The 22 Best Restaurants In Cape Town 2024

"On the top floor of an otherwise average-looking building is the Persian Peacock, a carefully guarded secret among locals. The stars of the menu are undoubtedly the lamb tah-chin (an upside-down lamb and rice casserole) and lamb kebabs that are so juicy you’ll run out of napkins before you do food. This spot is family-run and feels like scoring an invite to your friend’s house whose parents are way better cooks than yours." - bri cave

A Beautiful Culinary Experience with Heart Persian Peacock is a true gem in Cape Town. The food is absolutely beautiful—rich in flavour, beautifully presented, and clearly made with love. As a vegan, I was so happy to find plenty of options that were both satisfying and delicious. It’s not always easy to find authentic cuisine that caters thoughtfully to plant-based diets, but Persian Peacock delivers effortlessly. The location is central and easy to get to, though the surrounding area could definitely benefit from some attention—there’s a noticeable presence of homelessness, which can be confronting. That said, once you're inside Persian Peacock, it’s like stepping into a warm, welcoming oasis. The staff are kind, the vibe is lovely, and the experience feels special from start to finish. I’ll absolutely be back. Highly recommended for anyone looking for soulful, flavourful food and a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.

I visited this place on a Sunday without a reservation and was lucky to get a seat, though the steep stairs and limited seating make booking ahead essential. I ordered the mixed salad, fresh but very small, Safaron rice, and the large mixed grill, which had authentic Persian flavor but was undercooked and had to be returned multiple times. The owner was kind and offered a 10% discount for the inconvenience. Tea tasted good. I recommend they serve Iranian nan with grills free of charge, as it’s a key part of the experience. Overall: Great flavors and service, but some room for improvement in portioning and cooking consistency.

I’m so glad we decided to visit Persian Peacock for an authentic Iranian culinary experience. Every dish was fantabulous. Rich in flavour and aroma… the air permeated with saffron, rose essence and blossom … we ordered a platter and a few salads/dips and everyone shared breaking (flat) bread together. The tahdig (the moulded rice) dishes were incredible too. We were a group of 5 and it brought us all so much closer together - the harmonising power of food and a celebration of a culture and history many know little about. An absolute must if ever in Cape Town ❤️

If you’re looking for a culinary escape to Iran without leaving Cape Town, look no further than The Persian Peacock in Vredehoek. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a homely, inviting ambiance that immediately makes you feel at ease. The warm lighting, rustic decor, and comforting atmosphere make it clear that this is a place where tradition and hospitality shine. The food at The Persian Peacock is nothing short of spectacular. The flavors are rich and authentic, bringing the essence of Persian cuisine to life with every bite. I indulged in a selection of their dishes, and each one was a delightful experience. Try the mini starter which consists of a fluffy pita and yummy dips! For Mains try the meat platter with salad and veg. It’s clear that The Persian Peacock prioritizes both quality and authenticity, and the chefs’ attention to detail is evident in every plate. What truly sets this restaurant apart is the homely feel and the personal touch from the staff. There’s a warmth in the service that makes you feel like you’re dining in the home of a good friend. The owners and team are passionate about the food they serve and it shows in every interaction. Whether you’re a seasoned fan of Persian cuisine or a first-timer, The Persian Peacock offers an unforgettable experience that combines rich flavors with a welcoming atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for a casual dinner, a special occasion, or simply a night out to indulge in something truly unique. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a comforting and delicious journey into Persian food.

I’m reluctant to give such a high rating because I love this place so much. It’s a must go. The food is phenomenal. The service and ambience are very good. I make sure to eat there at least once every time I come to Cape Town.

I first went to the Peacock January 2024 with partner and family. We ordered a tahchin and the mixed platter. So well cooked, so delicious and so much meat that leftovers the next day were also enjoyed. While the chops were great, it was the tahchin with eggplant that won me over completely. Wow! With the service, the food and the fact that you have to take your own wine (a huge plus as It makes the evening more affordable and you get the wine you really want) it quickly became our fav … returning 3 times with different people and 3 times we had the tahchin but learnt to order a smaller plate of chops to share. I returned this year when I was back in the country. Just as good as the last time, so the standard of food has been maintained, which is excellent to see, and the price is still a pleasure. Oh, and those little green olives (zaytoun) are great little flavour bombs, and the sizzling hot baklava is a great experience!

One of my absolutely favorite places in CT. Such a hidden gem. Awesome interiors, friendly staff and most importantly amazing food! The co-owner was very nice and helped us choose the right dishes for our group. If you love meat, you'll love this place! The portions are hearty and so tasty. The flavours and the combinations of different ingredients were perfect. Don't skip dessert, I absolutely loved the saffron ice cream too. Loved the decor as well.
