Peyto Lake Viewpoint is an absolute must-see! The view from the top is breathtaking — one of the most iconic in the Canadian Rockies.
The hike to the viewpoint takes about 30 minutes, and while it’s mostly manageable, there are some steep sections that can be challenging, especially if the trail is icy.
We visited when conditions were a bit slippery, so good footwear and a bit of caution are definitely needed.
The lake itself, with its bright turquoise color (once thawed), and the wolf-head shape from above, is something you really have to see in person to fully appreciate. Even with some snow still on the ground, the views were unforgettable.
There’s plenty of parking available, which makes access easy. However, the washroom facilities could be better — they’re basic and not very clean, so plan accordingly.
Despite the uphill trail and icy patches, the effort is totally worth it. The views at the top are simply amazing, and it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into maintaining this beautiful spot. I’d definitely recommend this stop if you’re traveling along the Icefields Parkway — it’s a highlight of the trip!
