The Best Restaurants in Portland’s West Hills | Eater Portland

"Phở Nguyên serves some of the richest, meatiest pho in town. Carnivores will find an impressive list of options including round, flank, tendon, brisket, tripe, and meatballs. For those who aren’t willing to risk driving home with a hot bowl of pho, Nguyen also offers rice and vermicelli plates loaded with crispy grilled pork and shrimp." - Rebecca Roland

The Best Bowls of Pho in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"For carnivores who judge a bowl of pho based on the amount of meat it contains, Pho Nguyen delivers the beefy goods. Even so, the rich, no-need-for-condiments broth would make this Raleigh Hills restaurant a top contender if there were a Portland pho contest. While the pho doesn’t need extra seasoning, a spoonful of chile oil doesn’t hurt, either." - Janey Wong

This Vietnamese restaurant has absolutely ruined Vietnamese rice plate dishes for me. I cannot have com thit nuong (rice with grilled pork) anywhere else. My dad also swears by the pho and he's pretty picky about where he eats. These are all subjective opinions of course though, but they are run by lovely people and are worth a try!

Delicious Pho and broth! I was given lots of Thai basil, bean sprouts and meat for the pho. Clean and calm environment, will definitely come back.

P1. Pho Special ($17.75) and H2. Beef Stew Rice Noodle ($18) are our go-to dishes, and we've been ordering them every time we come here for years. (One time, while we were looking at the menu, our usual server even said, ‘P1 and H2, right?’—that’s how much of a regular order it is for us!🤣) The portions are so generous that we've never been able to finish a whole bowl. The Beef Stew Rice Noodle, in particular, is amazing—it comes loaded with huge chunks of beef, potatoes, and carrots, making it incredibly satisfying. We've yet to find a beef stew this good anywhere else!"🥰

This is a spacious restaurant with a very pleasant atmosphere. The servers are friendly, and the food is quite good. I hadn't had a good bowl of pho in a while, and this place served excellent noodles. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a light, satisfying meal.

A Hidden Gem: The Bò Kho (Beef Stew) is a Must-Try Masterpiece I came here specifically looking for beef stew and was absolutely blown away. Phở Nguyên is a true family-run hidden gem that serves a dish of exceptional quality. The Dish (Bò Kho - Beef Stew): I ordered the Bò Kho with Mì (egg noodles). The meat was, without exaggeration, the most tender I have ever had in a restaurant. This quality was exceeded only by the sheer quantity; there were at least six huge, incredibly tender chunks, easily eight to twelve ounces total. It was clearly a high-quality cut, either beef shank or brisket, braised to beyond perfection. It was so soft it simply fell apart, exhibiting a mastery of slow-cooking. The technical execution extended to every component, which is so hard to achieve in a stew. The carrot was bright orange, firm yet tender, and maintained its powerful, distinct carrot flavor-a sign of perfect timing, as it never absorbed the beef flavor. Likewise, the potato was flawlessly cooked; firm enough not to be mushy, yet soft. This incredible balance demonstrates true culinary mastery. The Experience: The care and tradition here are obvious. I initially sat toward the back and noticed a slight cleaning scent (I am extremely sensitive to chemical smells, so others may not notice it). The staff was extremely accommodating when I asked to move seats, and the issue was completely forgotten and masked by the incredible aroma of the Bò Kho when it arrived. The service was warm, provided by family members who clearly take pride in their work. If you are looking for authentic, unforgettable Vietnamese cuisine, this place is essential. The Bò Kho is a transformative meal. Rating: 5/5 Stars

The pho is the best in Portland. The portions, the flavor, the consistency. 1000/10. I come here every week. Service is rapid fast. The restaurant is family owned and operated. The place is always clean and inviting.
