The 13 Best Barbecue Restaurants In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Phillips Bar-B-Que is all business. The sign out front of this LA institution reminds you that it’s takeout only (although if you're lucky, there will be an open table in the parking lot). Ordering and pick-up lines are separated, the former is organized by an efficient divider. That is to say, expect a crowd. On weekends, the entire Mid-City community pours in for their excellent smoked meat, like succulent pork ribs and rib tips smothered in a thick, glistening sauce. Everything can be served either a la carte, in a sandwich, or combined with a few sides, but the sleeper hit here is their chicken links. The spicy, snappy sausages are sliced into thick coins with sauce on the side. Order them by the pound. Note: Phillips Crenshaw location is closed through mid-July for renovations, but their second location at 1517 Centinela Ave. in Inglewood remains open." - brant cox, sylvio martins

The 14 Best Restaurants in West Adams - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Phillips Bar-B-Que is all business. The sign out front at this Southern-style spot reminds you that it’s to-go only (although there’s a spare table in the parking lot). Around lunchtime, expect things to get busy—what seems like half of the Mid-City community pours in for their excellent smoked meat, like succulent pork ribs and rib tips smothered in thick, glistening sauce. Everything on the menu is available either a la carte, in a sandwich, or as a plate with a few sides. Almost everyone orders the pork, but the sleeper hits are the chicken links. The snappy, smoky sausages are sliced into puck-like rounds with plenty of spice and texture. Order them by the pound." - nikko duren

15 Underground Barbecue Pop-Ups Redefining the Scene in LA

"After parking in the residential View Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood, look for the light plume of smoke and follow your nose to Bootsy’s (there’s a lone speaker playing old-school R&B right next to a giant smoker that tells you you’re in the right spot). The proof is in the technique, which results in gorgeously cooked meats including beef ribs, baby backs, and incredible brisket. Bootsy’s salmon is what gets you, though; it’s perfectly cooked and full of flavor. DM Armand Bootsy Keys via Instagrm for details." - Farley Elliott, Mona Holmes

I ordered delivery of the small tray. It’s huge, absolutely massive, serves easily 4. Came with an entire loaf of bread, 6 different meats plus the two sides. I got the Cole slaw and the bbq beans, just solid and delicious. Honestly great stuff, good deal, and arrived promptly via ChowNow. I will absolutely order again.

Walking into Phillips take out only the lady at the window greeted us with a warm smile very pleasant. We ordered ribs, links, Mac & cheese, potato salad, and corn on the cob. My mom enjoyed the links and very much garlic Mac & cheese and potato salad. The ribs were not smoked or bbqued they tasted like they were boiled and then put in the oven they could have cooked a little longer they were ok tasting, the corn was boiled too no salt, seasoning or butter I got 2 corns one tasted funny and I woke up a little sick the next morning. May or may not be back.

Google
What can I say about this place. If you’re looking for a real deal bbq spot, you’ve found it. Everything on the menu is good. I don’t eat beef but my wife does and she swears by the sliced beef and the ribs. I always get the chicken dinner with the chicken sausage and half chicken. You can get the sauce any level of spice that you want which adds to the overall flavor. The collards greens and potato salad are my favorite sides to get. The price for the quality of taste that you get is well worth the price. I’ve been coming here for years but never reviewed this place. Well now you have an honest review. I definitely recommend you going to get some food from here. You won’t be disappointed

Google
Phillip's BBQ is great! I've been going there for years. Their pork ribs are meaty and delicious! Also the cornmeal muffins are very good. Phillip's is located in a very safe neighborhood near the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and Centenela Avenue.

As we were driving down the street just minding our own business, this smell whipped around and aroused our smelling senses. We looked to the left, then we looked to the right, and we were baffled as to where this glorious BBQ smell could be coming from. We made a quick U-ee and looked again to the left and then to the right. THEN - eureka! We hurried and parked the car, rushed out and joined the many others in line who, like us, had to experience this mouth-watering deliciously tender and succulent BBQ. This story ended well. 😋 I only tried the BBQ, not the sides.

Tim

Google
Smoky, tender brisket at a fair price, and the ribs have a great bark. Sides taste homemade—mac and cheese is creamy without being gloopy. Staff cuts the meat to order and checks if you want lean or fatty. Picnic tables outside keep it casual. Plenty of lot parking.

Lyric K.

Google
I was on my way to Woody’s but hadn’t been in a while so I was a bit a hesitant. Saw Phillips on the way which I’ve had at the Crenshaw location. Prices more than woodys but we got a lot meat. Most of my tips were bone. Sides need work. My order was messed up, I ordered chicken not chicken links and was told since it was already cut I needed to wait an additional 25 min after waiting 30 min 😒 so check your receipt. Barely any sauce on the meat, glad I ordered a side of sauce. For the prices, I expect more. I’ll probably checkout woodys next time.

Google
Your bbq ribs are ok at best Your sauce sucks. Your greens are undercooked and flavorless. Your hot links sucked. Your sweet potato pies sucked Your German chocolate dry as sand.

Yelp
I'm glad they open on a Monday!! Came in today for my BBQ fixed. Sliced beef lunch (at 6:39) with baked beans and a canned soda. Good, honest, nostalgic food. Parking can be tense however it's worth it. Wait isn't long either and staff is friendly. Ambiance is simple with a couple benches for waiting. Food 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Staff Friendliness 5/5

Yelp
So disappointed! I have been craving some barbecue specifically beef links and some rib tips. I used to always go to Phillips Barbecue on Crenshaw and Adams, but it's closed now. I went to Phillips on 12-23-25 and ordered some food to take home. I live an hour and a half away. I ordered a 3 meat dinner with rib tips, beef links and sliced beef. I had macaroni salad and coleslaw as my sides. I was told that it would be a 15-25 minute wait so I ran over to Ross and came back 30 minutes later. We ended up waiting a total of 1 hour for my food. I made the fatal mistake of not checking my food before I left. I was trying to hurry up and get on the road for my long drive back home before the rain started. When I finally got home after a two and a half hour drive in traffic, I went to eat my food and my faced dropped. My order was incorrect. I was given two pieces of chicken, 2 long rib bones and a few rib tips. Plus, the white bread was hard and stale. At least my sides were correct! I was so sad and upset about my order and I couldn't even take it back to get it fixed. I'm not sure if I'll go back when I'm in LA again.

Yelp
I come from TX, land of BBQ. This place hit the spot for my cravings but definitely doesn't compare to what I'm used to having. I had fatty brisket (beef slices) and they weren't melt-in-your-mouth but they certainly weren't lean either. Portion sizes were alright. Of the sides, I tried coleslaw, potato salad, bbq beans, and Mac salad. Bbq beans were my favorite. The smoked rib ends were also just alright. Bbq sauce (mixed) was tangy and not too sweet. I used my own bbq sauce I had from buc-ees (if you know you know) and it was the saving grace to this meal. Overall, not bad but not great. I still finished my plate though!

Yelp
Walked in to this place with an open mind since the reviews are mixed. I asked for the "lunch specials" and was told by the cashier (male) they didnt have any and the "the menu has been the same and it never changes".... I thought it was kinda rude. I later saw a "cheat food sheet" posted on the side window which advertised "lunch specials".!!! I ordered a dinner special (3 meats and 2 sides) and added a corn bread muffin to give it a try. I waited about 10 min for my food and paid $28.00. I received my food in a nicely packed bag, all very tight and it did nit look like anything would spill which was great. I opened the bag and started to unwrap my food. It all came In a paper plate like the ones used for nachos, I ordered bbq pork ribs, beed link and pork bits, bbq beans and potato salad. They looked good and smelled good. The sauce that came with the food already on it was not very good (I asked for mixed sauce and a separate side of bbq sauce. Here is my opinion on the taste: Bbq ribs- 6 out of 10 tender but not much flavor. Beef link- 3 out of 10- hard, not very appetizing, zero flavor Rib tips- 8 out of 10- good portions, decent flavor Corn muffin -1 out of 10 hard, no flavor, and old looking Potato salad- 7 out of 10 Bbq beans - 9 out of 10 Overall, the food was "ok" but not worth my $28.00 bucks. I WILL probably come back to try the $7.00 chicken sandwich roll and post about it....

Yelp
My review as of 1/10/2026 - I haven't had Woody's yet, but this might be the best BBQ close to my residence. The portion sizes is worth every dollar. Just pulling into the lot, I knew this was going to hit. I'll definitely be back soon. Big plus for me is that they have extended delivery via GrubHub and Post-mates, which is very convenient.

Yelp
Fantastic tasting tender barbecue and sauce All of the sides are delicious. The bread could be softer (wish they had wheat)

Yelp
Best BBQ in Southern California Good quality meat. Sauce is excellent and spicy. Love the beans and potato salad. Good portions too. You can't go wrong Never disappoints .

Yelp
I wished they change their hours and open back the location at of Crenshaw. But the barbecue is still good.. i always get rib tips mild sauce with beans barbecue baked beans that is with potato salad. Hasn't failed me yet ! This location is always clean and thank goodness for the seating. Bellisimo!

Yelp
Ordered the big platter bbq sauce was not good all the meat was burned ...... they did have it ready in a timely manner but that's probably the only thing good about this place ..... when I called to order the guy on the phone told me the price was 200 dollars when online it says 130 he said those are prices from 5 years ago I told him well shouldn't you guys update that..... if you have tried this place and liked it good for you but my advice to new customers is stay away...... still paid the 200 dollars and in my experience was not worth it at all..... there are plenty of better BBQ spots in the area......

Yelp
I've been patronizing this establishment over 35 years, when they were originally in Leimert Park. Only BBQ place I frequent. Tried and true, flavors haven't changed. I visited all the viral places but always come back to Phillips for the BBQ I love.

Ray L.

Yelp
This is not a full review as I just got greens and cornbread but they were both very good. Line moved well, good customer service.

Yelp
Phillip's has become a big disappointment. I went in and ordered the Combination Meat Dinner with Rib Tips, Pork Ribs, White Meat Chicken, and double beans. I received Beef Ribs, instead of Pork. SMH! The guy that takes the orders is really nice, but someone needs to do QC on the orders. You also get less food than before. They stopped using styrofoam, which means if you order extra sauce and/or beans, the plastic may start to melt. They also have a new telephone number, which is 310-431-4815. I'm going to give Phillip's a rest.

Yelp
My husband brought home beef ribs, pork ribs and sausage. All were amazing!! Breena was so friendly and welcoming. Although the location is not close to us, we will be back!

Maria M.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the service great! A welcoming place to get the best bbq!!! So yummy!

Yelp
I was hopeful but overall left disappointed. I ordered the 3 meat combo. Pork ribs, rib tips and beef link. The portion size of the meat was pretty good. My order was from Uber Eats and food arrived warm. Link was just okay but large. I didn't like that it came sliced up. Ribs tips and ribs were meaty but I just can't with the sauce. It's thin and tastes like it's been watered down with vinegar. Potato Salad and Baked beans were also average and I'd even say the potato salad from the grocery store and a pork and beans tastes better. If I order from here in the future I'm gonna doctor up my meats with my own bbq sauce and skip sides.
google avatar

L. K.

Yelp
They have the BEST BBQ that I have ever had. Tender and flavorful every time. The potato salad is delicious as well. I only wish they had more locations and sold their sauce in stores
google avatar

Jean F.

Yelp
I got a barbecue platter with everything in it and every piece of barbecue was outstanding tender and delicious. I didn't have to add any additional sauce. It was perfectly seasoned. Usually at most of the barbecue spots the potato salad tastes like fake potatoes, l don't understand why it's always so horrible it ruins the meal just disappointment always a waste of money because you can't eat it , although Philips potato salad & beans are a little better than the other bbq spots it's just ok! I'm so grateful that they're still in Business and they're doing such a wonderful job. Thank you for my fantastic Fourth of July feast. Staff was wonderful. Great seeing all the people in the community supporting. It tastes like pure love thank you to the staff.

Eugenio C.

Yelp
I have been getting to Phillips Bar B Que for about 15 years. The company I used to work for would buy lunch for all the employees. The pork ribs and links are my favorite. Their BBQ sauce is excellent and delicious.

T J.

Yelp
I ordered a slab of ribs & didn't open the bag until the next day I was so pissed when I seen what I was given 6 regular ribs & 5 little bites of ribs so I called & asked to speak to the manager (Jose) & I told him a slab of ribs come with atleast 12 regular size ribs not lil ribs then he proceeded to to get mad & say that's how we do it but (rudely) he said if I don't like his bones then bring it back & he'll give me my money back if I wasn't so far I would of gladly taken it back as a customer that gets ribs all the time if your in business & cannot afford to give people a whole rib then you shouldn't be in business NEVER AGAIN will I get a slab of ribs from Phillips for $30 & get cheated out of food
google avatar

Denise H.

Yelp
Wanted to loved this place but the rib tips I got were all bones I may try again . Bbq sauce was delicious
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
This is our go to spot for BBQ. We have been coming here for years and it continues to meet our needs.
google avatar

Habiba M.

Yelp
Great tasting food! Same as their Crenshaw branch! They are one of the few places in LA that offers BEEF RIBS by the slab!!! Tips: 1) their holiday hours are different from Crenshaw location so call to verify holiday hours 2) for party tray, order days ahead and show up on time to pick up 3) they have a small onsite parking lot. Free parking if you find a spot 4) no sit down or table service. 5) no restrooms Worth driving through traffic to pick up a tray every time! Amazing tasting BBQ, and consistent taste!
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Sides are meh but the meat is consistently really good. The service has fallen off a cliff. Even if you order ahead. They just aren't any good at handling orders. Today I arrived at 3:10p to pick up an order of a $220 large tray that was supposed to be ready at 3p. I ordered (and paid in full) 3 days ago. I've got hungry people waiting and they've had more than enough time to plan and prepare it, yes? Nope! They hadn't even started on the order. I had to wait another half an hour. Again. This was the third and final time accepting this on tray orders along with complete indifference to the failure. Just gonna just find a new spot to give my money to.
google avatar

Meca H.

Yelp
Ubereats order from 10/24 I ordered the rib tip lunch w/baked beans w/a side of macaroni salad, a side of coleslaw, corn on the cob and extra bread... The rib tips were cool... Baked beans ~ bland af Macaroni salad ~ same as above Coleslaw ~ I won't order again...It's different...Extra creamy, funny tasting that'll have one wondering where the hell did the recipe come from... You have to add to the baked beans and the macaroni salad (then it'll be tasty) however that coleslaw you can't do nothing with it but throw it away... Corn on the cob ~ delicious...Make sure you ask for butter (salt comes with the butter) Overall the sides I had were very disappointing except for the corn on the cob...
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
I ordered through the Postmates app and selected pickup. I've also called in my order before. My family and I have been a long time customer. The food is always good. It reminds me of Texas barbecue, so if you know, you know. This is my second time in a week ordering, and it didn't disappoint either one of those times, we often order the rib tips, chicken links, and sliced beef, a pound of each with macaroni salad, potato salad, and baked beans. The service is good, always friendly. Food was ready according to the pick up time. It's a small little place, so you cannot dine in. So it's definitely order to go. I suggest calling it in or ordering via the app, to speed things along, but if you like barbecue, and you want something that's flavorful and I mean mouthwatering delicious, and juicy... Phillips barbecue is the way to go. That's all, have a great one.
google avatar

Miss A.

Yelp
Honestly, I haven't been here in years, last time I was here it was pretty good. I know cooks change but recipes shouldn't. The sauce.... I asked for mixed hot/mild, it was bland and had no flavor. That killed the whole dinner, and I had to go doctor it up and add my own sauce just so I could taste something. The macaroni and cheese is hideous, there should never be that much seasoning and macaroni and cheese. The macaroni salad taste like a refrigerator smells. Disgusting for the price they're charging. it's a NO for me and I'll never again.
google avatar

Genesis E.

Yelp
Oooooooweeeee where do i start where do i start. I am so satisfied. As a first timer, i give it a 5 in my books. The food was so amazing. I can taste the smoked on the spare rib & on the rib tips. Not every bbq store makes the bbq bean taste like the way they make it here. The ribs was so soft & juicy .I was able to meet some of the staff at this location especially Mrs. Rhonda. Everyone who i met was very nice, kind & respectful. Take out place only no dine in. Parking is a little tricky but most definitely I'll be coming back.
google avatar

Leshele B.

Yelp
Just found out today beef ribs are not available with the combo plate. You can get them with a one meat dinner and two sides. They need to be added to the combination plate.
google avatar

Julius G.

Yelp
Actual wood smoked Q. The other chains can't even come close. You can smell the smoke. It's about as real BBQ can get short of smoking a slab yourself. Why bother? Philips does it everyday, enjoy biting into mouth watering pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken, links and sides. The meats have a smoke ring. Can your restaurant do that? Spicy or mild it's all good.
google avatar

La Tonya L.

Yelp
So, I made a post about Phillips Bar B Que on last week, 08/23/23. It was about the horrible experience my best friend father had encountered. The address of this horrible, rude place is 1517 Centinela Ave Inglewood,CA. So, my best friend father had to experience this horrible mess! He went to this location on Centinela in Inglewood! Got home to eat his BarBQue and found these maggots! Went back to report it, and the customer service person was rude talking about they don't serve food like this! Yeah what ever! I would advise anyone not to eat at Phillips and have to come home with something like this! He deserves a REFUND!
google avatar

Pee'money S.

Yelp
too much fat on the meat.. wasn't meat but all fat on the bones. the sauce is not good don't go here. i recommend any woodys over this place
google avatar

Duval S.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! That is the only way to describe our dinner. The wife had the beef rib dinner I had a half slab of beef ribs, along with two corn muffins. We both had a slice of red velvet cake. The ribs were meaty and very tasty, The corn muffins melted in my mouth, and the red velvet cake was moist and delicious. Overall, we WILL DEFINITELY be getting our ribs and side dishes from here again!

Toy P.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Get the baby back and links especially good. Throw in a side of rib tips and you are going to be amazed baby. Just enjoy and don't say I did tell you so!

Sherri P.

Yelp
Food was delicious and, despite the app giving a long wait time, service was quick. Very pleased since the Phillips near me is closed for now.

Ann B.

Yelp
I really enjoy Philips Barbecue. The sauce is the very tasty. I am very sad those because their other is closed now. :(
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
My place. I discovered it. I smelled it first actually. I was in the neighborhood around 11am and just smelled the best smokey wood, porky woft in the Inglewood air. On the way back I saw a stack of delicious smoke billowing from a shopping center roof. Skiiiiiiirt. I whipped a U-turn and parked. Picture a cartoon character being led by his nose... Well that was about 7 years ago, and I've been a loyal Chicken on a roll (mild) and a side of mac salad and a Coke (one of the few real Coke's I'll drink) guy. It's been maybe a year, and maybe a year before that, that I've been a regular, but I popped in last week when I was passing near, called in actually. The Cheers theme song was spot on, because it really IS nice to go somewhere "where everybody knows your name." Now I didn't get a "Norm" but the lady remembered me and said, "I thought this order looked familiar." It was a good feeling because I missed them too. Customer service goes a LONG ways, especially nowadays, where it's rare. I'd rather spend my $ here that any corporate restaurant. Oh and that trap banana pudding is FIRE.

Claire G.

Yelp
Great baby back ribs and mixed sauce. The mixed sauce is the best between spicy o or mild.
google avatar

D'juan C.

Yelp
This place is an old staple of the neighborhood. You can smell the wonderful smoke for blocks. I've been coming to this place since I was a kid and it's still consistently good. I love the hot bbq sauce that they serve it's the best. My favorite item to get from here is the small ends they are definitely the best in town. The rib tips are good also and the sides are just ok I believe they're store bought like the potato salad and beans. The service is ok you might have to wait a little while if you don't call in depending on the day.
google avatar

Christina J.

Yelp
The food is AMAZING! I've been eating Phillips BBQ for over 25 years! Great customer service! Clean restaurant and good energy!

Donna K C.

Yelp
Been going there since 1990..The Best! Kids Loved it, was the Biggest Treat when we would go there

Dee W.

Yelp
This is nothing like the Barbeque of years ago. The ribs and rib tips have no meat on them and they are tough not tender. I had to cook them on low heat just to chew it. The sauce is horrible tastes bland and just not good. The ribs tasted old mac n cheese and greens just bad.

James E. F.

Yelp
Great food have been going to this establishment for over 10 years service was great and large orders were on point
google avatar

Fred M.

Yelp
The food was ok, I found the BBQ sauce had too much vinegar, and no flavor. The rib tips were tender however missing the smokiness that I read about in another review. The beans tasted like pork and bean and Cole slaw too watery. The service was pleasant and fast.

Tony F.

Yelp
the food is great every time, not a long wait, a plus!!! service is great! i have been going for over 20 years!!! not alot of parking space but people go & on holidays, that is a long line!!!
google avatar

Trina M.

Yelp
They were VERY skimpy with my small ends dinner for $20! My rib tip was good. The beans were a bit too sweet.

Sweet C.

Yelp
Never again! The food was not fresh, no flavor. I ordered the 3 meat combination. Rib-tips, chicken, and chicken sausage. $25.00 and it taste like leftovers from the weekend. The potato salad was watery and the beans are trash. Philips used to be a great place to go for bbq but times have changed.

Yelp
Delicious Southern BBQ! It's one of two Phillips BBQ spots in South LA, the other is on Crenshaw. I've been to both, as well as the old branch on Leimert Blvd, and the food is equally good at all of them. My experience is that this Phillips has less of a wait than the one on Crenshaw. It's the same menu as the others: pork and beef ribs, hot links, sliced beef, chicken, and more. My favorite is the rib tips, followed closely by the pork ribs. The sliced beef is great, it's brisket, and the links are tasty. I get them with the hot bbq sauce, which is addictive. The sides are excellent, I particularly like their macaroni & cheese and the bbq beans. Another good thing about this Phillips is that it's next door to Harriet's Cheesecakes Unlimited. The nearby fish market is good too. The small parking lot can get crowded but there's usually spots on the street. Like the other Phillips the food is all to go. Due to the COVID pandemic they allow only 2 people inside at a time, no sitting on the bench, with most people waiting outside in the parking lot. They take credit cards and they've got hand sanitizer if you need it. Definitely eat at Phillips if you want good southern bbq!

I only tried the BBQ, not the sides.
