Where to find open Drive In diners in Minnesota - Eater Twin Cities

"Slurp on a thick, old fashioned shake – but don’t overlook the rest of the wide-ranged menu. Appetizers like spicy battered pickle spears, mini tacos, and more accompany several chicken sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs. Teddy Bear Park is closed for now, but basking in the building’s pink exterior with car service or takeout still gives guests a break from at-home dining." - Lauren Pahmeier

Google
Such a cute place! The double cheeseburger is soooo good and I’m sure the specialty burgers are just as good. The chicken tenders and fries are good as well. The service is great and quick for a busy weekend! There is space to sit outside or you can eat in your car with a window tray table!

Google
Great Drive In in Delano! Super friendly service, and our onion rings and shake were being brought out almost as fast as we sat down at one of their outdoor dining tables. Watching all the other families food orders coming out I can't wait to go back to try some of their other meals!

Google
Food is good, tried Wild rice sandwich and Cajun chicken sandwiches, both are good. Raspberry shake is too good. Service was quick and people are helpful. Good for an hour or so hangout with kids. Kids have enough space to play and adults can enjoy tree shaded spaces.

There is no better destination on a warm summer night, the Peppermint Twist Drive In has the ice Cream treats of your dreams. Plus the burgers are really good too.

Peppermint Twist is an absolute gem nestled in the charming town of Delano. This delightful little spot exudes a classic drive-in style ambiance, perfect for indulging in some mouthwatering comfort food. From the moment you get to Peppermint Twist, you are greeted with warm smiles and friendly faces, creating an inviting and enjoyable atmosphere. Now, let's talk about their menu. Prepare yourself for a culinary journey that will transport you back in time. Their shakes are a heavenly treat, boasting rich, creamy flavors that will leave you wanting more. And let's not forget their classic burgers! The Double Bacon Burger, in particular, captured my taste buds with its perfect blend of seasonings. Cooked to perfection, each bite was a harmonious symphony of flavors. The attention to detail in crafting their burgers is evident, as they carefully select the freshest ingredients and pay meticulous attention to the cooking process. The result? A solid, satisfying burger that leaves a lasting impression. I savored each bite, relishing the combination of juicy, flavorful meat, crispy bacon, and a soft, toasted bun.

Google
What a great place to stop and grab a bite of delicious food! Fries are exceptional, cooked to perfection, burger was super tasty, chicken sandwich was amazing, bun was perfect and the butter scotch milkshake was excellent. Definitely stop by and check the classic drive in dinner.

Google
Excellent bacon double cheeseburger with BBQ sauce! The BLT chicken sandwich was GREAT. Nice thick onion rings too. The staff was top notch! We had an incident with the drinks being delivered and they quickly helped out! AWESOME experience, we will return! Delicious raspberry shake, that was a first for us!

Google
Hands down, one of my favorite places to go! Delicious food & friendly staff! Such a fun and cute place to eat!

Yelp
Nice place to hangout and eat. Service was good and quick with quite a few customers there. Burgers were delicious! The onion rings and fries were cooked well and still pretty hot. We topped it off with a delightful chocolate shake! Mmm mmm:)

Yelp
ehhhh. Overrated for food. The shakes are good. The wait can be ridiculous. The food: greasy and really not that good, and the fries aren't fries they are wedges. The onion rings were only ok. Not worth the wait IMO.

Yelp
We returned again to the Peppermint Twist. We've now been visiting here for over 6 years. This has become an annual destination visit for us. There are just not many drive-ins left anymore and we really enjoy the Peppermint Twist. This day I decided to try the pork tenderloin while my wife went with popcorn chicken. We also ordered some onion rings and of course a couple of shakes. The pork tenderloin was excellent. Crispy and juicy. Served with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Really good sandwich. My wife said the popcorn chicken was good and that also came with fries. We shared a half order of onion rings which was more than enough. The onion rings were big and crunchy. We always order a peppermint shake and a fresh raspberry shake. Both are delicious. We enjoyed our meal and look forward to returning again to the Peppermint Twist.

Yelp
Peppermint Twist is a gem! The service is always great and the shakes are to die for! Raspberry is my favorite flavor. Sometimes the wait times a bit long for the food but if you're looking for a quick sweet treat, definitely stop here for the shakes! I love the outdoors seating and being able to enjoy the sun and fresh weather. The kids always love coming here because there's lots of things for them to interact with.

Yelp
A unique experience for sure. I still remember how oddly decorated this place was with all the stuffed animals on the roofs and the vibrant pink and green color scheme. The milk shakes are generously sized and are a good value. The onion rings and fries are also delicious.

Yelp
The owner was incredibly rude while I was parked nearby the bathroom while my child was in the restroom dealing with an upset stomach from medication he was taking from a previous procedure. His aggressive behavior was uncalled for especially after just having spoke to his wife who assured me I was okay to park where I was. There was plenty of room for cars to pass by and I was only parked there for 7 minutes. if you don't have compassion and patience for your customers then I will no longer support your establishment. This used to be a destination for us each summer but is no longer a place I feel comfortable to bring my family and friend.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and wonderful burgers. Lots of room for kids to play while adults finish eating.

Yelp
Celebrating with my mom before she headed back down south with burgers and a shake. We had to let her try one of the best joints in town. This place is unbelievably the best I have ever had for a drive in in Mn. I brought 3/4 of the fam...8 people. We ordered onion rings, fries, burgers and their famous shakes. There were two kiddos that had the Kids meals. After ordering...our food was at our table in 6 minutes...and it was all fresh and hot! I ordered the California burger with raw onions and cheese! Wow we wow this burger was so good that down to the last bite.I almost bit my fingers! My moms had the chicken sandwich grilled and my teenagers had the bacon cheeseburgers. They all reported back that the was awesome.I was right at the table to hear their oohing and ahhing! The onion rings were the real deal Holyfield made fresh no...bags here and so were the fries! They have a park for the kiddos to play and I was gonna go by without them getting bored! Peppermint twist is a place for the family! I'll be bringing my family back making this place a tradition!

Yelp
This place is only open for the summer months. The shakes are good but the rest is nothing special and too pricey for what you get. $21 for a shake, mushroom burger and onion rings......

Trez A.

Yelp
First of all, great food, the burgers were very fresh, the service is something like I've never seen before. Outside was very nice and felt like I was in a 90s movie intro.

Li A.

Yelp
The absolute best shakes ever. Love the peppermint twist!! Raspberry, peppermint, strawberry are our family favorites.

Yelp
Food is always great especially raspberry shakes. Takeout or eat on the premises. Service is good but always busy. Burgers and fries.

MIchele D.

Yelp
WOW!!!! such wall kept secret...though the throngs of people that flock there would not say so The shakes are AMAZING. ( Raspberry) the burgers are like something out of yesteryear. The fries are fresh and steak cut so ya gotta eat 'em fast and a half basket is enough for four if you have ordered burgers or do like we do often My grown son and I each get a shake and split fries and thats lunch for two I love the old eat in yer car service. Though I prefer walking up to order and getting the food delivered. You can also park by the side of the road and sit at picnic tables if you bring the kiddos and they can run around and play until the food arrives. ONLY DRAW BACK...there will be a wait...sometimes a LONG wait. SO don't go starving and expect to eat ASAP...its a little shack dishing up a lot of fresh homemade food.Go at a weird time mid week for quickest service and CASH ONLY.

Yelp
Consistently great food!! We look forward to going every year for the atmosphere, the burgers and the malts.

Yelp
Love their raspberry and their butterscotch shakes! burgers are really good too.

Yelp
The good: - Cute local place. - Good shakes (but I have had very few bad shakes in my life.) - Kids play area. - Didn't order the onion rings but they looked good. - Buns are toasted and buttery. - Decently extensive burger & sandwich menu. The bad: - Overpriced. - The "French fries" are potato wedges/jojos. - The burger patties are tiny and are overpowered by any bun and toppings. - It's a decent wait for food considering the price and food quality. End of the day- if you're there for more than a shake or to let the kids run around, it isn't worth the money or time.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way to see the World's Largest Ball of Twine ;-) Been hearing great things for years about the Peppermint Twist and it didn't disappoint. Service was quick and personable, and food came out pretty quickly even though they warn you that it might not. The burgers were awesome! The half basket of fries was more than two of us could finish, which meant we didn't really need the onion rings we ordered as well. The only glitch was that the rings were kind of bland. I also had a really good milk shake (don't skip this). One other warning, is that there a lot of bees around because of the food. Otherwise, we'd definitely stop in again when in the area.

Zoe L.

Yelp
The icecream is to die for, you can tell it's homemade. Their Peppermint shake is way better than any other one I've tried before at bigger chains! Can't wait to go back and try other things on their menu, the burgers look amazing!!

Yelp
Decided to stop here after seeing this place on the food channel some years ago. The milkshakes are top notch. But the food was somewhat of a let down. Everything was very greasy and overly buttery. I'd definitely go back for the milkshakes if I'm ever in the area, but I'd pass on the food.

Troy S.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch going through town. We were a bit disappointed, as it has pretty good reviews. Cheeseburger was great, toasted bun is a plus. Ordered fries, which were nothing special potato wedges. Guess we should have ordered the onion rings. Ordered a butterscotch shake that tasted like it was made with ice milk and not ice cream. Guess we should have ordered the raspberry shake as that got good reviews. They could use more ice cream creations on their menu. Wasn't too busy and got our food pretty fast. Would make different menu choices if we get back there.

Yelp
Peppermint Twist was on our summer bucket list. We had brought the kids there many times when they were little, they have a nice play area. This year, now that the kids are in high school, we wanted some good burgers, shakes and a drive-in experience. Peppermint Twist, a family owned establishment, delivered. The burgers are so good, messy and greasy. The shakes are hand spun and chock full of fresh fruit, one of their specialties. We left at dusk, full as ticks, windows down, and happy to have some more family time while heading back to our neck of the cities. We have recommended Peppermint Twist for many years.

Yelp
I wasn't necessarily impressed by the burger or the fries, but I had dreams about that strawberry milkshake. I know that's what they're known for is their ice cream, but I really was not expecting how good that strawberry ice cream would be. The strawberry milkshake was seriously the best strawberry milkshake I think I've ever had. And now I'm itching to go and get another one at my nearest convenience
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Friendly waitress, burgers were excellent and enjoyed the malts. We were there on Labor Day and it became busy. I heard staff explain approximate wait time before people ordered which was good. Looked like a fun place to take little kids but we didn't get out of vehicle to explore.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place ever since WCCO voted them best diner. I happened to be in Waverly and wanted to order lunch for my staff. I went there and the server couldn't be nicer. She made great recommendations and the wait was about 5 minutes for an order for 8. She packaged everything beautifully and we were good to go. The burger was awesome. The onion rings were the best i have had. Not greasy at all! I am definitely going back!

Yelp
This place is CUTE! It's in the middle of no where, but it's a great stop after the apple orchard. This place is pretty hard to miss too. The building is pink all the way around with bears painted onto it. If you don't want to do the drive-in there's a great little picnic area. If you have kids with you, there's a little playground and a small train they can sit in to eat. The onion rings are HUGE and breaded perfectly, the burgers are juicy with soft buns, and the shakes are just the right amount of thick. The service is a little slow, but it's a smaller environment so you can't expect your food out like lighting. If you're in the area, try it out!

Yelp
What a cute little drive-in/outdoor eatery. Went here on a Saturday for lunch with the BF. Got the bacon burger dog with grilled onions. So simple yet so good! BF loved his burger too. They serve steak fries, which aren't really my jam, but if you like fat potato-y fries, grab a basket. Great place to relax outside and grab a cheap meal. Neat play area for the kiddos too, if they're in tow.

Yelp
I've been coming to Peppermint Twist since I was a kid, so it has that nostalgia for me considering I live out of state. It is a cash only place, but as they say "we're not a fast food restaurant, everything is cooked to order", and it is. The food really is delicious, a tad greasy, but I like it that way. It's a wonderful place to take your kids as it's designed for kids. They have vegetarian-friendly options as well!
google avatar

Shannon A.

Yelp
This place is adorable and the food is really great. They make it fresh for you so there is a bit of a wait but never as long as they say. The shakes are extremely thick and the burgers are amazing - those buns! Very fun vibe too.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Great onion rings. Cute place fun for little kids. Great shakes. Burgers are pretty good. Food comes out quicker than you expect. Nice place to stop at if you are in the area.

Yelp
The only review you need. This is an old family business only open a few short months in the spring/summer. So WAY okay they only take cash. Credit cards cost mom and pops a LOT of money to process so don't listen to others that whine that they need to bring cash. Big boys and girls carry cash. Or know they can grab some at one of the many ATMs nearby. Seems the staff are teenagers with a close eye kept by "ma". Nice work teaching the dying art of customer service!! It is a little more expensive than a shake from Perkins? YES. Is it higher quality ice cream with fresh ingredients? YES. Is it worth it? Oh my YES. Same goes for the food. The CHICKEN BLT is crazy good. You just have to stop. Simple as that. Go for grilled food and must try a shake...or just get some plain ice cream. Taste that difference? Yeah, it's not cheap DQ ice milk! Oh, and yes...it is a little creepy. If you go at sunset, it feels like you are about to be visited by a bloodied clown or that summer camp killer...which makes this place my NUMBER ONE PICK for a car side meal!!!!
google avatar

Patti K.

Yelp
We happened to stop by on the way back home from Twine Ball Days. It's real food! Yes, the pork chop dinner at the festival would have been cheaper, but by golly, after a hot day in the sun it was a real treat to enjoy the raspberry chipotle chicken sandwich under the quiet trees. You could see the raspberries in the sauce, and the chicken breast was actual chicken breast (as opposed to "parts is parts" food). The pork tenderloin was fresh from the fryer, and also very good. Fresh vegetables in the sandwiches. And if you order a shake, keep in mind that the straw is just for decoration--you need a spoon to eat it. The peppermint twist shake had large chunks of peppermint candy (and for me that's also real food). Next time I'm in this neck of the woods, I'm definitely going back.
google avatar

Amy V.

Yelp
This place is great! They have delicious food and a great family atmosphere. The servers were very helpful and for most I assume it is their first job. They take cash only, so be prepared. They have a huge play area for kids and my grandchildren loved it! I hope to visit this place every year.
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
Prices are too expensive and they don't offer coupons OR birthday freebies/discounts. I can't afford this place. If they lowered their prices or either offered coupons or did something like a free shake on your birthday I'd rate higher.
google avatar

Heidi B.

Yelp
Stopped here today with my 2 young boys before some swimming at the local splash pad. It was definitely a fun family place! A play spot for the kids and lot of outdoor seating. I was also impressed with the speed of service, it was a hot summer day and they were really busy - our food came out in less than 10 mins. 4/5 Stars because Although they came with ice cream, I thought the kids meals were a little skimpy on food, my boys may be bigger than average kid eaters. I also thought it was a bit expensive - 2 kids meals and a burger basket with water was 27.00. We didn't partake in a malt/shake but probably would have had the meal not Been so expensive.
google avatar

J T.

Yelp
Wonderful place to stop after orchard with the kiddos - any age. Thick FILLING shakes - fresh raspberries! Hershey choc shake & peppermint shake was the BEST! Nice shaded area to sit - LOTS of pink! Clean restroom too

Karen S.

Yelp
This place is awesome!! The best burgers and a raspberry shake that is out of this world. Eat in car or take home. The best drive inn around, Mike and Vicky are very welcoming, you won't be disappointed by the food. Eat there at least twice a week.
google avatar

Ryan E.

Yelp
I would have to agree with Keith S. I ordered a raspberry malt because they were on the food network in recognition of their raspberry shakes and a malt is basically a shake with a bit of malt powder mixed in. The key word is mixed in! I was highly disappointed. It was grainy, lumpy and there was unmixed malt powder at the bottom of my cup. Unacceptable for a $5.00+ malt. Yes the prices are on the high side and I could possibly justify the price if it wasn't all grainy and lumpy. Personally, I have no problem making a smooth, lump and grit free malt by hand at home. So...when I go out and order one, I expect it to be at least that good. Especially if your on the Food Network specifically for that type of item. Really a big disappointment and haven't been back since. Perhaps someday I'll give them another go.

Yelp
I had great memories of stopping at a drive-in at this location for what were claimed to be the best hamburgers when I was younger. We would always stop here on the way to a friend's cabin and I was a fan. I returned to the drive-in more than 25 years later and it appears to have changed from what I remember. What used to be a modest drive-in restaurant in my memories had been replaced by a drive-in with a garish pink color scheme surrounded by a park. When we first arrived I had to think hard about whether my memories were flawed or if the place had changed. When we were finally ready to order, we noticed the signs saying that credit cards were not accepted. We do not carry cash normally, so we had to leave and find an ATM (fortunately not too far away at a gas station, but we had to pay a fee). When we returned, my intention was to get a hamburger, but then I noticed the breadth of the menu and my Iron Law of Hamburgers: if hamburgers are not the most prominent menu item, then don't bother because they likely are not worth the effort. Even though I had fond memories of past hamburgers at this location, I was suspicious that the cosmetic changes to the drive-in suggested that the food had changed as well. This was the line of reasoning that caused me to bow to my Iron Law of Hamburgers and select the Pork Tenderloin sandwich. I was not pleased with my choice. The pork was dry and overall the sandwich lacked flavor. I really had to work to finish the sandwich. The rest of the meals for my family members seemed to be equally uninspiring.

Yelp
The service was fast and easy. We arrived around dinnertime Sunday evening, there was a lot of cars although to be expected considering the restaurant was rated the best drive in Minnesota, we ordered 3 California supreme burgers, they looked delicious beautifully crafted and the burger was assembled great and the taste was amazing, the burger was cooked properly and the assortments were placed on the burger good, we also ordered a chocolate shake and a strawberry shake I was delighted with the fresh strawberries in the shake, the chocolate shake was good as well, the root beer was good nothing too special but good none the less. Then there were the onion rings and fries the onions were fresh and sweet, piping hot when we got them and the the fries were tasty a bit thick and not too salty, overall the experience was a great one, 20 minute wait but don't let that discourage you it was a weekend and they were packed, service was good staff was friendly and i was pleased to see the strict safety measures they were taking in these troubling times

Yelp
Peppermint twist drive-in, if you have a girl and you are trying to impress her, this is the place to go. It's expensive as shit. The food was subpar. It really depends what you get. One item on the list towers over the rest, the smoothies. When you sink you choppers on one of these it is an instant flavor blast, a one two punch to the taste buds, an eye opener to say the least. Also I was disappointed that the waitresses were not on rollerblades. Obviously this drive-in is trying to rip off a 90's movie and they would of struck home with rollerblades. This place was a definite go and see but there are areas to improve in.

Yelp
Best burgers ever, America. I have grow up with this type of food it's good ohhhplease see it very delicious everytime I eat peppermint twists my stomach was filled with joy I looked around and I saw the smiles on everybody's faces with the taste of that nice juicy burger all over my tasty

Yelp
This place is a fun place to eat. The food is good and I've loved going there since I was a child. Would love to see the prices come down a bit. If the food were better I could understand those prices but it's just to much. The ice cream and desserts are great though. I highly recommend.

Mary H.

Yelp
Ordered burger basket plus a side of onion rings.. We had our food within 10 minutes considering they we busy.. the food was good Definitely worth the road trip my girlfriend and I went on
google avatar

John Z.

Yelp
Not a fan. I know it is drive in, but the chicken sandwhich was RAW inside. The onion rings were average. I tried again, to no avail. The chicken fingers were extremely greasy and had zero flavor.

Chris M.

Yelp
I give 2 stars. As seniors, my husband & I found $26 for two greasy burgers, an order of potato wedges and one shake too pricey. Daughter w/two preschoolers gave 4 stars. $5 for kids meal, which included generous ice cream cone decorated w/sprinkles & animal cracker, was an on-target price. Well thought out, fun, fenced playground and delightful outside seating enhanced experience. As a senior I won't be back. As a grandmother, it's the place to go.

Keith S.

Yelp
They are awfully proud of their shakes here. That's all we wanted. Stop by and we got one small shake and one large malt. The total was over $12. Yeesh. I could taste the graininess of the malt powder in mine. It got worse. The bottom of it had a layer of unmixed malt powder. The decor looks like something out of an '80s horror movie. Mega creepy, which frankly, I kinda like for the sake of being creepy. But still creepy. Anyways. It's way overpriced and wasn't that great. Really not much more to say.

Tim R.

Yelp
The fresh raspberry shakes and fresh strawberry shakes are amazing! The burgers were very good. The food came out fast and hot, even though it was pretty busy and we had a big group. The service was great too. The outdoor seating in the shade is relaxing and quaint. And the secret dance floor with free jukebox is super cool. This place is a hidden gem!!!

J W.

Yelp
This place is SUPER EXPENSIVE ($4.70 for a large soda, $2.70 for a medium soda, NO REFILLS) and the food is basically greasy state fair food (reheated fried junk food). We got 3 kids meals for my grandkids and 3 appetizers (cajun fries, cheese curds & onion rings)to share and it came to $53. The food took 28 minutes to arrive while we got eaten alive by mosquitos. Bottom line, not worth the price. Service is painfully slow and you can eat in a nice restaurant for less money and get a full meal with beverage refills, rather than greasy appetizers & $5 cups of ice with a teeny bit of soda in them. NOT WORTH IT.
google avatar

Riley G.

Yelp
I always remembered coming here as a kid and boy the food is good. The onion rings are big. This place is really cool and i loved this play and I still do. Serbia is good but the wait is a bit long but worth it!
