The 13 Best Banh Mi Sandwiches In Austin

"The first time we went to Pho Van was because the line at Ramen Tatsu-Ya next door was too long. But after a few bites of bánh mì, it was apparent that we were getting more than a consolation prize. The grilled pork bánh mì is our favorite here—it’s packed full of smoky, savory chunks of char-grilled pork, and doused in just enough of a semi-sweet glaze to keep the whole sandwich incredibly juicy. This is also one of the few spots in town where you can get a bánh mì with sliced pork patty (and it’s a close second on our list of favorite sandwiches here).  " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Went there for lunch today! Thought this place was DELICIOUS. I ordered the pork banh mi and wonton soup and I finished both. The pork on the banh mi was super flavorful and had a char that almost made it seem like it was cooked over a charcoal grill. So good. The bread and veggies on the banh mi were excellent as well. The wonton soup was also SO yummy. The broth was flavorful and light, and the wontons had (I think) a shrimp and pork filling. Service was nice. It was very hands off, which worked well since it’s a small restaurant. It was slow enough when we went that if I needed anything, I could just look at one of the servers and they would come right over. My boyfriend got one of the rice plates, which he thought was very tasty, but he didn’t think the portion was big enough for his appetite. He had a bite of my sandwich, ended up finishing his sliced pork and rice plate, was still hungry, and then we ordered another banh mi for him. He finished that too! One thing to note: their prices have gone up. I looked at old reviews and saw the banh mi used to be $6.50, and it’s now $7.99. The wonton soup was $5.75, and I think it used to be around $3. Not a big deal, just something I noticed. So yummy, would recommend. And here’s a photo of the delicious wonton soup!

I love coming here! The food is always fresh and flavorful, the service is consistently friendly, and everything comes out super fast. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and their handmade lemonade is honestly the best. This spot has become my go-to for pho highly recommend!

Google
Came here with a friend to try their pho, can’t say I wasn’t impressed. The portions were great and the broth was delicious. The atmosphere was also quite nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you craving pho in the Austin area!

Google
Freshest pho broth in the city! Been coming here almost once a week for months and they never ever miss. This place is definitely my go-to feel good spot

Google
The pho place is really clean and looks ultra new! The owners put a lot of effort into the designs! The service is very attentive and the foods are served quite fast! We tried one pho, one BBQ rice, and a banh mi! The banh mi was really good! The pho was a bit light and clean in the broth! Didn't get to have other phos in Austin, but I suppose this one already has a pretty good rating compare to other ones for some reason!

Google
Absolutely delicious. Cleared my bowl! Also had beef banh mi that was finger licking good. Our server was an older woman but that didn’t slow her down, she provided fantastic service and was always keeping an eye out for us despite being busy. Highly recommend this place!

Excellent noodles! We always order the V6. The egg rolls in the vermicelli bowls are delicious. We love this place and were so happy to see the fresh remodel.

Google
I tried this place and had mixed feelings about it. The restaurant was clean and nice, with great service. The food came out very quickly, but the pho and bun bo lacked bold flavors. I ordered a large bowl of pho, but was disappointed by the limited meat toppings. Grilled pork rolls were goid though. While it was an okay place, it did not quite live up to my expectations of authentic Vietnamese food.

Yelp
Always great Vietnamese food since 1992! Went with my family in my teens and now I bring my own teens to eat! My sons love the Pho Tai (lean cuts of rare steak) and the Rice with Curry Chicken, with yummy sweet potatoes and succulent chicken pieces. Love the added touch of red onion and curry has a mild spicy kick (I add additional Sirarcha!) I looove the garlic honey chicken wings and pork/shrimp salad tools, my 'go-to' for appetizers. The fried egg rolls are also yummy. If you have had grilled chicken/pork/shrimp with rice...you haven't lived (Com Dac Biet)...enough for 2! Also have grilled chicken and if you don't like rice, can opt for a bed of cold rice noodles with bean sprouts and shaved carrots/diki. (Like a chef salad) Looove the Vietnamese ice coffee (ca phe sua da) with 3 shots expresso and just right amount of condensed milk (drinking the same drink over 30 years...and same high quality expresso machine). The also make a nice Thai tea, but I'm more a coffee lover. Their halo halo (Che ba mau) has homemade sweet beans (red/white) with scoops of fresh mung bean and red/green tapioca jellies...the secret is the coconut drizzle on top, a nice light additive and not overly sweet There were 2 other desserts (ginger crème brûlée, with a torched sugar glaze and banana bread pudding, a nice banana'cake' sitting on a warm banana/tapioca compote...with hints of coconut. Been coming hrrr over 30 years, and a true 'family' restaurant!

Yelp
Been coming to Pho Van for many years now this is my families go to place. Today we chose to eat at Pho Van like any other, I do have to say the food quality has gone down drastically. The broth has become flavorless, there's less and less meat in the bowl. Order the beef sandwich and the meat is just always overcooked now. Service has never been their stronger but today was the worst, we were seated in the far corner which is great because we come with little once's that are to make noice. We were not seated for more than 5 minutes when the old lady ( owner) told us to calm our little one with such a frustrated face because a customer complained mind you our little is nonverbal with Autism who finds confront is making sounds, We've come to this place many times and never once's had we received this treatment before, we always spend more than $100 +tip we also try to come early when there's a lot less people. We've won't be back to this location they're not kid friendly. If you want to have a good time with your kids while enjoying a good savory Pho you're better off going to. Yelp
Pho Van is hands down one of my go-to spots for a quick, comforting bowl of pho. I ordered the meatball pho and it did not disappoint. The broth was rich and flavorful, packed with those bold, savory notes you want in a good pho. The meatballs were tender with a nice snap, exactly how they should be. Service here is always fast and efficient. I barely sat down before my order was on the table, piping hot and fragrant. The staff is polite, no-nonsense, and keeps things moving smoothly, which I appreciate when I'm craving something satisfying on a tight schedule. Simple, clean space, consistently good food, and fair prices. If you love pho that actually tastes like something and won't have you waiting around, give Pho Van a try.

Yelp
The service is very good. I got pork dumplings to share with my husband. My dish is kids beef pho. It's a pretty place. I am excited to try my food here.

Yelp
Had a delicious lunch at Pho Van recently. The place is simple and clean. The staff is efficient and friendly. We shared a large bowl of pho (we like all the meats, minus the tendon) and shrimp spring rolls. It was all good. Recommend Pho Von for good pho and related fare!

Yelp
Pho Van is located in a mostly Asian business strip mall, adjacent to the Target store on Research Blvd in north Austin. There are a couple of other noodle based restos in this mall, one Ramen, the other presumably Chinese. The large Hong Kong Supermarket is closed. Pho Van looks like it's relatively new, or remodeled. The decor is simple and clean, with modern washed faux wood flooring, a long dining room long wood bench against the right wall, below a wave pattern high wainscot cutout, subtilely topped with a lavender LED light glow. There are about 16 tables, with simple danish modern wood and black seat pads, seating Mixed 2/4, well spaced, and enough room to add another row if demand required it. The left wall is all glass, like the front, so a clean, airy feel to the room. The back wall has a 4 seat bar left, snd and a pay counter right, both accented with plastic wall greenery. There are several real indoor plants around the entry door divider. Each table has Sriracha,Hoysin and Red Chili squeeze bottles. They offer the standard Viet diner type food, with an emphasis on Pho, it's in their name after all! But also a good selection of Banh Mi sandwiches, appetizers, and other dishes. I came at an off time, around 3pm, so there were only a few diners. Nonetheless, service was prompt, and the food came out quickly. The hostess was Vietnamese, the cook too, the table servers were Latino, but all spoke decent English. I ordered the N5, small, (Pho Tai, Nam) which is thin sliced round and flank steak. ( small = $12.25) Also A2. Cha Gio, or small egg rolls (2= $5.50). The flank steak was good quality. The round typical, The Cha Gio was hot out of the fryer crispy. Good condiments. The food here is good and reasonably priced, especially compared to the Bay Area, and service was good, too. I have lost count, but this Pho review is somewhere between my 100th and 150th Yelp review on Vietnamese restaurants and/or Pho, all over North America! Check out my collections for it here on Yelp!

Yelp
Ordered pickup and they were quick and kind! I got an order of fresh spring rolls with shrimp. The peanut sauce was ok and a little more thin. Than I'd prefer. The pho ga (chicken) was good! I'm normally not a big soup or pho person, but this was exactly what I needed.

Yelp
Good Vietnamese food. Sometimes I go and it's super awesome and sometimes not as flavorful. Ordering to go is hit or miss. Pictured below is one of the times it was super good

Yelp
The remodeled interior of Pho Van is clean and simple, creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. The updated design enhances the dining experience without losing the restaurant's familiar charm. Despite the fresh look, the same extremely friendly staff is still there, providing the warm and attentive service that regulars have come to expect. However, the N16 combo pho bowl left a lot to be desired. While the broth was flavorful, the lack of meat in the bowl was disappointing and detracted from an otherwise enjoyable meal. I need more than 2-3 small slices of beef and a single one inch tripe strand in a large sized bowl....
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
First time coming here after the remodeling and the place looks great! Very clean and minimalistic, and there was some nice music playing. This pho place is definitely one of the cheaper ones, and you can choose small or large sizes for the bowls as well, which I think is super great! We ordered the meatball pho and the bun bo hue. The meatball pho was a classic, very nice and savory soup that goes well with the bean sprouts and basil. The bun bo hue has a spicy base with thicker noodles and a good amount of pork blood and other meat. The service was speedy, and the food tastes just as good as before!

Yelp
Still one of my Favorite Vietnamese places in town. They've redone the interior / much nicer. Coffee is one of the best in town - super strong - just how I like it. The vermicelli bowl (bun) was excellent!

Yelp
We have been here many times and I'm shocked I didn't review this place earlier. We went here this past weekend and it's always consistently good. I also really like their Thai ice tea which is a perfect ratio of tea and condensed milk. I've had both their beef pho and chicken pho here and both are legit. We first started coming here when we lived in cedar park. We now live in Buda and still drive up here for the pho so that should say something.

Yelp
My absolute favorite pho spot - it's been a go-to since I moved to Austin 8 years ago. I have tried many other places in the city, but none beat Pho Van. 10/10 recommend!

Sahra Y.

Yelp
Egg rolls were soggy. Hated my rice and chicken meal. Would not eat here again. I'll just stick to my usuals, wasted 36 dollars in this economy.

Yelp
Went here for lunch on a Sunday and got a table super fast! The service was AMAZING!!! Everyone was so kind and friendly, my friend left his keys and a staff ran out to the parking lot to return it. We got the bun bo hue and pho and both were really good! The bun bo hue was very flavorful, one of my favs in Austin. The pho was delicious too! The newly decorated place is also beautiful. Will definitely be back :D
google avatar

Yelp
This is quite the hole in the wall actually. You'll be seated and choose your meal by letter and number. Ex. N1, N12 Table of 4 on a Monday night was not incredibly busy so there was no wait. The beef broth for my dish was flavorful and the meat was tender. They didn't check on us often but did not need to. Towards the end you'll need to go to the counter and let them know what your order was in order to pay. The ambiance was a bit bland. Not very picturesque but food quality was great.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
So glad to see that Pho Van is open again after someone crashed their car through the front window last year. The great news is that the food is as good as ever, and that the accident allowed them to do a great remodel, which was very well executed. It's a lovely informal place to enjoy well prepared Vietnamese food. The service is prompt and unobtrusive. It's a sweet place and a family favorite. It's quiet enough to allow you to enjoy your conversation. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Diane T.

Yelp
Overall decent pho in a clean no frills location that serves up food fast with you paying at the counter. Food: I had the N8 - Pho Tai, Nam, Gau - eye round steak, flank, and fat brisket. It was good beefy broth but a bit heavier on star anise than I would like. The meat wasn't super tender, but decent. I'd probably put food at a 3 being ok but the location and quickness of service adds a star for me. Logistics: Close to target so good for grabbing a meal after errands. There's a parking lot out front but narrow spaces. Lots of other food options in strip.
google avatar

Lena H.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and was quickly seated. I ordered small pho w/ meatballs. The noodle portion was a lot. Flavor was standard. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I did notice the condiments bottles for the last ho needs to be wiped down. You can tell when the sauce is cakey around the spout and residue on the side of the bottle.

Yelp
another of my go to's for pho. really delicious and great service with good spacing between tables. one issue... they are closed due to some car that ran through the restaurant dining area like wtf?! anyways this review is a month overdue so if its open now, lmk so i can head over there lol
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
I ordered pho bowl N16. It was flavorless and had two whole pieces of meat. This is very disappointing for the Vietnamese community. I'm out here trying to support places that continue to disappoint.
google avatar

Liam M.

Yelp
Amazing food. I never have any problems here. I have been coming here for 14 years. I was devastated when the closed for a while when a car drove through the store. They have quick honest service and a very welcoming feel.
google avatar

Yelp
Our second time visiting Pho Van, and it was great. We came during dinner time on Wednesday, and it was not busy. We were quickly seated, had our orders taken, and received our food in under 10 minutes. I ordered the large N17 (Pho Tai, Nam, Gan, Sach) with extra limes and my boyfriend ordered the large N1 (Pho Tai) with extra noodles. The portion size was good. This is definitely one of the better pho places in Austin! My only complaint is that the noodles were slightly overdone even when I first got my food. Other than that, Pho Van successfully satisfied our pho craving.
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
I love pho van, personally it's my favorite pho in Austin, their broth is just so rich and the meat is so tender, I've never had a bad bowl.

Diane G.

Yelp
My absolute favorite Vietnamese spot in town -- and recently renovated. Find a spot in the crazy busy lot attached and chill out as soon as step inside. Super friendly staff and fast service. Their selection of pho choices is great. The fresh Spring Rolls are awesome. My husband loves their vermicelli dishes including the fried egg rolls.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
This time we got their pork banh mi sandwich, but we have tried their pho and egg rolls before. I'm not a huge pork fan but I think for those that don't mind a pork banh mi this was an alright sandwich. Good tasting seasonings inside the sandwich. Now for prior experiences with their pho, it is on the oily side. The egg rolls are ok, probably middle of the road as far as this goes.

Andrea C.

Yelp
I just discovered this spot for pho over the summer, and since finding it, I go most times I am in the area, near the Target. Parking is easy, and the meat-free pho I order is delicious and so hot. The fixings are plenty and super fresh. I would love to have this right now! I tried the veggie dumplings and they were not anything I would ever order again. I will stick to the pho. The small bowl is huge, and I always take some home with me. The price is right for the portion. The staff is very nice, and I am always happy to see that those-who-are-probably-the-owners, acknowledge me, whether they are waiting on me or not - I like to think it is because I am now a "regular". I make it a point to tip generously in cash, and I go fairly often, because I want these owners to thrive in their business. I would rate this as 4.5 stars, but rounding up instead of down, because this is a solid place to go. Would like to see soy sauce on the table, and I always have to ask for a to-go container for my half-full bowl, so I would appreciate either a place to get that for myself, or for someone to check on me once I have stopped eating. In most places, you are typically brought the check, and that is when you'd ask; but since they keep your check at the counter, you will need to flag someone down. That is a bit annoying, but not by any means a deal breaker. Next time, I am going to ask for the to-go container at the time I order, so I am not left waiting to get it once I am done eating.
google avatar

Cameron Q.

Yelp
I got bun bo hue and spring rolls here. The bun bo hue was ok. It definitely was missing some of spices. Not too spicy to my liking. The spring rolls were meh. The sauce was just a dilute hoisin sauce. Overall, it was okay

Yelp
PHO VAN IS NOW OPEN AGAIN AND FULLY RENOVATED! Come on over and check out what they've done with the place. They have a full menu and friendly ready to serve you!

Yelp
Lately I've been looking for a Vietnamese restaurant with what I consider very good bahn mi sandwiches. Normally we go for the soups and the stews and the stir frys at Vietnamese restaurants but I made it my mission to find what I consider the best bahn mi in Austin. Pho Van is my second attempt and I have to admit the sandwich was pretty good but I had to drop a star because the bread, although was very similar to French bread, had more of a sub sandwich bread taste and mouth feel. There just wasn't that crunchy, crumbly, crusty, slight chewiness mouth feel when eating the sandwich. For me a good bahn mi sandwich involves a lot of crumbs all over everything. I thought the inside of the sandwich was quite tasty however the cucumber slices on my sandwich were too large and when I bit into them it almost watered down the taste of the other ingredients. I took out the cucumber on my second half of the sandwich and the flavor really came through this time. I need to give a shout out on their pork spring rolls. This is the first time I can ever remember getting spring rolls where the pork inside was actually still very warm. That had a really good mouth feel to it and made me enjoy them a little bit more. Additionally the rolls were not wrapped so tight that it feels like you're eating a mummy, they were slightly loose which made it feel like they were freshly made.

Yelp
As a native Houstonian, I have high standards for pho in terms of price and taste. Pho Van did not disappoint. We came in shortly after the freeze when some people lost power and the owners were really friendly despite the place being busy. I had the fried shrimp rolls which I had never seen before in another Vietnamese restaurant. The pho broth was really flavorful, the ingredients were fresh, and $12 for a large bowl is a great price. I would definitely come back for a hot bowl of pho.

Carolina M.

Yelp
I've been coming to this spot for over 7 years. I love pho van! I have No complaints!

Keane O.

Yelp
pho was so good i had to clean the whole bowl. Good food quality and good pricing. Very good service :)

David M.

Yelp
Service is amazing here. It was semi packed on a Sunday evening, we were quickly seated. Food comes out fairly quickly, probably about 10 minutes after you order and we ordered a lot. We got shrimp pho and beef broth pho, steamed dumplings and pork banh mi (sandwich). Pho was hot, good portion of rice noodles and meats! Steamed dumplings were good! Pork banh mi was delicious! They have a chili paste, siracha, and chili oil upon request. Overall great experience!

Yelp
Surprising that we don't have a review of Pho Van since we've been here twice before (though many years before, probably before we started Yelping). We came here on a whim tonight since we were up north anyway and it was cold and rainy and why the hell not. Wellllllll, we'll tell you why: it's just plain OK. The place is dinky but not in a charming way, and it was really drafty and chilly, so not much an improvement from outside. Our daughter's kid's chicken pho was a bowl of 80% noodles, 10% broth, and 10% chicken. Don't get us wrong, she was happy, but still. The beef pho with round steak (add broccoli) had a murky broth, but it wasn't too bad. A bit more flavor would have gone a long way, but it's par for the course B-level pho. The vermicelli bowl with shrimp and beef was about the same. So, all in all, it's the same meal that you could have at a similar such place so there's not much you'd be missing if you didn't come. We think a good chunk of their business must come from people who give up waiting on the Tatsu-ya line. Three stars, no need to return, but we wish them well.

Yelp
Pho Van is my go-to for excellent no-nonsense pho and bun. The same lady had been there for a hundred years and she's always gruffly welcoming in a way that makes me feel strangely at home. Your food arrives almost before you order it and the quality is always top notch. Lunch is always busy with a wide variety of customers, which I also like. You can pay a little less--or a lot more--but when you need a reliable and wonderful bowl of steaming pho tai, you just can't beat this place.
google avatar

Aria H.

Yelp
Overall a decent option but not the best. Staff was friendly. Place seemed clean. Pho was okay, def need more flavor. Eggrolls were crispy but could also use more flavor. Try it and see.

Webster S.

Yelp
It was pitiful, ( that was the wife's review) we got shrimp and grilled pork... the pork was cold and filled with gristle the shrimp was old and overcooked... as were the spring rolls. We also got egg rolls that were the worst I have ever had. EVER! .... We also got spring rolls which were maybe not the worst but next to the worst... again stale shrimp and tasteless and stale vermicelli.... I've been here many times... it has been a while, but will not be going back... I spent 60 dollars and feel (No I KNOW!) I would have done better at McDonalds. They lost me as a customer
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
The food was good. The service was too. The place is clean, there is ample seating for a good crowed. I have had better but not by much. Prolly the best Bahn Mi I've had since I've moved to Austin.
google avatar

Casey T.

Yelp
The pho here was disappointing to say the least. I ordered a large bowl of brisket pho, and there were only maybe 5 measly strips of brisket (and that's being generous). The toppings were extremely lacking as well, and the broth was watered down. I felt like I was just eating a big bowl with just noodles and water. The only good thing about this place is that the service is FAST, I swear we sat down and got our food in less than 10 minutes total.
google avatar

Mariana G.

Yelp
I have been coming to Pho Van and getting their pho for two years, never exploring anything else on their menu. Their pho is so good, I never wanted to try anything else. My boyfriend, on the other hand, always gets a banh mi, so I finally listened to him and ordered one for myself. I got the S7 (banh mi bo nuong, aka grilled beef sandwich) which comes with cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots, two jalapeño slices, and savory marinated grilled beef. It was so delicious, I'm already dreaming about my next one.
google avatar

Vivian F.

Yelp
Reasonable prices, no frills and yummy food. Not mind blowing pho but definitely worth checking out if in the area. If you get the small vs. large, big difference in meat.

Amy K.

Yelp
I've ordered take out from here a few times, and loved it! I usually get the chicken pho, but I've also had the vermicelli. Both were very flavorful. Also love the sides, and the Suong Xa Hot Luu pudding. It's very sweet, if you like that type of dessert. Google maps and DoorDash both say that the restaurant is "Temporarily closed." I'm wondering if they're going to open up again? I'd certainly go in person if they did!
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
Still my favorite place for Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches. I see in the reviews that the vermicelli bowls are good here too, and the pho is a hit and miss - in general, if you're searching for Vietnamese food, this place might not be the holy grail. But the banh mi is at bar none - because compared to other ones in town, I'm hard pressed to find any that uses better bread than this place does. And the rest is executed flawlessly. I would not hesitate coming again the sandwiches.

Yelp
We live half a mile away so decided to walk over and pick up lunch to finally try this place. It looked clean and well-lit. We ordered fried rice and such to go, and chatted with the friendly staffer for a little bit. I bought some super-cute Lunar New Year stickers, too. The food was ready fast and it was absolutely delicious.

Grace I.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and service. I always order To-go, and their quality of to-go containers is amazing. Me and my partner eat here at least once a week.

Mary R.

Yelp
This is Vietnamese cuisine at its best. I loved my meal! I'm so happy to have Pho Van's in Rotterdam!

Brian C.

Yelp
Pho Van has reopened! I went there for lunch today and it was just as good as I remembered. I'm glad they're back and look forward to my next visit!
