Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Tokyo - Tokyo - The Infatuation

"Fluffy, soft, and tender, Japanese shokupan deserves every bit of the hype it gets. While you could try this milk bread at any old grab-and-go bakery dotted throughout Japan, Pelican Café does a dine-in shokupan experience, giving you time to really enjoy this shining fluffy superstar. There are seemingly endless options—fruit sandos stuffed with sweet strawberries and fresh whipped cream, carefully toasted golden brown slices topped off with melting pads of butter, and thick ham katsu sandwiches quartered and plated like a neat pile of legos. The original cafe is located in Asakusa Tawaramachi and has been going strong since 1945." - kiera wright ruiz

The 38 Essential Tokyo Restaurants

"Pelican Bakery has been baking white bread since 1942. The bread is so popular that all orders must be placed in advance for the privilege of purchasing a loaf. Pelican Café, which recently opened down the street from the bakery, is a chance for more people to try the sought-after bread. The menu focuses on toast and sandwiches, including a thick-cut ham katsu and another composed of fresh fruit with whipped cream. There are also toasts topped with cheese, sweet adzuki beans and butter, or simply butter and jam. The cafe is often busy, mostly with young people. Pelican is near the famous Asakusa district, home of the Asakusa Shrine, making it an easy stop for sightseers." - Yukari Sakamoto, Robbie Swinnerton

I came here on a Monday morning. There was already a queue at 8:55 am, so I had to wait for the second round. After about 25 minutes, I could finally go inside. People kept lining up non-stop, i guess it’s a very popular breakfast spot. I ordered the ham cutlet sandwich and hot coffee. The toast was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the coffee was tasty.

Nice, tidy toast place worth a casual visit, but not worth long waiting or long trip for sure. ❤️The butter is really nice ❤️English menu and English speaker staff I’ve heard about this place from SNS. There was barely a queue when I visited at 9am The set of toast + coffee costs 750 yen, which it’s fair. The toast looks cute, but tastes normal than expected: it’s a bit hard, and there is no dedicatedly crispy surface, but just a normal… toasted surface The ham sandwich tastes good because of the ham cutlet and the thin and balanced mayonnaise cabbage cuts. However, the bread is still normally toasted, and it’s a bit thick for you to eat elegantly It’s not bad, but a bit expensive in my point of view. Or at least, I wish the toast could be better made with a more unique taste

Went here dør breakfast, and they have a quite simple breakfast menu, not a whole lot to choose from - but that's okay. I had the char-grilled toast, which came with butter on top and orange jam on the side. It was actually really good, even though it just looked like an extra thick piece of toast. My friend had the fried ham and egg on toast, and it had a good mustard on it. They only serve regular coffee, but it is made pour over style, which I prefer when I can't have espresso drinks. The staff was kind and the food came quickly. A really nice place all in all!

Google
OG Breakfast Toast, eggs, and pork katsu is what this place is about and they do it right. They’ve been doing this for many many years. The thick sliced homemade bread is toasted on a charcoal grill and the pork katsu (not sure if it’s technically Katsu) goes perfectly together. The coffee is brewed in a unique Hong King type of way and is very different but good. It’s not a place for atmosphere but if you like original / authenticity, you should check it out. Not sure if it’s worth traveling a long distance for it but if your into thick toast, I highly recommend

Arrived without a reservation and got a waiting number, No. 65. Since the previous customers with numbers didn't show up, we only had to wait for about 20-30 minutes before being seated. The staff was friendly, and the food was incredibly delicious. We ordered four dishes and two drinks for two adults and one child—superb taste! We'll definitely come back next time.

We waited in the rain about 20 min. The carrot soup was delish. They had english menu. Mindful eating. Fruit sandwiches. Toast.

Enjoyed my experience at this famous cafe. Like a lot of other reviewers said, I did have to wait for my table, but not for too long. Food was good! The flavour was a little mild for my taste, but the bread was very well-baked.

Pelican sliced bread is probably my absolute favourite bread to buy whenever I'm in Asakusa. So it's inevitable that I'd eventually head to their nearby café. I visited around 4pm on a Tuesday and there were hardly any customers, so I was able to get a table immediately. Had the Grilled White Cheese on Toast and it was divine! It was a bit on the pricey side though, so it's not really gonna be a frequent thing. Maybe a visit once a month or so. One small gripe is that the service is a tad slow even though there were only 2 tables waiting for their orders.

Yelp
A cafe spun out of the nearby pelican bakery which specializes in white bread. I got there in the morning right as they opened and I was seated immediately. Note, it was a rainy morning and even then a line quickly formed. I got the ham cutlet sandwich because I was craving more than just toast. The ham cutlet was done very well with a thin layer of breading, and a thick cut of meat. Not too oily, and assembled with an appropriate amount of sauce and greens. The bread was super soft and delicate and was quite different compared to white bread I've had previously. This is probably due to the bread being quite fresh, whereas nothing like that is available in the US. Before this I was not a huge fan of white bread, but this definitely changed my mind! One piece of critique I have is that my bread wasn't tasted as deeply as the toast I saw others were getting. A crispier outside would have made this dish even better, but this was already a 5 star meal for me.

Yelp
We had the toast set which was a slice of toast with a fruit compote and butter with a coffee. You could choose different beverages if you like. The toast was very delicious. I was determined on our walk back to get a loaf on our walk past. I would be hand carrying this all the way home to Honolulu.
