"Located on the lower level of Petit Monde at 2653 Connecticut Avenue NW, the Smize & Dream pop-up (open July 19–September 20) offers in-house ice cream after rebranding away from its original frozen custard recipe; it opens with 10 core flavors plus a rotating experimental flavor and a weekly truffle “Smize Surprize” hidden at the bottom of every cup or cone — sprinkle-covered truffles stuffed with cookie dough, jelly filling, cake, or cream. I liked the local nod of the Cap Hill Crunch (Cap’n Crunch–infused ice cream with toffee crunch and cereal-soaked French toast pieces), and past playful creations include “Butter Pecan, But Betta,” “Purple Cookie Mon-Star & Me,” and the Lionel Richie–approved “All Night Love” (vanilla ice cream, caramel, and chocolate-covered fudge hearts). The Woodley Park setup provides a few counter-service seats and an outdoor patio, situated to attract young families and Smithsonian Zoo visitors; Tyra Banks will be on-site for opening day and makes sporadic scooping appearances during the residency, with the first 202 guests on opening day receiving a free scoop and Smize Surprize. The pop-up also serves as a launchpad for broader plans — a potential permanent D.C. location, international expansion, and a nonprofit learning center to teach underserved D.C. youth about “science and selling” in the ice cream industry." - Tierney Plumb
