The Best Restaurants in Dinkytown, Near the University of Minnesota Campus | Eater Twin Cities

"Pho Mai is a great spot for all kinds of Vietnamese food: wonton egg noodle soup, banh mi, bun dac biet with springy rice noodles. But in the winter, it’s hard to beat the pho. Pho Mai’s hearty seafood pho combines shrimp, squid, crab, and fish balls — or keep things simple with the pho tai, made with tender sheets of lean beef. 3/22/25 - Wife and I came here for lunch after the bell museum and walker art museum was on the way. When we got here, there were a few open tables, not a full house yet, but servers looked really busy, cleaning tables, running around serving food, taking orders. We got seated right away, but with how busy server were, we didn’t get our food order for around 10-15 minutes. After waiting around during that time, more and more people filled the restaurant and it is now a full house. We both order pho dac biet and I also order a Vietnamese coffee and bahn mi to go. It seems like 1 person was cooking in the back as it took awhile for us to get our food. A family of 3 came in after us got their pho first, but took awhile for the 3rd person to get their rice platter. After a while we finally got our pho. The pho was good, broth had a good meat/sweet flavor, meat tasted good, not the best pho I’ve had but better than most. The only sauce condiment on the table are siracha and hoisin sauce, not sure if they have more stuff in the back, we didn’t ask. We ate quick and left as we only had an hour on the meter. Overall good food, service was a bit slow, but they were apologetic. Maybe next time I’ll go try the one in Asia mall to try it out.

Google
we ordered pho, lo mein, egg rolls and cream cheese wontons for takeout and it was delicious! my favorite pho i’ve ever had. their chicken option is awesome. some of the best egg rolls i’ve ever had, they’re HUGE! highly recommend them and the employees are very nice!

Google
A nice little spot! I ordered mi kho, and the fried chicken was excellent. Flavorful and crunchy! The shrimp wonton was also nice and crisp. My favorite part was the dark meat sauce on the side to drizzle over. It was very rich with umami! There is cilantro in both the noodles and broth, though it isn't listed on the menu, so if you're cursed with the cilantro soap gene like I am, you'll have to request it without. The decor is minimalist modern, but everything's clean and service is very fast. I'll definitely come again sometime.

Google
Ordered the Mi Kho noodle soup. The soup was a bit cold so kinda ruined the meal. Pork eggrolls were a bit undercooked.

Google
I ordered the pho thit and cream cheese wontons and they came out amazingly. We asked for chili oil as well and they brought out the best flavored chili oil we have had at any restaurant. I'd go back here again because the food was of excellent quality. The service was also fantastic and patient while we were trying to find out what to order. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!

Google
My wife & I got take-out/Doordash from here for lunch. We each got the pho chin (brisket). I will say… takeout, definitely not ideal. Because the rice noodles aren’t really cooked, you rely on the heat of the broth to cook them, but if it’s delivered or picked up by you, it won’t be hot enough to cook the noodles by the time you get home to eat it… so we ended up eating some pretty stiff noodles. Other than that, the broth was pretty good and the brisket was too. There wasn’t a ton of meat in there so it was kind of overpowered by the onions, but the flavor was pretty good. My wife has been here before in-person and said she loved it, so I think the take out format was the issue. We also ordered the shrimp spring rolls which were good. I’m not a huge fan of the sauce that came with it, it was a bit sweet for me, but the roll was really good. I’d be willing to try this place again, but I’d definitely go to the restaurant.

Google
Great option for pho! Located in a university town so it was very busy at 8PM on a Sunday. Very flavourful broth. I ordered a small size and it came with a lot of meat. The street out front is under construction (September 2024) so you will have to find parking on other side streets so be warned!

Google
I absolutely LOVE this place! Their pho is so good. Their egg rolls and spring rolls are delicious. The sauces to go with them are as well. My kids and I all loved their sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. Great customer service and very decent prices. This was the first place I tried pho and have been in love since. I’m excited to visit more and try other dishes.

Yelp
HATE the street parking. It is super busy and there's no where to park. LOVE the pho. Broth taste so good. We ordered spring roll and eggroll. Also tasted fresh and good.
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
Service was pretty fast as it wasn't busy when we were there. We liked the food (not our favorite Pho in the twin cities but it was good) and the Vietnamese Coffee tasted great. The inside was a bit cramped and smaller than expected. Parking can also be an issue due to the area. Overall a nice option for food if you're in the area but not a place to travel to just for the food.

Yelp
One of my go to spots for Vietnamese food. I had only visited the location that is in the Asian Mall but decided to check this location out. I got the rice platter dish and everything was so good. The spring rolls were fresh and had a crispy layer in it which was nice. The Banhmi was so good with the egg. If you like Vietnamese food, I would definitely try this place out!

Yelp
Went during lunch time during the week They were busy and efficient- they know the drill We went to the counter to order/ pay Found a table and our food order came shortly after Wait staff friendly and polite I mentioned they were busy but it wasn't loud like some places people were to busy eating the delicious hot food ! Will be back !
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Service was absolutely excellent. Staff was attentive and friendly. Plus, the food came out really fast. However, my combination beef pho was only moderately hot temp wise I'm guessing because there wasn't enough room in the small bowl for the hot broth and it was a little oiler and sweeter in flavor than I'm used to. I did love their fried Vietnamese egg rolls. Crispy deliciousness!

Yelp
Like coming together with a long lost friend. That is what my taste buds said when I tasted this restaurant's pho. Clean restaurant . Reasonably priced and delicious. Close walk from our hotel and the football stadium Edit: The morning after has me thinking even more. Normally in the evening and I night I get "pho thirst". If you have had pho you know what I mean. However this pho did not leave my mouth dry as a desert at night. I've had tons of beef pho throughout Chicago and in LA, Denver, Dallas, Orlando. This could be the best pho in all of America.

Victoria C.

Yelp
Best pho and banh mi so yummy! Just hate the street parking so I order delivery instead but when I do eat there the service is fast!
google avatar

Susie W.

Yelp
Another great Vietnamese spot in the twin cities! We love to come here for their $5 pho fridays (with an order of an app) and order their nem nuong spring rolls. Service and ambiance is great as well! Parking is metered street parking.

Yelp
Can never go wrong with Pho Mai, whether in Dinkytown or at the Asia Mall in Eden Prarie. Craving for pho last night led me to pick up takeout in Dinkytown. Ordered pho tofu and veggie spring rolls with extra peanut sauce. Broth was separate from the rice noodles and tofu so it wouldn't get soggy. Definitely hit the spot. Loved the two veggie spring rolls and peanut sauce. Another favorite of mine. Only downside is that I had to call my order in. The online order app kept rejecting four different credit cards I use all the time. Was very frustrating. Thankfully was hungry enough to call it in. Technology is not always convenient.

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday hoping to get pho 30 minutes before they closed. Walked in at 8:30 they told me that dining in and take out was closed, was so sad I walked 30 minutes from my apartment. ): so sad, I'm so hungry, not honorable to the hours posted online AND THE DOOR! Door said closes at 9, walked in 8:30, server said closed. So sad...

Yelp
...A little bird told me that this restaurant is owned and managed by the same people as MT Noodles near Maple Grove... I have never eaten in person at this establishment, although I have ordered delivery and take out many times. I have ordered the pho daq biet without tripe, and banh mi cold cuts (Classic), add grilled pork, add extra pate and heavy on special mayo, extra jalapenos for spice to balance out the umami savory pork, pate and mayo. OMG. and the fresh, crisp cucumbers, jalapenos (with some ribs and seed for actual spice) and veggies. My few critiques are simply that an option for jalapenos that are cut and added for actual spice that is desired (aka with some seeds and white ribs)l to cater to those who like more natural spice from peppers, and open a location closer to the easter suburbs!! Please? On my tour of banh mi, I would say this is number...3-4...

Yelp
Looking at the menu, it is just a regular Vietnamese restaurant; pho, noodle salad, fried rice, rice platter. Don't let this fool you. The food is super good. I have rice platter with grilled pork; the pork is super soft and tasty. The grilled pork and egg roll noodle salad is tasty as well. Didn't try any of their drinks since we are going for a boba across the street. They just opened another Pho Mai by Asia Mall if that place is closer to you then this one in UofM area.

Yelp
10/10 - the food is never disappoints. The service was fast and the food was delicious. One thing I love about Pho Mai on Friday is their $5 pho; order any entree and add a small bowl of pho for $5. The pho broth was flavorful, up to a point that I didn't have to add any condiments. The rice platter was A+!! The grilled pork was well seasoned and not too dry, there was more meat than rice... which is a good problem to have. I've been here 3 times so far, and I would not hesitate to go back again to try other dishes on their menu. Follow me @ hweedafoodie for more reviews!!

Yelp
So delicious! I'm seriously obsessed with the pho from here. The house special pho and shrimp spring rolls are my go to order! The pho broth is clean but still flavorful and there all the condiments I need if I want to spice it up- like add chill oil (they even have the option to add this for go to orders). I also found the packing for to go orders to be very well packed and thoughtful. The spring rolls here are definitely unique because most restaurants don't put chives and the crunchy fried eggroll wrapper inside the spring rolls like they do here at Pho Mai which I love! Also the house made peanut dripping sauce that goes with the spring rolls are so good! Even if the prices are a bit higher than other pho restaurants in St. Paul, I think it's pretty average pricing for pho in Minneapolis and worth it! I usually pick up my order or do DoorDash delivery but I believe it is just metered parking as it is in Dinkytown.

Yelp
If you're in the area and tired of looking for somewhere else to eat, the food is ok. Kind of expensive for what you get. My main complaint is that a lot of things are too sweet. Not sure why they do that. Also if you've never been there: There's metered parking and, when you're done eating, you go up to the register to pay (they don't bring it to you).
google avatar

Yelp
First time here. Service was quick and the noodles soups were flavorful with distinct tastes for each of the different soups were ordered: pho and wonton noodles soup. The spring rolls were tasty and the cream cheese wontons were crispy and full of cream cheese. Prices were a little higher than most Vietnamese restaurants in town that we have been frequenting. It was close to where we were and satisfied our cravings. Looking forward to trying them out when the Asia Mall opens in Eden Prairie. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Yelp
Love the consistent accuracy from this place. The food is amazing whether you dine-in or order take out (which is rare for deliveries). The inside is bright and lively. I order from here all the time, they never mess up my order so I trust them a lot haha. They pack banh-mi's with the condiments all separate, (which I appreciate!!!!!!!) so nothing gets soggy. Same with the pho. The egg rolls are so fire too. Love love love.

Annabel M.

Yelp
Affordable and delicious pho the spot on an icy-rain Minnesota day! The small was plenty for me.
google avatar

Molly A.

Yelp
Great pho and egg rolls at a great price. Should have gotten the small pho though as that would have sufficed. Other menu items looked good too - worth a return trip if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Amie D.

Yelp
I've had pho three times and all from Pho Mai and the two time I had it was my best experience but today still hit the spot. I wished it was spicier though, even with the chili oil it still had a sweet flavor to it. I also got the veggie egg rolls and it didn't quite deliver as I expect it to be. Thankfully my coworker liked it enough to take the leftovers; the size of the rolls are huge fyi. Food came out fast and my lean beef were thicker than I thought it'll be. All in all, taste was good and craving satisfied. The vibe was casual lunch hour.

Jordan K.

Yelp
Amazing food and top tier service. Servers are super attentive and everything is well managed. The pho is absolutely phenomenal and the rice platters have generous portions of delicious meat. Terrific overall experience, would highly recommend !!
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is absolutely wonderful!! I would recommend this place 100x if I could. Staff are very nice and also accommodating.

Yelp
This is my second time here. The first time I went on Thursday and it was very mid compared to other Pho places that I've grown to love. I think what bothered me the most was the temperature of the food wasn't at its peak. We all know super super hot Pho is the best. Fast forward to this week, I was looking for something Quico and close and decided to go back once more. This experience was far better than the last time!! I was super happy with the second visit. I even tried the pork sausage spring rolls, which were really good! A little pricey but delicious. It come with a sauce that I just wish had been spicy.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in Dinkytown to try their Pho and wow was it delicious. The grilled beef short rib is a must try as well, and it was cooked to perfection! Being in Dinkytown, make sure to plan ahead with the parking as it can get tricky. The service here was stellar, and it was a great environment as well. Perfect for a quick, delicious meal!

Yelp
I want to thank Pho Mai for their kindness and professionalism for a horrible Postmates error. Despite the food preparer's notes that my order came with two bags, neither the driver or the restaurant cared to notice that note. When I received only one bag, and started driving to pick up the other half, the restaurant called back and said they were closed and the food had already been taken home by employees. I was livid that no one would care that I paid for the other bag and might be trying to figure out how to be compensated. The manager for that night carefully listened to me rant and complain my anger and frustrations. She contacted her boss and her made sure to refund me in a timely matter. Thank you guys for being helpful and respectful of my money.

Yelp
Will definitely continue exploring their menu. The House Special Pho is phenomenal with a good balance between sweet and saltiness. Spring roll is crunchy and chunky and with that peanut sauce, its an amazing combo
google avatar

Thuta A.

Yelp
Poor service! They only gave very little beansprout for 2 Pho bowls so we asked for more and they replied that they were OUT OF IT. It was only 7:20pm at a Pho place and I thought it didn't make sense but we let it go. And then not even a few minutes later, they brought more sprouts for different customers who were just sitting next to us. We felt very bad and disrespected. We talked with the sever girl when we were about to leave and she didn't even give a good explanation and just went off.
google avatar

Chassidie L.

Yelp
Another pho place I have added to my list! After trying this place, I can humbly say I have been to over 30 pho places. At first, I was originally going to give this place a 4/5 since it tasted like most pho places, but then I thought about it. There was nothing wrong about this place. The pho was delicious, the portion sizes were great, they had fair pricing, there was great costumer service, and the egg rolls were huge. The pho tasted how all good pho should. Pho is a very hard thing to mess up, and this place nailed it! Tastes just how my grandma makes it! I will definitely be coming back whenever I get a pho craving. Also, a thing to note here is that their portion sizes can be HUGE. The pho's come in small, medium, or large. When they say large, they mean like SUPERSIZE. The bowl is amazingly big haha. Tip: $5 pho on Fridays
google avatar

Claire B.

Yelp
I ordered delivery through Grub Hub and WOW!! The BEST pork Bahn Mi with the pickled veggies seperated so to not make the roll soggy. The tastiest grilled meat I've ever had in a sandwich. Noe about those Egg Rolls, Amazing!! Even in a delivery they were the crispiest rolls and packed with flavor and huge as well! This will be a regular on my rotation from now on.

Mrs H.

Yelp
I was in town from Texas due to my son being in a traumatic auto accident. I ordered food from this restaurant through Ubereats for four persons. Myself and another family member became violently ill after consuming our food from this establishment. Diarrhea, nausea, extreme dizziness, elevated blood pressure, etc. We soon realized that we were suffering from food poisoning! It took three days to start feeling better. I thank God that my son who was hospitalized did not get ill as well, because that would have REALLY been horrible! Have yet to hear back from the owners.
google avatar

Treena C.

Yelp
Pho Mai was fantastic last night. Make sure you are hungry because they do not mess around with portion sizes. I had the rice noodle dish and it was filled with flavor. Add in their quick, responsive service and this is a great lunch or dinner spot. We ordered extra egg rolls which we shouldn't have, as they are larger than most I am used to. Everything was fresh and the restaurant was very clean.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
I ordered dinner here last night through Uber Eats. Food was great, Uber Eats is a sad story for another day! I had a very tasty Bun Dac Biet with grilled pork, shrimp and crunchy egg roll. Really delicious and full of great flavors. They said a crunchy egg roll and even with delayed delivery (see what I did there Uber Eats!), it was still crunchy cold! It was good all the way to the end! Also got a Bahn Mi Thit Heo which was pork but didn't have traditional pate on it, that I can tell. More about that after I eat it for lunch today!
google avatar

Mo S.

Yelp
Known for their delicious Vietnamese Cuisine such as Pho, Com & Banh Mi, @phomaimn serves up some of my favorite appetizers like these delicious Wings. The Wings were crispy and flavorful. I paired them up with The Shrimp Spring rolls! Definitely check out them out if you're in the Dinkytown area of Minneapolis! * Sweet Chili Chicken Wings * Shrimp Spring rolls

Paul N.

Yelp
Really friendly staff, really good pho, and great egg rolls. Cool vibe inside. I can't wait to go back!

Cheryl O.

Yelp
I stumbled across this place on Uber Eats and so glad I did. Best eggrolls in the city in our opinion. We had eggrolls, wontons, bahn mi, bun with beef. Usually when we get eggrolls by the time they arrive they are sad and greasy but these were still super crisp and delicious. The wontons are huge and generously filled with a seasoned cream cheese. The bun, is a noodle salad and I ordered it with beef. I was full from the wontons and egg rolls so I didn't eat my bun that night. Or the next night. But I took it out tonight and two days later it is still fresh and the veggies still crisp and it's so, so yummy and healthy. My ONLY complaint was the amount of beef in the bun. I would have liked a larger portion of the beef but you can always order extra and next time that's what I'll do. Great food. I can't wait to try everything.

Peter V.

Yelp
This going to get some simps, but imho hands down the best pho in the cities - St. Paul/Minneapolis. My first experience was alright due to waitress taking roughly 10min to take our order, but other than that, the pho broth was flavorful and the pho itself was unforgettable. I've gone back a few times and it don't miss. If only parking was a bit better... anyways, 10/10 recommend Dac biet!
google avatar

Laura O.

Yelp
Went to Tiger Sugar and this place was right across the street so we did an online curbside order. First time trying this place and it was great but I am not one for spicy things so we ordered the sandwiches without the jalapeños as shown on the receipt but there were jalapeños and even just the seeds made one of the best Bahn Mi sandwiches I have ever ordered not the #1 best. The pork was done to perfection and the egg rolls were nice and crunchy and the Rice noodles, scallions, cucumbers and pickled daikon /carrots, beans sprout and cilantro were fresh and super flavorful. If they would have not added the jalepeno's I would have given this place 5 stars.

Patrick R.

Yelp
We keep coming back for takeout. Pho is outstanding. Egg rolls are bomb AND the HOT & SPICY CHICKEN IS OUTSTANDING
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
Partner and I went to this place during lunch (1:30pm) and we had their bahn mi and egg roll rice noodle salad. It was AMAZING! The size for the price was great! Will be coming here again. Also, the waiter was very nice. :)

Yelp
More often than not, I always get an urge to satisfy my pho cravings, even on a hot day. I went to visit the hubby in MPLS, MN and this was one of those days. Located near the University of Minnesota, Pho Mai Dinkytown was just just the spot! I got the usual suspects. First on the line-up as appetizers was the Shrimp Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce. I always ask for Nước Chấm because I love that salty and sweet compliment to the fresh vegetables and grilled shrimp. For our entrees, the hubby got the Grilled Pork Bahn Mi. The bread was definitely fresh, crispy and yet fluffy on the inside. The pork was marinated well with flavors of lemon grass and soy. The pickled vegetables in the sandwich had a nice tang and perfect amount of crunch. The addition of fresh cilantro always adds a fresh and herby after taste that you would expect from a good Vietnamese sandwich. I of course, opted for the Beef Combination Pho that comes with sliced rare beef, tendon, flank, brisket and tripe. The pho broth was flavorful and not watered down or salty, and you definitely taste the authentic Vietnamese flavors you expect from a great bowl. Last but not least, a Vietnamese meal is not complete until you down a cup of Vietnamese iced coffee. You know your craving has been satisfied when you walk away from a restaurant smiling and planning when you can come back. On my next visit, I'm sure I will have the pho again but will try the Bun Bo Xao as well.

Yelp
I have never actually been here, so this review is based only off of the delivery... and WOW. This is a go to spot for me in a pinch when I want something well balanced, clean and TASTY. I usually get a platter with shredded pork, grilled pork and add a shrimp skewer. It also comes with rice, veggies and a nice little fish sauce which I simply adore. It hits the spot every single time. Every time it comes too it is always hot and ready to eat. I have zero complaints about the quality of the food or restaurant. I have also ordered the grilled pork banh mi and that is also delicious, the bread is nice a crispy and the pork is grilled to perfection and the veggies that come on the side are always fresh and delicious. I have also gotten the sesame chicken which is fantastic, quality chicken breast lightly fried and I typically get the sauce on the side and it is perfect. The spring rolls are also great because you are able to customize them and they turn out great every time and you can get any type of combo of meats in them. Definitely another monthly staple for me!
google avatar

Nia B.

Yelp
Delicious, freshly made food! We ordered spring rolls, egg rolls, pho, and bahn mi and every single item was just divine! Also the staff is so sweet and accommodating!

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! Service was phenomenal and the food portions are HUGE! Forgot to take a picture of everything I order because I was hungry and the food came out looking delicious as always! Not photo but I highly recommend is the special rice platter also known as the Viking plater! Heads up the portion so big this platter can feed 2 adults!

Yelp
BEST EGG ROLLS ALERT!! Did I order egg rolls from Pho Mai 3 times in the last week? Did I scarf these down in my vehicle while parked in front of the building? Have I talked myself down from ordering for a 4th time this week? Yes. Yes. YES!! Do yourself a favor and head over to Dinkytown for these egg rolls. The filling is flavorful and well packed--no crumbling egg roll or losing half the filling when dipping! The outer shell is light but crispy and...gluten free! When I first picked up one of the egg rolls, I was shocked by the weight. Never have I ever been stunned by the weight of an egg roll. These have become a delicious mid-day snack as well as a complete lunch for me. The dipping sauce is a very light complement to the egg rolls. You just can't go wrong with these. If you're near the U of M campus, or just looking for the ultimate egg roll in the Twin Cities, be sure to order from Pho Mai. They always have my order completed on time. These egg rolls stay hot and crispy even when I exert enough patience to wait the entire 30 minute drive home before diving into my order.

Yelp
The place is small but clean and organized. Mask is compulsory to enter into the restaurant. Initially I wanted to have Pho but i couldn't as the broth is made of beef which I don't eat so I chose something else. Stir fry combo with shrimps - 3/5 the dish was not bad but I requested spicy and it was way too mild. The portion is good. The shrimp was a bit cold it seems like it was tossed directly from fridge/freezer into the pan. The fried rice was good but egg roll was very oily. Hot chicken combo - 3/5 chicken tasted good but I tasted too much soy sauce in it. Requested plain rice along with it. My friend did not like it and she rated it 2/5. Service was good but food was but disappointing! Maybe they have good pho but as for the dishes we tried it was not great experience.

Yelp
Came w Brandon again on a Friday. They had a special on certain pho ($5.99 w an appetizer or main course). I was in the mood for seafood so I went w Shrimp pho. Brandi got the chicken pho. We split shrimp spring rolls and and egg rolls. All quite good.

JM K.

Yelp
Very good food at a reasonable price. Large portions. I had noodle salad with tofu and it was delicious.

Yelp
Fulfilled my pho craving! I ordered a delicious tofu pho; the tofu was fried perfectly on all sides. The broth was light with a balanced anise flavor. Keep in mind, this restaurant offers very generous portions (much to my delight!) including large add-ons like basil, jalapeños, bean sprouts, lime, and side sauces. Pro tip: they offer $5 pho on Fridays! Service was kind and efficient, I couldn't ask for better! The restaurant was very clean, well-lit, with AC (I came in August) and comfortable seating. I highly recommend this place for a fulfilling and balanced meal at an affordable price! Thank you Pho Mai! :)

Yelp
Comparing this to LA or San Jose in California this definitely is better than what I've eaten back home. Amazing will come back!

Yelp
I knew that I was rolling the dice ordering Vietnamese from Dinkytown when there are sooo many elite options on Eat Street or in St. Paul, but based on the reviews, I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, the aforementioned shot missed. Pho with delivery is never as good, so I opted for the #39 grilled pork rice platter ($11). It was supposed to come with an egg roll, but unfortunately, they forgot to put it in the bag (it happens). The pork was nice and grilled, but there was a very, very small amount of it. Aside from that, all that remained was broken rice, cucumbers, and carrots. The sauce was incredibly sweet and overtook the dish. The dish certainly wasn't BAD, but it definitely did hit my palette right, either. Perhaps it was user error, though. I see that there are raving reviews about the Pho. I simply looked at stars and went from there. My two cents would be to stray away from the grilled pork platter and go with the pho.
