Best Sandwiches in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Though the French dip at Philippe the Original may be the most widely known in town, the version from Phil’s Deli & Grill is a contender for the best in town. The French dip here is served with thinly sliced tender brisket that comes pre-dipped in a salty au jus. A soft French roll holds it all together without getting in the way of the rich meatiness. The sandwich comes with a side of bone broth au jus for extra dipping needs, or sipping pleasure." - Mona Holmes

This place is great. Service is even better. I had the pastrami with fries, and my wife had the avocado cheese omelet. The food was delicious. In the of the farmers market at the Grove. They will also validate your parking ticket. Great people. 👍🏼

Google
I stopped here early one morning seeking breakfast 😋 and guess what I found? Yes a really good breakfast with some of best people who work here, with their dedicated work ethics along with great customer skills, I liked the cook 🍳 😀 what he made was the best scramble eggs in town or was it that I had not ate eggs or had breakfast for 2 months or so that made it delicious but after I went and brought some eggs 😋 they didn't taste like theirs. I guess you get really good when it's served all day. Thank you to all of you 😘 You gonna read some unflattering comments, but I found what I had to be perfectly good 👍 even the French toast. I couldn't complain about yeap I've seen that comment.

Food street hawker. Alfresco sitting and open concept - buy your food, find a seat and eat. The Philly Cheese Steam Sandwich @ US$17.95 (Combo) was a good meal for me. The beef was well seasoned and prepared. Top with cheese between baguette. My personal favourite. Pastrami Sandwich @ $US$18.45 (Combo) was my daughter’s lunch. Smoked beef between whole meal bread. Prices are before taxes and gratuity. Be prepared to look for seats before ordering. Tend to get crowded during meal times.

Google
Great spot with super friendly staff! Since we had already eaten quite a bit at the Farmers Market, we just ordered a hot dog and shared a Philly cheesesteak between two people—both were excellent. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Definitely a gem in the Farmers Market.

Google
Stopped here on a whim for breakfast while in vacation and visiting the Market. Food was so good, I dragged my spouse back the next morning for breakfast and we both agreed it was one of the best breakfasts we’ve had on this trip! I did takeout on the first day and ate in the market on the second day, the atmosphere of the market is truly unique and relaxed. I was impressed with how clean and authentic it is. Highly recommend!

Google
Value for money. Ordered the breakfast set. Pastrami and egg. Could choose either sunny side up or scrambled eggs. Also either hash brown or tomatoes. And toasted bread. Pastrami was a bit oily for my liking. But overall the set was good. Also tried the Reuben sandwich. Yummy.

Google
Everyone was friendly. The portions were really small for $18-plus. I got two scrambled eggs, two bacon strips, two sausage links, and two pieces of French toast that were basically air. Not sure what they were dipped in, but it was clearly not eggs—maybe a watered-down base to cut costs. They also had zero flavor, and the high-fructose corn syrup, watered-down syrup didn’t help. Skip it! Maybe get the pancakes instead. Trust me I’m from Philly I know what great food is!

Google
French Dip sandwich meat was super dry. Staff was completely apathetic. The veggie sandwich was okay but the swiss cheese was super dry and tasted old. Overall disappointing and overpriced. I understand there's a lot of inflation but that's exactly why you need to try harder. If your food is meh and your staff is meh and your ingredients are subpar.... we have other choices.

Yelp
The Grove behold many treasures and Phil's shines! Met clients for breakfast and it didn't disappoint. Huge plates of homemade cooking. The omelettes are delicious and amazing. The menu has countless offerings. I gotta return!

Yelp
This place was great! Fresh & quick. $12 with the combo of fries & a drink. Service is polite and fast. Cute to sit at the counter or grab to go!

Yelp
One of the best chili cheese dog I've had! There was a short wait since it was the weekend. But good portion size and for the price, I think it's pretty worth it.

Yelp
BLUF: Pastrami Sandwich (yes) Patty Melt (yes). Can never go wrong with lunch at Phil's no matter what you order. The Rye bread for the sandwiches was a soft as a cloud. The fries were hot and crispy. Service was very good as always.
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
Hmmm. Not the best, but pretty good when considering what Phil's is in the middle of; a tourist mecca. If tempered with it's location and the other food options, it is actually pretty good. Reasonably priced, large sandwiches and fresh enough ingredients. If trying to survives as in where it has to compete with quality restaurants it would probably not survive. But here, in a haven of overpriced and poorer quality competitors, they are pretty darn good. I'd return here if in the area and was too hungry to leave and find a quality restaurant.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! The food here is amazing. It's literally one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever had
google avatar

Yelp
Best French dip in Los Angeles at a cute stall in the farmers market. Delicious is not the word. Light, flavorful and tender with super good fries on the side.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
Pastrami on rye was very good. The bread was very soft. The pastrami was warm and juicy. I do wish it also came with pickles. The fries were fresh and not salty.

Patricia G.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting! I had the market cheeseburger and fries. The fries were cold, the cheese wasn't even cheese and the meat was over cooked.
google avatar

Samuel B.

Yelp
LOVE Phil's! An LA institution! Have been coming here on and off since 2013. I truly think they have the best Roast Beef on Rye in the city, and always at fair prices too. Staff are always friendly and food is always consistent and always hits! Recommend to anyone visiting. 10/10.
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Came here with friends from out of town, never have a pastrami sandwich before but it more definitely did not disappoint!

Yelp
OK, so there's numerous sandwich places here( farmers market), but I always go to Phil's. McGees is right across the way. And sort of they have many of the same things like they have a Reuben and they have a French dip, but the prices are a lot steeper at McGees. What I like about the French dip at Phil's is that it's a perfect size.. for eight dollars more you can get about the same thing from McGee, but in my opinion, that's not as good as Phil. I think the bread is outstanding as is the beef. My only complaint is I think the dip is a little bit lacking in flavor and salt. The fries are fine, but I could skip them. I think the service is really friendly and the people behind the counter are pretty awesome and quick. Great place for a burger or a hotdog or something like that. Also, they serve a pretty good breakfast.. price point is perfect. It's basically diner food I guess but it's definitely a step above Denny's.

Yelp
I went for the $15 DineLA patty melt, side and drink. The guy charges me $14.95 for the patty melt and $1.05 for misc? WTF is a misc? I even paid cash. Didn't say which sides or drinks I could NOT get. I understand they are busy, but tell me what drink or side I can get then. On their website the patty melt itself with a side is $14. I'm confused. So if this cashier charges 1.05 for every DineLA special or just every customer, how much is that extra per day they are making? As for the food? The patty melt was ok. The patty wasn't hot? The only thing good was the onions and the crispy, toasty bread. The potato was not fully cooked in the potato salad. Unless the potato supposed to be a bit crispy like an apple? Or too big of a piece? Oh well, I tried. I'm sure their food is good and there's plenty of other restaurants, but what really got me was the MISC charge.

Yelp
TASTY OR WASTEY? Totally Tasty!!!!!! We go to the Grove when we visit LA. It wasn't until we watched a Bobby Flay show, that we found out about this amazing outdoor market behind the Grove. This is where we discovered Phil's. The pastrami sandwich and fries are the best I've ever had. Quick service. Wonderful outdoor eating. The prices are great. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
The service was great, and the portions were satisfying. Personally, I felt the food was a bit pricey, but it was really good overall, and it came out quickly. oily tho.

Jenny M.

Yelp
Great spot @ Farmers mkt sat. Friendly staff great eggs & bacon very reasonable considering the area . Always stop by when in town .
google avatar

Andrea O.

Yelp
If you're craving a burger with a home styled flavor this is the spot to go. They also have a bunch of breakfast options (I'm not a fan of breakfast foods) Prices are a bit higher (darn inflation!) but the service is great and it's an easy pick if you're looking for something simple.

Yelp
When I sat down with my two partners by my side I was blown away by the beauty of this old time deli and grill. Wow, all I can say is truly wow, the food blew me away with such an expansive menu that feels like it goes on forever, the ambiance was immaculate and made me feel as if I was back in time. And the service might I add was stupendous and I must come back before I pass oh so very soon. Pass gas ofc

Yelp
With so many food options in the farmer's market, Phil's Deli fell flat. Food was just okay and service wasn't great. I ordered the Pastrami Special and it was just alright. I've had better at Togo's/Subway. I was disappointed the potato salad wasn't good at least - pretty bland, and they put peas in it! (I'm not the only one with a universal disdain for peas right?) I love that they had potato salad as an option and not just fries, but the recipe has lots of room for improvement.

Yelp
Outstanding French dip and Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches! Tasty fries. Ambiance was great at the Grove, lots of friendly people to talk to at the bar area of the restaurant. Very pleasant experience, my teenaged son loved it as well. I was jealous of the couple that sat next to us and ordered the pancakes as they looked delicious.

Yelp
First time walking through the market and was in the mood for a treat. Phil's deli didn't disappoint especially being a new resident to California. Last time I had a tasty pastrami sandwich was back at my home town, NYC. Thank you for the option of adding onion rings too. My wife had a cup of their fresh squeezed orange juice and truly enjoyed as well.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and service at Phil's has always been consistently delicious and on point. I've been going there for years and I've never been disappointed. I highly recommend this restaurant and I have absolutely no criticisms. Keep up the good work, 'Phil's.'
google avatar

Yelp
Not my favorite deli place unfortunately. I came here on a Friday night and I ordered the Reuben sandwich and it was way too salty the meat was so overstuffed I felt like I couldn't taste the rest of the sandwich. The service was good, kind/ friendly no complaints. A lot of seating, you do have to go get your food they don't give it to you so keep an eye out.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying this place yesterday with my friend! We got the tuna melt sandwich and the pastrami sandwich as well! They still let us order despite the fact that we came a few minutes before they closed They also let us eat on the counter when they were already cleaning and fully closed. The sandwiches were really good! I totally recommend!! I'll definitely try the cheesesteak sandwich next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Just about everything in the Farmers Market is phenomenal. Breakfast at Phil's...? Yeeeeeah! This place has that old school diner cool vibe, right in the middle of the market. Just sit a stool along the counter and enjoy. I kept it simple with a breakfast burrito with bacon and avocado. Friend had an omelette. Both were righteous, brother. I'd say... yeah... Go here.
google avatar

Shirley W.

Yelp
What a fulfilling grub! The Reuben sandwich is so delicious, especially accompanied by some crisp onion rings. Certainly having a hard time putting it back down. Also worth mentioning, the fluffy pancake. YASSSS!
google avatar

Yelp
Food and service sucks! I was craving a Philly steak sandwich, so decided to eat here. It was such a disappointment because my fries were over cooked and the Philly well , it's got no flavor even though it has mushrooms and green peppers it just didn't do it for me. The oj is diluted with water and their customer service needs lots of improvement. I had to get up many times to ask for napkins, extra ketchup my drink and so in. The cashier instead of saying I'll be right with you. She would say hold on. I would ask for the stuff at the order station then follow her all over the counter to get the stuff knowing that was at the order station. My husband ended up eating the Philly stake and the fries stayed behind.

Yelp
Great brunch place in the farmer's market next to the Grove. COVID-19 Measures: Owing to its location in the farmer's market, Phil's outdoor seating is very well ventilated. The staff at Phil's Also wear gloves and masks, so you can feel safe while eating from Phil's. Food: I have ordered pancakes and a reuben combo from Phil's. While the pancakes we're pretty good, I definitely preferred the reuben. On my next visit, I want to try one of Phil's other sandwiches. Location: Located next to The Grove, Phil's is located perfectly for a weekend brunch/mall trip. Service: The service was good on both my visits, although my friends both said that the toast that came with their orders wasn't buttered. Takeaway: Visit for brunch.

Clarissa P.

Yelp
The Pastrami sandwich was sooo good.. I love it that I almost don't miss a week without passing by here because I can still take home the other half of the sandwich and eat it at home..I also ordered their side salad and it's soo good with the pickles plus a little mayonnaise.

Yelp
Good for being hot food on an early-ish Saturday morning. It was National Bacon Day. I had ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg added, but when I got the plate, there was no bacon on the burger. My boyfriend opted for the Western Bacon Cheeseburger with an extra patty and a fried egg on it. Side note: you don't need to add an extra patty to these burgers, these are hefty. The fries are good, probably close to the Burger King style: a bit overly starchy but still crisp and hot. The ingredients were fresh. Service was definitely friendly, but it seemed like there were issues with the person entering the order into the system. I'll probably go back, but will try something else from the menu.

Ron G.

Yelp
Delicious, being from the Midwest reminds me of home. My son first rime teyimg pastrami, but he loved it.We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing!! Great Customer Service as well, got food in under 20 mins. My girlfriend and self cleaned our plates!
google avatar

Dwayne X.

Yelp
Food here is not like it use to be. Unsafe food handling practices. Cooks and staff don't use gloves while cooking. I have always been a customer here. Never again. Pride has gone.

Gary W.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Besides it being completely tasteless, it was the smallest Matzo Ball soup portion for $12. Pictured is a 22oz bowl so you can see how small it was. Please do not order this and go somewhere else if you'd like Matzo Ball soup. Canter's Deli is pretty close by and tastes a lot better.

Yelp
Hugo was a fantastic server! We shared a Turkey sandwich with avocado on sourdough with a little mayo and a side of french fries. My love ordered the Dr. Brown Black Cherry soda and I had the old school Martinelli's Apple Juice. Our order arrived on two separate plates . He offered to validate our parking ticket - WHAT?! Darn we parked too far at The Grove! Next time - good to know! Every time someone finished eating near us I noticed the employees here were quick to clean up after them. Nice! There were about 6 guys working at the time of our arrival )3:30 on a Saturday) and there was a constant flow and hustle. They serve just about anything fast & American here - sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, soups & salads. Our sandwich came out great and tasted delish! I highly recommend this place for a quick meal within the Farmer's Market.

Cesar X.

Yelp
Quick service with friendly staff. Food was great while being affordable Got the sandwich with fries and a drink as well.

Diana F.

Yelp
Looks like the original owners checked out of this place. Soulless, tasteless fare. A few years ago the best pastrami on rye, now it's definitely not. Service is also not good. Everything you say is taken as if you were demanding the impossible. No training here and I blame it on the owners. You lost a customer.

Lucey M.

Yelp
Wow I love Phil's deli special breakfast! I got the French toast with sunny side up eggs and hashbrowns instead of sausage or bacon and it was amazing!! Everyone there was so nice and the service was great! Their restaurant is clean and tidy which I love about a restraint as well!
google avatar

Cynthia J.

Yelp
Service here is absolutely terrible and it's very disappointing that theirs no vegan options. I only get the fries (everyday) and the staff is very unfriendly and often times make me feel as if I'm bothering them. Great customer service goes beyond a hi, how are you doing. If I could give y'all zero stars I would.
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
I was at the grove today killing some time with my cousin and we stumbled upon Phil's Deli. I was a bit hesitant at first because I wanted some crepes, but I'm very glad I dined in here instead. I ordered the #5 which comes with two pancakes, eggs and protein. The woman taking my order was kind enough to substitute my eggs for hash browns seeing as I don't like eggs, and informed me that I could do half sausage and half bacon which is great when you're indecisive like me. My cousin ordered a pastrami sandwich and enjoyed every bite. I'm bummed out I didn't take any pictures, but rest assured the quality and speed in which you get your food is great. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious just how I like them.
google avatar

Danny Y.

Yelp
Staff is very nice and helpful. Pricing is comparable to the other nearby options. Parking shouldn't be an issue since it is at the farmers market at the Grove. Fries are hot and fresh. Tuna is also fresh and yummy. 3.5 stars that I rounded up.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Been coming to Phil's for years and always look forward to the breakfast or a deli sandwich with a doctor Brown cream soda. Well that's no longer the case. I got handed a Shasta cream soda. Ugh. At least give us A&W if you're gonna cheap out.
google avatar

Felix E.

Yelp
Pancakes were tasty and fluffy, Eggs were solid, and French toast was good. The only problem was the syrup was in a packet and seemed tasteless. I wish there would have a better syrup option.
google avatar

Nina A.

Yelp
Cute little stand in the farmers market. We got a omelette one morning and it came with hashbrowns and was really tasty! It was a little expensive, but that seems to be on point for the famers market. It's for a quick bite of You're staying in the area.
google avatar

Jayme T.

Yelp
This should be 3.5 stars. Hubby and best friend got the Philly Cheese Steak and was impressed. Said it was one of the better ones he has had in a while. Looked really good. I tried the BLT. It was ok. There wasn't a lot of bacon, I counted 3 pieces. They are all piled in the middle so it looked like more cut in half. So I guess there isn't much to say about that. The star of this place was their fries to be honest. Those were really good. Crispy but not over cooked. We all agreed these were delish! Next time I i would probably skip this stand unless I was craving a philly.
google avatar

Nelson B.

Yelp
If you're going to charge me $13.45 for a pastrami sandwich, at least give me some sort of bang for my buck. I took six bites and it was gone. I could fit the entire sandwich in my back pocket.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Phil's Deli & Grill is understandably one of the more popular options at The Original Farmers Market. Their menu items include consistently good diner food classics with quick and friendly service. I recently had a cheeseburger during breakfast hours and enjoyed it. Overall: 4-5 stars.
google avatar

Guy J.

Yelp
Not that impressed with the pastrami sandwich- no flavor and fatty. My gf thought so too. The service was very good and the front seating area exceptionally clean. The fries were good.

Yelp
Had a really REALLY good meal at Phil's a few days before Christmas. We got to the Farmers Market area a little after the lunch time rush and were searching for some good food and quickly. We were starved, had just come from Christmas shopping at the Beverly Center and still had some more to do at The Grove but we needed food immediately. Phil's is the shining beacon of sandwich goodness in the middle of the Farmers Market. So glad we decided to eat there. They had a daily special written on a small chalkboard that caught our eye: PASTRAMI. I opted for the pastrami combo on rye with fries. The sandwich was so good. Not just because we were hungry but it was actually really good. We payed at the register and decided to eat the counter. You can also sit down at a counter stool and order from there. The sandwich was so tasty. The rye bread was not too strong (just the way I like it). The pastrami was delicious and cut medium thin. It was smoky & tasted great. The fries were cooked perfectly. They were nice and crispy. No need to ask for well done fries. It was the perfect meal. The sandwich with fries was around ($12). Service at the counter was friendly. I liked sitting there and seeing the cooks fulfill the orders and also see what everyone else gets. It was great. A perfect Farmers Market meal. I will certainly go back again.
