Nine Spicy and Creamy Chai Drinks to Keep You Cozy in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Philz is really a San Francisco coffee wunderkind, and for the oldheads it can’t be beat. Baristas are willing to pack the filter with spices if you ask, in addition to the fresh mint and added cardamom. Alternative milks, including oat, are available upon request." - Paolo Bicchieri

Tour San Francisco’s Tenderloin Neighborhood Coffee Shops With Yemeni Coffee Expert Mokhtar Alkhanshali - Eater SF

"One hasn’t walked a San Francisco sidewalk until they’ve walked with a Philz mint mojito latte in hand. That’s Alkhanshali’s opinion, anyway, since Philz is a San Francisco institution; it was started in the Mission in 2003 by Phil Jaber, who moved from Palestine to the U.S. as a 12-year-old and built a coffee empire from the ground (and grinds) up. “It’s dessert,” Alkhanshali says of the icy drink. In comparison to some of the McCafe-esque lattes these days, this drink is a refreshing zip of sugar and caffeine for about $4.50, a creamy peppermint blur to make Cary Grant jealous." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Good service and very decent coffee. I specifically like the sitting areas, feels comfortable.

Used to love drinking Philz Iced Mint Mojito when I lived in San Francisco. Visiting the city close to a decade later, it’s still pretty amazing. Really enjoyed this delightful drink. Unfortunately, this location is located fairly close to some dangerous blocks within the city.

Google
I love Philz coffee but it takes forever it seems since it is all pour over coffees. But that is the charm of the place and why the coffee is so good in my opinion. Just don’t go there running late for work and expect a quick in and out experience.

Google
I am not sure where my initial review of Philz on Golden Gate is located but it's worth a second review. The location on Golden Gate is near my favorite sandwich spot (Saigon Sandwich). This location is always busy I think because of the Federal building. This location is fast, busy, and energetic. The staff members are all very friendly and customer service oriented. I love coffee shops at this capacity and vibrancy.

Google
I tried mint coffee at another location before, and it was bland and not tasty at all. But the mint coffee at this location was absolutely delicious! I finally realized, this is how mint coffee is supposed to taste. I was really impressed. The staff was friendly and made the coffee perfectly. Thanks to them, I’m leaving with a great memory.

Google
I came into this café not expecting much. But I ordered the rose coffee and wow. The floral taste was very strong but it was really GOOD that I thought maybe I should have ordered a medium and not a small. I’m looking forward to trying all the flavors there! The store is decorated beautifully and it’s nice and cozy. The store is very spacious and also includes working outlets and wifi! There are plenty of seats for the customers and is nicely air conditioned. The workers were all so very kind :) The only bad thing I would point out is that the bathroom is extremely dirty but other than that, this will be my go-to coffee spot! <3 (BETTER THAN PEET’S IMO)

Google
Tastes good, but it takes a long time to get your order. Plenty of seating. No pets allowed inside, but there are a few tables outside. They accept mobile order. Bathroom has a 5 minute limit.

Google
I really appreciated the staff and vibe of this Philz located near the Civic Center. The cafe was pretty full and there was always a line; the staff here did a really good job welcoming in customers and giving each customer awesome service at the register and at the hand-off. I will definitely be back! I ordered a dancing water iced coffee and it did not disappoint!

Yelp
so yummy, got the Americano with cream No sugar needed because it's so good and we love Gabriel! he was so kind and helpful. :)

Yelp
The last time I got Philz coffee was years ago, maybe like back in 2016? I ordered their classic mint mojito, the only drink I have ever tried and the coffee wasn't as good or high quality as I remembered. The drink also was poorly mixed: all the sugar was at the bottom so towards the end, the drink was very sweet. Overall, the drink was still decent and I would probably come back, but they have definitely started cutting corners to save on coffee now that it's more corporate. Customer service was good and the vibe was very chic and trendy.

Yelp
I just wanted to say thank you to the wonderful staff working today !! (7/10) they made us feel so welcomed! My dog loves attention and they took the time to come say Hi to him, he was super excited! I've came to this location before but today I was having a terrible morning and their kindness made my morning!
google avatar

Weijie W.

Yelp
Came here to do some work and ordered a small iced mint mojito the Philz way, which comes with cream and sugar. I ended up asking the barista if I could get some more cream and sugar and they were super friendly. The space is really big and there are bathrooms and plenty of outlets and seating. This is a really nice space to get some work done near Civic Center, but if you prefer a quieter space, maybe not ideal.

Yelp
TLDR: A Philz cup of coffee is a Philz cup of coffee no matter where you pick it up. Want your pumpkin spice blahblahblah? Won't get it here :P Philz is not for everyone, but if you appreciate selecting your own beans, Philz just might be for you. Great service, and there's a variety of seating arrangements (tables, couches, arm chairs, high tops). I'd say this location has more flavor than other Philz I've visited, especially Philz in places like LA and Chicago. Music can be loud at times (overhead music, people in & out), so bring your own head phones. Longer: This is my neighborhood Philz, and I've lived in this hood for 3 years now. Lately, I've been making my coffee at home, but not so long ago, I spent wayyy too much money here (lol), and this was my non-alcoholic Cheer's beverage spot. Staff are efficient and usually stay heads down when on barista duty -- don't take it personally! (: They're busting ass to get hella coffees out. When I bring my cat in (on my shoulder) the staff perks up and are extra hella friendly xD Even though this Philz location is on the edge of the TL on one of the most notorious TL streets, I have seen nothing but mild af shenanigans over the hundreds of times I've visited. Plus, there's an Urban Alchemy team member regularly stationed on the corner in front who seem to act as security, of sorts. So, if you're nearby and craving Philz, don't let the location keep you away.

Yelp
I can't visit SF without grabbing the Iced Mint Mojito Coffee--it's absolutely delicious! The mint adds a refreshing burst that perfectly balances the bold coffee flavor. The creaminess makes it smooth and easy to sip, while the fresh mint leaves elevate the whole experience. Highly recommend trying this if you're a coffee lover looking for something unique! Please open some locations in Texas!

Yelp
We made a special trip to get some Philz coffee as my husband's family loves their coffee. The walk from union square through the Tenderloin was interesting as we passed by some rough patches of San Francisco but arrived at Philz safe and sound. The coffee shop was quite spacious, with a lot of room for people to roam. There was art on the walls and this location has many mismatching chairs and a sofa for people to lounge. The cashier took our order quickly and I ordered a hot Tesora with light cream and no sugar. The coffee was not strong; it was rather mild with a pleasant hint of caramel to it. It went well with a hot breakfast burrito which made for a good breakfast. Overall, I liked Philz coffee and would visit whenever I'm in the Bay Area.

Yelp
Stopped by Friday morning for my (first) cup of coffee of the day. It was my first time trying Philz Coffee and it did not disappoint. The person behind the counter was very friendly, helpful, and patient while I chose which Philz classic to try. We tried the Mint Mojito, which they are known for, and a Honey Haze. The Minto Mojito was very unique and unlike any coffee I've had before. It was refreshing and had a great balance between flavors of coffee and mint. The Honey Haze was super tasty as well, and perfect for if you like honey. Also, something that was cool is at this location, they had a thing where you could buy a cup of coffee "for the community," allowing anyone to grab a ticket and get a free cup of coffee. I thought that was a really cool idea. Overall, great coffee and vibes and definitely a coffee spot that should be checked out in SF.

Yelp
I stopped by Philz Coffee on Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco and ordered a Café Mocha. Tesoro It was delicious, as always--Philz never disappoints. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax. Plus, the service was excellent, adding to the great overall experience. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area! Brooklyn the Barista was excellent!

Yelp
I tried the mint mojito coffee ($5)! You can customize the creaminess and the sweetness level. I kept it medium creamy but lowered the sweetness level. The mint complements the coffee well! They also include actual mint leaves! Service was fast. I got my drink within a few minutes.

Yelp
TooGoodToGo is an app where you can order a mystery bag of baked goods for half the price (the day before) to pick up at the end of each business day. I don't drink coffee, but I'm a big fan of pastries. This was my first time ordering from Philz, so I was beyond excited to see what I was going to get. The pick up time was between 4:30-5:00pm, and the place was practically empty when I arrived 20 minutes before 5pm. When I told the staff I was here for TooGoodToGo, he immediately placed a variety of different pastries into the bag. I opened the bag when I got home and saw that I got 3 muffins and an almond croissant. They were all delicious, especially after you place them in the toaster! For less than $5, this is definitely a steal! I will definitely be back for more!!!

Yelp
This Philz is down the street from our favorite bakery, Arsicault. However the coffee there is not great so we stop by Philz first. The mocha tesoro is one of the best coffee drinks I have ever tasted. The service here is always great. If your drink isn't perfect they will fix it.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, many outlets, bathroom was clean ( you need to buy something for the code), music is a bit loud, lots of natural light, free wifi. Got a Iced Mint Mojito, lots of mint and very yummy (sweet and creamy ofc)
google avatar

Sheila C.

Yelp
This was my first time here and the coffee was made perfect I got a honey and oat milk coffee I'm not a fan of oat milk but this was so good. I got some plant based sandwich thing I forgot the name of it in not really a fan of it the flavor was not my favorite but the place has good customer service . This place was not super clean I actually didn't see a staff come and clean the tables . Half the time the staff was not behind the counter. There is some type of code on the bathroom that you're supposed to ask the staff for . They never gave me the code and I was drinking water so I ended up leaving. There is free water at the front at the cashier.

Yelp
I love this Philz location!!! The employees are amazing and always light up my day with their attitudes and coffee of course!!! major shoutout to Aianna, Danyo, and Aaron for brightening up my mornings :,)
google avatar

Sherene H.

Yelp
Love philz! It's the only coffee I drink every single morning, and I always order bags of whole bean coffee: philtered soul. My go to drink in store is mint mojito! Get it extra creamy. I love that the customer service is on it. When completing my drink the barista asks if there is anything she could do to adjust the taste.

Malcolm R.

Yelp
ABSOLUTE BEST PHILZ BY FAR FROM TL TO EAST BAY, Nicest baristas and the drinks are always on point Aianna, Danyo, & Aaron are the best baristas ever
google avatar

Yelp
Still a favorite! Makes my day so much better any time I can have some Philz. Great drink, good service, and a nice place to hangout for a bit. Besos.
google avatar

Yelp
Location, location. We need coffee everywhere, right? It's clean enough and the coffee was hot. The dude taking orders was busy or indifferent maybe both but the barista's were super nice. The 3 stars are for a cup of black pour over only which was just that. Good but not memorable. Last words...if I'm their.
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
Upset about the first time experience. I guess they don't have espresso? Yet they are a coffee shop? I ended up getting their mojito drink. I was upset about that. The service was ok, the lady had an attitude here though. The vibe was alright. Probably won't come back as they don't have espresso or drip coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Between the music, street noise and chatter this is not the most quiet place to work but the excellent Tesora coffee helps make up for it. I appreciate the many outlets they offer to their customers & all the local art over every wall. This Philz draws a long line very quickly however the staff remain friendly and hospitable despite the spikes. Strong security and police presence provides additional feeling of safety despite this being a very inner city neighborhood. Noted for great craft coffee and easy outlet access

Yelp
Coffee was fine, it is a big coffee shop. I did not try any food. The service was good.

Yelp
Great spot to grab coffee from when visiting passport office as it's right across the street as well. Parking isn't the best tho cuz u gotta look for street parking with a meter if weekday parking. Got the tesora coffee which was great and smooth flavor along with a toasted butter croissant. Staff was courteous , there is also an online order option since saw quite a few ppl just walking in and picking up their orders. The environment which relaxed and there's plenty of seating available as well
google avatar

Yelp
The customer service at this Civic Center location on Golden Gate Avenue is consistently outstanding (as if it is my very own Philz , or at least they make me feel that way). They even have an awesome little lending library (take a book, leave a book). The All Star staff members deserve a full rack of Stars.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
Nice tables, splendid and kind service, good wifi. But their pastries are just bad, and the flavor of the coffee, while interesting (iced coffee rose), lacked flavor.

Michael Vincent R.

Yelp
15 minutes for an unwarmed blueberry muffin and small coffee. Coffee is great, but the service is extremely slow. What a bunner.
google avatar

Guisela L.

Yelp
Doordash and Philz are a fail on this. I understand that Philz tried to send a message but I mean there's still a disconnect here. Doordash doesnt even give any refunds even if you don't receive your order. And unfortunately when ordering the stock wasn't accurate at time of order. Just a whole bunch of missteps and neither side did anything to really fix the problem. Bummer.
google avatar

Yelp
Recommend trying Iced Mint Mojito @philzcoffee is a coffee shop in #sanfrancisco They have some pretty creative drinks Iced Mint Mojito - very refreshing some how it works Honey Haze Ice Coffee Rosé Mocha Tesora The staffs are friendly. Ambiance differ from shop to shop depending on location.
google avatar

Ayham D.

Yelp
Bitter, watery, and over roasted. I wish I could say good things about this Philz but I'm hard pressed. My friend and I both were disappointed in our drinks. I had the honey haze and he a tesoro (medium roast) made into a latte. After accepting the order they told him that they don't make lattes, and refused to make a new drink. That's not the kind of service I'm used to at Philz. So we both walked out with unsatisfactory drinks and headed over to another local coffee shop to get our morning fix.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The coffee tastes great, I always enjoy enjoying coffee here, it can be said that this is the place with the best coffee in the world. love it
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Philz is a local coffee shop and their hook is that they make every cup of coffee or tea to order - grinding beans or selecting the proper tea leaves. I was a little disappointed at the scarcity of food items available, however. I settled for a granola bar. The Tantalizing Turkish coffee was just okay but my wife enjoyed her tea. While I think they are trying hard to look a little funky the overall vibe I got was that the place looked a little cluttered and disjointed.
google avatar

Jem T.

Yelp
Love this location. It can get pretty busy in the mornings, but the wait is usually 10-15 minutes which isn't bad for an exceptional cup of coffee. The staff is very attentive and welcoming and they definitely acknowledge you as soon as you walk in. If you have the Philz App, I would definitely recommend ordering ahead when possible as the mobile orders can have take a bit of time too.
google avatar

Gianna E.

Yelp
I love, love, loved my most recent experience here! I had never been to Philz Coffee before, and was a little confused ordering the Mocha Tesora and the Iced Gingersnap, but the cashier couldn't have been more polite about it! I didn't catch his name, but he was wearing a The Doors L.A. Woman shirt and explained drinks don't come automatically with milk, and it was through him I learned they have quite a lot of non-dairy milk options! The Mocha Tesora was so, so good! I've had quite a few mocha's over the years, with none really ever standing out, but the one from Philz was stellar! My Iced Gingersnap with non-fat milk was definitely unique, quite herbal in taste, and I think next time I would get medium or extra on the milk, but I loved the cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove spices in this! I've had coffee drinks that are gritty in the aftertaste due to the spices in them, and this one managed to not be at all! Between the cold brew and the herbal spices, the Iced Gingersnap I ordered was definitely the wake-up call I needed that morning. My favorite aspect of Philz is how customizable the drinks can be, and all the coffee blends! I loved the inside of this location, and I look forward to downloading the app and trying the Iced Mint Mojito whenever I'm in the area.

Zachary R.

Yelp
I've warmed to Philz over the years! Their seasonal drinks are often better than their normal menu - highly recommend experimenting. Service can be a bit slow, but that's because the coffees are (all?) pour over style which takes time to make. I'd love to see them add espresso and espresso-based drinks to the menu. I also love that you can order ahead in the app - makes the process much more efficient. Music is typically good (soulful, eclectic, skews younger) but can be loud, making this a not-always-great work space. WiFi fairly reliable. Overall I'm a fan ^_^

Jesus C.

Yelp
I love philz but at this location every time i ask for light ice i get extra. Great coffee though
google avatar

Jill O.

Yelp
Stopped in Philz Coffee to buy a cup and relax for a bit. Used to go to Philz when I lived in East Bay and recall liking the Mint Mojito a lot! Today got a cup of Luca's unplugged decaf. Smooth to make me feel warm inside. Space is open and lots of big glass windows to take in all the outside activity going on. Ample spots to plop one self down to chill: high tables, long table, sofa, club chairs, counter tops by pillar, and just regular tables. There are lots of seating options! Not too much traffic, but not dead. Just good flow of customers for good energy.
google avatar

Sylvia S.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and great breakfast, what's not to like? I tried their Unity special, basically a cold brew with mint and cinnamon.. So yummy! I also highly recommend their plant powered sandwich. It is possibly my favorite breakfast sandwich ever, so flavorful and nice textures. (btw I am definitely not vegan so give it a try regardless of your food tastes)
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
If you were once an early Philz coffee drinker, you'd be highly disappointed with what they taste like now. There use to be over 20 different types of coffee to choose from but it now narrows down to only 10-11. The Greater Alarm was my absolute favorite and is now gone forever. So is the consistency. I've gotten two different types of coffee in two different locations in the last 2 days. One was extremely hot where I couldn't even drink it til I got home, the other was just warm enough. But after finishing both cups on both days I was able to take an afternoon nap after drinking the coffee which I find very very strange.
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
Service is slow as molasses, and the store is in serious need of refurbishment. The furniture is dirty and worn out. Should've gone to a Starbucks.

Money A.

Yelp
Went here after seeing it recommended. Coffee was good. It has been a while since I last went but would consider this as a street tier level coffee. Grab a cup along the way in the bustle of life.
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
The quality of this location is falling fast. I live fairly close so I've been able to watch the change. Go to any other coffee place and maybe it's not too hot but probably it'll burn your tongue. So when my order was too hot that was a major red flag. It's never happened before after years of going many Philz. The other problem is the obvious proximity to Tenderloin. They hired door security but Philz is losing the battle. While you enjoy your $5 coffee you can peer out the large windows to view a man defecating on the sidewalk. In full view of everyone, dropped pants, big standing squat. There were cops inside Philz also observing this. Not some anomaly, there's always a large crowd of people across the street. This location won't be open much longer.
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
mint mojito was delicious but it would have tasted better if the employees attitude was better. Ever order something and the person's attitude made it worst? this was it. First time in and I didnt know if I should pay first or order first. To pay, its to the right but the roped line was on the left. I stood in line and waited, the baritas never smile and seemed over worked. They had only been open for an hour at that point. Whatever I ordered and went on my way. Coffee was great
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Never been to a Philz before, friend of mine dragged me in. I'm not really a fancy coffee guy, usually just do black coffee. This was pretty damn good, I couldn't tell you what I got because my friend spent nearly 10 minutes ordering so I just said get me the same thing. It was iced black coffee, sweet but not too sweet, really great bold flavors. I'm itching for another one, if only I knew what to order.

Steve P.

Yelp
OK. This is not only the best coffee I've ever had, but I'm clutching my chest and trying to avoid trimming my lawn with a pair of nail clippers. This is the real deal. Amazing coffee. Strong coffee. This flavor is amazing. And the caffeine content is a super zing. I've never had anything like this. Totally 5 stars.
google avatar

Bella J.

Yelp
This place is very cool, chill and on high traffic area. The coffee is good, baristas are nice, people are fun and the windows are large and nice to look outside while working on your laptop. The bathroom situation is a bit tough though, if you are in the area, good spot to do some reading and/or catch up on emails.
google avatar

Hao B.

Yelp
3/15 - Zez was amazing this morning, ordered my drink & she checked in on me to check whether I wanted Hot or Ice, said my name right so I was already impressed. Her customer service was awesome & she was friendly and extremely helpful when my coworker ordered his drink at the wrong location but she went out of her way to make that drink. She was outstanding and definitely stood out as I did have poorer experience from other staff before. Thanks Zez!!!
google avatar

Rose S.

Yelp
I've heard really great things about Philz Coffee from Instagram and relatives I know that live in California. I'm not much of a coffee connoisseur but I do love a good cup of delicious hot or iced coffee. They have different types of brews from pour over, French press, espressos and drips. I wasn't really a fan of what I ordered. I got the ambrosia coffee which is under their bright and light. It's sweet with fresh berry and honey notes. I thought it was going to be on the sweeter side but it was way too strong for me. For someone that loves strong coffee that's not on the sweeter side this is probably for you. Although I didn't order something that I enjoyed I would still go back and order something different because the quality of the coffee is still amazing.

Yessenia C.

Yelp
Update on the hours! Philz is now open inside 7 days a week, Mon-Fri 6:30am-2pm, Sat-Sun 8am-2pm. Seating is available along with outlets to charge your devices, a restroom and WIFI. I know people don't always have good things to say about this side of town but the Alchemy Academy is doing a great job at keeping the hustling people trying to survive away from Philz Coffee. I live right down the street and nothing like a morning walk to grab a house roasted coffee that does the trick to wake you up. Is it a bit pricey? No more then the cost of Starbucks. Is it worth it? I think so. I urge you to try the Tesora which is their house coffee or any of the coffees for that matter. Tell a barista exactly what you want or are looking for and they'll make/find the perfect drink for you. They also offer almond and soy milk at no extra cost. Forgot to mention there's also a Philz Coffee app if you're in a hurry or just want to order ahead.
