Peli Peli’s Eyeing The Woodlands For Its Fifth Location - Eater Houston

"The team behind Peli Peli, Houston’s favorite restaurant chain dedicated to South African cuisine, has The Woodlands in its sights. Details on a lease provided by real estate broker CBRE Houston indicate that Peli Peli will open a location at 1201 Lake Woodlands Drive. The lease details indicate that the new location is 6,822 square feet. This would be Peli Peli’s fifth restaurant in Houston, joining outposts at the Galleria, Vintage Park, Katy’s Cinco Ranch, and an Austin location. The opening date for The Woodlands location in the former Mi Cocina space is slated for early summer 2019, Peli Peli’s Thomas Nguyen tells Eater." - Adele Chapin

A different kind of food with super cool atmosphere. The first thing I want to say about Peli Peli is that it has a super cool vibe even from the outside the building is colorful and inviting. They sat us at the bar because they only take reservations so I would definitely call ahead. The bartender was super nice and took care of us throughout despite having an almost full bar. Since neither my husband or I are experts in south African food we decided to go with the sampler and a couple of sides. The samosas were amazing! and the green cilantro sauce was also great. I was a little surprised at how small and expensive ($10) the lobster Mac & cheese was so I would definitely skip that next time. I would recommend trying new things instead of the usual fries or pasta. The sampler was enough for two - 3 people I would definitely recommend when first trying out this place. Not sure if they have a lot of vegan or veggie options but in my experience it was a LOT of meat, which we enjoyed. Next time you are at the Woodlands mall go check it out for a taste changer.

We enjoyed our first visit to Peli Peli. We started our meal off with the Trinchado from the SHEBEEN menu. The sauce was great, but we felt the ribeye was a bit overcooked and tougher than we prefer. We then ordered the Peli Peli chicken from the BRAAI Menu, as well as the Sandy Bay Seafood Platter from the CAPE Menu. Both our dishes were delicious and unique in their own ways. We really enjoyed our meal. Turn offs were 2 separate tables, one right next to us, using their cell phone, on max volume speaker phone. Several customers/guests were looking at both couples, separate tables, wondering why someone would be so obnoxious to behave this way, which also makes me curious as to why staff allowed it, or what about this establishment or the ambiance created the feeling of comfort for someone to think it was okay to be this inconsiderate to other guests enjoying their meals.

Everything from the hostess to the dessert was amazing. Mike our tour guide was great. It was our first time there. He answered any questions we had and helped us make some great choices. We will definitely be back. All of the sauces on the food were so good I wanted to lick the plates. Well done!!!

Carol was such a great server! The vegetarian friendly foods she recommended for us adults on this indecisive day were perfect! Even my children's grilled cheese and Mac and cheese were delicious. The grilled cheese was extremely flavorful not a basic grilled cheese. Also not pictured we had Rissoles for appetizer so delicious 😋🤤😋. I definitely recommend second visit. Definitely recommend.

Everything was amazing... from the service to the food and drinks! Although it was Thanksgiving and the staff was working on this holiday, everyone was amazing! Our server Lawrence, did double duty as bartender too and had the most amazing moustache! My 6 year old called him a true gentleman! Loved the attentiveness and attention to detail! Happy Thanksgiving!

Absolutely loved visiting here and I'm hoping I get to come back asap. We tried the south african chicken curry, the chicken espetasa with peli peli sauce, and the lamb samosas. The samosas and the espetasa was 10/10 delicious, the flavors were delicious and unique, the meat was incredibly juicy and tender. My friend was lukewarm about the curry, saying it was too sweet for them and missing something. I thought it was good, just not as outstanding as the other food we tried. Was less full of flavor than the other dishes. Overall we had a wonderful meal and I'm hoping I can get back to Houston to try more here asap. Highly recommend this place especially if the cuisine is unfamiliar to you

Stellar service, stellar food, so 5 stellar stars for Peli Peli. Don't be intimidated by the type of food. It's very approachable and something on the menu for everyone. The atmosphere is romantic, but not stuffy. I highly recommend the bobotie as an appetizer and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

Good service, very helpful staff, fairly tasty food, and a decent ambiance. The bunny chow was kind of bland; somehow, the crispy chicken sandwich was better! Those slap fries were amazing! Both the Trinchado and the Prego Roll were underwhelming in taste also; when the bread that comes with the meal is the only thing that has any flavor, that's not good. Even though the portions looked a bit small, they turned out to be perfect. After just a single dish, you will leave feeling full, so in that respect the food is a good value, but I do still feel it's a bit pricy for what you get, especially considering that most of the food is bland. It's a good location too: after your meal you can just walk around the mall, or if it's nice outside there's a sidewalk along the waterway you can meander down.
