Where to Eat Calamari in Monterey County | Eater

"Tucked behind the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, this brewery and restaurant has gained a reputation for its award-winning craft beers and its tasty bar bites. You can try any of the beers in a flight — Peter B’s brews everything from sours to hoppy IPAs to stouts. Pair your drinks with clam chowder, Gilroy garlic fries, carnitas-topped nachos, or tempura calamari with miso aioli and a chili-lime vinaigrette. The light batter allows for a lightning-fast cook time, ensuring the squid get tender, not chewy." - Annalise Mantz

Bay Area Breweries Win Big at Great American Beer Festival | Eater SF

"I noted an update clarifying that Peter B’s actually won a bronze medal (an earlier version of the story had mistakenly reported a gold)." - Janelle Bitker

The food quality has improved since the remodel and menu revamp. The shrimp ceviche and crispy cheese curds were delicious, especially accompanied by a craft beer. The pepperoni pizza was average and a little too pricey in my opinion. The family missed the old look since it had more character compared to the new sterile look. The popcorn machine will be missed since it’s the first thing my little ones noticed was absent. Overall, better quality food, good service, but poorly executed decor.

Not so hidden, but tucked away sports bar, brew pub and family eatery. I guess it's part of the Portola Hotel. From the lobby, out the large doors to the north then left right away. Can't miss it if you've gotten this far. Newly remodeled, so less charm, but makes up for it with shiny cleanliness and sparkle which is getting harder to find. Walls of TVs and there was live music when we were there. The space probably wasn't designed for live music, but I know it's a draw for others. Front, wait and bar staff were friendly and did an excellent job serving our table. Attentive without hovering. Basic sports bar menu done with a few extras and done better than most similar eateries. We were all satisfied with burgers, sandwiches, pizza and a couple salads which we shared. The crispy n fried items weren't too heavy and the food itself was quality cuts and selections. We're not drinkers but the others in the restaurant seemed pleased. I'm sure the other reviews will chime in. We'll be back. If you're in the area for a few days I'd put it on your list when everyone in your group wants something different from each other.

Love their food and the service was outstanding. So I went back there last Friday after the reopening, their amber ale was chill and amazing. Then, I went back again on Monday and their beer was less chilled... that is why I take one star off for the review. Their nachos was great and totally loved their shrimp ceviche. Well, I am coming back this Friday and we will see the temp for my beer.

Located just outside of the Portola Hotel and Spa, and offered both indoor and outdoor dining. Loved the relaxed atmosphere and live music. Our waitress was incredibly nice, but maybe a little too comfortable. She was at our table for longer conversations than we had energy for and if we hadn’t been traveling all day, we might have felt differently about it. She even stayed to watch us try a dish then lingered for more conversation. She later placed a hand on my daughter’s back, which we recognize is a way of communication for some people, but it made my daughter uncomfortable. The restaurant had an extensive list of beers so I ordered a flight of catrina, no maiden, sakura and spice lab 4. Of the 4, I liked Sakura the most and spice lab the least. We ordered their Kobe sliders, clam chowder, California club and shrimp ceviche. The Kobe sliders weren’t spectacular, but they tasted good. Juicy and seasoned. The clam chowder looked and tasted like prepackaged soup. I guess I expected better given the area we were in. The California club was the winning dish. The bread was lightly toasted, but still soft and ingredients tasted fresh. The shrimp ceviche was”wow” and not in a good way. Overall, the dish needed seasoning and heat. The sliced radish tasted as though it was pickled in dish water. One bite and whole dish was ruined. We paid $115.87 with tip which was incredibly reasonable, but don’t think we would make a return visit.

My wife and I finally got to come back after not being here for a few years! Needless to say the place looks great! Angel was our bartender and he was awesome. The deals on their food and drinks continue to stay one step ahead off others in the area. We will always come back to Peter B's whenever we're in town! Until next time Peter B's!

Google
Nice hole in the wall type sports bar restaurant. The service was excellent, wait staff were attentive but not so overly attentive that it was a bother. One of the only places I can recall the wait staff actually waited until we didn’t have our mouth full of food to talk to us. Could have been the timing, but after 2 or 3 times checking I doubt it. I got the sly signature burger. Food was excellent, seasoned properly and it came to me cooked like I asked- burger medium rare, egg over hard no runny yolk. Actually the only establishment to cook as asked on our trip to Monterey.

Google
I dined here with my lady last night and the food was absolutely phenomenal. We were dined by Spencer and the rest of his team were very helpful as well. Spencer made sure to greet us, offer us drinks , and answer any questions we had. We had a couple of appetizers which were the eggplant and then the ahi ahi which was also mentioned by Spencer. We got Blood Orange drinks ( non-alcoholic) and they were really good and refreshing. For our entrees we got a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque and prime rib Chili with Jalapeno cornbread. All the food was very delicious, the seasonings were something I've never experienced personally. The staff were all very polite and on it. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area. We will be back again in the near future. Thank you all 🙏.

Google
We had such a wonderful experience at Peter B’s! The service was exceptional from start to finish. Marvin was especially amazing—so accommodating with the kids and incredibly understanding. The entire staff was super sweet and made us feel genuinely welcomed. The happy hour was fantastic, and the amount of food we got for the price was surprisingly generous. Everything was delicious, and the atmosphere made it easy to relax and enjoy ourselves. Overall, we had a great time here and will definitely be coming back! Highly recommend Peter B’s!

Yelp
Our server Rossi was THE best!! The place was crowded and short staffed but she was attentive, friendly and went out her way to make sure we were taken care and happy. She truly made our dining experience wonderfu!

Yelp
Bomb dot bomb with a side of holy sh** that's delicious! We've been coming here for years and we're so glad to see them back up and running again with even better dishes and recipes! Good job guys! This hungry local approves and highly recommends!! They've got take out options available as well as a dining area, bar, and outdoor seating. Staff is absolutely amazing and super personable. Go here!! And you HAVE to try their Cheese Curds.

Yelp
Limited review as I only went there for drinks shortly before closing. Place looks modern and clean. Good selection of beer. The food menu did look good, but we didn't have anything to eat. This may be a seasonal thing, but we were staying at a hotel nearby for work and could not visit this place until Thursday! It was closed MON-WED. Also, seems like most places in Monterrey close at 10pm, Peter B's not being the exception.

Yelp
I am visiting the area with my boyfriend and some friends for my birthday. We wanted to find a place to go for a group of 7 and noticed that Peter B's had a barrel room that was available by reservation. We reached out to them multiple times to try to reserve this space and it was very tedious & got redirected about 3 times to different people to make the reservation. It was 8 days out that we tried to make this reservation, so we weren't trying to do this last minute. Someone finally responded to us through email and confirmed the reservation 5 days before the reserved date. We asked what we would need to provide once we arrived the day of the reservation and no one responded at all even though it had already been confirmed. Unfortunately we had 2 people from our party cancel last minute (1 day before the reserved date), so we called the restaurant to ask if this space would still be available for us and the lady on the phone had no idea about our reservation so she asked the manager. When she got back on the phone she said that no one had confirmed a reservation for that room and that it is only reserved for larger parties, so we would not be able to dine there. This place does not take reservations for their regular dining area either, so we are just SOL and have to find another place last minute because I refuse to dine at a place that can't get it together. They clearly don't want our business with how difficult this whole situation has been, so we will go elsewhere.

Yelp
Saturday night Peter b's was a enjoyable night I had the best bartender I think his name was angel he show me All the cocktails and beers that the place offered and the menu, he was really attentive to make my drink and the food was quick and amazing.

Yelp
Food: Good soul food. Good menu, good options for veg and non veg folks. Service: Rossi was a superb host, always wearing a smile, friendly, giving great suggestions on the menu and she definitely knew how to have conversations with kids, encouraged them every time and they actually finished their plates well. Ambience: Upscale sports bar vibes, great ambience. Good seating arrangements. Cheerful and festive vibes. Restrooms: Very clean and well kept! Parking: Garage near by, no issues.

Yelp
Came here for their soft opening with family friends of the hotel manager and it was excellent! Everything we ate was delicious, with fun twists on classics that elevated the dish (like a goat cheese fritter with the strawberry salad and bacon/crab/corn clam chowder). The standouts were definitely the lobster Mac and cheese and the berry crumble tart, but you can't go wrong with any choices! The drinks were excellent too with a great selection of beer and cocktails. Marvin was a great and attentive server and Rebecca, the restaurant manager, came and talked to us for a while and was so sweet. Overall, incredible experience and a great opening! P.S. the 9-layer cake is HUGE (but oh so delicious )

Yelp
Good cheese curds, like a spiced up bite-sized mozzarella stick. The Pretzel and Sausage with cheese and mustard was a miss. The cheese sauce was flavorless and oily. The mustard was great and the pretzels were soft, but the sausage was dry and unpleasant to eat. I tried it with both dips and without, but it was beyond help.

Yelp
Just popped in to visit some friends at the bar. Wasn't too loud, though live music was going to start soon, not sure if that was overwhelming or not. We left before they started. Nice vibe. Mixture of high tables and regular tables. They had a good looking happy hour menu. Hope to come back again and try it.

John B.

Yelp
The atmosphere was good, with a strong energy for a sports bar. Food was decent, but the beer selection needs some improvement. Service was great at first them fell completely off.

Yelp
Came here on a whim to take cover from the cold and watch the game. The happy hour deals are plentiful and a great value. I had the Kobe sliders and my husband had the smashburger. Both were excellent. Aside from the food, I can't say enough about the service. Robert and Luke went above and beyond to make sure our needs were met. Such friendly service.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good service, and okay food. I would come back to sit by the fire and watch the game. Don't expect 5 star service/food. You won't get it here but that okay.

Vida T.

Yelp
Went for happy hour to watch the game and didn't disappoint! TVs everywhere. The food was quite tasty. The prices were great. And our server Angel was amazing. He took good care of us and made sure our time there was enjoyable!

Yelp
Great food, great service and a great experience! Went with my boyfriend and his mom and had Victoria as a server, she was excellent! We had been having a rough afternoon trying to find somewhere that accepted dogs, and decided to try Peter B's. They were so friendly and even had options on the menu for dogs to eat too. We got a few appetizers and were all highly satisfied. I'm still thinking about how good the fried pickles were! Highly recommend!

Miguel B.

Yelp
Angel is very attentive, great service gives great recommendations if your not from here and very knowledgeable.

Yelp
We had dinner here last night, mostly because we saw that they were dog friendly and I wanted a beer. They allow dogs inside and of course outside, if you have your furry friend with you, this is the perfect spot. Spencer, our waiter, was so awesome. He was so helpful not only with the menu but also with recommending us a breakfast place for the next morning. The place looks amazing, is clean and sleek. We sat outside on one of the round tables with a fire pit in the center, it was a vibe. I had the classic burger and my fiance had the sweet heat sausage pie. The food and the beer was great, no complaints there. The restrooms were so clean, that was a shock from a brewery. Definitely making a stop here next time we're in town.

Melissa B.

Yelp
We love Peter b's! Amazing service from our bartender, Angel! We love the belly up blonde beer!

Gregory B.

Yelp
Thank Angel for the great service! Peter B's is our go to place. Love the beer and food and their happy hours are the best!

Corey V.

Yelp
My dude Angel hooked us up with great service and impeccable advice. We asked him about poker randomly and the guy knew what he was talking about. Also colleen was working bar too. She asked us several times if we needed anything (super tentative). We never did though because angel is the MAN!

Mariann L.

Yelp
Angel is a great bar tender. We enjoyed our time throughly!!!! Will be back (: thank you!!!!!!

Jamie H.

Yelp
This food was fantastic! We got in at the perfect time - just before 4:00 on a Saturday. It was right before the crowd started trickling in. Very well-kept and the service was good too. We were pleased with our experience!
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
Plenty of TV's so you won't have to worry about missing a game. The food was tasty, drinks are even better. They had a self serve popcorn machine near the bar area that was cool! Would definitely visit here again next time. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Went to happy hour August 1st. First time back since they remodeled the place. A bit disappointed w/the chicken wings. They weren't that great. If you had the previous "wing man", these are definitely not it, (lol) it's a wet rub. U get 4 wings for $5. The ahi & cheese curds were the best thing I ate on HH. Had a couple mango ciders during HH & those were great. The layout is definitely different from previous. Can't really see the tv if you're sitting against the wall which is disappointing. Bright side is that the place looks more open & spacious.. downside is u might want to sit at the bar to get a better view of a game while grabbing a cold one!

Melanie A.

Yelp
Drinks were great, food was mediocre. The burger & fries was the only good thing we ate - everything else was just OK with very small protein portions. Kids meals are very, very small (for like a 4 year old) . Service was good and the bar itself has TVs everywhere with sound piped in. So not good for conversation, but great if you want to watch a game.

Dennis M.

Yelp
Had the burger. Yum! Reasonable pricing for us middle-classers knowing we're in tourist central, but well worth the treat! Sat at the bar and the bartenders were exactly what you'd want--friendly, fun, attentive. Great atmosphere for watching the game--even this Bears fan in enemy territory! They even converted my wife to her new favorite drink--Paper Plane. Which she then tried at another bar the next night but it didn't taste much different than a Manhattan. So we went back to Peter B's. Different bartenders. Same excellent service. (We also got to witness how they treated an adjacent young family with a couple of kids--extremely accommodating and patient.) Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Nice happy hour from 4-6pm and 9-10pm. We tried a beer flight, Gilroy garlic fries, and the bf had the Kobe sliders. Beer flight: 4/5 - we got a nice selection, it was good. Gilroy garlic fries: 2/5. Needs some work and def more garlic. Too oily and lacked a garlic flavor. Kobe sliders: 4.5/5. He would order it again. He loved chipotle aioli sauce with the grilled onions on the sliders. Server: 5/5 - Didn't catch his name. We came in late and he was so helpful with our questions. He said he wasn't old enough to drink when we asked for beer recommendations but he still made some since we asked lol. He was super friendly and kind! Great service!
google avatar

Al S.

Yelp
detroit style pepperoni pizza and calamari ciabatta sandwich were solid. very dog friendly as they allow you to bring your furry friends inside, which is truly amazing considering most restaurants enforce a service animals-only policy these days. they even offer your pup a bowl of water and some love. plenty of TVs and not a bad seat in the house to watch the game. underwent a classy remodel recently. while i miss some of the rustic charm from their longtime OG look and feel, they did a nice job opening up the space with that clean, modern aesthetic.

Arthur L P.

Yelp
We happen to show up right at happy hour and that was definitely nice. Great beer at a great price and the appetizers were delicious! The service was excellent from everyone and we had a nice conversation with Angel. He gave us tips on what to do on a Saturday night in downtown. Thanks Angel! Thank you Peter B's!
google avatar

Yelp
Came to have a drink at the bar and while we didn't order food we will come back. Very nice atmosphere or bartender Colleen was very nice and helpful. Made us feel welcomed! They have live music on Thursday. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Scot B.

Yelp
Went in to watch the World Series. It was my first time back since the remodel. The place felt cozy and the upgrades were apparent. But it really comes down to the service and quality of the food. Jasmine was so hospitable in welcoming me and seeing that I was constantly content. The hazy was tasty and the appetizers were on point. I'll be back soon.
google avatar

Eliecer O.

Yelp
While I was seated quickly, unfortunately, the service was quite slow. While the staff was friendly, the overall experience was underwhelming. The poke was just average, nothing special. Overall, it was a disappointing visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for Sunday football, and it was the perfect spot. The bar was packed, but we snagged a booth with views of multiple TVs, and they quickly put on the Packers game for us. Started with a pineapple mimosa, then a flight of their strongest beers--*dangerously* tasty. The steak was small but decent, and the garlic fries? Greasy, garlicky perfection. Service was great, and overall, it's an awesome spot for drinks, food, and footbal

Yelp
Popped in here once everyone arrived in town for my birthday trip, thinking a brewpub would have something for everybody. Bonus, we discovered we were there during happy hour, so the meal wouldn't even break the bank! We ended up getting a feast of happy hour items and... they ranged from okay to bad. Nothing really stood out as delicious and the wings were soggy and had more breading than chicken. We took our leftovers to our airbnb but ended up tossing everything. The beer was good though! And service was friendly enough and attentive. I'd suggest coming here for a beer and a chill atmosphere, but maybe skip the happy hour snacks.

Vanessa J.

Yelp
Has a wonderful experience. Service was great. Rossi made our night! She was wonderful!

Yelp
Brewpub located near our hotel, we made reservations for our party of 9 and were seated in a giant booth and was amazing. Buddy and I ordered some beer flights, the beers were solid the Donna Draper was pure thunder & I enjoyed the berry high dive. We ordered fried pickles, cheese curds and garlic fries to start, probably some of the best fried pickles I've ever had super crunchy really really good. I ordered the Calzone and the wife ordered the short rib ravioli we both finished our food despite being stuffed. Also one of our party ordered the super spicy burger and he said it wasn't remotely spicy. Good spot all the way around especially if you are staying right next door to it.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, great beer, open late and featuring live music! The bar staff was friendly and attentive; I felt very taken care of. The burger I ordered was exactly what I wanted after a long road trip.

Yelp
I came here for the happy hour drinks and snacks on two occasions, two days in a row. It was pleasing to have the same server both times too! Eddy was our server. He was funny and super nice! I came on a Friday night with my boyfriend for the late happy hour, and then again the next day in the evening on Saturday with a bigger group. I highly recommend happy hour- it's from 4PM-6PM, and 9PM-10PM everyday. The happy hour drinks were $7, which is pretty cheap for the area. The happy hour food was pretty good, and we liked how the calamari was nice and crispy. The next day for our second time, we tried a variety of the happy hour foods, and they did not disappoint. I enjoyed the sweet potato tater tots- it came with some sort of curry aioli. Super delicious and unique! There is patio seating, and a large table with a fire pit outside. They're pretty dog friendly too. Inside they have a popcorn machine where you can help yourself to snack on. Pretty clean bathrooms.

Yelp
Reluctant to return, we gave Peter B's a re-try since the hours extended into lunchtime on the weekends. I looked at their updated menu and was pleasantly surprised. They have more vegetarian options which I really appreciate! The last time our family went, which was before the remodel, we were not happy with our food at all. Once we saw the remodel online we were not too impressed. We missed the booths and comfortable seating. So, since they expanded their hours we thought we'd give them another shot since we like to ride our bikes on the bike path in the morning and then stop for lunch there. We thought we'd check it out Friday for happy hour first. On first entrance I thought it looked nice. I like the lighting. We were happy to be placed in a booth as the seats don't look too comfortable. They have a lot of tv's! You can see almost the entire restaurant from any seat. We were greeted right away from our server Rosie. She was great! I had specific dietary questions that she answered and I had a special order. I was afraid it wouldn't come out correctly like the last time I was there. To my delight, everything I ordered was perfect! My husband was very happy with his food as well. We had the veggie quesadilla, strawberry salad, carls back yard burger with a side salad. We loved the "That sour one" sour beer. Our dinner was so great we thought we'd try the dessert. We tried the berry crisp with vanilla ice cream. YUMMY! The berry crisp was warm and the ice cream went perfectly with it. We ordered the sausages with soft pretzel to go and knew that our son would love it! All in all Peter B's is back on our list for weekend lunches! This dinner was the best dinner I've ever had at Peter B's! Food is a MAJOR upgrade! Great job! Positives: EXCELLENT food! The most important IMO. Great service Lighting Able to see all the tvs Good sours Husband liked the music Lunch hours on weekends $5 Happy hour! Negatives: Didn't sit in them but the chairs don't look too comfortable. Kind of loud since it's so open Smaller portions for the price but actually really good sizable meals. I wouldn't want anything larger and they have an amazing happy hour!! Wondering if they have a kids menu placemat that kids can color and play hangman with. That was always a highlight while waited for our meal. Again, good job Peter B's. I'll be bringing work people over after work for sure!!! See you then!!

Yelp
Came for happy hour (4-6pm) on a Wednesday night. Sat outside at a firepit table. They had live music from 6-9pm; Johan Sotelo was amazing. Shout out to our server, Eddy, who was awesome. They're a family friendly restaurant; we had our toddler with us, and there were other families there as well. They have hotel parking validated, but we found street parking nearby. From the happy hour we ordered - beer, cider, pepperoni pizza, calamari, and wings. It was a lot of food, and it was all delicious. Highly recommend to check this place out when you're in Monterey.

Yelp
Seated right away at the bar. Bar tender was nice, even changed our Tv to the Trailblazer game. Good banter with the bartender to help me understand what I should eat and the portion size. The club sandwich was delicious and the onion rings were top shelf. This is a classy sports bar. Lots of TV with sports on every one of the screens. Background music was good, not too loud, was able to have a conversation without yelling. Would visit again.

Chris T.

Yelp
We've been twice in the last two weeks. There is a lot of good and a lot of bad. The good; good food and good prices. The hummus plate at $18 is a steal. Lots of hummus, bread and veggies, enough for 3-4 people. Filet Minon sandwich for $20 is a good value. I ordered it medium and they overcooked it, but just slightly. It's a thin piece of meat and you have to cook it less than you think. I would order it again, so no harm, no foul. The bad: The tv's behind the bar are too small. They had the Texas Tech/Houston game on (no one outside of Texas cares about that game) behind the bar , but not the Ohio St game. The number one team in the nation and not on a tv? Come on, it's a 'sports bar'. I asked a bartender if she could put the game on and she gave me a put-off I'll-ask-if-we-can-change-it answer. I then asked a waiter who seemed to be a can do guy. HE put the Ohio St game on. The worst part: the waiters are magicians. They can disappear like David Copperfield. Both times, our waiters were slow, inattentive and very hard to find. And neither time was the restaurant very busy. They're very polite and friendly, but not the best at customer management. The first time, the food got to us before the drinks. He also walked up to the table next to us 3 times after we sat down and never even hello! Three feet from us! Whoever manages the place has never been a waiter. The service is laughably bad. You have to train your waiters immediately. Is is really a sports bar? Meh. Not with the minimal tv screen effort. With 75" tvs so cheap these days, it's easy to install 10-20 of them if you really want to be a sports bar. But with better service it can be a nice meeting spot for good food with sports in the background. Best of luck. We're pulling for you and we'll give it another try.

Lee M.

Yelp
We are locals and would always look forward to the Nachos on the old menu. They had the best and great value for the money. Since the new opening the "new" Nachos are now smaller portion and cost more-maybe because of the new prime rib chili topping? Now costs $22 instead of $20. Taste was mediocre. Nothing else on the menu sounded appealing. The new bar area looks nice but the dining area was awful. SO noisy and felt like a college dorm cafeteria. Barely can hold a conversation with all the noise. Old set up had booths and cozy vibe. I know this is a sports bar but should have an area where you can have a meal without all the excessive noise. We did have a decent server though-very nice & professional...I'll give one star for that! Don't think we will return as there are other places with better ambiance and food choices on the Peninsula.

Luke was very attentive and welcoming! We enjoyed our beers and the happy hour food, especially the meatball slider and the wings.

Yelp
Nice place, good food and lots of TVs to watch the games. We ordered our drinks and food. Service was nice friendly and knowledgeable. They had our food on the table so quick. Multiple servers came by to check on us. The manager even came by to check on us. Great service. We were in and out with satisfied bellies!

Yelp
My wife and I were in town for our anniversary and we were having a hard time finding a place to eat with our dogs. We came across Peter B's Brewpub on yelp and thought we would give it a try. It was about 8:00 and the patio was closed but they made an exception and sat us in the patio. The service was amazing, they turned on the heater and even lit the fire ring in the middle of the table. We had calzones and they were very good. I really can't say enough about the service and the staff. One of the best experiences we've had. Thank you David and Alex for being so accommodating.

Yelp
Beer and apps hit the spot! We came post run after the Monterey half... yum! My friend ordered "the bomb" dessert and it was tasty! We'll have to come back at happy hour sometime

Yelp
Excellent service. Came here for happy hour got the draft beer and cider $7. Calamari $14 Pizza $13 Wings(would not get it again) Come on Wednesday for live music. We arrived here around 6 and left at 7 and music was still playing. Parking can be validated if you park the hotel parking.

Yelp
If you're looking for beers, go ahead, they have them. Food? I'd go elsewhere. I think the food was mediocre. It was also loud as hell in there, they could invest in some acoustic foam to reduce the noise level. If you're like us and staying at the portola with tired kids after a long drive, and you're too lazy to walk more than 50ft from the hotel, just don't get the poke bowl thing. They charge $8 for a kids fruit bowl and it's just soggy melon and some grapes. They do give you enough mac and cheese to feed multiple kids for $11.
