Yelp
3.5 stars. Penn Sushi was a first time experience for lunch today. And I have to add, I was pleasantly surprised.
I passed by several times in the past but was apprehensive questioning the quality of the fish considering I've had major food poisoning several times. After all, this place is situated in a train depot/station.
Perhaps I was feeling daring today, not to mention I was very much in the mood for sushi AND it was cold/windy out.
That's when Penn Sushi stepped in.
Originally on my way to Chickpea both on the upper concourse of Penn station, I dropped by Penn Sushi first.
It is a very small hole in the wall but I saw fresh sushi varieties being prepared by the chefs behind the counter. There was much to select from in terms of packaged rolls as well as gyoza, seaweed salad, Kim chi, Japanese snacks, soups and bubble/hot tea.
I selected the spicy tuna with black rice. A portion of 9 generous pieces, this was really delicious: fresh, soft and flavorful. I detected a unique taste offered by the black rice. This packaged delight was $7.81.
In addition, I got kimchi At $3.99, I combined both Korean and Japanese cuisines very much to my satisfaction.
There are no tables/chairs since it is just takeout, but I think Penn Sushi is a solid choice in the area serving travelers and workers alike. It's obviously not a 5 star restaurant, but in my opinion, a good alternative to the franchise options.
I'll return.
