I was having a celebratory birthday dinner in Carmel with family. I had wanted to go to Roy's, but my sister didn't care for it, and thought her daughter would prefer Peppoli's at Pebble Beach, so we went there. Both restaurants are right next to each other, with a patio and grass area that overlooks the ocean, golf course, and has a bagpiper that walks the course at sundown. Sitting outside at a table on the lawn on a particularly hot day to have a pre-dinner drink was the best part of the evening. I asked for a recommendation on the wine, as I wanted something very light, as it was so hot outside. They recommended the Nobili Sauvignon Blanc, which I'd have never chosen, but it was so delicious! It has a grapefruit undertone, and I've purchased some bottles of the same wine since. This, however, is outside of the restaurant, as you wait for your reservation time. You do want to go early, as there are beautiful views, you can drive along 17-mile drive for free, when you have a dinner reservation, and it makes for a lovely day. This part made me happy, and deserves stars. Our meal at the over-priced Peppoli does not.
We then went in for our meal. We did not have a view of the ocean from this restaurant, which is what I was originally striving for, but at least we had the enjoyable cocktails with a view just before dinner. The restaurant has an elegant vibe to it on the inside, with the heavy, straight-back chairs that you often see in steak-house restaurants. The busboy was very attentive, refilling our water, and bringing bread, and taking away dishes. Our waitress was non-existent after we placed our orders, which is disappointing when you see what you are paying at this restaurant.
The food: 3 out of 4 of us ordered the "Signature" lasagna, that they told us was their specialty. It was $37, and came with absolutely no sides, and was a fairly small serving. On top of that, it was very dry, and not very tasty. I would not order this dish anywhere again; much less when you are paying $37 for it! It is outlandish that a restaurant at Pebble Beach can serve this type of meal at exorbitant prices. Pebble Beach has an exclusive reputation. This restaurant did not live up to anywhere near it's mark. The 4th in our group ordered the vegetarian pasta, and it was so salty, she hardly ate any of it.
We tried the Tiramisu for dessert, and that was very tasty, but after hundreds of dollars on a bad meal, it's not worth coming here.
Eating meals at a restaurant that charges between $40-$100 per plate should leave you with a "Wow!" factor. This restaurant was a huge disappointment. And, the prices next door at Roy's at Spanish Bay/Pebble Beach are not any better. My best recommendation is to have a (pricey) cocktail while sitting at the lawn tables or at the firepits outside, enjoying the atmosphere, while it is still light out to see, and watch the bagpiper at sundown, that walks through the area. Skip the meals at the restaurants, unless you don't mind greatly overpaying for sub-par meals.
