Prior to coming to Pharos, I had never exercised consistently. I’d take a yoga class here, attempt a run there, but I had never stuck with anything movement-wise in my adult life. I often described myself as a brain that just happened to have a body—and, perhaps unsurprisingly, would regularly injure myself through careless movement. Last year, after entering my mid-30s and transitioning from a very active job to a desk job, I knew I needed to find some form of physical activity to bring into my life and help with the aging process.
I started taking LAUNCH through ClassPass, where I met Dan. Dan is funny, approachable, and takes his coaching seriously in a way that made me immediately feel safe trying things I had never done before—like lifting weights and, frankly, anything else people do in the gym. After learning I was a beginner (and at least slightly neurotic), Dan took special care to make sure my form was correct so I wouldn’t hurt myself. More importantly, he made sure I knew I wasn’t going to hurt myself, which helped me build confidence in this completely new terrain.
About six months in, my friend and I started doing personal training with Dan, and it’s one of the best things I’ve done for myself in my adult life. My friend and I are at very different experience levels, but Dan seamlessly trains both of us and gives each of us the individualized attention we need. I’m the strongest I’ve ever been and finally feel like I understand the mechanics of my body. Dan’s helped me find modifications that let me build strength while managing joint instability. Pain I had accepted as “just how my body is” has disappeared.
Dan is funny, patient, kind, encouraging, and helps me manage my own perceptions of my physical limitations. He’s made learning so many new things accessible and fun—and he helps me laugh at myself when I get frustrated or think I might legitimately vomit (which, for the record, has never actually happened).
I’ll be forever grateful to Dan and Pharos for welcoming me into a world I never thought I’d feel at home in—and for helping me feel more at home in my own body, and value it in a whole new way.
