Where to Eat Calamari in Monterey County | Eater

"Tucked behind the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, this brewery and restaurant has gained a reputation for its award-winning craft beers and its tasty bar bites. You can try any of the beers in a flight — Peter B’s brews everything from sours to hoppy IPAs to stouts. Pair your drinks with clam chowder, Gilroy garlic fries, carnitas-topped nachos, or tempura calamari with miso aioli and a chili-lime vinaigrette. The light batter allows for a lightning-fast cook time, ensuring the squid get tender, not chewy." - Annalise Mantz

I dined here with my lady last night and the food was absolutely phenomenal. We were dined by Spencer and the rest of his team were very helpful as well. Spencer made sure to greet us, offer us drinks , and answer any questions we had. We had a couple of appetizers which were the eggplant and then the ahi ahi which was also mentioned by Spencer. We got Blood Orange drinks ( non-alcoholic) and they were really good and refreshing. For our entrees we got a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque and prime rib Chili with Jalapeno cornbread. All the food was very delicious, the seasonings were something I've never experienced personally. The staff were all very polite and on it. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area. We will be back again in the near future. Thank you all 🙏.

We came here for dinner and decided just to do a bunch of appetizers. It was all delicious, but especially the sliders. You can also sample most of the beers so you can be sure you like it before ordering more. The staff was incredibly nice and we had a great time. We will definitely be going back for actual entrees next time.

After reading a recent article describing the renovation that Peter B's underwent, I decided to give this establishment another shot after a poor experience the year prior. My previous experience was marred by awful food, so I was hopeful that the new menu would fix, or at minimum improve, that issue. I was very wrong - I ordered the sweet heat pizza and have now had to stay near a restroom for the past 36 hours. Unfortunately, I did not take a photo of said item because I did not envision myself writing a review of this establishment. The pizza appeared to be on a pre baked crust with little to no sauce and placed under a broiler or salamander very briefly. The cheese wasn't even fully melted. Most toppings fell off if you were to pick up a slice. My partner ordered a burger which was better, but still nearing bad. Soggy bottom bun while the top half of the bun was crispy? The fries were decent. The beers I've had here are actually alright. So after their $2M renovation (per magazine article) they have yet to figure out that food is important in a restaurant. It is extremely low quality and anyone visiting should highly reconsider. If you're going for a beer and a game the place is fine, otherwise eat elsewhere.

Came with with family canine member. Instant seating with Dog water bowl provided. Happy hour food was really good. Dog food was even better (according to our dog Riley) bathroom immaculate. Highly recommend.

Our service at this restaurant was great! So refreshing to finally have a server who checks in on you and has great customer service skills! Food and drinks were delicious! The restaurant was so cute and was a nice place for a night out! Definitely going to have to come back!

10.5.2023. Update: same meal as last time. All else, curds, fish tacos were great however, the "cook" was not into making a good burger. My medium ordered burger came well done and "pressed/smashed" against the grill hence, no moisture left in the patty. Who teaches "smash & kill" to their kitchen staff? The bun was nothing but stale, part of it was hard. The previous visit, they overcooked the burger but didn't get the moisture pressed out of the meat. The food is inconsistent. During this visit we were limited on time. I let the server know of the food issues, but not until after we paid out. They probably would have remedied..... ....better to get it right the first time. It' a $23 burger that is not worth the risk. Maybe they have a better "chef" on the weekend and a short order cook during the week. NOTE: The following review was earlier in 2023. We ordered cheese curds, a portola burger (upgraded to garlic fries), and fish tacos. I ordered my burger medium rare to preserve some flavor, burger came out medium well. To my surprise, the burger meat was still flavor-filled and moist. The bun to burger ratio is good because the bun is super soft, about 1/2" top and bottom, holds up and compliments the beef. Cheese curds.... ...they were so good (added ranch dressing) we ate 1/2 the plate before the photo. Huge serving and nicely breaded! The fish tacos were large and had a good amount of grilled fish topped with cabbage and a side of Mango sauce. They were good and may have benefitted with a bit of spice and salt. Lastly, I enjoyed the beer flight. A choice of 5 four ounce glasses for $14.

Tonight our server was Daniel. He was great! I tried the Salmon beet salad and loved it!! 12-31-24 update Rio was our server last night. He was great! I found the cheese curds salty for me

Google
Amazing service and food!! We got seated immediately and served pretty quick. Our server Rio did an amazing job getting us set up with some drink recommendations and having amazing customer service. The energy of the whole place is very welcoming and I would most definitely come back.

Yelp
We had dinner here last night, mostly because we saw that they were dog friendly and I wanted a beer. They allow dogs inside and of course outside, if you have your furry friend with you, this is the perfect spot. Spencer, our waiter, was so awesome. He was so helpful not only with the menu but also with recommending us a breakfast place for the next morning. The place looks amazing, is clean and sleek. We sat outside on one of the round tables with a fire pit in the center, it was a vibe. I had the classic burger and my fiance had the sweet heat sausage pie. The food and the beer was great, no complaints there. The restrooms were so clean, that was a shock from a brewery. Definitely making a stop here next time we're in town.

Yelp
Came here for their soft opening with family friends of the hotel manager and it was excellent! Everything we ate was delicious, with fun twists on classics that elevated the dish (like a goat cheese fritter with the strawberry salad and bacon/crab/corn clam chowder). The standouts were definitely the lobster Mac and cheese and the berry crumble tart, but you can't go wrong with any choices! The drinks were excellent too with a great selection of beer and cocktails. Marvin was a great and attentive server and Rebecca, the restaurant manager, came and talked to us for a while and was so sweet. Overall, incredible experience and a great opening! P.S. the 9-layer cake is HUGE (but oh so delicious )

Yelp
Luke was very attentive and welcoming! We enjoyed our beers and the happy hour food, especially the meatball slider and the wings.

Lee M.

Yelp
We are locals and would always look forward to the Nachos on the old menu. They had the best and great value for the money. Since the new opening the "new" Nachos are now smaller portion and cost more-maybe because of the new prime rib chili topping? Now costs $22 instead of $20. Taste was mediocre. Nothing else on the menu sounded appealing. The new bar area looks nice but the dining area was awful. SO noisy and felt like a college dorm cafeteria. Barely can hold a conversation with all the noise. Old set up had booths and cozy vibe. I know this is a sports bar but should have an area where you can have a meal without all the excessive noise. We did have a decent server though-very nice & professional...I'll give one star for that! Don't think we will return as there are other places with better ambiance and food choices on the Peninsula.

Yelp
Plenty of TV's so you won't have to worry about missing a game. The food was tasty, drinks are even better. They had a self serve popcorn machine near the bar area that was cool! Would definitely visit here again next time. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Nice happy hour from 4-6pm and 9-10pm. We tried a beer flight, Gilroy garlic fries, and the bf had the Kobe sliders. Beer flight: 4/5 - we got a nice selection, it was good. Gilroy garlic fries: 2/5. Needs some work and def more garlic. Too oily and lacked a garlic flavor. Kobe sliders: 4.5/5. He would order it again. He loved chipotle aioli sauce with the grilled onions on the sliders. Server: 5/5 - Didn't catch his name. We came in late and he was so helpful with our questions. He said he wasn't old enough to drink when we asked for beer recommendations but he still made some since we asked lol. He was super friendly and kind! Great service!

Yelp
Seated right away at the bar. Bar tender was nice, even changed our Tv to the Trailblazer game. Good banter with the bartender to help me understand what I should eat and the portion size. The club sandwich was delicious and the onion rings were top shelf. This is a classy sports bar. Lots of TV with sports on every one of the screens. Background music was good, not too loud, was able to have a conversation without yelling. Would visit again.

Justin ..

Yelp
If you're looking for beers, go ahead, they have them. Food? I'd go elsewhere. I think the food was mediocre. It was also loud as hell in there, they could invest in some acoustic foam to reduce the noise level. If you're like us and staying at the portola with tired kids after a long drive, and you're too lazy to walk more than 50ft from the hotel, just don't get the poke bowl thing. They charge $8 for a kids fruit bowl and it's just soggy melon and some grapes. They do give you enough mac and cheese to feed multiple kids for $11.

Yelp
Came here for Sunday football, and it was the perfect spot. The bar was packed, but we snagged a booth with views of multiple TVs, and they quickly put on the Packers game for us. Started with a pineapple mimosa, then a flight of their strongest beers--*dangerously* tasty. The steak was small but decent, and the garlic fries? Greasy, garlicky perfection. Service was great, and overall, it's an awesome spot for drinks, food, and footbal

Yelp
Popped in here once everyone arrived in town for my birthday trip, thinking a brewpub would have something for everybody. Bonus, we discovered we were there during happy hour, so the meal wouldn't even break the bank! We ended up getting a feast of happy hour items and... they ranged from okay to bad. Nothing really stood out as delicious and the wings were soggy and had more breading than chicken. We took our leftovers to our airbnb but ended up tossing everything. The beer was good though! And service was friendly enough and attentive. I'd suggest coming here for a beer and a chill atmosphere, but maybe skip the happy hour snacks.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Too much has changed from the original. I believe they remodeled after the recent addition of the brass tap in marina and they look very alike. And now the food falls into the same quality. It's loud the entire time along with bad reinventions of classics. How could you remove the aioli from the cheese curds and especially how could you take away from the Americana found in the original format. The noise was unbearable start to finish. Very sad to say I can no longer be a loyal customer and promoter of this establishment after their "remodel".

Yelp
Brewpub located near our hotel, we made reservations for our party of 9 and were seated in a giant booth and was amazing. Buddy and I ordered some beer flights, the beers were solid the Donna Draper was pure thunder & I enjoyed the berry high dive. We ordered fried pickles, cheese curds and garlic fries to start, probably some of the best fried pickles I've ever had super crunchy really really good. I ordered the Calzone and the wife ordered the short rib ravioli we both finished our food despite being stuffed. Also one of our party ordered the super spicy burger and he said it wasn't remotely spicy. Good spot all the way around especially if you are staying right next door to it.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place, good food and lots of TVs to watch the games. We ordered our drinks and food. Service was nice friendly and knowledgeable. They had our food on the table so quick. Multiple servers came by to check on us. The manager even came by to check on us. Great service. We were in and out with satisfied bellies!
google avatar

Yelp
While I was seated quickly, unfortunately, the service was quite slow. While the staff was friendly, the overall experience was underwhelming. The poke was just average, nothing special. Overall, it was a disappointing visit.

Yelp
My wife and I were in town for our anniversary and we were having a hard time finding a place to eat with our dogs. We came across Peter B's Brewpub on yelp and thought we would give it a try. It was about 8:00 and the patio was closed but they made an exception and sat us in the patio. The service was amazing, they turned on the heater and even lit the fire ring in the middle of the table. We had calzones and they were very good. I really can't say enough about the service and the staff. One of the best experiences we've had. Thank you David and Alex for being so accommodating.

Yelp
Beer and apps hit the spot! We came post run after the Monterey half... yum! My friend ordered "the bomb" dessert and it was tasty! We'll have to come back at happy hour sometime

Brock ..

Yelp
Was always a go-to and with the new look and food program, love it even more. Beer is always awesome and vibes are super chill. Very nice people and service.

Yelp
I came here for the happy hour drinks and snacks on two occasions, two days in a row. It was pleasing to have the same server both times too! Eddy was our server. He was funny and super nice! I came on a Friday night with my boyfriend for the late happy hour, and then again the next day in the evening on Saturday with a bigger group. I highly recommend happy hour- it's from 4PM-6PM, and 9PM-10PM everyday. The happy hour drinks were $7, which is pretty cheap for the area. The happy hour food was pretty good, and we liked how the calamari was nice and crispy. The next day for our second time, we tried a variety of the happy hour foods, and they did not disappoint. I enjoyed the sweet potato tater tots- it came with some sort of curry aioli. Super delicious and unique! There is patio seating, and a large table with a fire pit outside. They're pretty dog friendly too. Inside they have a popcorn machine where you can help yourself to snack on. Pretty clean bathrooms.

Jon B.

Yelp
Service was fast and the waiter very helpful and the outside music on 6/26/25 was awesome. Great Job TNT band
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Came for happy hour (4-6pm) on a Wednesday night. Sat outside at a firepit table. They had live music from 6-9pm; Johan Sotelo was amazing. Shout out to our server, Eddy, who was awesome. They're a family friendly restaurant; we had our toddler with us, and there were other families there as well. They have hotel parking validated, but we found street parking nearby. From the happy hour we ordered - beer, cider, pepperoni pizza, calamari, and wings. It was a lot of food, and it was all delicious. Highly recommend to check this place out when you're in Monterey.
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
Excellent service. Came here for happy hour got the draft beer and cider $7. Calamari $14 Pizza $13 Wings(would not get it again) Come on Wednesday for live music. We arrived here around 6 and left at 7 and music was still playing. Parking can be validated if you park the hotel parking.

Yelp
This place is much bigger on the inside than how it looks from the outside. Once inside, you are greeted with a lively sports bar with an abundance of booths. Service was prompt and friendly. Bathrooms were nice and clean. Food and beverages were mostly good. Beer flight was a 4/5. Unlike most beers where the "tasting notes" are mostly aromatic and very subtle, these were very bold. The brewers daydream was nice and light. The Monterey crush was my favorite with a fruity and strong orange flavor. First slice was very chocolatey. The sours truly live up to their name. The strawberry fields salad was great. 4.5/5. The goat cheese fritter was deliciously creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The salad was a perfect balance of tangy and sweet. The Carls backyard burger was alright. 3/5. The meat was of good quality but lacked strong flavor. Fries were nice and crispy. My wife got the wingman buffalo wings. 4/5. The wings themselves were superb and very saucy. Nice and moist on the inside while staying crispy on the outside. Incredibly flavorful but the blue cheese dressing could have been better. Recommend getting the ranch instead. Overall I would recommend this place. Will return.

Yelp
All delicious food! Being from the Midwest, prices seemed par for the course in Monterey but at least the portions were large! Service was good; waiters were friendly. We had a booth in the bar area Friday night so it was a bit loud and rowdy. Beers were all excellent too!
google avatar

Jim W.

Yelp
Peter B's has some excellent beer choices, including their Hazy IPA which was delicious, yet not too hoppy, which I really liked. You can also get "crowlers" (big cans) of beer to go if you want. The bartender was extremely friendly and even offered samples and advice on their other beer options. The food was also pretty good, with massive potions on some of the items. We got a half order of nachos for an appetizer and that was even still pretty big. They have a nice variety of food options from burgers to salmon so most people should find something they like. The interior is very cozy and the bar area has plenty of seating, including high top tables, and a solid amount of TVs for any sports game you want to watch. It's a good spot for anyone. Whether you're looking to just hang at the bar, or have a sit down dinner with family/friends away from the televisions, this place is a great option for both.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Deliscious dirty martini and ahi sandwhich on Christmas! Loved the pickled ginger and coleslaw combo on the brioche bun. Garlic fries- so satisfying (+$1.50) worth it. Service was friendly and prompt. Grateful they were open on the holiday

Jen M.

Yelp
Well. Came in to check out the new renovations. Beer is good. I'm a little bias because I think the brewer is awesome. Service is good. Bartender was attentive. Food?? Super lacking. The cheese curds lost all flavor. The wings were tender. And that's about all I can say. Tried a couple other things that are not even worth a mention. And the ambiance??? Dreadful. It lost absolutely everything that made it unique. Zero coziness. Zero warmth. My boyfriend likened it to an airport bar/cafeteria. That's about right. Although not if you are at Monterey airport. They blow this out of the water. I feel like I lost absolutely everything that brought me here. And I have been coming here for 20 years. I have had birthday Sundays here (I am a football nut). I may come back for a beer. But that's about it. Sorry Peter b's. You took a good thing and completely ruined it. There was room for improvement but you went the opposite direction. You took what was good and tried to see if you could make it bad? I will not recommend this place for anything but a good beer again. Gave it 2 stars only for the beer and the cool bartender.
google avatar

April M.

Yelp
Thank you Eddie and crew for the great service and happy ambiance. We got to sit outside next to the heater so the Fionanabear could keep warm and people watch (She seems pretty happy in her model pic featuring the Peter B's Brewpub sign) Great tap selection with a little bit of everything- I had a pretty yum stout and the calamari for happy hour and enjoyed people watching. Recommend for those of you staying at Portola Hotel & Spa. Hopefully, they'll get their dog menu back up in time for the summer :)
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Happy hour late night vibes was great! Eddy gave us some good tips on where to visit for the weekend. The food was A1 and at a great price too. The brewery was very clean and high quality, definitely recommend.
google avatar

Marisol A.

Yelp
What a great time tonight!! My friends and I are here for a work conference and today just happens to be my birthday! We chose this pub because they advertised they would have the Charger vs Jets game playing and well NFL and Fantasy Football are my jam!! We arrived at 5PM and ordered off the happy hour menu, we got cheese curds, Buffalo wings, garlic fries, calamari rings and a pizza and man oh man you really couldn't go wrong with any of the food! My favorite by far were the cheese curds! I had a High Noon and my friends had different beers and cocktails. The best part of the night was our server Eddie, he was a great host and so accommodating, he had the best attitude and just really made it a great time! I highly recommend stopping in if you're ever in town!!
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
The wings were full of breadilicious goodness. The margarita pizza ewwie gewie goodness. Good vibes good service good ambiance. 8/10 would recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, great beer, open late and featuring live music! The bar staff was friendly and attentive; I felt very taken care of. The burger I ordered was exactly what I wanted after a long road trip.
google avatar

Allistaire M.

Yelp
First of all, Robert, our server, was fantastic. The place is fun. Multiple TVs have the big game on. Free popcorn in the bar. And the best chicken wings on the Peninsula!
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
This review is long overdue but we had a great experience at Peter B's Brewpub! The food was good, top notch bar food, but the stand out was the service. We have two kids, 2 and 4, and we were welcomed and treated like family. Special shoutout to Max. Super friendly and made great recommendations, and interacted with the kids to make them feel welcomed too. Literally felt like an old friend. We also decided to go back the next day for dinner as we had such a good experience and it was right in the hotel. Another great time! Rio was also really great, and Max stopped by to say hello again, showed us pictures of his cute little kid. We'll definitely be back next time we visit Monterey! The food is good but the service is great!
google avatar

Hector R.

Yelp
Great food, great service. It had a lot of TVs and was able to catch alot of NFL games all at once. If you like craft beers, this is the place to go to.... I drink Rocky Mountain spring water AKA silver bullets, But it was dope spot nonetheless!
google avatar

Jireh H.

Yelp
How should I phrase this? If you came to eat, you're daft. If you came to drink and have fun, you're a true champ. There are some seriously wonderful brews here including the ones where they limit you to smaller sizes due to alcohol content...(and instead of alcohol, should just also say that it burns a hole in your tongue that you can't taste anything after. I respect that protocol in place as some (and a lot...) of people gauge their ability to handle alcohol like their driving capabilities - never remotely accurate. So that said...drink up but be prepared to eat food brought out that are nothing but reheats of packaged processed nonsense or a pathetic attempt on some mainstream mainstay. Better yet, eat like there is no'morrow before arriving and be spared the culinary BS. After all, their potent brews are pretty much worth the visit and the ding being...what they call food. (Calamari is the one good exception. Order it and take a swig for me!)
google avatar

Ned C.

Yelp
Just okay. We ordered cheese curds as an appetizer that were okay, but nothing beats Wisconsin White Cheddar and these didn't have that type of cheese. I had a calzone which I did enjoy. The low point was the burger my wife got. The bun was dry to the point of falling apart and the meat tasted weird, truly one of the worst burgers I ever tasted. On the bright side, they swapped the sandwich out without hesitation. Service was good, but a bit slow, especially when considering the restaurant wasn't very busy.
google avatar

Nichole G.

Yelp
This is our second time eating here when in town and the drinks, atmosphere and food was great. We had the pretzel, a burger and fish and chips. All had great flavor and cooked well. Great place that's casual without being over priced.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
Service was a bit slow but in their defense it was St. Patrick's Day on a Friday... We met up with some of my captain's friends. Great live music and cool atmosphere. I love the outdoor area with it's communal seating and heaters. Since I moved to California, it's kinda mandatory to eat some kale and tofu. I know, but that's the law. Seriously, brown rice and kale, veggie bowl with tofu added was remarkable. I feel like I've broken some east coast law. Is there a support group for this? Wonderful place and food made with love!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
We came here on Thanksgiving Day for lunch because most places were closed and this place was also dog friendly. There are lots of seating near fire pits to stay warm while sitting outside. The menu is very extensive and they have beers for all palates. I went with the fruity beer flight and my partner got his strong ales and a plate of nachos to share. The food portions are so generous here. The meat was well cooked and seasoned and there was plenty of guacamole. The beers were very tasty and they do offer growlers to go. Service was excellent and my dogs were given water bowls which was very much appreciated. Food and drinks came out quickly and we can't wait to come back again soon. Grateful that they were open on a holiday.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
We checked in to the Portola Hotel and Spa today and went to the BrewPub because we didn't feel like driving to another bar and grill to watch the college game so we ended up here. Best decision we ever made because we met the most beautiful server Kimmy. She was extremely professional, friendly, outgoing, and checked on us frequently especially on a busy night! The nachos that we ordered were fresh and delicious. I am extremely picky. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for kick back atmosphere and fresh food. Ask for Kimmy. You won't be disappointed! Her customer service was exceptional.

Yelp
I freakin' love coming to Peter B's to hangout with friends or coworkers, have a couple of drinks and chow down on some naughty bar food. You might want to avoid this place if you're trying to be healthy cus let me tell you it's temptation galore. All the good bad food you can want with beer is here and it's GOOD. After a long work week or a day you say F it, let's eat up and cheers with beer - this is the place. Their garlic fries are the garlic-iest, their macho nachos live up to their name and mmm their wings. All the greasiest goodness your heart may want is here. And I mean it in the most positive way. You'll leave befriending their staff who are just the coolest. And one of their hosts, I don't remember his name but he's the cutest older men I have ever seen and I love how he's still working and thriving! If you're into sports you can watch them here, if you're not, you'll still have a blast. There's an outdoor seating area with fire pits which is cool. They always have so many beer options. Would recommend to a friend :)

Mimi M.

Yelp
So glad my husband found this place! Service was great from beginning to end. Upon entering we were greeted with a warm smile and inviting attitude. Food was so good! Cocktails too! And the price was reasonable! The ambiance was casual, comfortable and very relaxing! Next time we are in Monterey, we will come back here for dinner, drinks and great service with a smile! Thank you Peter B's ...we'll see you next time!

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Friday night with my lady. Had a great dinner, our server Genevieve did amazing! Service and food were excellent. Can't wait to go back to enjoy some amazing prime rib and great cocktails.

Peter G.

Yelp
Food was decent. Service was slow, I mean really slow for a beer on a night with very few people. They added 20% gratuity for our 9 person group without telling us it was on the bill when they handed it over, slimy move. Daniel at Hula's gave us a head up, best server in town. Food and drinks on point at Hula's and if Daniel is your server it's a slam dunk.
google avatar

Abigail B.

Yelp
Service was great, our waiter was amazing. Unfortunately food was not. Our check was not cheap, so i was a little disappointed in the whole experience.

Kristina K.

Yelp
Popped in while attending the Monterey Italia Festival and found a new local go-to! The cheese curds were delicious! Flavorful, full of yummy, gooey cheese and paired with a chipotle aoili that was perfect! Beer was a great complement. Definitely a perfect place for happy hour. I look forward to coming back for dinner. The Portola burger looks amazing!

Yelp
Don't go when they have djs because you request songs and they ask for money they play the music. They have one guy on the fake drums and a dj playing from the internet . The place is decent with good beers

Danielle C.

Yelp
The food is great, the service was fine, and the ambiance was very chill but also quite fun. Lots of music to go with their home-brewed beer.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much, but omg, the short rib raviolis were delicious! I only wish they would give you more.
