11 New Things To Do & Eat In NYC This Week - New York - The Infatuation

"Pecking House’s chili fried chicken is so delicious that it has its own waitlist (just ask Staff Writer Nikko Duren - they were on it for two months before trying the mouth-numbing, Taiwanese hot chicken marvel). From now until April 9th, Pecking House is running a raffle for two waitlist fast-passes to collect funds for Heart Of Dinner - a non-profit providing free meals and human connectivity to Asian elders in NYC. Raffle tickets each cost $5 (you can enter as many as you want) and all transactions are happening via Venmo. Check out Pecking House’s Instagram post for more details." - Hannah Albertine

A New Kind of Hot Chicken, from Pecking House | The New Yorker

"The takeout-and-delivery operation, from the pedigreed Taiwanese-American chef Eric Huang, offers a meat-and-three set, with Szechuan-peppercorn-seasoned fried chicken, Cajun-inspired fried rice, and greenmarket-driven sides." - Hannah Goldfield

Google
Very bad experience. We order chow mein and they gave us some chopped vegetables. They said we should order low mein. Just search the bowser chow mein vs low men and you can clearly see the difference. Chicken is also not up to the quality. It was a bad choice going there.

Google
I really dont know how they have such a low rating but their food is always top teir. Food is not greasy like others and always fresh. It's American Chinese couldn't ask for a better spot on this side of town. I usually order the boneless spare ribs (well done) with pork fried rice, never does it lack in quality.

Google
god i just love chinese food… anyways this tastes like a classic chinese place! features a variety of options and the food was quickly made, not to mention these prices are great. was served homey food that hit the spot. service was okay but that’s how you know the food is good haha. food egg drop soup (8/10): tastes like your classic egg drop soup! perfect consistency but a bit too salty for my liking. beef chow fun (9.5/10): easily the best i’ve had, and i’ve had this dish at a lot of places. beef was tender and i loved the chow fun. it also had more veggies than a typical chow fun but that’s a plus to me. i didn’t like how much onions there were, but the rest of the dish was so good that i can’t really complain. might update this post if i ever return to try other dishes!!! 😋😋😋

Google
I ordered chicken wings with pork fried rice from these people and I got half box of rice and 3 wings. When I called the women, she told me “ I packaged your food and there was 4 wings, this has never happened to other customer.” This women had to audacity to say that, like my money did not buy the food and I called her for no reason. I’ve ordered from the Chinese before . I know what I’m suppose to get and what I paid for. I certainly didn’t pay for half box of food and missing wings from my order .

Google
The customer service is horrible. I specifically told the person I wanted no onions in my order which they agreed more than once and proceeded to make my order WITH ONIONS. Not to mention everything is OVERPRICED for mediocre food. Just find somewhere else at this point.

Google
I enjoy this Chinese Takeout bit more than others around the area. All Chinese Takeout’s are fairly similar with food preparation however Peking’s fried rice has added fresh onions to give it the extra crunch and sweetness. I also think they’re Sesame Chicken is a notch above others. Conveniently located in a strip mall so parking is never an issue.

Google
It's alright for chinese food. Delivery driver was greedy with the tip. Was taking his time dollar by dollar giving change. Was holding on to every dollar. Felt really uncomfortable.

Cara

Google
I ordered the shrimp fried rice. They gave me yellow rice and like 5 tiny shrimp in my LARGE bowl. 5 shrimps! Crazy!

Yelp
Very good Chinese cuisine, good value and delicious. My wife loves their general Tao chicken. We are the frequent customers and recommend this restaurant.

Michael S.

Yelp
i ordered bonless ribs with pork fried rice and a 2-liter bottle of coke. unfortunately the 2-liter bottle of coke at a cost of $5.65 was not delivered with my order i was given a can of coke. when i called the restaurant and explained what happened the person on the phone said " oh! "and left the phone off the hook. michael

Yelp
Hair in food. Hair was mixed in with the white rice. Women with long hair should cover it better. A baseball hat is not good enough. Also, it was mostly rice, little veggies, and shrimp. Lunch special $11.64 with tax and credit card fee. Hard noodle chips (don't know what they are called) were stale.
google avatar

Jesse Y.

Yelp
Above average local Chinese take out. Food is always hot and conveniently located with a parking lot. In all, Peking gets the job done. I've been ordering takeout from here for years and never had an issue.

Julian F.

Yelp
This place is the worst. I ordered a Mongolian Beef combination plate and it was stuffed with an obscene amount of some gross inedible fried noodle type of filler. (see photo) The rice was hard as a rock and had no bean sprouts, onions or scallions and barely any pieces of pork. Never again will I go to this Chinese restaurant. Just lazy and disgusting food. I would give zero stars if I could.
google avatar

Kenny Y.

Yelp
In order a lunch for $11.30. The lunch box size is small already , also it barely have any beef and broccoli. They gave so much rice for 11.30$ man.. u can get better one somewhere near this place. Smallest lunch for this price.

Yelp
I was hoping to have some good Chinese food for dinner on Sunday. I never tried this one but I passed it so many times. First off the man taking my order wasn't very friendly at all. I ordered a lot of things and when I mentioned the fried dumplings I requested 3 times an extra soy sauce. When I got home there was one. The chicken chowen had no real flavor to speak of. I didn't even finish the meal.. Went out to get a Chicken Parmesan Hero at the Italian place instead. I will never go to this place again. Live and learn.

John G.

Yelp
The food for a Chinese take out place is decent, but their care falters sometimes. I was once eating my chow fun when a metal wire was found in my food. Their customer service is one of the worst. The call person will make you repeat everything 5 times, and when you ask for specifications they simply say ok but never do it. At this point I don't think I can order from them again, Amy's Chinese restaurant however has never failed me. I hope this place gets their act together.

Yelp
Peking Restaurant has some of the best fried rice. It reminds me of Spanish yellow rice which I absolutely love! My colleagues and I would order from this spot frequently whenever we craved some yummy Chinese takeout. Delivery is pretty quick and they're efficient with the orders. We normally order Jumbo Shrimp and Broccoli in either White Sauce or Garlic Sauce, Plain Fried Rice, Pork Fried Rice, Fried Wontons in Garlic Sauce, Scallion Pancakes, Chicken Wings, Chicken and Broccoli in Garlic Sauce, Beef with String Beans in Garlic Sauce, Beef and Broccoli in Garlic Sauce, Egg Rolls, Shrimp Roll, and Fried Dumplings. The food is so good here. I wish I had an order of their beef & broccoli right now. Don't get me started on their fried wontons in garlic sauce -- this is definitely a must have. The wontons are huge and they come as an order of eight. The garlic sauce is of thick variety.

Christopher S.

Yelp
This is my normal chinese spot. I dont order all the time but they are pretty good i dont know why the average is so bad. Its a little out of the way but i think worth it.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
I love Chinese food.. But I'm never ordering from this place again. I ordered a vegetable chow fun but it tastes very bland. The rice noodles are overcooked and overchopped! I took one bite and stopped eating right away. so sad.

J. J.

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars I would. I walked in to pick up my order to see the cook sitting down coughing up phlegm into a tissue in his hands and then blowing his nose repeatedly. After wiping his nose with the tissue he tossed it the trash and I thought he would go to the back bathroom to wash his hands NOPE he proceeded to go back to cooking!!! He picked up an empty food container and started packing the food. He didn't wash his hands or even use hand sanitizer!!! I was shocked I decided to leave my order right and get something else to eat. I was grossed out. It's 2024 there's no reason not to use proper protocol when handling food.

Yelp
OK, let me put it out there. I like greasy Chinese fast food. I might have grown up in Chinatown among some of the best restaurants in the world, but I still get a hankering for fictional General Tso's Chicken, some Egg Foo Yung and maybe even an occasional Eggroll. Not so much Chop Suey though. Places like Peking cater to local tastes with cheap prices, fried wings, sweet sauces, quick service and a fortune cookie. Did you know broccoli originated with the Romans and now China is the biggest producer of this vegetable? I can imagine Marco Polo bringing some broccoli to China to meet with General Tso over some wonton soup and getting some takeout Lo Mein to bring back to Italy to make spaghetti. When we don't want to cook and decide on dinner at the very last minute, the menu from Peking gets whipped out. Who am I kidding? I can call on speed dial and order from memory. Fried Pork Dumplings? Chicken Corn Egg Drop Soup? Cold Sesame Noodles? Beef & Broccoli? Sesame Chicken? Roast Pork Egg Foo Young? Singapore Chow Mai Fun? That will be $58.35. Pick-up or delivery? And would you like the free soda or dim sum or fried rice with your order? (I'm favorable to the giant shui mai-like steamed dim sum dumpling). In these pandemic times, they have installed clear partitions over the counter and the rear door is closed off from the rear parking lot. You need to order online or over the phone and given an order number. So in about 20-30 minutes you can enter from the front to pick up your order from the lockout box they have installed like at the post office or the late night gas station. And my fortune cookie says, "There are a lot of bumps on the road to easy street." Very apropos in these trying times. Stick that in your eggroll.

Yelp
Hubs & I came in here to pick up a quick lunch while in the area. My order of "Jumbo shrimp with string beans" lunch special ($6.95) came with only four pieces of medium sized shrimp, but at least 1/3 of my takeaway bowl was filled with string beans. It was served hot, but the rice was very much undercooked (I was continually picking out grains from my back teeth). I tried Hubs' egg roll, which was on par for take-out (your average cabbage filled roll) and also piping hot. His lunch special order (sesame chicken with broccoli over fried rice) was a little bit more padded out in the protein section than mine was. A decent area of the top was covered with the chicken, and the meat itself was not coated in too much fried batter. The fried rice was normal for Chinese take out. Hot/sour soup & egg drop soups were average for take out, and came in a paper coffee cup for easier transport. The Thai Chili wings were OK, not much meat on the wings (can't say that's necessarily the establishment's fault), but the drumlettes were passable, and overall they were cooked through and fully coated. The food filled our bellies because we were hungry, but not something I'd be gunning to come back for.

Yelp
No frills Chinese American place. Called in my order and it was ready in 15 minutes. Everything is pretty decent.
google avatar

Missy C.

Yelp
Excellent Chinese Take Out food, taste, price and quality. Service is fast and straight forward. Fully staffed spot to cook everything you desire. Food tastes pretty good! It caters to Americans that want Chinese Take Out food. I'm pretty sure they are open everyday including holidays. That's a plus!
google avatar

Gregory C.

Yelp
Standard Americanized Chinese food. No culinary epiphanies here and no complaints. Plenty of free parking in front and in the back with their shared shopping center lot.
google avatar

Kitty H.

Yelp
We went to ATM next door and stopped by to get a couple of egg rolls but unavailable. We ended up getting shrimp rolls $1.75 each. Place seems clean. Shrimp roll was tasty. Customer service was fair. They have a box where you open the door to retrieve food and pay via a slot on top of the box. I was amazed by it. First time to see one.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
I ordered a $15 Beef with String Beans and got loads of String Beans with really tiny amount of Beef. Chinese restaurants are the biggest rip off. Use your money to buy McDonald's, Gyro Sandwich for $10, Xtra large pizza pie for $15, whiskey burger with fries at Applebees, Half rotisserie chicken with 2 sides at Boston Market for $6 when theres a promo or $12 regular price.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
I was casually walking for lunch and noticed this little establishment. I made a right choice in stopping by. As any New Yorker, I've tried so many Chinese restaurants but by far I enjoyed the quality of service and food preparation. Even if all ingredients are the same as any other restaurant, the attention to detail when it comes to cooking the food was exceptional. It tastes better in my opinion and looks better as the image can show.
google avatar

Magnus L.

Yelp
I don't hate these guys really I don't, but the rice here is old and unsalvageable. It's incapable of being retaining sauce flavoring or being reheated in the microwave. If cooking fresh rice is that daunting a task maybe the restaurant business isn't for you! (That's 2 stars right there.) And on a side note, the bringing your kids to work thing is cute... until it isn't! Grandma? Auntie? Someone who's shift it is not restaurant, should really be watching those children at a completely separate location.

Yelp
We order from this place all the time - delivery and take out, it's 5 minutes down the block from our house and never had an issue. We just tried to call them to order delivery and they refused to service us because there was a 'problem and they don't deliver to us'. We are genuinely confused as to what this meant, we thought they were confused about our address or something but it turns out they're just straight up refusing to deliver to us. Who knows, maybe our neighbors downstairs had a problem with them but like WTF. I'm flabbergasted right now and don't even want Chinese food for dinner anymore. Cant wait to walk by their store and go in there and them be happy to see us because we go in there all the time, just for us to tell them to go fuck themselves. Terrible service. Never experienced anything like this before.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
This was the worst experience here. Boycott this place on Wednesday they are short staffed & you can wait 10-15 minutes to place an order. The woman at the front has long hair & it's not covered. Beware if you use a Credit Card over the phone, she repeats ALL of your information

James T.

Yelp
Their customer service was very strict with me about enforcing the details of their rules about the coupon on the menu, but they also turned out to be fair and nice about it. The bottom of the coupon says, "Not Including Lunch Special and Soda." That's right below the "Purchase of $40 or more" category. It turns out that it also applies to the categories of $30+ and $20+. I did not know that, and I ordered $20 worth of food with the full expectations of a free can of soda. They went over the rules of the coupon with me. I acknowledged that they were right and that I did not qualify for free soda. A man behind me on line said he was glad that they clarified the coupon rules out loud, because he also ordered about $20 worth of food and was expecting a free cabbage-filled eggroll. Customer service nicely led him to understand that on a technicality, he did not qualify. The quality of the restaurant's food was not too bad.

Richard S.

Yelp
I don't really like talking bad about businesses unless they totally deserve it but here this goes. Talk about unfriendly service with no smiles as if they were doing me a favor by making my overpriced tasteless food, ha. The chicken and broccoli large and spare rib ribs plain was $21, and ok if they had some chicken in it would be ok but 85% broccoli see pictures and be the judge. Also ribs dry even with bbq sauce used a dry sauce not the typical red laquer sauce used on ribs so avoid at all costs in my humble opinion this place entirely

Anthony M.

Yelp
We order from this place every time we are in the mood for some Chinese food... our order is never messed up and everything is always delivered in a respected timeframe...
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
This place is super convenient at night time. Especially if you get home late and places are closed. They have many different dishes and combination platters like any other Chinese food take out. They have loads of parking in the front and back. Also decent seating. The place is always clean or being cleaned which I like. I know so many restaurant that leave food and garbage on the tables. But this place always cleans up. The food here is okay. Just like any other Asian place. They are always nice here as well.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Ordered 3 soups, all were good. What I didn't like was seeing a thick layer of dirt on their ceiling fan, which makes me wonder how clean their kitchen really is

David G.

Yelp
The food here is decent. The prices are more expensive than the other Chinese takeout places in the area! The portions are a little below average. I told a young girl who didn't greet us at all to make the roasted pork well done she didn't! She had a nasty attitude like she's doing me a favor to come there! The condiments Are generous they leave the boxes of the sauce outside on the counter and you could take your own that's unusual for a Chinese restaurant because they usually are cheap when it comes to that. I would've added another star if they would've had a better attitude but very nasty very rude no thank you they don't care and I won't be coming back!

Bryan S.

Yelp
Horrible. Don't order for delivery from them they will mess up your order and then want to charge you to make their mistake right. They don't have good customer service. Thats how you lose business.
google avatar

Chelsea D.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best places to order from in the area. The food is almost always very good. We've only received one unacceptable order, which smelled awful and tasted terrible as well. They have a good lunch special (entree w/ fried rice/white rice/brown rice, soda, or soup) and a good combination platter special (entree w/ rice and egg roll), as well as the free can of soda after $10, but I prefer ordering food in pints and quarts. It tastes better because the sauces don't get all sopped up by the starch. The delivery is extremely fast. I swear, sometimes they're at the door before the promised ten minutes are up. And they take credit cards over the phone. $10 minimum to charge. The only downside about their service is that the woman who answers the phone is somewhat rude and doesn't always provide utensils, napkins, sauces, and fortune cookies when asked.
google avatar

Randy K.

Yelp
OPEN!!!! Great take out and now delivering. Missed them. All others open now are so bad! You will love most ordered. I believe they have a new chef but all items fresh and tasty
google avatar

Yelp
We were here for dinner, got ourselves the general tso's combination plate with white rice, the half fried chicken with plain fried rice, & a small egg drop soup. The fried chicken were decent. We like the general tso's chicken here. Lots of flavor! Delicious! The egg drop soup also were pretty good. The place looks clean. Service was decent, can't complaint. Generous portion! Spend $12 or more & you get a free soda or egg roll
google avatar

Jana W.

Yelp
The dumplings are terrible!!! Let me preface this by saying that I don't normally write bad reviews based on one experience. And I know this isn't a "dumpling spot." And I might even give this place another chance and try one of their lunch specials at some point. If I do I'll update. That being said, everything about my visit was negative. First of all, I almost didn't go in at all due to their B rating from the health department. I used to work in the food service industry and I know for a fact that getting an A isn't that hard. I generally stay away from anywhere that doesn't have an A rating, but this place was recommended to me and it's convenient to work. The service was lousy. Again, having worked in food services, I generally give people the benefit of the doubt. But the girl at the counter was downright rude and was difficult to understand. It wasn't even because of her English, it was just the way she mumbled. Still, I was looking forward to my dumplings. I love dumplings! I wasn't expecting it to be any Prosperity Dumpling (which I also reviewed), but I figured they would at least be edible! I ordered the pork fried dumplings, which come in a decent portion of 8. At least it would be decent if you actually liked them. They were soggy, undercooked, and the dough tasted gross. I ended up taking the meat out and only eat the part of the dough that had been browned some. The majority of the dumpling went to waste. All I could think of as I was trying to get them down was, "I paid over $5 for this??" That's right, it cost me $5.65. In the city I could get that for just a couple bucks and actually enjoy it, but out here it's almost $6 and is almost inedible. Normally I would try to end with something positive, but I got nothing. Like I said, I might give it one more chance for the actual meals, but it'll be a while before I work up the nerve for that. Oh, and the chairs were really uncomfortable too.
google avatar

Kai B.

Yelp
I ordered a pint wonton egg drop soup, eggplant and chicken with garlic sauce combination, and two vegetables rolls for delivery. Soup was okay to drink. The eggplant and chicken with garlic sauce combination was way too oily and heavy taste. I had stomachache all night long. The inside of vegetables rolls were still cold, which I ate a quarter of it and had to throw them out.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
I have been patronizing this restaurant since it opened. I have no complaint about the taste of the food. However, on November 1, 2016 I placed an order for food estaurant and found the following unsanitary conditions: None of the food cooks wore rubber gloves Ingredients used in the preparation of food to be cooked were picked up with bare ungloved hands The most disturbing thing that I witnessed is that one of the cooks passed a garbage can and he banged the metal ladle he used to stir the food in the wok on to the rim of a garbage can. Unfortunately, I will not be patronizing this restaurant in the future because of what I observed today.
google avatar

Omri H.

Yelp
Food is fine but the service is pooooooor. They pay you no mind. Try asking a question and they look at you like ur from the planet Zorkon. Either that or they will answer you with their backs turned as they walk away. If service isn't an issue then by all means, swing by but don't expect a warm greeting (or any greeting for that matter).

N L.

Yelp
I went to Peking House for dinner with my family and could not believe my bad time I had there. This is a common spot to go for good Chinese food, but today I went and got seated right away and after waiting 37 minutes for a waiter to take our order I decided to get up and leave. The manager who was busy chatting did not even see us leave. No one tried to stop us. I think it is very upsetting to wait that long and still have not given my order in. In the meantime 7 tables next to us already given there order and got there food.
google avatar

Ebony H.

Yelp
Food here is fantastic and always fresh however the customer service needs work. Fresh meadows is such a decent area with decent people so it's ashamed that this popular restaurant has horrible staff. My friend and I always order over the phone but since we were already outside, we decided to just go pick up our food. The prices went up dramatically but the part that got me was the lady at the counter. She was literally yelling at everyone and snapping. Not pleasant whatsoever and its ashamed. As I stated before, food is great, however the treatment here sucks. I recommend delivery
google avatar

Kristina F.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite Chinese Takeout Restaurant. Food is always delicious and prices are reasonable. I always come back to this place.

Theo T.

Yelp
I just ordered the spare ribs and I could tell they were not cooked that day. They were microwaved and became very tough. You just don't microwave ribs. This place used to be good and I loved the ribs but it has gone downhill.

A C.

Yelp
Found two separate hairs in my general tso's combination. That's all you need to know about this place.

D And D.

Yelp
Worst chinese takeout ever. Bland and they give you 90% rice. Brown sauce is super thick.
google avatar

Meng W.

Yelp
The lady who's taking the order is extremely rude. She definitely looks like she doesn't want to work and doesn't want anyone to come in to order. I felt like walking out but I already placed the order. Well I probably won't come back again I don't expect her to smile but at least don't scream.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
For me and my wife those is a reliable Chinese take out joint. Typical hike in the wall no frills spot. What we usually get are the pan fried noodles. They use the thin egg noodles here. We also love getting the egg foo young. This place uses real gravy for their sauce. Not the dark brown soy based sauce at other places. Other things like the egg drop soup and hot and sour soup are decent as well. Beef and eggplant and the chicken with garlic sauce are msg tasty too. Foods is made quickly as well. So all in all nothing super special just reliable quick Chinese taker out food. Plus they have a parking lot.
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
I was hoping to get some 3-star Chinese food, unfortunately that was a bit too much to hope for. We ordered the seafood noodle soup with chow fun, roast pork lo mein, beef chow fun, and pan fried dumplings. Everything was way too greasy. This was readily apparent as the food slid out of the plastic container and left a visible layer of oil. There was really no distinct flavor to any of the dishes. The noodle was served in 2 separate containers, so the chow fun was not absorbing all the broth. That was thoughtful. The fake crab stick was doubly fake. I normally expect the type that could be peel into strips of fake crab meat. However, this was a solid piece of grainy dough. The broth was clearly from a bouillon cube / powder. We had limited options, and this was close. Wasted calories, very unsatisfying.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
One the best Chinese take out restaurants in the neighborhood. I recommend shrimps with walnuts, beef chow fun and beef pan fried noodles. Delish. Just remind them of free soda if your order meets the deal minimum.
google avatar

Peggy S.

Yelp
I just moved to the area and having been trying a few food places out here and there. This place is right next to Citibank and the Natural Organic Supermarket so within walking distance to my home. I ordered the most basic Chineese food to test it out...Pork Fried Rice and an Egg Roll. The 2 women who were there to take my order and take my money were not friendly at all and if anything seemed annoyed. I should have known by then to walk out. The food was the worst chinese food I have ever tasted and I've had some serious chinese food over the years. The rice was yellow with a few pieces of pork and onions and tasted bland which is the cheepest and laziest version of doing fried rice and the egg roll was small and greasy but crisp. Halfway trhough I threw it out and I NEVER throw out food. I used to go to Chopstix in Brooklyn and they made they fried rice with huge chunks of pork, scallions, eggs, onions, beansprouts and the rice was a nice brown color from the soy they used. They have the best Chinese food hands down and the staff is great and they have an acclaimed chef who won all these awards running the place. Since its too far for me to hike it there I'll continue my search for "decent chinese food" in Fresh Meadows but please DO NOT WASTE YOUR $ OR APPETTITE HERE.

Yelp
I moved into the area around 9 months ago, and I went into this place to see it within the first few weeks. The staff behind the counter was pretty unfriendly (not rude, just kind of made me feel like I was a bother to them), but the food was okay. Pretty standard Chinese food for Queens. Someone complained to a person behind the counter, and it was resolved, but there was definitely a bad vibe. I saw some bad reviews on Yelp, but whatever. It wasn't a bad experience. A couple of weeks later, I walked in again, and there was another person behind the counter in addition to the first person I spoke to. I hoped she'd be more helpful, but I got the same indifference and annoyed attitude. This time, two separate customers complained about their orders, with contentious results from the staff. I started thinking that maybe the Yelp reviews were onto something, and when I got home, the food was pretty awful. I didn't even finish a quarter of it before giving up. Perhaps I was affected by what I saw, but either way, it wasn't good. Maybe I'm wrong about the place, but I haven't been back in the last 8 months despite walking past there all the time. So, there's that.
