31 SF Coffee Shops For Getting Work Done

"Wifi: Yes The mint mojito at Philz is basically dessert masquerading as an acceptable adult drink. Grab one (and maybe a pastry or bagel) and use the sugar high as motivation to finally respond to those emails you’ve been avoiding. All of the Philz locations throughout the city have wifi, but we like the Castro outpost, which is lowkey and spacious." - lani conway, julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

9 Spicy and Creamy Chais to Keep You Cozy in San Francisco

"Philz is really a San Francisco coffee wunderkind, and for the oldheads it can’t be beat. Baristas are willing to pack the filter with spices if you ask, in addition to the fresh mint and added cardamom. Alternative milks, including oat, are available upon request." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
This by far the best Philz Coffee I have had. They are fast yet take care to make a great cup of coffee. I loved the fresh blending of beans and the pour over. I enjoy my coffee black and they make the best! Plus the atmosphere is welcoming and decor is great! Everyone was friendly - it was a great experience even though I just went for a cup of coffee!

I was in the Castro and craved a cup of hot chocolate, and Philz was right around the corner and right within my budget. Their hot chocolate isn’t my favorite, but they are in my top 10. I had a small hot chocolate with light sweetness and it met my expectations. The employees were so delightful, and I’m happy to see Philz support the people of the Castro district and its pride culture. It’s a really warm and welcoming place to grab a drink. Overall, 4/5.

Google
Can you be more blown away by a simple cup of coffee? Here maybe you can. I loved it and fell for their dedication to honouring such a beloved civic Leader. Long live the Castro!

Google
I had a very pleasant experience visiting this coffee shop. The barista who served me had excellent customer service, and she ensured that I had my morning cup of coffee, tailored exactly to my liking. The shop is also very spacious, which makes it the perfect place to get some work done.

Google
I had a great fresh mint tea with honey here, which I really LOVE and can rarely find at cafes. The service is great and they get extra points for playing Cerati 🇦🇷💕

Google
One of the popular coffee shops around the Bay Area for their different flavored coffees, they have some mixed specialized drinks but usually it’s the coffee you choose and you decide how much cream and sugar you like. I don’t like my drinks as sweet and creamy so I usually as for less. I go for the Philtered Soul or Mocha Tesora. My younger years everyone would get the Iced Mint Mojito and that would get me wired. There’s both indoor and some outdoor seating here, very nice and cozy inside. There’s street parking and service is great! When you get your drink they call out your name and you can try it to adjust your sweetness to your liking!

Google
options are limited, drinks lack flavor, and the staff at their Castro location have a distinct attitude problem. The passive aggressive type🤢. I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but this has been a consistent issue every time I visit. After my last experience, I won’t be coming back.

Google
Their tagline is “we do coffee differently”, and I’d say maybe if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I’m a daily coffee drinker, but my taste is pretty simple: drip coffee, an americano or a latte is my go-to order. Philz apparently doesn’t think these options are good ones to offer at a coffee shop. I ordered a named coffee the barista recommended. I didn’t love it. Tasted like those coffee machine from gas stations that fill the cup with powder, then a dark liquid. Drank only half of mine. My travel partner loved their mocha, for what it’s worth.

Yelp
Stopped into here on a Thursday afternoon stroll down the Castro. I really just needed a washroom (and they have a clean gender neutral one!) but wanted to order something. Got the Ginger snap drink with decaf coffee, it was delicious. Staff were awesome! Not a ton of seating but I would work on my laptop from here.

Yelp
Like all of the Philz I've been to, this one is great! The baristas are super nice and always ask how you like your drink. This one also has pretty numerous seating options so a good place to work for a bit. LOL I also appreciate that they let you know ahead of time that there are no pumpkin drinks up front. It did give me pause but they still have some good fall options

Yelp
Always love visiting Philz! The Mint Mojito and Ginger Snap are staples in my coffee-drinking diet. This spot is lovely! Dressed up with pride flags and portraits of Harvey Milk. This is certainly the coffee shop for the Castro and a lovely spot for anyone to visit. Deanna (they/them) is a wonderful coffee-make. They made a delicious Ginger Snap for me today! The whole staff was stellar!

Yelp
If you're from SF or the bay and you still haven't tried Philz yet,...well, I really can't help you there as you've probably been living under a rock. Unless you're allergic to coffee or caffeine, Philz coffee is a staple of the bay and really the best of the best, even with all the hot new trendy coffee shops in town. I admit, I'm actually a Peet's girl. Hey! They have a really great plant-based/vegan menu and offer vegan breakfast options! But I recently came specifically to this Philz location the other week to take my family from out of town and it affirms my opinion that Philz is still a great solid choice after all these years. They always have fun seasonal drinks to choose from or try the classic Mint Mojito. The baristas are super friendly and cheerful, and bring a close community feeling to this location as they are familiar with all the regulars. This location is decked out in rainbows and has tons of Pride, which I absolutely love. Tons of artwork from local queer artists are featured and available to buy!

Yelp
This was my first Philz location I visited, and it's my favorite! As an out of towner, the ordering system/the menu at Philz can be kind of confusing. They don't do lattes, just pour overs. However, how you order your drinks can end up latte-like. The Castro employees are the most patient, and also helped explain how I can try to recreate my favorites at home. While I'd love to visit this location all the time, I live on the east coast soooo...No Philz there. Hopefully one day though!

Yelp
Fabulous coffee shop in the heart of the castro. Super friendly baristas. One even watches vanderpump rules!! Ambiance is cozy and quiet. Good coffee options. Yum!!

Yelp
Love this place coffee freshly made paid parking plenty of seating.Prices are high but products are amazing, lots of shops in plaza area

Yelp
I've heard a lot of hype about Philz Coffee, and it's absolute garbage I tried the mint mojito which is what they're known for, and first off there's no mint in it, and when I asked they said oh but the flavor is still there, but I would say it was weak at best, I've had better mint flavor from my toothpaste. As far as coffee goes it tasted about as good as 7-11 or gas station coffee that sat in the burner overnight, you're better off paying for quality or getting the gas station coffee instead It was tough to find seating especially when a group of 10 took over three tables, but eventually you're able to find a seat in the cozy ambiance of the Castro

Yelp
The Philz in Castro is definitely the worst in SF. They regularly close early, the staff and managers are rude and dismissive and they are often out of standard coffee offerings. I'm a big fan of Philz generally but sadly this locations falls short.
google avatar

Denis A.

Yelp
Absolutely amazed with lack of service at this location! I love Philz and I went to other Philz locations many times but I was so surprised about how they treat customers at this particular Philz Coffee location!! Waiting time for your coffee is taking forever and on top of that when your coffee is ready THEY DONT CALL YOUR NAME TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THE DRINK IS READY!!!i I literally had to go and figure it out what drink is mine and the girl on the counter was no help at all!!

Yelp
I was visiting SF for a short period, and I didn't know about this coffee place. I just walked in bc I desperately needed a bitter sip of coffee when I was walking through Castro. In all honesty, the super queer vibe drew me in :) I love seeing businesses like this around the town. It's such a friendly vibe, and this location has displays/sales of artworks by local artists, which is so pleasing to look at. I got the ecstatic iced coffee (not pictured), and it was great! It wasn't sour like most other coffee places, so it was perfect for satisfying my cravings.

Yelp
Amazing service, delicious pastry, good coffee. A jewel in Castro. I keep going back!

Yelp
This was the place--where I had my first mojito and ever since then I was hooked. Who knew after my first visit to SF made me itching to find it in SoCal. I always get mine with the house sweet cream and extra mint. Even now, it's a must have! Castro is a street you bring your morning butt out to see the cute streets dressed in rainbow walkways and homes as colorful as you name it. I've had bits of memorable conversations with friendly strangers, seen some ongoing protests, or busking.

Yelp
Visited in person and ordered via delivery. One of my favorite spots in the Castro. Great coffee, individually made per order, so it does take time. Very friendly staff, and they have little milk bone cookies for the fur kids. Depending on my mood, I order different drinks every time. Sometimes iced, sometimes hot.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent customer service and easy check out process. The staff is always warm and welcoming to new guests. They have a gift for personalized service and professionalism. Would recommend families and friends to visit this branch.

Yelp
Good coffee, good service, good space to read for a bit. My favorite is the Philharmonic and can't really taste the difference between the old bean and the new. My only feedback is the restroom needs to have a good cleaning every once in a while, I understand some people may use it for "cleaning up".

Yelp
** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** This particular Philz Coffee and I go way back..way, way back when it was around the corner next to the laundromat where QualiTea is. Bubble tea is the new latte, at least it probably feels that way to the BTS-obsessed crowd, but to the rest of us, the ones who still have vinyl LPs in the attic, we follow Philz wherever he may relocate. Especially during a pandemic when the comfort of their individual brews become essential sustenance, and they make it easy with the Philz app where I can time my pickup just as I pass by. Of course I got my Large Silken Splendor Light/Light for $5.46 (photo: https://bit.ly/3q6YehT). What else is there? COFFEE - 5 stars...Philz. Full stop. AMBIANCE - n/a...the view from the outside is just fine SERVICE - 5 stars...on time and ready to imbibe TOTAL - 5 stars...needed ambrosia in the time of COVID RELATED - Exploring the Castro? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2HrpFPC

Yelp
I love this place! The folks who work here are so friendly, they make amazing coffee, and the people-watching is fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick service & friendly folks! Indoor & outdoor seating with rainbow accents. Coffee is strong and they fill cups to the brim! My small coffee was a lot. Sadly the restroom was closed and nothing nearby open. They only use paper cups. Was hoping for something more eco friendly like a mug.

Yelp
Best location! I love this location because it's in the heart of the Castro and it's very retro inside and inviting. The coffee here is amazing with customer service to match! I had the new oatmilk cinnamon latte, and let me tell you :o . This latte is so smooth and crisp with mocha flavor gently blending with the cinnamon to create a mouth fiesta! I was helped by Becks and she was so friendly and kind, and not to mention she can make one lovely latte with love stirred inside! I'm not sure the managers name but they are the morning manager on 4/15 at 5:30ish am, and were also super kind and accommodating. Come to this location, you will not be disappointed! :) Thank you all!!:)

Yelp
Favorite pour over spot!! Their coffee is delicious, and the beens are great. klaljfv oj

Yelp
Amazing people, coffee and atmosphere! They claim to be the "gayest in the city", but feel it's more "gayest in the country" for all people :). The atmosphere is fun and the music is amazing! I had the chance to meet Chris, Alvin and Weston - It's the first place I'll stop when I come back to visit! Thank you!!

Yelp
For me, this is the best Philz in the City. Not only is the coffee delicious and made with care, (I usually order a mocha Tesoro and it taste like it's been dripping for hours) but the staff is incredibly friendly and remembers you by name. I went back to school to become a NICU nurse and This Philz has gotten me through some crazy midterms and finals . You're amazing THANK YOUUUU

Yelp
Great location in the Castro. You order your drink with the barista, pay for your order, then wait for the barista to give you your order. Today I ordered a large, iced gingersnap. This drink is described on their menu as spices, sweet, and creamy. It is an additional $1.00. It had a subtle ginger taste and was a delightful little beverage. Pros: -Phil's has indoor and outdoor seating -there is free WiFi here -they have food and beverages -restroom available (the line to use it is constant) -friendly staff -LGBT friendly interior- pride flag, pictures of Harvey Milk, no hate signs, etc. Cons: -n/a
google avatar

Carmina R.

Yelp
Iced Oatmeal Coffee, Iced Gingersnap, Iced Mint Mojito... any of it; all of it! I'll take a medium sweet and creamy, light ice, and oooh if it's breakfast time, a sausage breakfast burrito with hot sauce because it is bomb. I love this location. The rainbow chalk art on the floor just makes me happy. Period. The store is welcoming and has so much Castro pride, and I love it all. Ordering online ahead of time is always the fastest and picking up your order is clear and efficient. Check out the table, labeled alphabetically by first name, and your in and out in seconds. & for our fur pals, they have dog treats front and center.

Yelp
after a long period of time where my friends constantly recommended that i try philz, i decided to actually go and try it out!! the atmosphere of the shop is absolutely lovely, lgbtq+ friendly shops make me feel so welcome and very affirmed, especially in the castro which is place i enjoy very much. it's also absolutely adorable how there is a glass jar filled with treats at the front, as it is a common occurrence for people to be walking their dogs in the castro. i saw that the iced mint mojito was a huge hit, so i went ahead and ordered a medium. i was pleasantly surprised with the amount of coffee that they filled my cup with, as it took me quite a while to finish the whole thing :) it was not too sweet, and the amount of mint was perfect for me. the consistency of the drink was more of a refresher as opposed to your typical iced coffee, which has more density. overall, i am very glad that i got the chance to listen to my friends' recommendations, they have good taste for sure. this will definitely be added onto my list of sf go-tos, as the iced mint mojito is something that i never knew i needed in my life up until this point!!

Alex H.

Yelp
Terrible terrible service. I was standing at the counter for 5 minutes and I said hello??? because the barista was deliberately ignoring me and having a conversation with her coworker instead of doing her job. Then she rudely directed me saying "you order up there" trying to make me look like an idiot. Whatever. I had better coffee at home with Folgers.
google avatar

J. L.

Yelp
The tea quality and customer service are excellent. The baristas actually make the effort to adjust the taste. Part of the seating is good but it is sometimes crowded and not leisurely. It's better to come when it is at half capacity. Philz has an on-site customer feedback input system, but it is not completely trustworthy, because a staff member tried to monitor customer feedback.
google avatar

Aar P.

Yelp
Amazing place. Amora was very welcoming. She took time explaining different coffees and suggested what's good for us based on our taste buds. And she was bang in target. Thank you for being an amazing host.
google avatar

Alan H.

Yelp
Great coffee shop in the Castro. It's one of a few coffee shops in the Castro. But, this location tends to have spotty service. They now prefer you to order ahead via the app due to covid. This commonly means that 30 minutes before closing they shut down online ordering and refuse to take your order in the store even when not busy. I've also gone during normal business hours and have seen the doors closed with no sign as to why closed. There are also about 30 signs, postings, and city notices on the door. It makes for a negative experience when you walk by. If you haven't been to Philz it's a unique experience. They only offer drip coffee and tea (and now cold brew). All their coffee are blends. Their signature coffee is made with heavy whipping cream and brown sugar. They also have other milks and sugars you can get with their coffee. I always find the addition of mint to be odd. But you can ask for them to remove this.
google avatar

Yelp
Philz Coffee was on my list after one of my favorite food bloggers posted about a mint mojito iced coffee that she got there while visiting SF. There are several locations around the city and one really close to our Airbnb in the Castro. My boyfriend and I stopped in while wandering around the neighborhood. I ordered the mint mojito and he got an iced Mocha Tesora. Each had different ways to customize them including the level of sweetness and creaminess. We both ordered them as-is and sat down to people watch while our drinks were being made. The girl at the counter taking orders and making drinks was really nice and patient which made for a great first experience. The menu is a bit overwhelming as it's pretty large and there's a lot of info there to take in. We got our drinks fairly quickly and let me tell you - they were amazing. The mint mojito sounded so strange to me but it was creamy, minty, and refreshing without being overly sweet. It was super cooling and perfect for the warm afternoon. The Mocha Tesora was like the best hot chocolate you've ever had - it seriously tasted like a melted chocolate bar with a bit of coffee. These aren't serious coffee drinks but they are really fun for a special treat. They also offer (of course) plenty of coffee and tea options.

Yelp
Where have you been all my life? I love this chain of coffee houses. If you see one, go try it. My personaly favorites are Philtered Soul, Julie's Ultimate, Jacob's Wonderbar, and Tesora. Every once in a while, I would get the Mint Mojito as well. Literally had Philz Coffee at least once each day I was in SF.
google avatar

Alan M.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, possibly had the best cold brew of my life. I was visiting SF a few days ago and I wanted to try Philz Coffee. I decided to visit the Castro location since it was the closest from my hotel. I was NOT disappointed. By far, one of the best cold brews I've ever had! I had the CB- mission style, it was smooth and sweet. Not at all bitter and pleasant to drink. I really enjoyed my first cup of Philz and this location was so welcoming and friendly. The ambiance is great and it feels like a relaxed coffee shop, not like Starbucks or other big chain coffees. Great spot to study as well. Will be returning again. Great job Philz!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Philz has been one of my all-time favorite coffee places but I don't know why they limit the order that you can get through the app it makes it very inconvenient. Not sure because he used to be Josef fuel local stores and now they became a bigger chain with more locations the quality definitely has gone down hills for the last five times that I try with my friends we all agree the quality is not what it used to be and we try and many different locations as well
google avatar

Paula Helen Z.

Yelp
The Castro Street store was closed today and there was no sign. The website said they were open. Apart from that, the seating is ridiculously uninviting and uncomfortable. Anyone with any disability who needs a real chair is out of luck.
google avatar

Tess C.

Yelp
Philz is the best. We happened upon it after walking through San Francisco as NY natives and the service was so friendly and welcoming. The barista made a delicious chai tea latte, although it isn't even on their menu, and we got a great seat out front. Wish they had these in the East!
google avatar

Tamie T.

Yelp
Philz!! Can't go wrong with the coffee .. the treats .. the staff ! I crave this place .. My favorite the Mojito !!
google avatar

Taifha B.

Yelp
The cutest little coffee shop I ever did see! Disclaimer: I didn't get any coffee, but my husband did and he really enjoyed it. But what he enjoyed more than the coffee was definitely the service. The baristas at Phliz Coffee really made my husband feel welcomed and like he was apart of their family. They patiently answered his questions, provided recommendations, and asked whether he liked what he ended up with, because if he didnt they'd give him a different drink FOR FREE! All coffee shops should aspire to be as inclusive, caring and hip as Phliz Coffee in the Castro District!
google avatar

Evangelina B.

Yelp
I love Philz coffee!!!! I've had the honor of meeting Phil himself and he's awesome! I was in the neighborhood with my friend and wanted to hit this place up for my fave, Mint Mojito! We came around 5:30 on a Wednesday and there wasnt a line, score! We were greeted by a nice barista and my friend asked for a recommendation since it was his first time. He ordered a Mocha and I went with my classic the Mint Mojito. Our orders came up quickly and my friend noticed his was hot instead of cold like he asked for. The barista said he'd fix it but my friend said it was fine and decided to drink it as is. Might want to double ask hot or cold to the customers just to make sure. Cute location with seating outside. I can imagine it gets very busy during the morning and late afternoon. Friendly service and quick. I'll be back!
google avatar

Moani H.

Yelp
The best coffee I've ever had and also unique flavors with quality taste. I would recommend everyone to try this, coffee-lover or not. I got the mojito iced coffee, and it was very refreshing. Tasted exactly like a mojito (without the alcohol) and some coffee--it sounds strange but if you love mojitos like I do, you'll love this coffee. They also had a pumpkin spice ice coffee and that was also delicious if you like pumpkin spice. I also tried my friends tavosa blend which is the most popular and the smoothness spoke for the quality of the coffee. The barista was very friendly and even saw me trying to get a good picture of my mint leaf on top of my coffee and offered me another that was prettier. The layout of how you order and pay is a little strange, you order first at the first counter you see then turn around and then pay at the other counter that has a few pastries you could choose to add on.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
Cute little Philz next door to One Medical. I like that the staff made sure all the names on the cups were facing towards the door so people are not turning other people's cups. Just go in and out. Super easy. Parking is not too bad in the morning. Definitely recommend ordering with the app ahead of time. Always ordering my favorite Iced Mint Mojito at Philz.
google avatar

Kaylee H.

Yelp
It makes me so sad to give Philz anything less than five stars as I still have dreams about their Mint Mojito. I just came out of a workout and my adrenaline was really pushing me to be adventurous with my choices so I decided to try the Gingersnap. Note to self exercise fogs my judgement as I did not like the Gingersnap. The coffee was sour and very watery. I assumed watery was natural with Philz as the mint mojito started off watery but got better with every sip. The Gingersnap did not .... The service here was great and made it very clear on how to keep the line going. The space is a bit more cramped but there is still a good amount of tables. The ambiance is more on the talkative side vs the get work done so keep that in mind.
google avatar

Yelp
I've hammered this place in the past. But for the last three times I've been here all the previous problems have vanished - which is why I came back. I've been greeted and invited to order. Payment was professional. (The product has always been fine). When I recently struggled with a lid, the barista helped me (the first time it happened several years ago the barista-applied lid spilled all over me). Yay. Good job Philz team. A special shout out regarding tea. It's VERY difficult to find straight chamomile tea brewed at coffeehouses and even some tea shops. The chains all have peach or citrus chamomile. Yuck. It's even chancy to get plain high quality black tea. But Philz has both.
google avatar

Asra K.

Yelp
This is a very unique coffee shop in the heart of the Castro district. My favorite thing is how fresh and unique the coffees are. I got the Turkish which comes with cardamom and fresh mint. The barista takes your order and makes everything bare-bones and then will add sweetener if needed. I like to keep mine clean and black so I can really taste the flavor. The line to order as well as the line to wait is a bit confusing as they run into each other. That I could use some organization. Coffee shop itself is very unique and interesting. There are photos of the employees n a unicorn themed bathroom painted purple. As well and Outside seating. They also have baked goods. But you have to make sure you order the baked goods from the register lady not the barista. Overall the coffee is outstanding. Definitely a must if you're in the Castro district.

Yelp
I've been to a couple of Philz locations but this is the most recent one I've been to. I've always been a big fan of their Mint Mojitos and is my go-to drink when I want to ~treat myself~ (they're to die for and everyone I know loves it) But a recent discovery has been their brewed coffee called "Philtered Soul." My friend got the drink and I was floored because it tastes like there is sweetener but the bean itself is so chocolatey that you get the flavor of it being slightly sweet drink with NO sugar added. Amazing. If you're a fan of black coffee but like a little bit of a sweet aroma I would 10/10 recommend this brew! I'm obsessed.
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Service and coffee is absolutly amazing here! So many unique coffee blends! And of course the Mint Mojito and kouign is a must try!! The mint mojito is an iced coffee with crushed mint in it and topped with a mint leaf. Such a refreshing drink and the mint is not too over powering - you can still taste the nice strong flavor of the coffee. The kouign was really nice and flakey and it was even better that they offered to have it heated up. Great place for a quick pick me up!
google avatar

Todor T.

Yelp
The perfect Coffee Shop, and the people that work here are very nice and cool. Have to visit, also the coffee is a lot better than other places
google avatar

Chloe L.

Yelp
The sign said that using the app to order wasn't mandatory. The employee at the counter said it was. I was the only customer in sight. Rather than download an app that I don't want or need, I just walked down the street to an independent coffee shop and got better coffee at a lower price. So I guess it's all well that ends well. Not coming back here, despite having patronized this Philz for years.
