Where to Find Fantastic French Onion Soup in Portland

"Portlanders have long loved the version of French onion soup at this Northeast Broadway European restaurant, beautifully balancing the rich and savory stock with a foundation of meticulously caramelized onions. The soup hides under a thick layer of browned cheese, paired with a few slices of bread for dunking. It’s available as a cup or a bowl." - Krista Garcia

14 Delightful Spots to Eat and Drink on Northeast Broadway

"Though Petisco is not, as the name might suggest to a hopeful Portland Lusophile, a dedicated Portuguese restaurant, it’s a delightful pan-European restaurant all the same, with a frequently rotating seasonal menu and an inviting basement dining space that receives plenty of light. The small dining room, warm staff, and nightly specials create the feel of dinner over at a friend’s. The night’s menu can pull from all parts of the continent, with an emphasis on western Mediterranean fare — the house specialty is the monthly paella night, by reservation only. Petisco serves thoughtfully curated wines, limited beer, and refreshing cocktails." - Nathan Williams

The Best Gazpacho in Portland, Oregon - Eater Portland

"Once more narrowly Portuguese, Petisco today embraces a wider swath of Mediterranean influences for its frequently updated menus. But as far as it might wander for inspiration, hot clear summer days will always be an ideal time for the Broadway restaurant’s gazpacho. Petisco prepares a hearty, chunky-style gazpacho topped with cucumber slices and served with hunks of fresh bread, giving diners plenty to bite into. The gazpacho is available as an appetizer or in a full bowl, making it a tempting light meal in itself alongside a glass of sangria on a toastier summer evening." - Nathan Williams

This quiet, tucked away, small restaurant in the Lloyd District packs a punch with its tasty and really reasonably priced menu. Went for a catch up with a friend and a hankering for French Onion soup on a rainy night. A bottle of Portuguese wine, two bowls of soup, butternut ravioli and two desserts later....we were stuffed, happy we came and only out $66. Seating is limited.

Warm, attentive service is coupled consistently good food. The beef carpaccio is always a treat. New today to the menu was a luscious salmon salad with King salmon, sliced dried apricots, apple slices, goat cheese, and a beautiful mix of greens. Sandwiches like the piquant roast beef with horseradish and the humorously named Angry Sicilian are also outstanding.

We were lucky enough to get an amazing outside table at paella night. What a wonderful experience and evening with great drinks and great food. We only wished they had introduced themselves or said a few words about their background and why they do paella night.

Until recently I worked on NE Broadway for nearly the last 5 years and have passed the place many a times and decided to stop in tonight to take myself on a solo dinner date. I am now kicking myself for sleeping on this place. What a cute, tucked away hidden gem! Sabrina was working the front of house and was an absolute sweetheart. I mentioned I was a lactose intolerant and pescatarian and she nailed it recommending the salmon salad. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the salad was fresh, and light while still hitting savory, sweet, acidic and a little nutty with the the feta. I enjoyed myself while dining alone but i’n looking forward to having a new date spot! Especially on the cute little patio while summer winds down.

Enjoyed a lovely Mother’s Day dinner at Petisco’s. We shared the Petisco platter, Petisco salad, and pesto gnocchi. Hearty, Spanish inspired flavors with a twist. We left with lots of leftovers and content bellies. Our server, Sabrina was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Google
Nice & quiet. Atmosphere was perfect. Recommended by the Bed & Breakfast I'm staying at. I had the bacon wrapped meatloaf with mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. 2 glasses of red wine. Staff was friendly. WiFi was great. I would definitely come back

This dish was wonderful. The cormbeaf was moist and I don't have teeth but I could eat it and it was a great change of pace. The place was a hole in the wall small and homey

Yelp
Searching for a destination before a night out on the town we landed at Petisco. The vibe of the restaurant is chill mixed with your neighbors backyard patio. The inside feels a little small mostly because of the low ceiling but still cute! What We Had: - Pitcher of red sangria - French onion soup - Butternut Gorgonzola ravioli - Mac and cheese with chicken Pros: - The feel of a cute neighborhood restaurant - wait staff was pleasant and easy to talk with - amazingly tasting food that immediately said "we need to come back here!" - Sangria packs a punch Cons: - Mac and cheese doesn't need chicken (user error though) Overall: Will undoubtedly come back here to try other items including what seemed like some good specials on the board.

Yelp
Owner was lovely and welcoming! I felt well-taken care of. Food: onion soup was delicious and satisfying. Mozzarella sandwich was very tasty and bread was hearty. Mac N Cheese was so homey and good.
google avatar

Yelp
Certainly the most romantic dinner spot on Broadway with all the charm of a European bistro and truly delicious food and wine.

Yelp
I didn't take pictures...but oh my! The butternut gorgonzola ravioli in browned butter was fantastic. We shared the generous Caprese salad. Atlantic Beach pie was delicious too, loved trying an old recipe, new to me. Great service and small romantic place. Can't wait to try the sandwiches.

Yelp
The French Onion soup is all you need, make sure to get the bowl not the cup, I regretted the cup my first time there. I loved the waitress.

Yelp
We love Petisco - friendly, romantic, quaint. Today, we went tried the french onion soup, angry sicilian, chicken pesto gnocchi, and chocolate ganache. First and foremost, the chocolate ganache is not picture because I was too excited to eat it. We make sure to get a slice every time we come here and it NEVER disappoints. My soup and sandwich were the perfect combination. Service is always super friendly & personable. We've been here a handful of times and have tried about half of the menu. Everything has been good or great.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun, sassy staff and great chef in a cool, casual Euro-bistro vibe. No pretense here, but very good. Love the Angry Sicilian, French Onion Soup, Pear Salad, and Atlantic Beach Pie.

Yelp
Hidden gem on the north side of NE Broadway nestled on the same block as Peet's Coffe and Footwide, I drive past this restaurant for years and then finally ventured in. Had a celebratory dinner and both my date and I loved our meals! We share the roasted beet salad that was a symphony of flavors. The sweet beets were complimented with tangy goat cheese, the crisp apples and walnuts adding more texture and crunch, and the arugula giving it a needed peppery contrast. Delicious start to our meal! It's hard for me to pass up pasta so I chose the Linguine Bolognese, which was rich in flavor with lots of meat. Linguine was cooked perfectly al dente, the only way to eat pasta imho. After sampling a bite of my date's bacon wrapped meatloaf, and sighing loudly in delight, I already know what I will order next time! It had all the flavor and memories of family dinners, comfort food of my youth. Of course it came with mashed potatoes, which were delicious. We were too full to have desert but ordered another round of wine and hung out for awhile. The restaurant has a warm, inviting, casual vibe with plenty of indoor and some outdoor seating. Staff was efficient and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. Parking is a challenge because this is a busy block; be prepared to park on a side street or up or down NE Broadway. Would love to come back for brunch on their patio and more comfort food meals in the winter months. I did see on their menu that they make a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese - so my thing - so I'll make it a point to pick one up after the gym one day.

Yelp
In one word: amazing! After a decade plus of heading to Petisco for comfort food, I have always found tasty meals that satiate my belly, while the cozy hideaway and wonderful staff satiate my spirit. For lunch the sandwich flavor combinations are unparalleled. For dinner the seasonal specials are immaculate combinations of flavors. And let's not forget the sangria! Yum! Whether a hot day on the patio or a winters day tucked next to the kitchen every meal will hit the spot.

Yelp
If I could give more stars I would! Best Mac and cheese I've ever had (we added prosciutto + pesto). We also had the French onion soup and the prosciutto sandwich (sooo yummy!). It was so so cozy in there and the server was so sweet!

Yelp
Anyone familiar with this neighborhood knows that parking can be extremely challenging, especially evenings and weekends. As a starter, we had the french onion soup, which was delicious, but tiny :( the portion was a teaser leaving all of us wanting more... much more! At our table, we ordered the salmon and the meatloaf, then shared with each other. The salmon was tender and cooked perfectly, but was too salty. It was served atop a bed of sweet potatoes and greens (yum). The meatloaf was moist and delicious. Not sure exactly what our dessert was called (?) but it was DELICIOUS!!! It tasted like a combination of pumpkin souffle and vanilla rice pudding, served in an adorable tiny little chilled mason jar. They don't have much of a drink/cocktail menu, but we did enjoy a couple of signature cocktails. They also have several local beer, wine and hard cider options.

Yelp
Really cute place. Menu is really small and it was really hard to choose dish for me. They couldn't make sandwich in lettuce wrap or Benedict with salmon. At least they replaced my potatoes with fresh fruits. I like this place is really cozy and cute. Great for casual lunch or dinner. I really want to come for dinner there to explore more :)

Yelp
April 6th 2022, I had the gnocchi and ravioli, I gotta say not only was the food AMAZING but the staff made the experience 10 times better! This place is a hidden gem and I definitely will be coming back!

Yelp
Petisco was my choice for brunch today and it was a good choice indeed!. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this place. Our food was delicious, the service was excellent and the ambience was wonderful. Petisco is a small European style bistro located on the lower level of a huge three story older house. They have been open since 2009. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed and intimate. We chose to dine on their lovely outdoor patio that is mostly covered by a giant umbrella. It was extremely pleasant. My friend ordered the marionberry French toast and I had the chanterelle mushroom hash. These were the two brunch specials of the day. Both meals were great and worth ordering again. The menu offers traditional breakfast items for brunch. Lunch centers around salads and sandwiches while dinner offers hearty plate meals. I would really enjoy seeing a few more vegetarian choices on the menu and perhaps some vegan ones as well. Just a suggestion. There is happy hour from 3-6pm Tuesday thru Saturday. Petisco serves house-made sangria, cocktails, wine, cider and beer. Roughly translated, Petisco means small bites in Portuguese. But there was nothing small about how much we enjoyed this place!

Frosti M.

Yelp
Very good food consistently. Small, romantic atmosphere. Owners Michael and Sabrina are wonderful people. They catered a recent family party of ours and we were really pleased (but not surprised) when so many guests complimented the food! We love everything on the menu.

Yelp
nice. Love it, love it, love it, love it!!!!!!! Expert level food crafting, wine pairing Go. See. Exquisite offerings, skillfully crafted food.

Yelp
I have been stopping in for lunch here and there for a few years and always enjoyed it . Last night we made it to their monthly Paella Night. This was really fun and a great experience. Not a complaint, but worth knowing, especially if you need a baby-sitter or have to be somewhere- this goes at a slow pace and will take some time.

Emily R.

Yelp
A wonderful little spot to either have a romantic dinner, a celebration, or just a good time. The staff really enjoys being there and it shows! Reasonably priced, and just delicious!
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Still love Petisco. Didn't eat out much this winter but now that summer is here in full force you can find me on Petisco's patio for brunch... lunch... and the occasional dinner.

Emmy M.

Yelp
After all the rave reviews I've read I really had high expectations for this place and finally stopped in to try it. We sat on the patio because it was warm out and kind of stuffy inside, with no people on a Friday night. The tables were tiny and had hard uncomfortable chairs. There was no ambience whatsoever. They hardly had any food or beverage choices, only two cocktail offerings, a margarita made from a mix, and something else, and only a few beer offerings, in cans. There was nothing special about the Salmon salad There was no other hearty salad offering so one friend ordered a regular salad with a scoop of chicken salad on top. ( Like a cafeteria!) Our other friend friend ordered the gnocci which came at as a flat bowl full of white goo, no garnish, nothing, looking very unappetizing. I was soooo disappointed because I was expecting a special place with an amazing menu and ambience, not a below average experience here. On the upside the staff were super fun and accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my new favorite happy hour spot. $6 sandwiches and $5 wine. Perfection. I had the prosciutto sandwich on ciabatta. It was so delicious. I will definitely be back Mia and Brandon are amazing. They greeted us immediately and the food was absolutely amazing. Sunday's are half off wine bottles all day.

Emily H.

Yelp
Petisco offers quality healthy combinations over the years I've dined here on special occasions. Tonight I had the salmon dinner served over a bed of sweet potatoes and kale with a light vinegar dressing. And their onion soup is the best. My friend and I finished by sharing the chocolate ganache. A perfect celebration for our birthdays.
google avatar

Allyson H.

Yelp
Waffling between 4 and 5, but we loved it so we're rounding up! Came here on a Friday night and it was surprisingly quiet. Got two specials, the lamb rigatoni and beef bourguignon. YUM. Both were executed well with just a touch of home-cooked feel. Like, the sauce of the lamb pasta was a bit too liquidy and the pickled fennel and arugula didn't 100% match up with the mashed potatoes and beef, but in a way that was comforting not jarring. It felt like eating at home but elevated because we definitely don't cook like this. Pricing was reasonable and the wait staff was attentive and kind! Loved coming here and the atmosphere was cozy and comforting. Would come again to try more specials or maybe dive into the regular menu!

Yelp
I am in and out of Portland for work. And one there one day out of the week that didn't rain I ventured to go explorer the Lloyd District. I only check out places close to their Trimet. So I had a nice lunch here. Small little hole in the wall with the kitchen a small section that is right next to the dining area. I had the prosciutto sandwich toasted on ciabatta with the House salad. It was absolutely perfect nice and filling and the mozzarella was delicious. I also ordered a French onion soup, which I have never had before (I know I know what kind of helper am I). As my first one I will say it was life changing. Definitely stop by if you are in need of lunch. Their pasta are looked really good but I went in right as their dinner menu started so I didn't have a chance to sample any of those.

Yelp
I've tried this place three times now because I really wanted to like it. Cute little basement cafe serving charcuterie platters and wine, yes please! But the service is so terrible. All three times I was ignored, forgotten and pretty much a nuisance to the servers. One server even took our order and then forgot it! After we asked about our food (thirty minutes later) she had to come back over and ask us what we wanted again. Dirty water glasses and questionable food quality. Such a bummer.
google avatar

Zoe x.

Yelp
First, just go and order the bread-pudding/banana foster French toast (yes, I know, none of us adults are "French toast" people). Now that you are eating the most amazing breakfast dessert, I recommend the French onion soup (very good) and migas were a solid choice (beware there is no crunch to it). 4.5 (if I had that option).
google avatar

Ruben V.

Yelp
Very surprising find, on quite a busy street. The location is on the lower level of a home turned business. It's small seating area can make it quite intimate. My husband and I have dropped by for the special and some wine on multiple occasions.
google avatar

Ileana F.

Yelp
I got the seafood risotto special and it was $14. It was a bit pricy for the amount of food I got. It was definitely tasty though. The service was not very good but she was the only one available to service about 7 tables. I tried the french onion soup because of all of the raving reviews but it was okay-it was very sweet.
google avatar

Jenna K.

Yelp
I've only been to lunch here, and both times were fantastic. Their roast beef sandwich was perfect and the butternut squash ravioli melted in my mouth. The hot toddy was perfect on a rainy winter day as was the glass of cava. It's super cozy inside and I cannot wait until the warmer weather comes so I can sit on their patio. Parking can be a monster, but that's just Broadway for ya.

M D.

Yelp
I had the pear salad and gnocchi. The salad was fresh, and the vinaigrette and the goat cheese and pecans in the salad were lovely touches. the gnocchi was good but not as great as I expected. They were overcooked, and bland. The sauce needed added salt and pepper to make it more palatable, and adding some helped the flavor. Portion sizes were appropriate; service was excellent. I had tempranillo, which was a lovely pairing with the meal.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
I stumbled across this adorable little restaurant walking down Broadway and immediately was drawn by the quaint candle lit patio of little tables. I never caught my waitresses name but she was friendly, attentive and very helpful. She suggested the salmon which was amazing! I paired it with their house red wine and enjoyed the people watching. And if you have a sweet tooth like me, try the peanut butter pie! AMAZING! I'm already planning my next visit to try the pumpkin ravioli!

Yelp
One of our favorite brunch spots!! Have been here 3 times so far and it has never disappointed us :) even took my mom here when she flew in to visit us for the weekend! This particular brunch we ordered the brunch specials (salmon Benedict, French toast with berry compote) as well as the pear salad with bleu cheese (I apologize for forgetting the name) and the corned beef hash!! We also topped it off with a grape fruit mimosa and an IPA :) best way to start the day! Apart from what we ordered, staff and service was nice and welcoming. The woman who helped us did an awesome job recommending the foods we ate and would also check up on us from now and then as we were waiting for our food and then while we were eating. We definitely recommend coming here and trying it! Also, after being here for about 3 times already, we've learned that their specials are something to always try!! Hehe
google avatar

Kodi T.

Yelp
Reasonably priced, good service, delicious food. They did not have a dairy substitute for coffee though ... so that was disappointing.

Sarah G.

Yelp
My new favorite spot! My takeout order was perfect- food was still hot when I got home and it was so good!! The staff were also very friendly and the ambiance of the restaurant was very nice
google avatar

Nooshi B.

Yelp
Cute little place located on a busy street in Portland. The menu was appealing, but not very large. Their patio area is nice to sit, people watch and enjoy a glass of wine. I ordered the prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich, which was tasty but could've used a little more prosciutto. The waitress recommended a really nice wine which I appreciated and went well with my sandwich. But for $35, I left feeling hungry. I'll go back for the nice ambience and great service, I'll just remember to try something different.

Dana W.

Yelp
Consistently good food. Gnocchi was pure comfort food in delicious creamy pesto sauce. Salad was huge.
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
On a weekend trip and staying nearby, we called Petisco for dinner take-out and are so glad we did. We ordered the Chicken Salad-Salad and the Chicken Pesto Gnocci and both were prepared perfectly - one of the best chicken salads we've had. The gnocchi was really good and the fresh bread that came with the meal was a perfect complement. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
I walked here from my hotel on a Sunday afternoon and was only one of two patrons. The place is small but cozy, and the service was pretty quick. I had to try the french onion soup, which I am very picky about, and I was not disappointed. It isn't thick like I like my french onion, but the flavors were wonderful. Best I've had in a while. I also got the tuna melt, which was tasty. I don't think I'm well versed on tuna melts, as I didnt realize it was tuna SALAD on a sandwich, not just tuna...Still good, though! Good mimosa, plenty of food. I would come here any day for that soup, though. It's also right down the street from a great frozen yogurt place, so make sure to save room!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Seafood Paella is to die for! Went as a group of 7 and they made us feel like right at home. Family-style monthly paella night is so much fun, definitely recommend to anyone looking for a warm atmosphere, great hosts, and excellent food!

Courtney P.

Yelp
Thank you Michael for the delish Pear Salad, Mac and Cheese, and Atlantic Beach Pie! My favorite mac, with sauce exploding in the noodles with every bite. The lemon and saltine crust in the pie pair perfectly together, as well So glad to see a local business staying in tact through these hard times, obviously that means there are many great things about Petisco. Can't wait until next time, and time and time again!
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Great staff! Owner, Michael, super cool! Food is just really good! French onion soup, tuna melt, beet salad are all "go to's" for us! Desserts are good too! I didn't give them 5 stars b:c you can only get Pinot Noir by the bottle...I need a glass!!! Otherwise perfect!
google avatar

Alia L.

Yelp
Disappointing. I originally ordered the Niçoise salad from here, because as an international traveller and a Frenchwoman myself I enjoy Niçoise salads from time to time and often like to taste offerings from other parts of the world. Never again. The tuna is mixed with mayonnaise, there are pickles and a terribly oily and bitter vinaigrette that would not leave my mouth after several mouthfuls of wine. The pickle juice also soaked into the bread offered alongside the salad and into what I assumed were green beans. I have also sampled the French onion soup from here but I can only hope that it is better in person and not delivered; awfully salty with unmelted cheese. The one thing that this establishment does right is their pan-fried salmon, but I'm not sure that I want to continue patronising this restaurant when everything else is so lacklustre.
google avatar

Angelo B.

Yelp
What great place to eat. I had the Pork Sausage and Porcini with Gnocchi $13 for lunch and the Atlantic Beach Pie $6 for dessert. The staff was friendly and food was served fast. I will eat a Petisco again!
google avatar

Gabriel K.

Yelp
One of our favorite local spots. Located just down the road from us, this was the first spot we went to support with new take-out option when COVID shut everything down. Great staff, very reasonable prices, and exceptional quality. I try to get something different every time and it's always great.
google avatar

Captain C.

Yelp
1 of the best brunches in town! Total fan of this place. Low key.
google avatar

Yelp
Well this was a slam dunk. We had the gazpacho, and the fig, goat cheese prosciutto special--DYING OF DELIGHT. And the service was impeccable! Easiest five stars ever.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a favorite with delicious fresh northwest fare with a Spanish twist. Paella is amazing however be sure to reserve your spot early!
google avatar

Virlie B.

Yelp
Great brunch place if you plan to eat outside and not wait for a couple of hours for a table. Our server was super cool and she has the most genuine smile I have ever seen. She's one of those people that seriously deserves to be tipped at least %20 per table. The quality of the food and the price balances out. Had the eggs Benedict. Not a fan, but there are a LOT of other breakfast things to choose from. Will definitely come here again and try their other offerings in the menu, and I highly recommend them.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here for dinner. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was great. I had radiatore for the first time, which was delicious. Beer was cold. Good bread. Reasonable prices.

Yelp
After a hard afternoon of helping my brother and his girlfriend move to their new place, we needed food. I hadn't been in the Irvington neighborhood in quite some time, so I forgot what was around. I was thinking sandwiches and nothing hot, just because there was enough heat on a Sunday in July that no more was really necessary. A quick Yelp search and I found Petisco, and lo and behold my brother had a review and they had been here a few times prior. Off we went. The sandwiches are the thing to go with. The menu is is eclectic European and the sandwiches heavy on Italian. I saw the Angry Sicilian and I didn't look any further. Prosciutto, salami, sopressata, cappicolla, parmesan, red peppers, Balsamic and EVOO. All on fresh bread. We had the option of hot or cold and yes, cold was the way to go. The AS was a beautiful mix of salty meats and wonderfully tangy Balsamic vinegar with the roasted red peppers adding a mild accent. It was a perfect size and the side salad that was mixed greens and tossed in a vinaigrette went well with it. Add a couple of beers, Legunitas Lil' Sumpin' and it was a meal worth the going up and down stairs for way too many times. They also had a strawberry apple crisp with homemade vanilla ice cream that we all shared for dessert. The plate was dressed with powdered sugar and caramel. Excellent. Our server was good and the shade was appreciated. Overall I'd go back just to try more of those sandwiches. I also believe there's a sandwich happy hour? That's AWESOME! I will be back there soon. Enjoy!
