"This Escondido gem specializes in regional cuisine from Queretaro, Mexico. A standout is the pambazo — a torta soaked in red chili salsa, grilled, and stuffed with soyrizo con papas, shredded lettuce, avocado, and red onions. The brightly decorated interior (check the sombrero ceiling lights) add to the good vibrations. The Phatties family also runs a food truck, so be sure to check Instagram for its calendar." - Kelly Bone

Nice variety of options on the menu and everything tastes really fresh. The gorditas reminded me of thinner pupusas. Def gotta try more of the menu.

Phatties Vegan Mexican Restaurant in Escondido, CA is an absolute gem for plant-based food enthusiasts. I can attest to the flavorful and diverse offerings that grace their menu. The fact that everything is 100% vegan makes it a haven for those seeking ethical and delicious dining options. They also offer tasty desserts to complement their meals. Now, let’s talk about the gorditas plate—a true masterpiece! These thick, pillowy pockets of joy are generously stuffed with savory fillings, and each bite is a celebration of taste. Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or just curious about exploring plant-based cuisine, Phatties delivers on both flavor and variety. The freshly made food and friendly service add to the overall experience, making it a place I keep coming back to. So, if you’re in Escondido, don’t miss out on this delightful culinary adventure at Phatties! 🌮🌱🌟

OMG, just SO GOOD! My friend and I stopped here on our way to Temecula - it's really hard to find vegan food as is, but GOOD vegan food is impossible UNTIL NOW! We shared the guac which was outstanding! Then when our food came, our jaws hit the floor! Beautiful presentation and huge portions! My friend got a burrito the size of her head lol and I got the Gordita Plate (Gluten Free option) and added cheese and sour cream. I don't have words to describe how delicious everything was! The cucumber drink was so refreshing and the horchata was perfectly sweet as my liquid dessert. I can't wait to go back!

Google
I’m not vegan, and I’d like to say Phatties is the best vegan Mexican food ever!!! I didn’t tell my mom it was vegan and she said the nachos tasted like they used ribeye, we have to go back there! Definitely going back there Thank you phatties

Google
It is great to have options for vegan, especially in Mexican food. It is a small eatery with a few tables, comfortable enough for a quick dine-in. The chorizo potato phatties were really good. The enchiladas suizas and handmade tortillas were ok, not as flavorful as we had hoped. One of us ordered the sampler plate, but it was not fabulous, just ok. He didn't eat much of it. We were told the only way to get salsa was to order chips and salsa, which we did even though we didn't eat the chips - just wanted salsa. Salsa was good.

Google
We tried their Gordita, Queretaro Style Enchiladas , Adobaba Fries and Birria Tacos. Adobaba fries were okayish. It could have more soy/masala Queretaro Style Enchiladas were oozing out alot of oil. Rice and beans had no flavor. Birria Tacos were okay as well. Gordita was good and filling.

Google
Overall experience a 5 but the food is more like a 4 in my opinion. a little bland, needing some salt/seasoning but i can tell they put in a lot of effort in the ingredients and in the presentation. i got green enchiladas, they were good but needing some more flavor. my partner got the california burrito, which i though was too sweet but he liked it. i would come back here again but i would try something else

Real Mexican Done Vegan! This authentic, 100% vegan, Mexican restaurant has an in credibly diverse menu ranging from familiar to adventurous. Totally worth a visit to Escondido (and multiple repeats). Pro tip, take it to go and enjoy it at the historic Grape Day Park just up the street. Amazing Mexican food and a scenic setting, it doesn't get better than that! Not to be missed... Enchiladas Queretaro style, simmered in chili sauce, stuffed with shredded cabbage, avoacado and  vegan adobada Huaraches, lightly fried to perfection, with refried beans, soyrizo con papas, topped with a generous layer of avocado Nopal Quinoa Salad with carrots, avocado, cilantro and spring mix with a fresh, tangy, vinaigrette. Mexi-Bowl with sauteed vegetables, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers and nopales topped with avocado.

Yelp
Omgsh, this place is amazing! I brought my vegan cousin here, and we were all impressed. We tried their famous Phatties burrito, California burrito, and breakfast burrito - they were all made fresh to order and with full of flavors! The burritos arrived PACKED with goodies, piping hot, served with a side of tortilla chips. Upon entering, there are two self-ordering kiosks to the right. After placing our order, we took a seat, and immediately a staff member came out and offered us water, two types of fresh hot sauces, and utensils. Highly recommended, even if you're not vegan!

Yelp
My mom is now vegan and struggles to find restaurants we can all dine at. I suggested this place because my partner took me here a few years back and I enjoyed it. I don't know if recipes changed since my last visit but this place is phenomenal; it went from being good to amazing. My mom was so excited to finish her meal its all we talked about during the entirety of our sit-down. As someone who regularly eats meat I was astounded in how the "beyond steak asada burrito" tasted. In the past I have considered meat alternatives as "tasting close to meat" but this burrito was so well made I was convinced that it was not beyond meat but a normal asada burrito you would get in Escondido. If you are looking for a vegan place that sets the standard for great food and service, this is your place!

Yelp
When we walked up we initially thought it was closed. The "Open" sign was turned off and it was dim inside. We walked in nonetheless and they were very much open but it was kind of dark and the TV above the front counter where you order was also off. The guy taking orders was friendly and directed us to the QR code for the menu. We got huaraches with Soyrizo, potato taquitos and a cucumber lemonade. The drink was awesome; not overly sweet and it was super fresh. The potato taquitos came piled high with veggies and were jam-packed full of smashed taters. You get five in an order and I'd get them again. The huarache was one long piece of masa topped with refried beans, Soyrizo, fat chunks of potato and veggies. It was pretty filling and we split it between two people. High marks for their red and green salsas too - both were great. If you're looking for tasty vegan Mexican eats, Phatties will scratch your itch. If they look closed, just walk in. They're probably open...maybe.

Yelp
This is some of the best food around and it's plant based which makes it even better!

Colleen C.

Yelp
Great shop for delicious vegan/vegetarian tasty Mexican food. Super yummy!! Great service. Love the self order machines.

Mateo V.

Yelp
Pretty fantastic meal. I got the Enmolades (+sour cream +avocado). The sauce is rich and thick and really works well with everything! My kids had the California burrito and some tacos. All were pretty good. Some of the dishes lacked seasoning (salt), but that was easily remedied with a salt shaker. Also, they have menus on the table (qr code) but you aren't suppose to order with those, they are for looking and then you line up and order. For anyone reading this review to this point, then you probably are already open minded to vegan. Honestly, tastes better than most 'regular' Mexican restaurants I've been to. I'm not a vegan at all, but really enjoyed this spot!

Laurel C.

Yelp
I have had enough great experiences I need to update my review. Definitely more reliable on meal pickup, and timing is great. Would love a menu behind the cash wrap, for forever it was outside on the wall only, so you would have to memorize your order first. Very occasionally they will be out of a protein or high demand menu item, but by now I've had enough things to have several favorites. Not good for groups, it's a little place with no more outside seating, best bet is pickup or only two people to be able to snag a table. Plenty of parking, never had a problem. Food itself is great, huge portions, enjoyed everything I've tried.

Peter E.

Yelp
In a word, Phatties is GREAT. It's not easy to find restaurants that are 100% vegan, and especially not MEXICAN restaurants that are 100% vegan, so my wife and I were super excited when we discovered Phatties. Phatties hits all the taco shop favorites -- California burritos, enchiladas, tacos (even "fish" tacos and birria!), quesadillas, and on and on -- and does them in a way that you can hardly tell the difference. In our two visits with friends who live up in Escondido, we've tried the breakfast burrito, elote, birria, enmoladas with mole, quesadilla, California burrito, guacamole with chips, and more. The flavors are top notch, the portions large (no joke, the two bean and cheese burritos we got to-go this past Sunday weighed a TON), and the service friendly. Not as dirt cheap as most taco shops, but I'm willing to pay a little extra (and drive all the way from La Jolla!) to avoid eating the usual lard and dead animals while getting all the sabor. Looking forward to checking out the Phatties food truck in PB soon!

Kailey D.

Yelp
Needed some vegan food fast for on the road and honestly was amazing. My partner isnt vegan and enjoyed the food! We both agreed the beans and rice are kind of just bland but the food itself made up for it. Horchata was okay. I loved my enchiladas. Definitely worth a try and will be trying again!

Joe L.

Yelp
Yum! Zee and I enjoyed our tacos. We also enjoyed a peculiar red drink made from hibiscus flowers.

David Keith C.

Yelp
Food: It was awesome! Who says being vegan/vegetarian is boring. We had the Pambazo and the Gordita plate with chips and salsa on the side. Man oh man! Was it good. Service: It was pretty good and fast. I think it didn't take more than 10 mins to get our food after ordering. Atmosphere/location: The vibe has a mexican theme/vibe to it. It has plenty of parking spots too. Maybe seat 10 parties/pax all at once??

Deanna H.

Yelp
It's so nice to find vegan options! This place is 2 thumbs up all the way. Wonderful staff, EXCELLENT food! So much freshness and flavor! Everyone's meal was top notch! We drove all the way out here to rent a car and got screwed over... So we were in a bad mood... This place changed our attitudes real quick!! Wish we lived here... We'd eat here all the time!!!

Randy G.

Yelp
I came here after searching on Yelp for a good Vegan food place and found Phatties.... Their fridge in front was out so they were cleaning up and fixing things there so I won't say much about how the place looked but did look pretty standard for a Mexican casual eatery. I asked the guy at the counter what is good he said everything and I just laughed. He asked what do you think you want burrito, taco, etc...I said okay burrito and he recommended the Phatties Burrito and that is what i got... Prices are on Par with other Vegan places in Southern Cal.... Phatties Burrito contains pea protein with adobo sauce, sweet potato fries, pico de gallo, sour cream, vegan cheese, avocado, rice + beans. Overall, this sucker was dense and heavy....I was thinking if I eat this I need to finish it before I make the drive back to the LA area.... Luckily for me I was able to relax after in my hotel as I asked for late checkout...I was stuffed....it basically fulfilled my lunch and dinner needs for the day..... It was really tasty and definitely would come back here to try something again!

Yelp
Phatties 242 W Mission Ave ste d, Escondido, CA 92025 (442) 286-7242 My son who lovesss Mexican Food was recently diagnosed with a deadly allergy preventing him from eating it. We were recommended to come here. Plenty of parking. Located at Escondido/Mission. You come in and are greeted immediately. They have. QR code menu. With suggestions and chefs specials. They have speciality drinks, appetizers, entrees, kids meals, salads, and desserts. They have both plant based protein meals as well as vegetable only meals. Together we ordered: Horchata Phatties Burrito (served with chips) California Burrito (served with chips) Avocado Tacos Fresh hot churros to go Take a seat at one of the tables and they serve you chips and salsa (fresh home made in house tortillas, chips and salsa). Glass bottle water, utensils and napkins. Portions are very giving! I ordered two tacos and could have easily gotten away with only one. Everything is super fresh, super yummy, no heavy greasy feeling. Variety of in house made salsas. My husband who is a major steak & potatoes type of guy, absolutely loved it! Horchata was light and refreshing. Churros taste like your grandma made them fresh on a summer night! Customer service was amazing. The young man at the counter multitasked the whole time we were there without skipping a beat. Serving tables, taking orders, packing orders, even bringing additional beverages to the table. 5/5 We will definitely go again. Stoked for this place!

Stina Marie A.

Yelp
Legit vegan- Mexican food! The food is delicious! Pricing is average. Location is pretty easy to get to. The spot itself is not flashy or even cute. It's regular booth / table & chair seating. Seat yourself style with the menu posted outside in the window. Anyways, we got a few items and we were super happy with all of them! We actually ordered some more to go, lol. Definitely stop in for some yummy satisfying food.

Yelp
Went with my family and wanted to give this place a 5+ star as it is a vegan restaurant sand I want to support but after talking about our experience I decided on 1 star rating and won't go back Food does not match the name Unless we count other factors but I don't want to get cancelled so won't go there Price was on a miss Food portions okay Decor was the vibe for the San Diego areas Cleanliness needed some work But what was the wow factor - what I get it it's a mom and pop shop but we still should have standards when it comes to food health and work appropriate attire We are not a food truck or side street vendor -well there anything goes cause you in the streets I got a pix to prove it Makes for a good laugh but not for a good food experience as to keeps the mind going as to what else is going on in the kitchen

Allyson L.

Yelp
Mexican restaurant server doesn't even speak Spanish not even any Spanish translation on the screen , tip is very expensive i get it 15% of our order is a lot to just for the server to not even talk or have a good attitude really confusing and frustrating

Michelle L.

Yelp
Super tiny, they have 4 booths and then 4 tables of 2 in a row that can be pushed together for larger parties. You have to look at the menu outside before you order inside. You order at the counter and seating is first come first serve. They bring the food over to you once ready. It's super nice that they will give you a cup and container of water, very appreciated. Saturday lunch time this place was packed I got one of the last available ta Parking lot what availability but was pretty small. I got the green enchiladas super delicious, great complex flavor with lot of good ingredients. I'm almost never in this area but so glad I got to try so delicious all vegan restaurant !

Noelle D.

Yelp
I love the food here. I've brought several friends who are not vegan who also loved the food.

Chef M.

Yelp
I met Peter N from Carlsbad Foodies at Phatties, Escondido last week. Phatties is a very small vegan place, and similar to the review we did at Thanh Tinh Chay, it is built with and the food is made with, love. I order the Taquitos de Papa, which is five rolled crunchy taquitos with salsa verde, smashed potatoes, with spicy tomatillo sauce, lettuce, vegan sour cream, red cabbage, diced tomato and cilantro. Other than the fact that the taquitos are fried (which all taquitos are but I ordered it anyway with a side of rice and beans) it was absolutely mouth watering delicious and really a lot of food for very little money. I also order a salad. Very good ingredients! Peter orders the Ceviche Mango Tostado Salad. This is soy meat marinated in lime juice, diced mango, cilantro, purple onion, avocado, diced tomato and jalapeño served on or separately, two crispy tostadas. Peter enjoys his dish as much as I do mine. He also orders soup. Another good choice! Not just vegan. This is authentic Mexican food. Very happy to have two new restaurants to add to vegan restaurants I can recommend! Chef Marian

Courtney D.

Yelp
Incredible food, we were blown away by how good everything is. We will be coming back for the mushroom Birria!!

Edryl L.

Yelp
ALL VEGAN and phreaking phantastic! I pronounce Phatties like "fat-ees" primarily because it matches the size of their food (which is a great thing!). This gem is so good especially if you are looking for Vegan Maxican food which some people tell me is an oxymoron *shoulder shrugg*. There are plenty of indoor seating options though it is pretty cozy inside. Their burritos and quesadillas are HUGE and very flavorful. Some of my recommendations are: Breakfast burrito, Phatties burrito and their quesadilla con papas. They also have some vegan desserts. From my experience the workers have been friendly and accommodating. I typically call in my order to go and it's ready within 15-20 minutes. Fast, mouth watering, satisfying and Vegan! The first time will leave you wanting more *wink*.

Ashlyn S.

Yelp
I hate to write a review like this for a vegan eatery but I'm hoping this reaches the owners so that they can better their business....Food used to be fire but the last two visits it was pretty bland. Not to mention, the service from the male employee TWICE NOW has been so unpleasant it ruined the experience. He clearly hates his job and makes the customers feel like visiting the establishment is an inconvenience. Everyone in our group felt his shitty attitude ruined our lunch (two times now) We drive all the way from central San Diego to visit and support this vegan spot. We won't be returning. If you don't like where you work, quit because it shows.

Samantha K.

Yelp
My friends and I went to Phatties looking for some good Mexican food during a trip to San Diego. I wasn't totally aware that it was vegan until we got there but it didn't affect how we felt about the food! We got the fish taco plate, green enchiladas, cactus taco plate, birria tacos, and california burrito. They were all so delicious that we tried each other's food and wished we had gotten those too.

Kristen L.

Yelp
amazing food everytime! It's always fresh and consistent. My husband and I really love coming here!

Mercedes M.

Yelp
This place Is bomb I am not a vegan but let me tell you it is soooo good! I had the soyrizo con papas enchilas and I will definitely be going back to try the rest of their menu. Highly recommend it, from a Mexican that cooks home made, this place has authentic Mexican taste!

Mrs. I.

Yelp
Delicious. On time order. Great staff. Best place for vegan. Definitely recommended to go and dine in! Yummy!

Tish M.

Yelp
Loved most everything on the special Phattie plate especially their yummy taquitos de papas but the Aguachiles were a huge miss(see photo for more details). The place could & should be cleaner overall but the people were nice.

Marcie G.

Yelp
Had lunch there today and was so happy to have stumbled upon this awesome little restaurant. I had the Vegan Chilaquiles and my husband had the Phatties burrito. Food was awesome! I wish they were in OC because this would be my new go to for vegan food. Highly recommend if you are anywhere near Escondido.

Angie V.

Yelp
Churros- tasty and fun. Would def get again! I wish they sold this in their restaurant. Got this at the food truck which is harder to find. No food allergy issues. Love their food

Chelsea M.

Yelp
This place was delicious! Great Mexican vegan food, fast service, and big portions. 10/10 recommend!

Myphuong L.

Yelp
This place was poppin' on Sunday at noon! Either a lot of people are vegan or it's that good! It's hard to see the store front but you'll see the big tent and a sign for Vegan Nectar next door. Must be the same owner. Plenty of parking. This place serves salad, burritos, tacos, and rice plates. All vegan Mexican food. Oh and vegan birria which means you can't miss out on anything. You order and pay first inside before you go seat yourself. You're given a buzzer. You can sit indoor or outdoor patio. I got the Phattie's burrito and my friend got California burrito. It was cut in half so we swapped the half to try both. Both tastes similar except that Phattie's have sweet potato fries. Very flavorful and texture like meat. No wonder why this place was packed!

Wade C.

Yelp
This place was a total surprise! Vegan Mexican food that tasted authentic! Service was good, all of the menu options were explained to me, small diner atmosphere comfortable and clean.

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Phatties has always been good but it somehow keeps getting better. Filling, satisfying, flavorful, and enjoyable for vegans and non-vegans. Servers are welcoming and helpful and the ambiance is great too. Phatties is a hidden gem

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito is so freaking good!!!! My fav so far. I've eaten here a few times. Outdoor seating, dog friendly and the staff is super nice. Food is delicious. I'll be back for sure.

Priya T.

Yelp
I was traveling to San Diego and I came across this place on Yelp. I always try to check out vegan Mexican spots, and having tried a couple in LA and elsewhere, I found that this was the most amazing Mexican vegan food I've ever tried. The portion size was good. Taste was delicious. The Birria consommé had a great flavor. Lots of veggies on the flautas plate as well. Their rest of the menu also looked worth trying. This place definitely got me hooked.

Kim D.

Yelp
Decided to give it a try and the only thing I would recommend is the cali burrito. Their salsas are all too sour, and don't try the horchata, it tastes like mud water and powder. Definitely not a place I would go to for a craving

Kimberly W.

Yelp
This is located in a strip mall in Escondido.. very unassuming and it would be easy to drive on by..but don't!!! Go stop go!!!!I ordered the mole fries and avocado taco. Both were absolutely delicious!! The mole sauce was so divine. Excellent quick service and very charming and clean. I can't wait to go again snd try something different

Diane P.

Yelp
I've only tried takeout so far, but I'm anxious to go back and try more from the menu. Everything looks great. Can't wait to taste the mushroom birria! Glad that they seem to be doing so well.

Rhombie S.

Yelp
Delicious vegan Mexican food! They have a large menu so we decided to share the Phatty Platter which includes a little of everything. It was a fun way to sample and experience the variety in their menu. The platter can feed 2-3 people depending on how hungry you are, we had plenty of leftovers.

Virginia M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a vegan restaurant, you need to try this place. You won't be sorry.

Pranathi B.

Yelp
Such amazing food, and we didn't even miss meat. Prices are super reasonable for such high quality food as well. Flavors are unique, and who knew vegan refried beans can taste so good? Why do we even need the regular refried beans? I got a bowl and was feeling adventurous so got the nopales and huitlacoche as my protein. It was my first time trying nopales and I enjoyed it. It had a slight sour flavor and paired well with the black beans and rice in the bowl. My friends got the phatties platter which was undoubtedly the best bang for the buck and they were completely floored by the goridta and the taquitos. I sampled the taquito as well and it was the best dish on the table. One of my friends got the California burrito and he was practically in love with it. Quantities are humongous so order carefully!

Hillman Z.

Yelp
This is a delicious vegan option for Mexican food in the area. Everything I've tried has tasted great. They have vegan birria on the weekends which is made with mushrooms and it is packed with flavor. The California or the Phatties burritos are also my favorite go-tos. They also have unique vegan "meat" options that I haven't seen offered in many other places before like huitlacoche which is like a corn fungus, which I really enjoyed discovering here. There's a few tables inside which probably seats about 20 people total but I usually order takeout which is pretty quick about 10-15 min and they'll give you a buzzer. Highly recommend this place for non vegans to try as well!

Augustin D.

Yelp
I went crazy on my pambazo plate with vegan adobada and chicharron like absolutely nuts I just tore it apart. It's a little hot in the restaurant but you can order takeout

Machelle J.

Yelp
I am super disappointed. I have been eating here regularly/weekly for almost two years. Today I went in, and the guy at the counter said I had to order at their new kiosk. I said I did not want to do that. He said I had to. I said it will probably make me not want to eat here. So I went to the kiosk, and what I wanted I could not find. It is something I eat almost every time I go. Pretty simple, a small order of guacamole and chips. Their guacamole is the best in SoCal, in my opinion. Their food is out of this world. I have taken many people there. But due to the terrible service and rude guy, I will not go back. They lost a very good customer, and I will share my opinion with others. Technology is not always the answer. Very Bummed!! I will really miss their food but not Mr. Rude Guy!

Charles S.

Yelp
The food is so delicious. Every time I am close to this restaurant I have to stop in and grab a bite. Portions are large and could be two meals. Can't say enough about how good their food is.

Alison N.

Yelp
Stopped here after looking for vegan restaurants in Escondido. Wow so many choices and great clean vegan Mexican food. Large portions as well. Good homemade sauces and salsas as well. Very friendly staff and great service We will be back.

Kellie M.

Yelp
I heard about this place and was happy it's just up the road. The restaurant is absolutely adorable. I went in today and ordered the Taquitos De Papas and chips and salsa. It was so off the hook amazing! Everything is so fresh! The salsa is perfect. I will definitely go back...probably tomorrow. They have a big menu and I can't wait to try something else!

Ching L.

Yelp
Honestly this might be the best vegan Mexican place I've ever been to. Even the meat eaters will be impressed. The variety in vegan proteins, the portions, the flavors, the hole in the wall aesthetic, I am in love with it all. The adobado fries are amazing, my mouth is watering thinking about them as I write this. They're just loaded with so much STUFF you'll never find a naked boring fry in that dish. The queretaro style enchiladas (with chicharron) were also delicious. Everything tasted so fresh and flavorful. Worth every penny and every calorie. I can't wait to come back and try more things on the menu.

Isabel M.

Yelp
Overpriced, and underwhelming cuisine. Service was also quite spotty considering only 2 booths were full, and the rest of the place was empty. It was very dark, inside and lacked a consistent flow of food from the kitchen.
