Top Spots to Eat Near Temple University | Eater Philly

"Great pizza shops are often situated close to college campuses, and Philly Style Pizza and Grill is no exception. Order one of its many specialty square pies –– like Mediterranean, Buffalo Chicken, or Philly Style which features sausage, ground beef, and pepperoni –– or try one of its many strombolis, hoagies, or sandwiches." - George Banks-Weston

Been going here since I moved into my freshman dorm at Temple university and It’s a staple. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu but the pizza is a must! And the food will last you a while too. Really cool place to go, one of my all time favorites

Google
I came for a slice and then came back for a small box full, this pizza is scrumptious! I called in initially for the price of one slice and the male who answered the phone told me to come in and see even though the price menu was most likely two steps away from where he answered the phone, that was tacky but the pizza is great I will definitely be returning when I feel like being a big back!🩷

I dont even know where to begin with this place. The service was awful and the music was so inappropriate I was honestly speechless. I took my little sister and I was so embarrassed I made her go outside and wait for me to get done ordering our food. The pizza was good though. If I ever go there again it's only going to be to order out and definitely not spending anymore time in there then I have to.

Literally what happened to this place lol. Have had such disappointing experiences with them over the past 6 months. Ordered a small pizza and fries today (Wednesday) at 6:50pm. I called at 7:45 to check on the delivery and the guy who answered said it was going out in 5 minutes and should be here in 10. Food didn’t come until 8:20. The pizza was lukewarm bordering on cold, obviously because they made the pizza a while before it went out. And the fries were absolutely disgusting, totally pale and soggy, probably because they did a BS quick fry on them and left them in the container until it was time to go out. This is the second time I’ve ordered Philly Style in the past 6 months during a weekday and had to wait over an hour for a small pizza. Tried this place again for something new, but won’t be coming back or suggesting others to. There are way better pizzerias that just opened in North Philly, Olde Kensington, and Fishtown.

After failing to find a decent a pizzeria in the North Philly area, my family and I decided to give "Philly Style Pizza and Grill" a chance. It was fantastic to say the least. Buffalo wings were great. Half pepperoni pizza and cheesesteak pizza were delicious. "Philly Style Pizza and Grill" will definitely be my new go-to pizzeria.

Google
first and foremost I apologize for the horrible pictures totally amateur but also somewhat comical, because they are not before and after pictures... they're just two pictures of the after being ransacked by my kids. The first one is a closed pizza box surely the second is an open pizza box. Guess, if the pizza was good or not...If you've somehow came across my reviews before on eateries, restaurants, hole in the walls.... whatever it may be, if they don't deserve a five-star review consuming my time thoughts and patience and to putting my thoughts into words, I will no way ever give them anything even close to resembling a five-star review. However this pizzeria has struck a hole in my heart... just as it does bring back memories of growing up in Brooklyn, New York. You could've gotten a slice and a soda and walk around and eat, it was great... however times change so do pizzerias... modernized, computerized, online ordering, so on and so forth... however one thing that did not change as their style of making a delicious Pizza I know it says Philly style Pizza and Grill... however it's truly like New York own, best I can say if you like New York thin crust squares (I did not say Chicago) you'll love this place. try it out yourself. One more thing if you decide to walk into that place and pick up or dining there, & should you encounter a salt and pepper gray-haired Asian man... Please be kind to him, he's very nice he takes the time to get your order correct every time and he takes pride in that pizzeria & his fellow members working there. So kudos to him, and may your business prosper over covid and what else the universe has to offer. I pray that you (the pizzeria) exist until the end of time.

Google
The pizza is great and the live shows are fun. The girl behind the counter is beautiful and very nice. 5/5.

Google
Excellent pizza and great customer service. I love that the pizza is square and thin. The cashier, Mary, is lovely and warm.

Yelp
Fairly good pizza for takeout. Delivery was relatively quick. Pizza always hits, though not the most amazing pizza I've ever had. Quality. Sauce is on the sweeter side which I enjoy.
google avatar

Gabriella L.

Yelp
Ordered a takeout pie with half plain and half sausage. The sauce leans on the sweeter side, which might be perfect if that's your preference! While it was slightly on the greasy side, the flavors came together nicely, making for an overall satisfying pizza experience.

Yelp
My favorite pizza around Temples campus. Went here on plenty of nights and even got the extra slices before they closed. Sweet sauce and square slices. Can't go wrong!
google avatar

Yelp
Most controversial pizza on Temple's campus. I, personally, love the sweet sauce. It's not your typical pizza. They come in square slices with a super sweet sauce. They are very oily so make sure you have plenty of napkins. Its a bit on the pricier side for pizza, but not bad when splitting a pie between a few friends.

Yelp
I was in Philly for the weekend and in search of late night eats after 1am. I attempted to place my order online but it was slightly different from the website menu so I called. I ordered a small half and half specialty pizza. Half veggie and half Philly style. The expected pickup time was 15 minutes. I arrived and the line was extremely long.. it was also Halloween eve and lots of college students were in line to order. I bypassed the line and went to the counter to get my pickup order. The pizza was a small put enough for 2-3 people to share. It comes with 8 slices and two was plenty for me. The pizza was really good. I like a little crisp on my crust and I think it could have used a bit more sauce. I'd definitely come here again when I'm in town.

Yelp
I went in to order a large pie with extra cheese and sauce and they both had their backs turned and the manager was hiding the cook and I could not see what else they were and I have no idea what they could have done to my pie, because I asked for extra sauce and paid for it, so I threw the pie out, when I got home. Don't trust them, because something just didn't seem right. That was the last time, I will ever order from that place. I have a feeling, they spit on my pie and they were hiding what they done. An Asian manager and the cook was hispanic and I'm a black man. Don't trust them.

Yelp
Great place to eat and hangout. I just got the plain cheese and pepperoni normally and always satisfied. Highly recommend

Yelp
My favorite pizza place at Temple. They open very late and there always seem to be a mix of locals and college students enjoying a slice no matter when you go. They have one of the few pizza sauces I truly enjoy - which has a delicious and rich sweetness to it. The crust is thin but doesn't feel too burnt or flaky. Strongly recommend!
google avatar

Kelsey F.

Yelp
This is my favorite pizza place at Temple U. They are open late and deliver as long as they're open. Philly style has the largest slices for the most affordable prices (a new tag line?!) a plain pizza pie will only cost you around $13 at philly style but at least $17-19 at any other surrounding pizza joint. The sauce here is almost sweet, the crust is the right amount of thin and chewy. DELICIOUS!

Tony G.

Yelp
Their regular pizza slices are average at best. However, their chicken bacon ranch and other speciality slices are pretty good

Yelp
For most temple university students, It's a good place to go . Lol. Good campus pizza to-go place.

Yelp
I won't even start this by saying "this place is the worst" because it was all good, not good enough for me to take time and write a review, but solid food for a hungry person nonetheless. I used to go here while i was in college back in 2013-14. I lived close and if I came in close enough to closing they would just give me all the pizza they had left. Yea pretty nice of them. However, please keep reading. I was recently in the area for work and figured I'd stop in for old times sake (BIG MISTAKE). So I walk in on a sunny Sunday afternoon at what seemed to be a medium busy time and ordered two slices and a drink. So after paying I go sit down while they throw the slices in the conveyor oven and wait a few minutes. As I am waiting more people walk in and order. Those people receive their pizza slices and leave. I don't think anything of it. A larger group of people walk in and order slices, receive their slices and sit down to eat. More people walk in to order slices, receive their slices and leave. At this point its been about 10-15 minutes. So I walk to the counter and ask an employee if the pizza slices I ordered we're ready. The employee looks surprised as if he forgot and walks over to the slices and throws them in the conveyor oven. He doesn't say anything by the way. No "sorry for missing my order", "it's coming right up", "our apologies", "just a second", he doesn't say anything. Who I believe to be the manager is standing beside him so I turn to him and calmly communicate my concerns. I proceed to tell him that I believe his employee missed my order and they didn't even acknowledge it. I was sitting close to 15 minutes for a "window slice". He looks at me and says "it's coming right up, its right there" in the most annoyed way while brushing me off. I ask him to speak to the manager and he tells me he is the manager. So now I try to convince him that I deserve some type of apology or at least an acknowledgement that my order was overlooked. This guy does not back down. He proceeds to argue with me in front of all of his staff and customers in the restaurant that he doesn't owe me an apology. At this point everyone has stopped what they are doing and begin watching us argue. I get so upset that I ask for my money back. Hey says "I'm not giving you free pizza" and i say "i don't want free pizza, I want you to accommodate a customer(me) that is unsatisfied". We are screaming at each other at this point and he's telling me to leave. Some of the Temple students are chiming in screaming they saw me waiting and that its messed up how the manager was treating me. The manager and I proceed to argue and he does not back down or try to accommodate me the slightest bit. At this point everyone has left the restaurant and he is closing. He's literally screaming at me while closing the restaurant. I've been there for almost 30min at this point and I'm sure he wanted me to go home. He eventually gives me a few dollars back for the pizza and I leave with my pizza. I was truly disappointed in how he choose to handle this situation. I guess I don't need to say anymore for those who actually read this. If you didn't read this and just scrolled to the bottom. DO NOT EAT HERE OR SUPPORT THIS MAN'S BUSINESS. He obviously does not know how to deal with customers and should not be in a business or position where he deals with people. Attached is a picture of the manager. If you happen to go in and see him, RUN!

Yelp
A bit chaotic but a wonderful late night spot for drunken eats. Cannot go wrong with the chicken bacon ranch slice! And let me tell you, these slices are HUGE. As a student at Temple, this is a very convenient place to grab a bite.

Alex S.

Yelp
Best place to eat as a temple student, easy, delicious and I love the pizza especially. Slices are relatively cheap so are whole pies but they're worth it in my opinion. Best drunk food as well, open very late on the weekends and never disappoint me. I've heard some complaints about management but I've never had any trouble though I'm sure there's been some. But it's philly! Who cares!
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite pizza place on Temple's campus. Stop by here for lunch or dinner and you won't be disappointed. Their square slices make most things in life feel less daunting. The thin crust provides a crunch that is like no other. Do yourself a favor and choose philly style as your next indulgence.
google avatar

AnnaMaria C.

Yelp
I got two slices of pizza and was charged $17.. I come to look at my receipt and I was charged for a burger and waffle fries.. I go up to the counter and the guys screams at me to just leave. No resolution to overcharging me.
google avatar

Jose M.

Yelp
I stick to a simple cheese slice most often, though I've had almost every other kind and never been disappointed with the exception of the bulky, far-spread chunks of chicken, but I can deal with it since that's what pizza places around campus seem to do pretty consistently. The sauce is sweeter than most, which is the only thing I've ever heard someone complain about regarding Philly Style. The crust is a nice texture, personally preferable to the crunchier crust of Maxi's, though I wouldn't say I dislike that aspect of their own pizza. The slices are big and square, which is a fun time. The guys who run the front are friendly and seemingly genuine.

Dennis C.

Yelp
Go to place on campus for pizza. It's inexpensive and their specialty slices are very good. Highly recommend the chicken bacon ranch

Layne M.

Yelp
Just getting to Philly, I heard many talking about this place, which had me wanting to go right away! This pizza is amazing. The sweet sauce, and salty cheese is cooked perfectly and is truly a match made in heaven. It's cheap, close by and complete classic! Totally recommend!

Yelp
Definitely my new favorite pizza place! Fast service and DELICIOUS food. I personally recommend the chicken pesto pizza w bacon, it's to DIE for. Delivery driver was also very sweet and patient!!
google avatar

Emilee E.

Yelp
This place sucks. Service is so slow and they never are accurate with their hours. They da close the door in people's faces and lock it. Like stop closing hours early you're just losing business. Also place is dirty and have seen bugs.
google avatar

Jordan Q.

Yelp
Great pizza at this location. They have wonderful customer service. I really have wonderful customer service. I reallyThey have the best pizza in the area. Definitely will come back to you with the rest of the family.

Shaelyn K.

Yelp
Best pizza I have ever had in my opinion. Pizza crust is thin and crispy. The pizza is also more cheesy than saucy. Pepperoni is very good.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
I've been in philly for over a decade! I've had pizza in ny and chicago! This should be the signature pizza for the city! One of he best pizza spots in the city! Love the chicken bacon ranch and the pepperonis are premium! The wings are great as well! Salad's too. The sauce for the pizza has a distinct sweetness m! My new favorite spot for over a year. Staff is great

Nikhil P.

Yelp
Employees are aggressive and rude. They dont work until closing time st sny day. For example the close that 3 but instead they say they close at 1:30. Chicken on pizza is always try and never fresh. GO TO MAXIS. Better service, better employees snd emplyee attitude, better atmosphere, better pizza.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
Customer service was stupendous! Came within 30 minutes during peak lunch hour rush. Pizza was great and fed a crowd. Will definitely get again!
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
If I'm on around Temple and want a slice, Philly Style is the first place I head. Good for recovering from a late night.

Shannon S.

Yelp
Closes early like every night. Don't ur say ur open til 3 am if u close at 1:30am I got money moves to make and don't need you wasting my time when I could be walking to McDonald's

Michael B.

Yelp
The workers refuse to make milkshakes. They are on the menu. Employees also always have a bad attitude and complain to your face when you ask for a milkshake.

Caroline L.

Yelp
DO NOT order with the girl at the cash register. I came to philly style to order food for the eagles game and she continuously rolled her eyes, told us to hurry up, and told us that we're drunk. We were perfectly respectful and she was so unprofessional. Will not be treated so rudely again. Went to the manager to complain and he laughed in my face. The most unprofessional business I've ever been to and I'm almost positive they spit in our food.

Katie O.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here many times and it was always decent service and good food. Although my last experience was a bit worse. Placed the order and an hour later when I called, whoever answered the phone was dismissive and made it seem like an inconvenience that I wanted to know where my food was. Quite annoying if you ask me.

Jesse W.

Yelp
Everything I've had here is great, including sandwiches and pasta. The pizza feels like the weak spot to me, but mostly because it's a bit different from what I'm used to. Very highly recommended.

Tim B.

Yelp
Best pizza I have ever had.pizza is great employees are nice, just need to open a location in the suburbs.....5 stars from me
