"West Seventh is home to some excellent Thai food. Phi Chay’s no-frills environment offers comforting Thai dishes like khao soy, pad kra pao (holy basil stir fry), and khao man gai (a classic chicken and rice dish) that extend from chef Chong Ku’s 30 years of experience." - Cinnamon Janzer, Justine Jones, Eater Staff

"The former Supatra’s Thai location, the pretty red tiled building just outside of downtown St. Paul is once again serving the flavorful foods of Thailand. Phi Chay Thai Cuisine opened yesterday and is operating with limited hours, for now. The menu includes some crowd-pleasing Americanized dishes like the ubiquitous cream cheese wonton and sweet and sour chicken alongside Thai dishes like pad kee mao, laab Isaan, and tom kha gai. According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the restaurant’s name is pronounced, “P Chai,” and means big brother. The interior has been given a light refresh, including shimmering gold wallpaper. Chef Chong has thirty years of experience in cooking Chinese and Thai cuisine. He has taken over operations of the location after its previous owner and chef Supatra Johnson retired at the end of last year. Phi Chay Thai at 967 West 7th is open 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m." - Joy Summers

There’s not a whole lot of vegan options in West 7th so I’m greatful for Phi Chay’s menu which is clearly marked. I always order veggie spring rolls and the vegan red curry. I would love to see a vegan yellow curry added to the menu someday! When ordered for pick up the food is always ready quickly. If you’re dining in the service is kind and attentive. Patio seating available, usually plenty of street parking!

The service was prompt and friendly. The food was pretty delicious! We enjoyed the patio and the wonderful flowers and plants. I took some food to go for my husband and he enjoyed it as well.

This Thai place never fails! The menu is full of extraordinary dishes. Step outside your safety zone or go with your favorite Thai cuisine. Mango sticy rice, Thai tea, fabulous appetizers and of course the soups are some favs! Service is pleasurable; even during busy times. Outdoor patio seating is refreshing and full of flowers. (Great picture opportunities) Vegan options are plentiful. Convenient community location, ample parking and clean bathrooms! Cannot wait to visit again to try some new dishes!

Recommendation from a friend and it was the best night out we've had in a long time! The food was AMAZING, our server was AMAZING, fun and helpful (the only lady server 🥳), and we enjoyed all the flavors immensely. They have excellent food. We did the dinner for 2 bundle and we were able to finish all of it (a surprise for them, yet we are good eaters!) Spicey level is customizable from the kitchen and you're able to add more spice at the table, if needed. We did medium hot 🔥 for one of the soups and it was hot! It melded with the flavoring so well and I'm glad we didn't go super hot. (If I did, I could add more spice at the table!). Plenty of tables and space to have larger groups. It looks like they have a space to eat outside when it's warmer, too. Or it's just a cute patio that adds a nature ambiance to the space. 10/10 recommend ! Will be coming back!

Every single thing we ate at Phi Chay was the best Thai food I've had in a long time. I sat out in the sun, sipping on a cool Thai tea, listening to the birds chirp and burning my mouth with the spicy caddy they brought to our table. I'm not lying when I say I've thought about this place every day since my first meal. We shared the papaya salad, Thai style, which was so good. Very light and extremely flavorful. The star of the show, though, is the glistening beauty pictured here - Pad Khana with fried pork belly. Highly recommend trying it yourself. Portions were hefty, service was friendly, and it wasn't hard on the wallet. I'll be back! I especially recommend it for those with diet restrictions, as I have celiac disease and had no issues. Vegan menu is available as well.

I would definitely recommend paying a visit to this restaurant. The server was polite yet subdued, which made for a relaxing atmosphere. It is evident that the food is prepared with love and precision, and it is full of splendid flavors and colors. We ordered the Massamun curry with seafood, tofu puffs, and the Drunken noodles with seafood. The seafood was a pleasant surprise. It was plentiful and did not have a rubbery texture. I adored the chunks of pumpkin that were incorporated into the curry. They were perfectly cooked and firm to the bite. The food gives off a sumptuous appearance, yet the prices are very reasonable and similar to those of other Thai restaurants. The server asks which spice level the diner prefers, which ranges from 0 to 4. If you are a spice lover like me, I'd recommend choosing level 4, as level 3 is quite tame.

Google
Very friendly service and the food was tasty, directions followed on the special instructions. The beef was tender and the curry, although watery, was flavorful and great over rice. My favorite Thai spot. Edit- I went back and it’s even more delicious. The steamed mussels and Thai potato stir fry are chef’s kiss!

Rachel V (Scratchel)

Google
Great place for some tasty Thai. Service was excellent, food was top notch. I had the green curry with chicken and my husband got the drunken noodles we both did medium heat and added more chili oil one we tried it. Very delicious on their own but we personally added more heat. Will be back to try more stuff! Our guests had the seafood pad tom soup (loved it) and the other the Thai version of chow mein. Will def be back and it's a walkable distance from the starcade in keg and case.

Yelp
Delicious. Came here with my mom. We ordered cashew stir-fry and Rad Na. Both were delicious. They have different spice options at the table and we were able to add the amount of spice we prefer. Watch out, cause that chili oil is spicy. But SO GOOD! When it came time to take leftovers the waiter boxed them up and even added extra rice and a small container of chili oil. Comfortable and very clean atmosphere. This place is a hidden gem.

Corey H.

Yelp
A full menu of delicious-ness! One waiter was trying to cover way too much territory, so the service was slow, but we were in no hurry (until the end, when we had to pay the bill and get to the theater which was difficult. Moderate prices, good portions, nice!

Daniel M.

Yelp
A great choice for Thai food! Was very impressed by the selection of dishes you could get and how fast the food was prepared! For fried rice and panaang curry we maybe waited 10 minutes max! Great service, our waiter was very attentive to us. Only downside I can think of is that parking is a little difficult if its busy.

Joline E.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for a quick dinner on our way to curling one Thursday evening and wanted to try to find a new Thai place with good food. We tried the Coconut Shrimp and Crispy Salad to start and then shared Chicken Red Curry for our meal. Every dish was very good and we liked the spice caddy on every table! The only feedback I'd have is that we purposely got our curry "mild" so we could separately add spice (my husband likes it hot and me not so much). But even at mild it was a little too hot for me to truly enjoy or appreciate the nutty warm flavors. For how great the food was the service was just OK. There was one person working that we could see and while she only had five or six tables, the service was very slow and borderline inattentive. Other than that we'd probably try it again to see if it was an anomaly.

Sara S.

Yelp
Excellent! This is how Thai Food should ALWAYS be. We ordered the Tom Kha Gai, Veggie Fried Rice, and the Thai Crying Steak and they were all perfectly cooked with perfectly balanced flavors. The ingredients were so fresh, it was just SOOOO GOOD. We will be back as often as we visit the twin cities!

Sam S.

Yelp
Warm, delicious, fresh made to order comfort food. Ambiance is nice, clean, and the service is lovely. Take out is fast and consistent perfect place to make your go to weeknight dinner, or a special place just the two of you share. Spice level is great, but runs heavy so a medium might be spicier than expected.

Alice G.

Yelp
Amazing Thai food!!!! Simply amazing! Tee had pork belly as an appetizer and it was perfectly cooked: crispy, but not too much, and the sauce had the perfect amount of heat. I had the green curry again with pork belly and it was for sure the best green curry I have ever eaten. The staff was lovely, great amount of attention, without being at our table too much. The restaurant was clean, and simply decorated, which I personally like. They have a very small parking lot on the side, so be prepared to park on the street. Highly, highly recommend this place!

Sydney K.

Yelp
Big fan! The soup was some of the best Tom Kha Gai that I've had! Delicious flavor and lots to share. All of the portions were very generous. The drunken noodle was more flavorful than most and the pad Thai had thinner noodles than I have had in the past, but was delicious with the beef as well. I love that they put chili oil, dried chilis and other condiments on the table for you so you don't have to ask for them. I will definitely be back!!

Mike W.

Yelp
The service was fast and friendly. The food was plain poor. If it wasn't stale or over cooked, it was very bland. Would normally eat here about every other month. Now I think we're done with this place.

Tatum S.

Yelp
Great food every time! This place is my goto for Thai food. Their service is always fast and I had Maipa serving me and she was so friendly. The restaurant is clean and warm environment. The price is very reasonable for the quality and variety you get. I don't go anywhere else for Thai, only Phi Chay!

Paja Y.

Yelp
Me and my partner recently stopped into this place for dinner and boy it was delicious and a great ambiance. The dimmed lights made it feel very intimate. I had the khao soy noodles which were the perfect consistency and my partner had the beef pad kra pow and it was cooked to perfection. Will Be coming back. The service was friendly as well.

Loretta C.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place and make sure to visit every time we are in town. The spice level and flavors are always on point. Service is fast friendly and attentive. The portion sizes are enough to feed two people if you want to split an entree. They have plenty of seating and a nice little patio too.

Heather S.

Yelp
The food is terrific here. If you like spicy Thai they offer mild, med and hot. The hot is SPICY which for me was great. Big portions. We did order too much food so had plenty of leftovers. Restaurant is old school.

Kedar D.

Yelp
Good, reliably vegan Thai food is hard to come by in the Twin Cities despite an abundance of vegan food, and despite an abundance of Thai and other Southeast Asian restaurants in the area. With the closure of Sen Yai Sen Lek in Minneapolis, Phi Chay, in an off-the-beaten-track part of St. Paul, has assumed the crown as the best vegan-friendly Thai restaurant in the metro area (Amazing Thailand in Minneapolis is also solid). The veggie egg roll ($7 for two) is tasty albeit oily. Please note that I didn't confirm whether this dish was actually vegan. The vegan red curry ($15) was solid. One could argue that it was a tad salty, but I thought it was respectable and made even better with the tableside chili oil. The vegan pad kee mao ($14.50) is a can't-go-wrong noodle dish with nicely cooked mock duck and a deep savoriness. Lastly, I enjoyed the vegan fried rice ($14) as simple as it might be. It has nicely seared tofu, broccoli and green onions. Sometimes you just want fried rice. Stop by Phi Chay for solid food.

Yelp
Not sure where I was headed, but I really wanted some good Thai. The other places just didn't look nearly as appealing. The pictures on Yelp helped. Once I got there, parking was not amazing, but once I found a spot, the staff took good care of me. They got me seated immediately, and we're attentive. I ordered Tom Gai Kah soup... It was the freshest and most flavorful I have ever had . I almost went a second time for the soup.. The pineapple fried rice was amazing and they were quick to bring me limes to squeeze on top. Awesome stuff. I also ordered the chefs special shrimp. They were fantastic. (ask for extra napkins, you have to peel these. ) The dipping sauce was spicy but not so hot as to kill the flavor. One of my better Thai experiences. I should have known it would be good. The guy two tables over said he went 4 times last week. Loved it!

Misti M.

Yelp
The best Thai food ever! Gluten free options too! Service was outstanding and the restaurant was quaint. Loved it!

Ann F.

Yelp
Under new ownership since 2020ish and it's so damn good! Everything was unbelievably fresh and flavorful. The sweet & sour chicken was not a thick corn syrupy version you'd see at some other places. It was bright and vibrant. They put the Woooo in the pad woon sen! I'm surprised Ric Flair isn't part owner here. Excellent light dipping sauce for the wontons. Clean bathrooms. Small parking lot but idgaf, I'm coming back!

Donato D.

Yelp
interesting meal. They came out and looked and smelled wonderful. I got the red curry with seafood and my daughter got the yellow curry with seafood. Those vegetables and seafood were fresh, but I must say that it was rather bland. Thai food can be mild, medium or hot. I got mild, but that should not reduce the other flavors. It seems that they skiimped on the other spices that give that rich coconut milk and curry flavor when you order something like this. with a bit more care and focus on the flavoring, this could've been five stars.

Maia J.

Yelp
Such a gem. Great staff and super yummy food! Highly recommend the beef laab and chicken satay. The eggrolls are also a huge hit.

Dale G.

Yelp
Third visit: I love this place. All the noodle and rice dishes we have gotten have been great. The price is fair. We had curry once and it was okay but for noodles or rice, this place is hard to beat!

Ian M.

Yelp
Yo, super stoked to have found this W 7th Thai spot. First off, they're open on Mondays! Which is hard to find, sadly. So I ordered their Thai hot chicken wings, the pad kee mao (medium spice) and the Thai fried rice w veggies, add cashews. All of it was incredibly good. The pad kee mao was the standout and medium spice was very hot without being too much. The wings were great - served dry so I asked for some sweet dipping sauce on the side. The restaurant was nothing fancy inside but clean and well-run. Service was super kind and welcoming, and they made me feel right at home, even though I wanted to eat some of my take out food in the restaurant before I left to teach a class. Will definitely be back!

Madisen W.

Yelp
If you are looking for a good Thai food spot this is it! My dad and I ordered the family dinner for two with medium spicy! So so so delicious and it was a HUGE portion! So delicious the curry was our favorite! We had so much left over I got to eat it the next day. Our waitress was very friendly and made polite conversation, she also was very good at helping us pick our spice level! I would highly recommend this place!

Briauna W.

Yelp
Ive had take out a couple times and dined in a few as well. Everything has been very delicious, fresh, great service and I plan to continue to visit. Best fried rice I've had in a while and pad thai

Hunter M.

Yelp
An amazing place to stop and eat! They have so many great options, their Pad Thai is delicious! Servers are very nice, and the space is very cozy and comfortable.

Jay W.

Yelp
Excellent food that was accommodating for gluten free peeps. The waiter was kind, and directing towards what was safe gluten-wise, and vegetarian while being delicious. I was amazed at the wide variety of selections, and it was brought to the table quickly. Server was helpful about hotness level of spice. The place was clean, and pleasant. Phi Chai is a place I will frequent again. Thanks for such a lovely and delicious meal.

Spencer B.

Yelp
Without using hyperbole, this is my favorite restaurant in all of Minnesota. It blows most restaurants like it out of the water in terms of food, ambience and service in almost every way. I've been coming here for the last couple years now and I curse myself for not making a Yelp account sooner to write it the 5 star review it absolutely deserves. Now, I usually get the exact same thing here every time: pad thai w/ a different protein each time, but it's the best pad thai out of the other dozen or so Thai places I've tried around in Minnesota. It's the perfect blend of sweet and salty and I've always had plenty leftover to eat afterward. It's all reasonably priced too, I've never felt like I was breaking the bank whenever I went. The atmosphere is warm, elegant, there's nice music always playing, and the guy who works there (I'm so sorry, I never got your name) is always a joy to be around. He's polite, friendly, recognizes me and the person I go with, and makes pleasant small talk. Just a great dude overall and always makes us feel welcome. In summary, I give this place the highest commendation I can give - it's an amazing restaurant and I recommend anyone who reads this to give it a try.

Breton W.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is always perfect and always great service! Authentic and delicious every time!

Jessica S.

Yelp
We were so happy to see that another excellent Thai restaurant came in to pick up where Supatra left off - and we were not disappointed! The fish cakes, chicken satay, spring rolls, and won tons were all delicious starters. We had the Red Curry, Green Curry, Khao Soy Noodles, and Seafood Delight - all excellent!

Steve R.

Yelp
I like the food, service, and ambience. It is family owned and operated. I like the egg rolls because they don't have noodles, a rare find in TC. Very good Tom Kha, my go to soup. Menu is very helpful to American born folks, or those less familiar with Thai cuisine.

Gifty V.

Yelp
Patio dinner on a Monday night was delicious. I was having a craving for spicy food and our meal did not disappoint. Can't wait to go back.

Marit B.

Yelp
Delicious and well prepared dishes. The Salt and Pepper tofu puffs are so crave-able. The Maasamun curry is my go-to when I am looking for something warm and comforting. The people are so nice there too!

Jamie B.

Yelp
Ordered the Tom yum soup , laab and Thai fried rice on Uber . The food is great , the Tom yum soup is some of the best I have had in the cities . I'm definitely ordering from them again . Also the food was delivered In 25 minutes which was great !

Gao L.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Thai food. A gem! Highly recommend! Pad Thai and pho are excellent!

Kyle L.

Yelp
Been a few times. Everything I've tried has been mediocre, especially the pad Thai. The noodles are thin and plain and the sauce tastes like it was just dumped on afterwards. Heat scale is also inconsistent. I typically get medium and it has varied greatly each time.

Ona A.

Yelp
Okay, I was on my way to an appointment and happened to smell this place as I walked by. I've found a gem, the Tom yum paired with grilled mussels is a delicacy. The waiter is sweet as Thai Tea. So happy to have found another place for date nights. Highly recommend, superior.

Kim S.

Yelp
Used to be my favorite Thai spot. Last night we ordered two entrees to go. We love the spring rolls too but they said they weren't available last night My husband ordered on the phone and they didn't ask about what spice level We prefer on the entrees One of the entrees was spicy noodles Sadly both dishes were bland and not flavorful at all. Very disappointed

Phillip Y.

Yelp
I realized after reaching here that this was the same location as sarpenos. We ordered the valentines special with 2 main dish, mango sticky rice, egg rolls, and half bottle of wine for $50. Plus we got to pick from wine list which surprised me. Quality of food was same as I expected with previous owner. Price was very reasonable compared with others. I picked out moscato and they gave us 4 small bottles to make up the half bottle.

Casey S.

Yelp
My husband and I both agree that this is the best Thai food we've found in Saint Paul. We've tried a few different Thai places since moving to Saint Paul and have found most of them a bit lackluster. I'm so happy that we gave Phi Chay Thai a try last night, especially since it's so close to our house! We ordered takeout (delivery was going to be an extra $25 with delivery fee + driver tip) and the food was ready in about 20 minutes. I'm pretty sensitive to spicy food so I ordered everything in mild, which I'm glad I did because even the mild left me with a bit of a runny nose! They have a "no spice" option for those who really have zero tolerance to any kick in their food. The only disappointment was that everything came in styrofoam containers. I would love it if Phi Chay Thai would invest in more ecofriendly solutions for their takeout. Food: Red curry with beef - three stars, well balanced and complex flavors, but fell a little flat. Will try the roasted duck red curry next time. Pad See Yew - five stars, delicious complex rich flavors that hit all the right notes if you like pad see yew Tom Kha Gai Soup - five stars, the perfect balance of sweet and sour in this coconut milk based soup Fresh spring rolls with shrimp - five stars, crisp and fresh rolls with a delicious dipping sauce. The shrimp had a good texture and flavor and didn't feel old or rubbery like it sometimes can Sticky rice with mango - four stars, the rice and coconut cream were perfectly cooked and well balanced. Would be five stars except that the mango was a little over-ripe so it was sweet but didn't have that nice tangy sweetness a ripe mango has. But not the restaurant's fault since it's probably hard to keep perfectly ripe mangoes on hand at all times.

Dani P.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious and authentic. If you are looking for a authentic Thai place with reasonable prices and superb food, this is your place. On top of all of that, our server, Micheal, was very sweet and conversational. The ambiance is lowkey and casual, not a party scene. As for what to order, my group got the Chicken Pad Thai (spice level 2) and the Yellow Gang Curry (spice level 2). The Chicken Pad Thai was very rich in flavor, possibly the best thing on their entire menu. The Yellow Gang Curry was also good, but a on the sweeter side. A level 2 spice level is moderately spicy and a good fit for those who like and can handle some spice; you can't go wrong with this level. I would recommend at least ordering your dish with a spice level above 0 - especially for the Yellow Gang curry.

Neil S.

Yelp
Really good pineapple fried rice, which is my starter item for any new thai restaurant. It was flavorful without being overpowering. I am hopeful future orders will be similarly tasty, as they have many favorites on the menu.

Lynn F.

Yelp
The wine selection aside (because who goes to a Thai restaurant for their wine), everything we ordered was excellent. Perfect heat. The vegetables in the curry my friend ordered were fresh and crunchy. We ordered 2 appetizers, the fried egg rolls and the pork fat (so good!). My friend and I both agreed this even beats On's (sorry On's). I'll be back soon.

Salinee H.

Yelp
I hadn't had Thai food since the start of the pandemic and wow I missed it. Phi Chay did not disappoint me in my return to Thai food after a few long months. Absolutely delicious. Everything was perfect.

Dan D.

Yelp
Phi Chay Thai was good. We ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken and the Drunken Noodles with Chicken also. We started with an order of the Egg Rolls which were good but we have had better. The two entrees were tasty, the noodles were cooked well and the flavors were fine. Was it the best Thai I've had, no but it was good. We did a pick up order so I have to consider the loss of not having it fresh from the kitchen. Overall, it was good but not memorable.

Shelby S.

Yelp
Ordered take out through Grubhub on a whim! But I was so impressed. The pad sew ew was the best I've had in a while! Also, the pineapple fried rice was very tasty and well. Large portions and good prices. I would definitely order from here again!

Michael K.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks before a play at the Guthrie - right across the intersection. Wait staff was pleasant and were excellent taking our orders and servicing the table. It was clear they needed more staff though - as the wait to order was a bit long.

Cassandra Q.

Yelp
Best coconut curry I have ever had. Would absolutely order here again. Great selection of GF items

Kaylee B.

Yelp
Everything we had was very good. I got the pad see yew and it was very good. The waiter asked if I wanted spice 0-4, and I asked for a 2. It was definitely spicy but manageable. We went for early dinner on a weeknight so it was quiet and chill and there was no rush to leave. Definitely will go back.

Andre M.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING! Came in a lil around 7 there were only a few tables so got seated right away server was fast friendly and attentive but the food was WOW good. We had the thom ghai coconut chicken soup which had incredible lemongrass and coconut flavor. The fish cakes were extremely unique somewhat eggy lil sponges but just amazing with the dipping sauce. The glass noodles stir fry was the best one I've ever had. I highly recommend stopping in!

Aaron M.

Yelp
Great food and amazing service! I came in with a group of friends and the server was very helpful with helping us choose appetizers and entrees based on the types of food we all like. This is definitely one of the best Thai restaurants I've been to in the Twin Cities!
