Ok so, one of my family members recently got on a soup dumpling kick. We get the ones from Trader Joe's so, of course, they aren't really traditional - but they are still quite good. Anyway, he's wanted to try an actual soup dumpling / dimsum type place for a while. It's been FOREVER since I've had dimsum so while we were heading out to do some errands today, he tried to find a soup dumpling place but came up short. I looked and found Phat Phat in Schaumburg. Had mostly great reviews with a few 1 stars (everyone gets those, so I figure let's give it a shot).
YA'LL... WHAT IS THIS PLACE (LOL)?! To say we were blown away would be an understatement. The service was PHENOMENAL. Our entire waitstaff was just amazing, especially our primary server. She was just - yeah - incredible! We ordered a TON of things. I didn't take photos of everything, but happy to give a quick rundown:
From the Indonesian Side -
- Javanese Satay: Absolutely incredible. The sauce with the candle nut was out of this world. Spicy, tender, delicious. Massively recommended.
- Banana Spring Rolls (dessert): Wonderful! Not too sweet, served with a thinner style chocolate sauce (they tell you that you can either pour it over or dip it) - we dipped. Super good!
From the Chinese Side -
- Spicy Szechuan Xiao Long Bao: One of the best bites we had of the entire meal. SO GOOD. Spicy, rich, delicious soup dumpling.
- Golden Shen Jiang Bao: Really amazing - shrimp, chicken, sesame, and vinegar filling. Pan fried. The wrapper is this orange color. We asked the server how it got the color since one of our party members has an allergy to orange food dye. What was very impressive is the server, without skipping a beat, explained the color was from the pumpkin in the dough. Just amazing that our server knew that. Mic drop moment.
- Orange Chicken Xiao Long Bao: One of the only items we ordered that we wouldn't get again. I will simply say, it was "fine". The Spicy Szechuan one was MUCH better. Just wasn't our jam. Definitely not a strong orange flavor. It wasn't bad or anything mind you - just wasn't for us.
- Sheng Jian Bao: The best bite of the day. Hands down. So simple, yet so incredible. Pork, black sesame, and scallions. Pan fried, simple, just out of this world.
- Cha Siew Pao (BBQ Pork Bun): Very traditional bao style, but we weren't a huge fan of the filling. It was simply "ok".
- Gao Zi: One of the dimsum dishes. I don't personally like cilantro, and this one had cilantro on it. Once I got over that, this was amazing. One of the people with us said it was his favorite bite of the day. Shocked how good the sweet vinegar sauce was.
- Spring Roll: Another one of our favorite bites of the day. Simple and incredible. SUPER crispy. Fantastic.
- Phat Phat Chicken with Steamed Rice: Another one of our favorite bites of the day. Just amazing. Dark meat of the chicken (thigh we think). Perfectly fried, coated, sweet and sticky sauce. Just wow. Truly wow. Rice complemented it well.
- Chocolate Bao (dessert): A chocolate lovers fantasy in one or two bites per bao (lol). Not too sweet at all. Middle was super rich 58% dark chocolate. Simple and delicious. So good!
One extra callout - the Oolong hot tea was FANTASTIC. One order was four full cups of tea. One of the best I've had in a very long time.
There were SO MANY OTHER THINGS we wanted to try, but we were way too full. We took so much home already *haha*. That said, we will be heading back soon (next week). I need to take my bestie and my Mom here so they can also experience this incredible restaurant.
Chef Andy Foo should be incredibly proud of himself and his staff for really going above and beyond - on a Wednesday afternoon at lunch time no less. Truly fantastic stuff folks - go give it a shot! :-)
