An Eater’s Guide to Crete, Greece’s Largest Island | Eater

"A restaurant that sources many ingredients from its own farm in Hersonissos and translates them into traditional Cretan dishes like chochlioi boubouristoi, rooster burgers, and kreokakavos (an ancient pork-and-honey preparation), combining archaeological awareness of local foodways with robust, terroir-driven cooking." - Demetrios Ioannou

All around, it's an amazing experience! I love the farm-to-table concept, and that all of the food is local. It was so good I even went twice. I highly recommend the lamb over risotto, that was perfect. The second time, I tried the goat. It was also wonderful, but the vegetables were just a bit too salty for me to finish them. Granted, I do not eat separate pieces of fat and I know that takes the edge off of the salt, so the dish is probably balanced the way it is. I was also given a complimentary small welcome soup, plate of semolina halva for dessert, raki, and when I said I was nonalcoholic, a shot of lemonade instead. The soup is so good it makes you giddy when you first try it. The semolina halva is amazing, it's almost worth going just for that! The lemonade was also good. It's a welcoming atmosphere with exceptional staff so friendly you'd think you're in Japan. The food is filling, and there's no issue for safety, either. I left 30 minutes before midnight on a Tuesday and there were still four other groups seated. All of the main city center streets were still lit and bustling with people, even. Overall, it's my favorite restaurant in all of Greece and certainly worth your visit!

Absolutely amazing experience at Peskesi - we arrived early afternoon as walk ins and were asked if we could wait an hour for a table which we were happy to do! We sat in the shade and were given menus, ordered some lovely wine based on recommendations, and were also given some complimentary cheese, olives, and tomatoes. We were happy to wait and the atmosphere was super calm and tranquil. The menu was really interesting to read as it goes into detail regarding the organic ethos of the restaurant and details how far away the food for each dish travelled to make to from farm to plate. A really good range of price points too! We ordered 4 starters and 2 mains and honestly for 3 that was too much, we were stuffed but very happy! The salads were beautiful, so fresh and light. The lamb just completely fell apart and the rice was amazing, while the chicken was moist, flavoursome, and hearty. Our selection of starters were all fantastic: baked potatoes with cheese, crispy cheese rolls with fig jam, and marinated anchovies - all beautiful. The staff were fantastic (especially the LFC supporting waiter), super attentive and made our experience absolutely gorgeous. The complimentary bread and beetroot dip was delicious, as was the rose raki and sweet treat at the end. Would highly recommend while in Crete!!!

We visited this restaurant back in June, and only now are we finally writing the review — but it truly deserves it! This is such a wonderful place with a very pleasant atmosphere and absolutely delicious, authentic Cretan cuisine. The flavors were simply incredible. Our waiter recommended a local wine that turned out to be the best we tasted during our entire stay in Crete - we even searched for it everywhere afterwards to take some home. That’s how good it was! The hospitality was outstanding: we were even treated to a complimentary dessert and raki. A special thank you to our amazing waiter, Kosmos, who made the experience unforgettable. If we ever return to Crete, we will definitely come back to Heraklion just to visit this restaurant again. Highly recommended!

Great concept and delicious food. We loved both of the salads we tried, the ingredients were super fresh. They also do meat well, the sausages and lamb were very flavorful. Would happily return to sit in the beautiful garden and try more dishes

This restaurant is outstanding in every way. The staff are friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu, happy to accommodate any special requests. The food is incredible - the Dolmadakia were so tasty we couldn’t resist ordering more, and the meat dishes were excellent. The menu is clear and informative, showing the origins of each dish. We had a fantastic experience. definitely a must-visit.

Went here in September with a group of friends for lunch. We did not have a reservation, but luckily there was a table available although the place was packed with people. Everything about our meal there was superlative, significantly surpassing any expectations we had. It is not even just about the food - it is an entire experience - from the restaurant design, smelling incense in the air, being introduced to hand washing rituals with a traditional herbal concoction. I simply loved every second spent at Peskesi. The service was absolutely impecable and don't get me started about the food. It's authentic Cretan fine dining at incredibly reasonable prices. When we first saw the place, we thought to ourselves that we will never financially recover from this meal, but it was totally not the case. Everything we ate was truly special and well thought through to respect local ingredients and gastronomy. Definitely the best food we had in Crete :)

We visited Heraklion for a night and had a lovely meal, although we found some of our dishes quite salty, including the Katsohiri saganaki and the lamb with yoghurt and rice. Perhaps the salt-heavy recipe is traditional, though a lighter touch might be a welcome evolution.

Google
my airbnb recommend this place. The service is so good from the moment I walked in. I had traditional slow cooked lamb with cheese & yogurt. The meat is cooked to perfection, flavorful & tender. The bed of half cooked rice in lamb broth is irresistible, although I am a carnivore, I ate it all. They serve on the house appetizer soup, dessert & raki. The place is big with very comfortable seating. Of course all of these are reflected in the price, but the quality of the food & services speaks all.
