Pepe's & Mito's - Review - Deep Ellum - Dallas - The Infatuation

"Pepe’s & Mito’s has been a Deep Ellum mainstay since 1994. Regulars pile into tables against a vibrant Frida Kahlo mural and brick walls covered with framed pesos, yellowing headshots of Mexican actors, and even painting of a margarita-sipping parrot—gifts from loyal diners. It’s homey, laid-back and exactly where you want to be for lunch. Everyone’s here for the stewy Tacos Norteños: fajita meat simmered in chipotle wine sauce that lands on a bed of four, street-sized corn tortillas. That saucy, smoky first bite will have you hooked. You won’t find them anywhere else, and they’re the reason first timers become lifers. Add a frozen margarita and you have the perfect Dallas leisurely lunch. photo credit: Brock DuPont" - Desiree Gutierrez

Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"Yes, there is good Tex-Mex in every part of Dallas, including Deep Ellum. This long-running spot owned by the Rojas family serves up savory chipotle enchiladas in a wine sauce as a signature dish, plus wonderful tortilla soup and beef guiso with onions, potatoes, and mild peppers in a Mexican stewed tomato sauce. There are vegetarian fajitas, pescado Veracruz (fried catfish with a celery-based salsa Veracruz), and chimichangas with a choice of meats and queso. It is also open for brunch on the weekends. Inside is a cave — dark, well-worn, and marked by the bright red walls. As with all places in Deep Ellum, parking is an adventure." - Amy McCarthy

Food was delicious, music was a vibe, hostess was very welcoming, margaritas were just right, and the atmosphere was perfect. Prices were set just right. It's good for dinner with friends, date night, or family outing. Highly recommend coming here. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Google
We were looking for a place to eat in Deep Ellum, and we found this pleasant place. The tortilla chips were still warm when served. The food was tasty, and the portion size was just right. They need to improve in speed as it took about 30 minutes to get our main order served.

Google
I was craving some authentic Mexican tacos but also queso and this place hit the spot! Queso was good. My date got the Albondigo soup which was very delicious. I got their pork carnita tacos and they were absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and tender. Rice was also delicious and so were the margaritas! Apparently they were on diners, drive ins and dives and I absolutely see why! So delicious!!!

Pepe’s and mitos Wednesday and Friday 4-9 $4 house margaritas and $4.50 flavored margs! Absolutely love this place, the staff are so welcoming and we just stop in for a marg and some chips and salsa and love it! 10/10 recommend! (Margaritas are a little on the stronger side! )

I had a blind date here and we enjoyed the margaritas. The food is fresh and authentic, it was loud and fun. I enjoyed my food and one drink had me buzzing. Love it

Yelp
This is a hometown hero local, you can tell just by the outside of the building. It's right near the train station as well, so very easy to access. Been here for 30 years plus, so you know the love is in the building. The food was impressive. Everything here taste fresh and the waitress was accommodating. Authentic!!!

Yelp
I spent the last week in Dallas on business and figured I'd try to hit a few new places. I like hitting restaurants that were on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, so I was please to find this spot near downtown Dallas. My conference ended a bit early, and the lunch was pretty bad so I skipped it. Once I got to P&M's I was famished and ready to tuck in. However, it was early - about 5PM, and I knew I'd be hungry again before bedtime. So, I ordered bean & cheese nachos to eat at the restaurant and mixed (chicken & beef) fajitas for a late dinner in my room. As always, the chips and salsa set the mood, and I really enjoyed these. The salsa has just the right amount of heat - spicy enough to get your attention, but not enough to really burn. The chips were warm and tasted fresh, both in the basket as well as on the plate of nachos. The nachos had good servings of refried beans and cheese and were super enjoyable, except for the guacamole. It tasted fresh, but bland and needed a good shot of salt to have any real flavor. The fajitas were still good after sitting for several hours. The tortillas were homemade and very good and the beef fajitas were well seasoned. The chicken, unfortunately, was bland... almost no flavor at all. The refried beans were okay, but the rice had no flavor. As far as the service goes, I was pretty surprised to find I was the only customer in the restaurant, even though it was early. The chips and salsa were brought immediately and my order was taken pretty quickly. It didn't take too long for the food to come, but then everyone disappeared. No refill on my drink, my salsa, my chips, or anything else. Overall, some of the food was average, some was good and the service was meh.

Yelp
Food was fresh. I got bean nachos. I asked for light cheese but it was very cheesy. Prices average around $20 a meal, maybe due to the neighborhood. The jalapeno margarita was hitting!! Salsa had a slight spice. I loved the crema. There aren't many vegan options for anyone with those restrictions.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Sooooo authentic and fresh. Margaritas were nice and strong. Service was friendly and fast. It's in deep Ellum, old building but well kept. I'd definitely recommend the cheese enchiladas and the fajita nachos.

Yelp
Found this quick & casual Mexican restaurant in Deep Ellum, perfect for on the go lunch. The service was only ok; the staff was very friendly and polite, however the service was on the slow side. There was noticeable wait for service and the check. Now the food: we ordered Tacos Norteños (as featured by Guy Fieri) & Chilaquiles. Both dishes were delicious. The taco meat was super flavorful. The chilaquiles was on point, the chips were very crispy and the chorizo had the perfect level of spice. The complementary chip and salsa were welcoming bonuses, try not to eat too much of those and leave room for the entrees! If we're in the area, we'd come back again and we'd recommend this spot to others. Enjoy!

Yelp
My husband and I were on an unexpected quick trip to Dallas a few days ago and stayed nearby this place in Deep Ellum. Such a cool neighborhood! We hoped to grab some good Tex-Mex food while in town and Pepe's & Mito's had pretty good reviews so we headed there. We had no trouble getting a table and the staff was friendly and attentive. Lucky us, we happened to be there during happy hour! I had the house margarita on the rocks while hubby had a frozen strawberry margarita. At $5 each, they were a good deal while also being strong and tasty! They brought out warm chips with good salsa while we looked over the menu. I ended up getting a "House Speciality" item - Shrimp Enchiladas, which are served with rice, beans, and salad. At $18.95, I felt they were a tad pricey. But my husband had some of mine because he only ordered a Tortilla Soup. We would come back here again, especially during Happy Hour!

Yelp
We are from Louisiana and staying in deep ellum for a couple of months. We love texmex so first thing we did was ask the locals where best Tex mex was in area and they all said pepes and Mito's was the place to go! We went for lunch and it didn't disappoint. We were sat very fast and the promptly brought chips and salsa. They have huge chips and a sweet flavored salsa. It was very good. We went through 2 bowls of chips . My wife got the #1 beef enchiladas with rice and beans. It was very good, she let me sample it. I got the #14 carne al chipotle. It's a chicken breast covered in a delicious chipotle wine glaze. With beans and rice. It was to die for. It may not look very fancy from outside or inside but they can really cook great meals! Really wanted to sample a margarita but had too much to do that day. I will definitely be back before I go home. If you're in area and want a great lunch spot check them out. Just be sure to check to see if they are open. They kind of have crazy hours.

Yelp
05/20/2023 Saturday 4:45pm. After seeing to Kill a mockingbird at fair park we popped in to this well know establishment. The salsa is legit. A tad bit of cumin and great tomato flavor. Not too spicy! We both ordered combination plates me an enchilada dinner and he combo #3. They were both solid choices. Hot and melty cheese! Not my favorite Mexican food but a good choice.

Yelp
Wow wow wow. I'm a New Yorker and last time that I visited Texas, ten years ago, I remember how amazing the food was. Fast forward to today, I will remember how good and tasty this food was for the next ten years. The Paloma was amazing the dried grapefruit was a nice touch. I got the shrimp chipotle, and was very pleased with the dish. It was tasty, authentic, not too spicy the shrimp or camarones were fresh juicy tender and quite extraordinary. Even the rice and beans were delish. The food came with grilled veggies and it was the best part. All in all don't hesitate to go here. Hopefully it won't take me ten years to come back!!

Yelp
Food is good, margaritas are great! I went for happy hour, very very reasonable drinks. I would highly recommend adding coconut to their house margarita. It's not syrupy or overly sweet. They also have complementary chips and salsa. We also tried the queso, it was big enough to share (4 people). Guy Fieri has recommendations on the menu from when he was there on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I tried the Tacos Norteños that were featured and it was delicious. The portions are large so I left with lunch for the next day. The servers were very attentive with drink refills and chip refills. They even gave me chips and salsa to go! It's a cute place that has lots of space. Paid parking is available close to the restaurant.

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town and stopped by this place because of the information from Guy Fieri. First off the staff, there was very kind, cordial and very professional. I ordered the spicy shrimp quesadillas and was Very close to achieving the point of being blown away. The shrimp is very fresh, and I had my reservations about it being spicy, but I think they literally meant that the shrimp was full of spices and flavoring rather than the spice you would expect in terms of heat or hotness. in all seriousness, I did not set my expectations too high, even though the Reverend Fieri had given it strong endorsements. I would say that in all fairness, this restaurant deserves my five star rating, but I use them sparingly, and would be happy to give it a fifth star when I return and the experiences as pleasurable, or if not more. * editorial footnote: it really does deserve a five star rating because this was ahead of the mars Volta concert, which was nothing short than biblical and gives one that sensation of making all experiences

Yelp
Great food! No complaints!!! Service was great. This restaurant is a staple of the Deep Ellum neighborhood! The Chile Relleno is awesome, and the chips and salsa is great as well!
google avatar

Yelp
I had a chimichanga for lunch and it was ok, nothing out the ordinary. Rice and beans were pretty good, cheese inside the chimichanga wasn't melted and queso on the outside was cold. Left lots of room for Improvement

Yelp
Great place to sit down and enjoys some great Mexican food with a beer or soda me and my wife loved it.

Yelp
We had the Tacos Nortenos and Pollo Al Mojo De Ajo, both were really good. Loved the chipotle wine sauce on the tacos! Margarita was very good, as well.

Yelp
Happened to be in the area for work and saw this spot on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives list - definitely a must hit spot for no frills, delicious Tex-Mex. I walked in on a weekday for lunch and had no trouble getting a table for one. Service was so kind and efficient. They had a great menu for lunch specials, so I decided to try the beef chimichanga with queso, and it comes with rice and beans. They also bring out chips and salsa to start - so delicious and I love the little bit of heat in the salsa. Chimichanga was crispy, savory, juicy and the queso was just so good I would've licked the plate. Definitely have to come back to try some other items on the menu. While looking around, everyone's food looked amazing.

Yelp
5 dollar margaritas during happy hour, who can say no? The owner was really kind and full-filed my ask to add tajin sauce in my margaritas. Service is great! Really Mexican I think. Love it!
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Good food and great margaritas at happy hour! Had 2 margaritas and a shrimp cocktail for less than $30 and they were all delicious! The server was good but spread thin. The hostess stepped in to help when needed, but they are struggling with staff it looks like,...like many places. But this place is great and worth the visit!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem!! I was trying to book a dinner res for a huge party (15) in Deep Ellum for my birthday, and many of the places I looked needed an event planner and a minimum spend of $800 and all this stuff. I asked the internet where they recommend for a big group, and four separate people recommended Pepe y Mito's, so I knew it had to be good! They had our table ready for us before our reservation and we just had to wait til our whole party was there. While they were busy on a Saturday night, they got our order 100% correct, drinks and all, and service was fast! The food was great and there's lots of variety. They have really cute menus too. I had a sangria swirl margarita and they had a LOT of flavor options. I know my friends tried strawberry and peach, and there were also coconut, blue, mango, raspberry? Too many flavors to count, which is a great problem to have. Drinks were $8.50 which is pretty solid for Deep Ellum. I had the Botanas appetizer plate which is a genius little deal. It has 4 quesadillas, 4 chicken flautas, 4 nachos, and queso. YUM. My boyfriend had the street tacos which looked amazing. I know everyone was super happy with their food, and with the prices. I highly recommend this place for group dining or just for a night out!

Yelp
I came here for dinner craving some Mexican food and I was not disappointed! Firstly , the exterior is simply delightful boasting in Mexican pride and this same vibe when you are happily greeted upon walking in. The moment I received the warm chip n salsa , I knew it was going to be happy ( and I added queso of course which was perfect). I opted for the fajitas , a Modelo and quesadilla to go . They even had the homemade hot sauce which was spot on . The food was excellent and not overly seasoned . Steak was fresh , tender and all of the sides were superb ! Service was prompt, friendly as well and the whole experience was exceptional . I will be back for sure !!! Gracias

Yelp
Let's start off with the fact that the owner is the most amazing woman. Always there working, and always has a smile on her face. This place has the greatest chips and salsa. So difficult to stop eating them before the food comes out and can't count how many times my fam and I have gotten too full from them, then had to take the food home. Margaritas, on point. Lastly, the chipotle cheese enchiladas. Get em. They're amazing. Or, get the ribeye a la tampiquena. Comes with one chipotle cheese enchilada, ribeye cooked perfectly, side of tortillas. Salivating as I write this damn review. That's it, I'm out, heading there now after writing this.
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
Despite having to wait several minutes to sit down on a busy Saturday night, the food and service made it worth the wait. There was one woman in particular who was a force of nature. She was working tirelessly to ensure people were checked in, taking orders and refilled items when they were empty (even without us having to ask). I ordered the chicken chimichangas and they were delicious! Crunchy on the outside with tender and flavorful chicken on the inside. The chipotle enchiladas were equally good, with a flavorful sauce and tender chicken on the inside. Having been to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Amarillo, Pepe's & Mito's has the best Tex-Mex out of all of the other places I have tried. I definitely recommend this restaurant and cannot wait to return in the future!
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
Best Tex-Mex in town. Try the Tacos Nortenos. Great service. Great hospitality. Try it once and you will become a regular.

Shera F.

Yelp
Love the tacos especially the Tacos Norteños. We always come with a large group and they always have room for us.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere however disappointing to be told you can't get a drink with light ice. I've been bartending for 12 years and never refused a customer a small amount of ice. When an establishment does it means they want the drink to look fuller but are cheating you out of alcohol. Not cool.

Yelp
We had a quick lunch at Pepe & Mito's in Deep Ellum. I had not recently eaten the food at this restaurant, despite the fact that I remember it being featured on the Food Network's show: Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives. We have certainly been missing out on some fantastic Mexican cuisine. The tortilla soup, which we first ordered, was quite tasty and not unduly spicy. Next, we ordered the house margarita, which was incredibly refreshing to drink on a hot summer day and contained top shelf tequila (tequila herradura). Finally, we ordered the steak fajitas, which were simply phenomenal with homemade flour tortillas, fresh guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo to top the tacos, and the beef was perfectly seasoned and grilled. I can't wait to stop by Pepe & Mito's next time I'm visiting Deep Ellum.

Rhonda M.

Yelp
Why would I pay $7 for parking just to have lunch which is to cost me a good $50 so, no thanks. There are plenty of great Mexican restaurants around that don't charge for parking

Yelp
My daughter & went here for lunch one day w/ my grandson. I chose this place because we were in Dallas & I saw it had been on DDD so I wanted to go check it out. Silly me though being so excited to try the food that Guy had tried I forgot to take pics ‍of the food! Also my grandson was trying to get a hold of everything he could so I was a little distracted. I ordered the albondigas soup (that's what they claimed Guy tried). It was t like any albondigas soup I've ever had. At first glance it doesn't even look appealing. My daughter & I both kind of look at each other when our waiter set it in front of me. Then the smell hit me & that made we wince I suppose because my daughter said what's wrong. I said it smells funny. So I tasted it, I'm not sure what potent seasoning they use but it smacks right in the face the whole time your eating it. I have to say I ate almost all of it but it's not something I would order again. My grandson spit his bite out! My daughter said no after her bite. She ordered chicken fajita tacos & she did enjoy those. I can't vouch for them because I didn't taste them. Overall the waitstaff was awesome. It was a little over priced but what isn't now days & I had to pay to park which sucked. So I can probably say I won't be back unless someone else is buying LOL

Yelp
I love "hole in the wall" restaurants - and have been wanting to try this place for years. It is a great family owned place, small interior and a matching patio that's fenced in. Very nice. Very good Tex Mex! I took a work friend group for someone's birthday. We walked in right at 11am, promptly seated. Chips, salsa and drinks hit the table quickly. There are parking lots (pay) adjacent and beside it. The salsa has a little kick but I always ask for something more spicy - and they had it. A little ramekin of spicy salsa that is addictive and hits the spot. A large guacamole for the table to share. My friends ordered from the lunch menu and I had to try the Guy Fieri recommended abalgondo soup. A nice, light broth and three lovely little ground beef, veggie patties. The bowl seems small but I was plenty full and would definitely order it again! It's perfect for Tex-Mex and I can't wait to sit on their patio. If you get there right at 11am, you'll have no trouble getting in. Until next time, P&M! Well? What are YOU waiting for? Go there. Get some. Life is too short for boring food!

Yelp
I am reading these reviews and want to know how anyone could ever give this a 5-star or even close to that. To be fair, I live in a geographical area that is a melting pot for many different cultures to include different regions of Mexico. Because of where we are located, we have eaten our fair share of Mexican food. This includes just not at my home region, but also border cities and other border states. This is the farthest thing from a 5-star authentic restaurant I have ever eaten at. For those of you that think I am crazy by my opening paragraph let me ask you this. Have you ever been to an "authentic" Spanish restaurant and received canned jalapeno's? Not fresh, literally canned jalapeno's. We were in the area and figured why not give this place a try. I mean it has some amazing reviews. We enter, get seated, and our order is placed. One appetizer we ordered was the nachos. Had five million times before from other restaurants. The nachos come and they have canned jalapenos. I am absolutely appalled and shocked that this is going to be their presentation. Somehow a canned item does not scream authentic. Fast-forward to the main course. I eventually get my main course, which was chicken enchiladas. This is another item I have eaten five million times also. The enchiladas come out and they are the smallest I have ever seen. Literally, it turns into a joke at the table. It was almost like they took a streetcar vendor tortilla and tried to stuff it, except they hardly put anything in it. If this was my impression of an authentic restaurant, it would have me wondering. After eating here, I think Taco Bell is a trillion times more authentic than this place. Save the money, time, and aggregation and find another place to eat at.

John D.

Yelp
This place was on the edge of the Deep Ellum area, so we thought we would give it a try.... It looks a little run down around it, but the restaurant was clean, really good service, and the food was pretty good. We had the chimichanga, which was a little different than a normal chimichanga, but still good. The refried beans were really good, better than most places, and the potions were a touch smaller than I'm used to at Mexican places, but still a lot of food. I would come back again,

Yelp
Pepe's & Mito's is SUCH a great restaurant! Everything from start to finish is phenomenal. Salsa and chips, margs, entrees. Everything. I'm not even that big of a salsa fan but there's is delicious. A little spicy which I personally prefer! The server was great the prices are reasonable and the food was just absolutely delicious! HIGHLY recommend the pineapple margarita which wasn't on the menu. I ordered the Pollo Al Mojo De Ajo and I would have a hard time coming back here and ordering anything else because it was that good!
google avatar

Marsha T.

Yelp
This is a great Mexican restaurant. The food and margaritas are really delicious. I'm here at 2 pm on a Wednesday Jan 11th 2023. I highly recommend you try this place.

Kevin S.

Yelp
We've been going to Pepe's & Mito's for about a year now, and it is our favorite Mexican restaurant around. We eat here just about every week! It's family owned, and they make everyone feel like a guest in their home. The food is spectacular. Great variety, great flavors, always delicious! We haven't tried everything on the menu, but at least half of it between ourselves and others we've taken here. Nothing has been short of delicious! The restaurant is a quaint little building, that feels like you've stepped into a cantina in Cabo or Cancun.

Yelp
Great service and amazing food every time. Yum. This place and team is a must stop in Dallas. Family owned and great place to visit frequently. A Land Rover destination dining experience.

Yelp
Ive come here 3 times now because it's one of the very few Tex Mex places in deep ellum,I'll start by saying the service is always great the atmosphere is nice but the food is very mediocre,I had the guisado,it was was to tomato based and had too much acidity,I liked the famous guy fiery tacos but not that much I wouldn't go back just for the them They were good not great.enchiladas meh.nothing special here at Least to me.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food. Variety of choices on the menu. Restaurant was clean and staff were attentive. Portions were generous as well, that we all had to request take-home containers. My party of 4 arrived maybe 30 mins before closing and they were still able to accommodate us past their business hours. Highly recommend if you're looking for some delicious Mexican food in downtown Dallas!

Yelp
This restaurant was amazing! Everything we ate was delicious! We randomly popped in, and it was the best Tex-Mex we'd ever had.

Yelp
Salsa was spicy and delicious. Tacos were also tasty. Our server (name starts with an S (sorry, I forgot)) was very friendly and attentive. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp

Yelp
While visiting Dallas, we had heard about this restaurant. So glad we stopped in for lunch! Great service and food!
google avatar

Yelp
The pastor and cartina tacos were so good! The rice was delicious and so moist and full of flavor. The chips and salsa was great as well. The waitstaff was a bit slow and it was not busy as we were there at 3 in the afternoon with just a few other customers present but they were very friendly. Overall the food was amazing and we would highly recommend and come back.

Yelp
We visited while in town looking for authentic Mexican food finding Pepe's & Mito's close to our location. The restaurant is in a trendy artsy neighborhood. There is a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant which was pricey at $20. There may be other parking options but not being from the area we went with easy. Service was great. We were quickly seated and served delicious warm chips, salsa and our drinks. I decided to try the Tacos Nortenos (based on several recommendations). While it was good - it wasn't an oh wow moment for me. My son had a combo with a beef taco. He said the taco was one of the best he's had. Portion sizes were plenty and overall a good dinner out.

Yelp
We were watching DIners Drive inns and Dives and so this place come up in Dallas. Just happen to be in Dallas for the weekend so gave it a try. Loved it. Brick interior with open rafters visible. Nice decor. Traditional settings. Nice as the ownerr called it "mex Tex" style nachos and sals were homemade and tasty. GF had thE pork carnitas tacos and I had the taco AL Carbon with extra spicy hoUse sauce . Will venture back!

Yelp
Love P&M's. Been going here for at least 15 years. Great spot with fun atmosphere in Deep Ellis. Love their breakfast quesadillas. I usually get their guiso for lunch/dinner. Really great. Service is always solid. They're tortillas keep me coming back. Seem to be handmade and cooked to perfection. Great margaritas as well.

Yelp
Walked in 20 minutes ago. Sat at the bar that only had 2 people at it. Bartender ignored us for 18 minutes. Then sent a server to tell us she was "busy" with a large party and to move to the dining room. Needless to say we left and won't return. It was our first time and we had such high hopes but ... oh well.

Yelp
While in Dallas for a work event , I went to Pepe's and Mira's and it was amazing. The margaritas were the best I have ever had , not watered down... I had the chicken and streak fajitas and they were amazing! My coworker had the Ribeye and he loved it ! Best customer service and great environment! We went there two days in a row.

Yelp
I have been a frequent customer at Pepe's for almost 14 years! The food is so good - I really cannot understand where the 1 and 2 star reviews are coming from?! The chips and salsa are always so fresh and delicious! The margaritas are some of the best in deep Ellum, and although they are on the smaller side - they pack a punch! My favorite thing on the menu is the tacos Nortenos- they are DIVINE! If I don't opt for those, I switch it up with the enchiladas or beef fajitas (add a side of shredded cheese which is always fresh and yummy!) ... the service is awesome. Fermin has been there for as long as I've been a customer and greets me (and my colleagues who have also been going with me the past 14 years!) by name. We sit at the same table (or in the same area) pretty much every time, and they really take care of us. Pepe's for lunch is a no brainer! Sandy (the owner) is always there, and works really hard right along side her employees. The ambiance is good - music playing and they also have a touchtunes if you want to switch it up yourself. Overall 10/10! I love Pepe's. Full disclosure - parking can be a bear if the (pay to park) lot next to the restaurant is full. There is a lot across the street as well- but if you're looking for free parking - it's pretty scarce. Parking is around $5/$6 for 2 hours so not bad (it was higher a few months ago)
