Penicillin - Review - Central - Hong Kong - The Infatuation

"Penicillin loves to boast about being Hong Kong’s first “closed-loop sustainable bar.” What does that mean exactly? Essentially, they try to produce as little waste as possible, which means avocado pits are frozen and used as ice cubes and the rinds of fruits that are juiced become pickled, fermented, and find their way into your drink. The mission is notable, but without it, this would still be one of the city’s top cocktail bars. The drinks really succeed thanks to their interesting and well-done East-West alcohol bases like pistachio paste bourbon, mango curd gin, and pandan-infused vermouth. It’s a very small bar that’s always busy, but you can likely walk in on a weekday though. Expect to see people from around the world who seek out these type of fancy cocktail bars—we saw somebody wearing a shirt from Madrid-based speakeasy Salmon Guru when we were there last. photo credit: Carlo Mantuano" - Carlo Mantuano

We had a wonderful time at Penicillin! The vibes were chill, the drinks were creative and delicious, and the crew was warm and friendly. Penicillin champions sustainability and it's really cool to see how they manifest this into their bar concept. If you love a good drink (or a delicious kombucha) and you're in Hong Kong, please visit them!

Used to be a great bar in Hong Kong and was once on the World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2021. However, over the years, the quality has dropped. The cocktails are just okay, with a somewhat flat taste, even though the ingredients are interesting—but the execution falls short. The bar has become shabby, with the counter and furniture looking old and very dirty these days—it definitely needs a big clean-up. Not really worth the price anymore. The service is okay.

Atmosphere 8/10 Cool vibe inside, feeling a bit like an apothecary basement. Relatively small bar, overall. Only a couple of bar counter seats and some table seating at the wall. Not recommended for bigger groups. Cool interior design elements. The back bar is replaced by medicine bottles. Drinks 6/10 Recommendation: One Penicillin, One Tree Small cocktail menu. Drinks have either a sustainability or medicine touch. Personally, I was not a big fan of the flavors they mix. One Penicillin One Tree is a milky/creamy cocktail. The Original truly tasted like medicine. Service 9.5/10 Water on the spot, complimentary snack, and even a welcome drink served. The team speaks English and can explain the menu. Prices are average for Hong Kong.

On my last day in Hong Kong, I went bar hopping and received the friendliest service here, among other famous cocktail bars. All the drinks were creative and delicious, so I had to try as many as possible. Thank you, Jacob! The one with coconut oil whiskey was my favorite. I want to visit again!

The best cocktails I’ve ever had, the staff was really friendly, and the fried chicken is so delicious crispy on the outside and juicy inside, the cocktail with the basil leaf with the oyster taste is a must try. Just the standing tables are not that comfortable, maybe the bar can add some extra chairs for those tables. See you again next time when I’m visiting Hong Kong
