike two... He doesn't know what a Baby Guinness is. I tell him the ingredients and even walk him through how to pour the Bailey's on top. Strike three... He dumps the Bailey's in and we end up with a light brown mess. Oh well.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome grub at this pub. Best buffalo chicken sandwich in Boulder. On Pearl street. Just a pub. Look for it. Simple bar food if in the mood.

Yelp
Went in for burger special on tues with about 10 coworkers. I was called a "fucking idiot" because the man grilling the burgers didn't like where I was standing and talking to my friend. Told me that I was "in his line of sight" and with me there "he just can't". He rudely told me to "clear out". I said no. He yelled "fuck you!" Turned around and punched the computer and stomped around the grill. He ran to the front and got the manager who proceeded to KICK ME AND MY ENTIRE PARTY OUT OF THE RESTAURANT. I tried to explain to him that it was his employee who was in the wrong. He responded, "right or wrong I need you to leave." Never going back. This grill worker is going to end up punching someone and maybe then the manager will learn whose side he should be on. Edit: Shocked to see other reviews citing this kind of behavior.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
Yes it's dark and divey, but the food was awesome and prices are good, so I don't regret stopping here for a late dinner during a night out in Boulder. I came here with group of six friends... we were already tipsy but had not had dinner yet so we were looking for some delicious unhealthy food. The set up is a little strange... you order your food at a window in the back room of the bar, and then have to wait for it or go back to get it. Also, we sat outside but the outdoor seating area leaves much to be desired... it's just a few old uncomfortable metal tables and chairs. Anyway, we were eventually situated with our food and couple pitchers of beer. My boyfriend and I split the fried mac and cheese nuggets and the reuben with fries. Both were so delicious... for a dive bar that looks like nothing special, I have to say the food is great and portions are big for the cost. I see some complaints of rude employees, but we did not experience anything like that. While I definitely would not come here for the atmosphere, the food and prices are on point.
google avatar

E B.

Yelp
Honestly, the food here is so good, the service can be as abysmal as they want (although our personal experiences were neutral). We had the patty melt and the pub philly and both were excellent and fresh.

Yelp
Lively pub, free of charge with a live band that play's hip hop classics, R &B soul and request. Composed of a bass & electric guitarist, with the keyboards and drummer (Matt) riding the tempo (Sean)keyboard & couple of ppl on the mic rapping, harmonizing, singing and ad libbing. All day every day beer specials with the foosball, pool tables & etc... on the basement level. With a late night menu.

Yelp
Pearl Street Pub and Cellar is located in the Pearl Street Mall at the cross street of Pearl and 11th. It is right next door to Old Chicago's, one spot down from the southwest corner. My co-workers described this place as having the best cheeseburger in all of Colorado. Quite an impressive claim, which I had to validate for myself. First, a little bit about the place. Pearl Street Pub is split into in two levels, with a small sized bar on the top level, and another bar downstairs. The bar downstairs has limited seating, but does offer patrons a multitude of games including Foosball, darts, and pool. A fine selection of bar games! Supposedly, this place serves a full food menu later than any other bar in Boulder, keeping the grill fired up and serving food until 1:30 AM. I believe there is live music every Wednesday night, although apparently you can find a lively crowd here every night of the week. You can tell this place has a loyal base of regulars, but I did not get the feeling that a new comer would be unwelcome. Anyways, back to the food. Not only is this place supposed to have the best cheeseburger in all of CO, but on Tuesday, they offer their excellent Cheeseburger with pub fries for only $4.50. Let me repeat, a 1/2 pound angus burger with french fries for four bucks and fifty cents! To top it off, they offer pints of all beers on tap for $2.50 all day long! I ordered the cheeseburger and a cold pint and the total came to a whopping $6.50. I was truly impressed. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare, which I did not even have to specify. I say perfect because it was pink through-out with out being too rare and bloody. The burger was seasoned nicely, and the condiments were fresh and plentiful. Even the bun was tasty and nicely toasted. The fries came with both salt and pepper, my personal favorite way to eat them. It was a struggle, but I managed to finish the burger. In conclusion, if you find yourself on Pearl Street on a Tuesday, check this place out, you will not be disappointed. Whether or not it is the best cheeseburger in CO I can not say, but I am willing to bet it is the best, or at least one of the best, cheeseburgers you can find for under $5. It sure as hell beats any fast food restaurant or burgers that cost twice as much. I held off on giving it five stars only because I have no idea what anything else on the menu is like, and whether or not the bar is a cool place at night. Regardless, I see many more Tuesday 1/2 pound angus burgers in my future at this place!

Yelp
This is a real find inside TERRIFIC!! Travis at the bar is welcoming and helpful with beers and all else!! Murphy is a great cook!! We had Pulled Pork and Slaw and Patty Melt on rye!! Both really delicious!! We ate in back room and had football on one screen and US Open with Nadal on the other!! Perfect Saturday afternoon on Pearl St. Travis made Ice Coffees for us, too. Probably coming back tomorrow!!

Yelp
Were Irish so we thought let's check out this Pub. Had good beer. Fish & Chips lunch special wasn't too good. Coleslaw good, chips average very salty & fish way too fishy and the breading was very strange, almost like it was something frozen from Costco. Patio was nice to people watch. Big disappointment.

Kristin Marie S.

Yelp
This bar is bad ass!! I wish we had one like it in San Francisco. Anything that has Foosball, three pool tables, a dart room and some random beer I have never heard of in a can that tastes decent gets 5 stars in my book. Hey I'm easy! Ok maybe 4.5 stars because it doesn't have anything super unique like bocce or skeeball. It'd be pretty awesome if they could expand and put a real shuffleboard court down there. You hear that! Someone who has been to your bar twice and doesn't even live in the town is telling you what you should do to make her happy. That's what kind of yelper I am, this is all about me, who cares about everyone else. Besides the games the layout is pretty sweet and the basement is dope. Out of the ten bars in Boulder, ok ok I'm sure there are more, this was my favorite. Granted we only went to 5 of the 10 but its top notch. It has everything you could want not to mention it serves food! I know I wasn't making sense when I ordered but just like the Ozzy commercial he figured it out and gave me half fries and half mushrooms. Its a great last supper when you know you are being fed a tofurkey the following day. Sorry vegans, I support your cause just not my style. The day after the tofurkey we watched about 3 hours of burgers across America and I was salivating. Sooo good, especially the one in Minnesota where they put cheese in the middle and it oozes out when you bite into it. Off topic, although if the Pub did serve that burger it might be worthy of 6 stars. So there you have it, if I ever head back into town this will be my first stop. This and then nitro.

Yelp
We were roaming Pearl Street on a surprisingly nice Saturday afternoon in February, in need of a starter beverage and late lunch. The bar itself was full but all of the tables were empty. We grabbed a 2-top near the back edge of the bar and wandered up to order a couple of drinks. The bartender was super friendly and happy to chat about this and that between serving other patrons. The kitchen is separate from the bar (is this a Colorado thing for managing liquor laws? I'm not sure, but every state/city has their own weird rules, so who knows...), you duck in to the back area and order from the staff at the kitchen. The girls working today was also super friendly and helpful with the menu. She delivered our burger and fries out to the table for us when they were done. Food was fantastic (and when you can say that about *just* a bacon bleu burger with fries, that's a really good sign). Our drinks were simple enough and everything was priced about average. It is definitely a locals place, and they had quite the diverse crowd in there. Everyone was enjoying themselves, talking across the bar and half watching the basketball games on the TVs. We left full and happy, definitely our kind of casual place.

Nicole W.

Yelp
Who knows if the food is any good because the service is so poor you never really get a chance to ask for anything. Hey chef, learn how to smile, maybe serve yourself up some manners when you're done glaring at customers for asking for water. I guess the pitcher on the counter is not for patrons. Maybe you have to order a certain amount of food and beer first? The vacant stares of the staff complement the dreary depressed environment - I can only imagine what it's like when things get busy. One star for the guy who was kind enough to get me some water.
google avatar

Christa L.

Yelp
So if you were looking for Mike Rowe's brother, I think I may have found him. He's a bartender at the Pearl St. Pub & Cellar. Not really, but he did sound like Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs.) So anyone who hangs a huge buffalo head has got to be off to a great start. Nice atmosphere, not too busy during the day & on a monday. We didn't eat, but they advertised some decent lunch specials. The beer selection was the usual, which Avery Brewery has got the market covered in Boulder. The patrons at the bar were friendly. Our bartender, we'll call him Mike, helped us navigate our quest to find more delicious brews in Boulder. He also taught us some of the bike laws in CO. Which was very good to know, because bad things could've happened and I'm a little far from home to explain it. If I lived in this town Pearl St. Pub would be a most-def stop on my list at least once a week.

Yelp
My kind of bar! After an exhausting hike up Royal Arch trail, we chugged at least 2 gallons of water each before diving in to Colorado beer. The bartender was friendly, it was Happy Hour, and we were served attentively and given great recommendations. A local gem in a tourist area.
google avatar

Keith P.

Yelp
This "pub" refused to make a hot toddy for my wife when she arrived we 3 other women. Not a complicated drink. Honey hot water alcohol of choice. recommending you get your drink on else where. Don't order from ginger with short hair.

Derek C.

Yelp
This has to be one of the most unwelcoming and unfriendly places here in Boulder. A friend and I were turned away because my friend had a service dog. The staff claimed broken glass could be on the floor and he'd only be let in if he had dog booties. Usually, he has his booties for the hot concrete. This business turned away a disabled American and his service dog. Don't waste your money at this establishment, as they should not be rewarded for turning away a customer who has a legal right to take their service dog to any public establishments. Shame on you for your poor service and ineptitude.

Gracie G.

Yelp
Usually pretty happy with the service but the female bartender upstairs tonight was on a power trip. She Called last call, and i nwalked up maybe 30 seconds later and waited for her to take my order.... no service, she only paid attention to 4 guys at the other corner of the bar, then when I make eye contact tells me it's too late. Unprofessional. I get having regulars but serving them shots then refusing to serve me 5 seconds after is bs.

Yelp
I went here a few years ago and tried their Reuben sandwich. It was a late night - I had far too many drinks. My blood sugar was about to hit an all-time low. Enter: Reuben sandwich. This Reuben was not just good, it was an almost literal lifesaver. I returned last night with some friends. I was a little apprehensive to try their Reuben - why ruin such a good memory of the perfect Reuben? Certainly that level of quality is not attainable twice. But alas; this Reuben was just as good. The fries were also fine, but holy shit, that Reuben sandwich gets me all tingly down there just thinking about it. I hear their burgers are also awesome but get the fucking Reuben.

Yelp
If you are looking for a place to have a beer in Boulder with fantastic bartenders and great food, look no further. The Pearl St. Pub is an absolute institution on the historic walking district of Pearl. The burgers are second to none. You might get sass from the staff if you're an asshole but be polite and respectful, they will treat you in the same regard. There is no bar in Boulder better than The Pub. Go there, Have a time. Thank me later.
