Supermodel Tyra Banks Brings D.C. a Haute Scoop Summer | Eater DC

"Located on the lower level of Petit Monde at 2653 Connecticut Avenue NW, the Smize & Dream pop-up (open July 19–September 20) offers in-house ice cream after rebranding away from its original frozen custard recipe; it opens with 10 core flavors plus a rotating experimental flavor and a weekly truffle “Smize Surprize” hidden at the bottom of every cup or cone — sprinkle-covered truffles stuffed with cookie dough, jelly filling, cake, or cream. I liked the local nod of the Cap Hill Crunch (Cap’n Crunch–infused ice cream with toffee crunch and cereal-soaked French toast pieces), and past playful creations include “Butter Pecan, But Betta,” “Purple Cookie Mon-Star & Me,” and the Lionel Richie–approved “All Night Love” (vanilla ice cream, caramel, and chocolate-covered fudge hearts). The Woodley Park setup provides a few counter-service seats and an outdoor patio, situated to attract young families and Smithsonian Zoo visitors; Tyra Banks will be on-site for opening day and makes sporadic scooping appearances during the residency, with the first 202 guests on opening day receiving a free scoop and Smize Surprize. The pop-up also serves as a launchpad for broader plans — a potential permanent D.C. location, international expansion, and a nonprofit learning center to teach underserved D.C. youth about “science and selling” in the ice cream industry." - Tierney Plumb

Google
Probably one of the best chai lattees Ive ever had. Perfectly sweetened and balanced with the chai spices. Went here to join some classmates to study together. It was quiet and amenable for a study group. Also lots of food and beverage options. Very cute little cafe. I look forward to going again.

Google
very cozy and quaint Café. Lots to choose from. something for everyone. everyone at my table was satisfied and no less. The bread on the Italian was really good. I couldn’t complain. The peach Matcha was the standout. It was really good. The syrup wasn’t like a syrup that a lot of coffee shops would use. it was rich, sweet and unlike anything I could’ve made myself. The service was nice and it was pretty fast and I didn’t feel rushed so I would absolutely come back.

Google
Hidden gem in plain sight. Not sure how I missed this place all these years (aside from living on the wrong side of Rock Creek). Good food & coffee at a good price. Great, friendly staff. Relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating — outside, inside, & upstairs. A new go to for a casual respite from the rest of life.

Google
My husband and I visited this cafe for breakfast and very much enjoyed our meals. It's a really nicely decorated space - all the design elements cohere together beautifully and the food doesn't disappoint. I had a lox bagel and a honey lavender latte and they were both perfect. My husband couldn't stop raving about how good their iced coffee is - I don't typically like coffee and I thought it was good too, not bitter as I normally find it. I wanna try the affogato next time :3

Google
Came here for the first time after visiting the DC zoo. It’s a huge cafe with 2 floors and great service. Coffee was amazing along with the food, which came out quickly. Cutest family owned cafe, will be coming back.

Jonathan R.

Google
The atmosphere is great. Music is set to a nice level, you can hold a conversation well. The decorations are nice. The staff is very attentive to customers. The food is full of great flavor. I will be returning to try other items on the menu.

Google
My husband and I ate here for lunch. The Goat cheese pizza was super good. Unfortunately I didn’t really like the lavender latte but this was a me problem not the way they made it.

Google
Popped in with the wifey enjoying a weekend Trip into DC when we stumbled into this cozy little slice of heaven the food was amazing and you really get your money's worth. The atmosphere here is chill and relaxing with Lofi music playing in the background. The staff here are patient and sweet and helpful to those from out of town. This is a must stop for us every time we visit DC and I recommend everyone to pop in and see this place for themselves.

Yelp
lovedddddd this place, great menu options and everything we got was delicious and a great size. super awesome seating options upstairs, downstairs, and outside. is super nice and clean but still feels small and family oriented. love this place would 100% come back!!

Yelp
This was just a yucky iced americano. There was about 1/8 of a cup of ice that melted immediately and it was extremely diluted, making it very milky/watered down with no taste of espresso. It tasted like when I make an iced coffee and take too long to finish it so the ice has melted down. Also, the price was different from what was on the prices board, and more expensive than just what the tax would add on. It did look very cute in there and would probably be a lovely place to sit and hang. No gluten free bread options.
google avatar

Sam O.

Yelp
Pretty good. I had the mint pecan ice cream which was a weird combo but tasted pretty good. Also, the cone was different from any other cone I've had ever. Interior and plenty of outside seating.
google avatar

Leira S.

Yelp
The ambiance in this cafe has such cute roots of historical origins with the varying interior design. There is soooo much room to work, chat with friends, or order an entire spread for yourself. I ordered the Creamy Lotus Biscoff Latte: which wasn't too special for me other than a regular latte with a couple pumps of syrup. I was hoping to get a latte similar to what the picture showed, but I was slightly disappointed. Waiting also took nearly 10 minutes for just 3 drinks and 1 being water.
google avatar

Laya M.

Yelp
Delicious strawberry oatmilk latte, I feel like sometimes the coffee flavor drowns out any fruity notes but definitely got the perfect amount of strawberry
google avatar

Ricardo W.

Yelp
Love their food. Always great service & pretty fast, as I'm usually illegally parked on Connecticut ave & need to run in/out. Ambiance inside is always nice, its usually quiet in the morning time when I go
google avatar

Chris Y.

Yelp
The cafe has a nice quaint vibe, but it definitely gets loud upstairs. I didn't get to try the food, but it did look good. I had their Nutella latte, but I was disappointed as it tasted nothing like Nutella. I would go back again to try the other items they offer as my experience was limited.

Yelp
This place was very average ti us. We went for breakfast. I'm a big matcha person. I will somewhat get it sweet and sometimes unsweetened. They only offered it sweetened and it is VERY sweet. Too much for my liking. We also got a breakfast sandwich. Didn't have much flavor. And we wait probably 15-20 min when there were less than 10 other guests in the restaurant. Very nice staff. Just not a place I'd recommend unless you want something close. They do have indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Dropped in for a late lunch. "Petit Monde" is unique in Woodley Park. It is a three story old house. So, the Bistro offers different seating options for guests: dining area, outdoor, lounges, tables & chairs. The service is excellent and the staff are friendly. It also offers a diverse menu with sandwiches, entrees, vegetarian dishes. A DELIGHTFUL place to relax and hold a meeting.

Diana Joy R.

Yelp
Such a cute cafe! Very homey and instagramable. The staffs are all welcoming! It's so nice to know, they offer several food and drink selections! Will definitely go back here!
google avatar

Ruben M.

Yelp
Petit Monde has the best sandwiches in Woodley Park. Their personal is friendly, and the place is quiet and cozy enough if you want to have a great meal, and read or work at the same time. Kudos to their burgers and pizzas as well. Highly recommended if you like intimate, silent, and cozy restaurants.

Yelp
I think this is a wonderful and casual, home-like place to get breakfast or brunch before heading to the zoo! I love how it's located right across the metro station. I ordered some waffles with scrambled eggs and bacon and thought that the waffles were really soft, bacon was super crunchy/crispy and the scrambled eggs were yummy as well! The service was nice and we didn't have to wait that long for our food to come out. I would totally visit again and next time I wish I could try out their coffee drinks or desserts!

David K.

Yelp
Great food, reasonably priced. The Egg and Avocado sandwich is an exceptional value. All the sandwiches are nicely prepared and generously portioned. The staff is welcoming and we are always graciously welcomed by Lanzar. The dining areas are very comfortable and relaxing. Make it a point to give it a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Food & coffee were delicious & atmosphere was so nice & cozy! Team took great care of us.

Kayla S.

Yelp
only got the matcha- would not recommend. paid 6.59 for a 16oz strawberry matcha latte. the matcha itself was incredibly sweet. idk what the strawberry part was but it was incredibly thick. i didnt grab a straw and it would not mix in just by swirling, so i ended up drinking just the matcha and leaving the rest (see photo). super sweet as well. not good i would not go again, but it was drinkable. friend got a peach matcha latte which she could not finish. she thinks its because she got almond milk though, so take as you will.

Yelp
Double chocolate muffin, and coffee. Delicious! Bright atmosphere. Kid friendly. Makes any gloomy day better

Yelp
Drinks = fantastic (one of the best Thai teas I've had) Food = fantastic Wait time = horrible We literally waiting 45 minutes for our food to come out....and even then, only half the food came out. My parents were close to finished eating by the time everything else came out. Bad planning on their end. I'm not sure what takes their food so long. The burger is what I figured would take the longest and it was first. The sandwiches are what took almost an hour. I would understand if they were busy, but we were the only ones in their downstairs dining room. They were fantastic once we got them but I was starving by the time it came it. It was pretty ridiculous. They also are a bakery and had no oven to make pizza? That was odd. I did come here for the pizza but that was fine. They were also out of boba. They don't seem to stay on top of inventory. They had great reviews and I wanted something deli like and somewhat quick, this definitely isn't that. It's an adorable old building with great seating, but don't come here unless you don't have any other plans.

Yelp
Food is not bad, yet very basic... approaching diner food. Yet priced as cafe fare. OJ in a bottle and proportioned ketchup in plastic cups... nothing special.
google avatar

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
Went in for coffee and breakfast Completely disorganized, and ridiculously slow Waiting for coffee 20 minutes and 30 minutes for food Just not compatible with a successful business for average food and coffee

Mykerah C.

Yelp
They have the best customer service. As soon as you walk in they greet you and you won't have a long wait for whatever it is that you purchase. The smoothies are thick and they fill you up. The hot tea is very good with different flavors when it's cold out. They have good grilled chicken caesar salads and the atmosphere is great ! Its very nice and clean. You can get your food to go or hang out and bit and network. It is a lot of different spaces for you choose from or if you want a breeze they have an outside area. I go there 3x a week. I recommend !

Yelp
We were looking for a brunch spot near the zoo, so this place fit our needs perfectly! There were a variety of good choices - I selected the Waffle Platter. Whenever I hear "platter" I get a little concerned that the portion size might be overwhelming, but this was perfect. Both the eggs and the waffle were light and fluffy and the sausage was quite tasty. My wife had the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Croissant and said it was yummy! It looked like they had a bunch of tasty bake goods - I's like to try those another time!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very cute little Cafe in the woodley park neighborhood! It is so inviting when you walk in. They have lots of delicious and very tempting pastries (cookies, cakes, muffins, etc.) and they even have gelato! Their food and coffee drinks are delicious as well. There's plenty of space inside to sit and have your meal or your coffee if you're not in a rush. There's also some small tables outside as well. The staff are always so friendly! I'd definitely recommend stopping in if you're in the area.

Yelp
Strong and smooth coffee in an elegant restaurant. Showed up at 930, opened at 10 on Sunday, but staff let us in and served us with a smile. Great food! Loved the vanilla French toast with fruit. Smoked salmon on an open faced roll was also good. Downstairs has a different menu and ambiance. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Cute little cafe/coffee shop. Not sure they were quite set up for a party of 6 needing lunch. But they make nice sandwiches and salads. I had the pesto chicken sandwich, which is served on a hearty baguette. Made for a terrific lunch. There is seating outside, first floor and more seating upstairs if you need a bit of privacy.

Tully F.

Yelp
A very cute cafe that we went into during our run. The barista was very friendly, the coffee and sandwiches were amazing, and the vibes were very peaceful. I definitely will back! Close to zoo and other fun spots!
google avatar

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited Petit Monde for breakfast last week. We had the most helpful service. The staff recommended the chai latte and I have to say it is one of my top 5 ever favorite chais. The best food item that we had was definitely the Philly cheesesteak. I thought it was so fun that they had lots of baked treats for purchase for patrons to bring home as well. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating making this the ideal restaurant to grab breakfast at before the zoo or study at in Woodley Park.
google avatar

Jannet C.

Yelp
We stood by here walking back to our car from the zoo. This is a very cute place with some great choices of pizza, sandwiches, salads, wines, coffee, and desserts. We got a pizza with half pepperoni and half mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese. It was fresh and delicious. The service is fast, friendly and helpful. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. All in all a nice very nice lunch!
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
I'm a self-declared regular here :) 10/10 across the board. Good is always good. They have such a variety. Drinks are always good too. I haven't tried any alcoholic drinks but one day I will try. My go to is always a mocha or Americano. The vibes and space is really nice too. Great for a medium size group, for working, studying, reading, etc. And last but not least the STAFF is wonderful. So friendly and nice.

Mischa J.

Yelp
This is a very lovely and inviting cafe with lovely decor, good vibes, nice staff, and is very comfortable. I only ordered a cappuccino, but it was a great cappuccino!
google avatar

Zachary S.

Yelp
This place was amazing!! And the staff were so friendly. Everyone loved the pizza and chicken pesto sandwich! With the most delicious Coffee Almond Fudge ice cream to polish off the meal. It's also the perfect spot to relax. Comfortable velvet chairs for days

Ashley P.

Yelp
Nice, cozy and quiet place to grab a bite/coffee and relax. Plenty of seating. Love stopping here on my way to the metro.
google avatar

Leah N.

Yelp
Very cute spot with lots of places to sit inside and a few tables outside. Good place to grab coffee, a bite with a friend, or nab a table to do work at. Loved the peach black tea! Sandwich was a bit expensive for what you got, and I thought the salad was overdressed. Would be willing to try another time, though, to see if it was just an off day. Breakfast dishes looked really good as did the pastries on display. Service was quick and friendly.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Very cute spot and not busy at all (for now, as it's a very new place, so reservations are not really necessary). Service was absolutely wonderful and friendly. I enjoyed my fig jam & prosciutto waffle, although there was a bit too much fig jam, so I scraped some off. The waffle was warm and nicely crispy yet also soft. Matcha latte (with almond milk) was excellent; it was also quite sweet, which I know some people may not like (but I enjoyed it a lot myself). My friends enjoyed their vanilla French toast (veryyyy decadent and rich!) and eggs benedict.
google avatar

La'Trevia H.

Yelp
*visiting from Houston* Such a cute place! I walked from my hotel (Hilton-Washington), it was a pretty good walking distance but I didn't mind because it was a beautiful yet warm day LOL. I ordered a vanilla iced latte and the waffles platter. The platter came with eggs and bacon. I ate outside. No bad thoughts from me about this place, super cute and quaint place.
google avatar

Todd C.

Yelp
This place is definitely passible, but three stars is what we have here. It is not table service but order at the counter. My avocado toast was quite good, the chicken and waffles just average, and the tuna salad not so much. I'm always disappointed when the syrup is not true maple syrup but some kind of high fructose corn syrup.
google avatar

Ron P.

Yelp
We found this spot on google during our trip to DC; it was in a great location and was easy to make a reservation. The service was amazing with very kind staff and the food was excellent as well. They provide complimentary chips and queso while you're waiting for your food which was awesome. They refilled our bottomless mimosas so quickly. My girlfriend ordered an iced latte too and she loved it. The seating on the outside patio was beautifully decorated! We will definitely be returning when we are back in DC!
google avatar

Adriana V.

Yelp
This review is for the Cafe! I loved it, so happy to have a local coffee shop in the area. I had a great berry smoothie and the pastry options were incredible. I can't wait to try their gelato in a waffle cone. The lady that took my order this morning was so sweet and recommended other things I'll be sure to try soon.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I live in the area and stumbled upon this new cafe. At first, it was a bit confusing since there was a relatively large menu and it was a bit unclear what their specialties were. However, the lady who worked at the front of the shop (I think she's the owner) greeted us warmly and asked if we'd like to try some of her gelato. We were surprised and delighted to find that there were 3 vegan flavors (my boyfriend is allergic to dairy and I'm sensitive) -- caramel, coconut, and dark chocolate. They were very generous about letting us try the flavors, which were truly delicious. The texture they were able to achieve with vegan ingredients was superb. They also had coconut flavor, which usually isn't sold in many supermarkets. We got a large cup (which they allow you to add up to 3 flavors) and will definitely be back for more. Glad we were able to find this spot but the neighborhood! Can't wait to try the sandwiches and the other dishes they have to offer. Overall, recommend the vegan gelato and the people who work there are beyond sweet. They've just been open for one week, so that's exciting too.

Yelp
It was so good, the food was amazing and I love how you could get your own water. The place was a small cozy place but the atmosphere was amazing. The food came out very fast and the staff were very nice! When I come back to D.C I will definitely go there again!
google avatar

Carmi A.

Yelp
Nice petit Cafe. Coffee was good. Nicely decorated exterior with outside seating available also. Good value breakfast

Taras M.

Yelp
Very good place. Chantale was very nice and provided exceptionally good crevice. Give her a raze, she deserves it:)
google avatar

Madison B.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my mocha at Petit Mond! This cute little cafe in Woodley Park offered excellent flavor and excellent service. The employee working the register was overwhelmingly friendly and had a contagiously positive personality. I am excited to return for another coffee (and food) soon!
google avatar

Rajit S.

Yelp
Staff is nice, but they always get our orders wrong. Food is pretty good, but overpriced. Drinks used to be really good, but now they're very watered down.
google avatar

Blake C.

Yelp
I went there for lunch. I had the chicken pesto sandwich and the Caesar salad. Both were amazing! The sandwich had a fantastic flavor and came on a top quality baguette. The salad was delicious with great dressing and super crunchy homemade croutons. Also, a shout out because they were short staffed, but the food came out quickly. I'll definitely be back!

W R.

Yelp
Very cute place, a converted house. Close to the metro station. Food and coffee were not great. quiche was bad, crust soggy and filling flavorless. They don't serve coffee in real cups. Coffee was also burnt. Only good item was the d chicken salad sandwich- flavorful salad on crusty bread. Didn't live up to expectations.

Francine C.

Yelp
I came here today after our appointment, and let me tell you best meal ever. The employees are very friendly and welcoming, the food was soooo good and delicious, also the matcha frappe was so good the guy there made it so good and just how I like it. I would come here again!!

A J.

Yelp
This place has gone completely downhill. I live in the neighborhood and used to love it, but they now are completely short staffed, close early, and have shortened their weekend hours. One time I came in and even thought they were open, the one waiter said they weren't serving anymore food or drinks because they were so backed up. Either get it together or sell it to someone who can properly run a neighborhood cafe!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
My group and I had the breakfast burrito, egg sandwich, and a honey lavender seasonal latte. Everything was amazing! Such a cute spot that I'll be sure to visit again next time I'm in DC. Prices are good for the amount you get and my group enjoyed everything we had!
google avatar

William F.

Yelp
OK food. Partial service at tables. Smoothies were very good. Expensive. Nice place to relax in a holiday, if you don't mind overpaying.
