"One of Penn State’s most cherished traditions, Berkey Creamery has been serving freshly made ice cream and dairy products since 1865. The creamery is committed to promoting local food, sourcing about 70 percent of its milk from a herd of dairy cows living on the university’s campus and the remaining supplies from other local farms. All production and packaging take place in-house within Penn State’s Food Science Building. As far as flavors go, the decadent Death by Chocolate is a clear fan favorite, but flavors inspired by Penn State’s campus and history, such as Mint Nittany and Alumni Swirl, are also popular. First-timers should note that the creamery offers only one size of cup or cone, and mixing flavors is strictly forbidden. One sip of Berkey Creamery chocolate milk will ruin all other chocolate milks." - Victoria Gough

I recently visited Berkey Creamery during my niece’s graduation weekend at Penn State, and it was just as amazing as I remembered. This was my third time stopping by, and it never disappoints. I had the peach flavor, and it was absolutely delicious—creamy, fresh, and full of flavor. Other members of our group tried different flavors and loved theirs as well. The atmosphere has that fun, cool college-town vibe, and it’s always buzzing with energy. If you’re ever near the Penn State campus and in the mood for some seriously good ice cream, Berkey Creamery is a must-visit spot.

Delicious ice cream that is worth the usually long line! Although a tad pricey, they give you a very generous amount. The ice cream is not too melty, which I appreciate! Their flavors are always delicious; I enjoyed the Happy Happy Joy Joy flavor last time. I also love their death by chocolate, arboretum breeze, and peanut butter twist. I highly recommend stopping!

Aaaahhhh….The Penn State Creamery is top notch. The line moves quickly and the portion size is crazy generous. The flavors change daily so there is always variety. You heard it from me, this is one scoop you don’t want to miss! 🍨

Smooth & Delicious! Second time here and just as good as the 1st time! Even when the line is long, this team of workers were pumping it out and we got in and out in no time! Surprisingly, they all looked very happy to be working with ice cream...i know I'd be! A+ all around!!!

Penn State Berkey Creamery’s butter pecan ice cream is a creamy, nutty delight with generous pecans. At $6 for a huge scoop, it’s a steal! Fun vibe, but expect lines. A must-try in State College.

It’s a rainy and cold day, but the Creamery is hopping. The indoor tables are full and many people are outside at those tables. Although the line is long, it moves quickly. The people working here are friendly and helpful. The ice cream is fantastic! It’s creamy and delicious and reasonably priced. The parking is tough. There’s a parking garage around the corner but we didn’t want to pay for parking. There’s a lot nearby so we tried that and got a warning on our windshield not to park there again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 Penn State Berkey Creamery Penn State Berkey Creamery, a Happy Valley icon since 1865, is America’s oldest university creamery, located at 119 Rodney A. Erickson Food Science Building, University Park, PA 16802. Nestled near Beaver Stadium and East Residence Halls, it’s easily accessible with parking at the East Deck on Bigler Road. This beloved spot, named after Earl and Jeanne Berkey, blends education, research, and indulgence for Penn State’s Food Science Department. Famous for its rich, 14.1% butterfat ice cream, the Creamery crafts over 120 flavors, with 20–24 available at its retail store. Fan favorites include Peachy Paterno (peach with peach slices), Cherry Quist, WPSU Coffee Break, Bittersweet Mint, and quirky picks like Happy Happy Joy Joy (coconut, almonds, chocolate chips). Using milk from Penn State’s 210-cow herd and local suppliers, ice cream goes from cow to cone in four days. No flavor mixing is allowed to prevent allergen issues and speed up service—lines can stretch long, especially post-game. They serve 750,000 cones and 700 milkshakes daily, with generous scoops often enough for two. Beyond ice cream, they offer cheeses, sherbet, coffee, and baked goods. Pints, quarts, and gallons are available for takeout, packed with dry ice, and online orders ship to 48 states via creamery.psu.edu. Starting in the “College Barns,” the Creamery grew into a global influence—Ben & Jerry took its ice cream course in 1892. Relocated in 2006, it employs over 100 students and hosts renowned dairy courses. The vibrant atmosphere, with indoor seating and an outdoor courtyard, buzzes with nostalgia and energy. Whether grabbing a cone or shipping a pint, Berkey Creamery is a must-visit for creamy, dreamy treats that embody Penn State pride.

Truly spectacular ice cream in both familiar and new flavors. The facility is beautiful and clean as well. No trip to State College would be complete without a stop at the creamery.
