The Best Restaurants in Montreal’s Gay Village and Centre-Sud | Eater Montreal

"Slurp the night away with a Tonkinese soup from this small family-run Vietnamese operation. It’s been around for years, and its fried noodles are a crowd favourite, too." - Valerie Silva

The Best Montreal BYOB Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Not every Vietnamese soup shop in the city is a BYOB like Pho Viet, but that’s not the only thing that makes this restaurant stand out. A table d’hôte for just over $20 per head scores a full table of soups, going beyond Vietnam’s borders with green curry for the more venturesome diner and General Tao chicken for those less so. Note that Pho Viet is cash-only, so stop by the bank on the way." - Holly Tousignant

I ordered a large pho, and it came smaller than a small. Taste was mediocre at best, with very little ingredients. To make matter worse, they accept only cash, which was not notified in advance. I had to do e-transfer to pay. A mostly unpleasant experience.

Food was FANTASTIC!!!!! We ordered a few things off the menu for takeout and everything was delicious and fresh! We will definitely be back again! Very friendly service! Especially the owners are really nice and accommodating. 11/10 👏

The food was amazing, very tasty, felt homemade ❤️ The owners were very friendly and didn’t forget anything despite the place being PACKED at Friday night. Let me say, it was LOUD 😁 But it was worth it. Will come back again and bring friends. Prices are very good as well. We had Pho and Pad Thai, and two portions of appetizer rolls and paid 50$. Finished everything even though portions were gigantic 😁 All in all, very happy with the visit!

Google
Discover this place by coincidence but I was impressed. Really good service, fresh and tasty food, BYOB is a big plus, charming and cozy decor. The staff are adorable. I highly recommend. It’s cash only.

I felt like we were treated differently from other customers. We were not served with water and utensils until we asked. Then We asked vinegar for pho, the lady said they don’t eat pho with vinegar… and there’s hair in my soup. Chef and waitress were very nice tho, overall food was not bad

Google
Small restaurant looks family owned, I almost thought it was closed. It’s in a basement but don’t let that stop you from going. The food was sooo good, enjoyed all of it. Total cost was $29

Yelp
Based on my personal taste. The dishes are very delicious. It's a family business. You can serve for a small group of people. The portion is very big.

Yelp
Had a craving during a recent visit to Montreal and came to Yelp to look for a local pho spot. Pho Viet looked good so I went over. When I walked in, I was a little taken aback when they asked me if I had a reservation... having frequented Toronto locations for so long, imagining making reservations for pho was a little mind blowing. I didn't, and was worried I wouldn't be able to eat but thankfully they were able to accommodate me. I ordered the basic pho but was a little disappointed that they didn't have a spicy satay option that is so ubiquitous in Toronto. However, I forgot about all of that when I had my first taste... it was sooooo good... and then I added lime... I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a basic pho broth so much.. I always get the satay version to level it up, but this, was just packed with flavour! I can't wait to take my wife and go back.

Yelp
Very surprised to read some of the comments, let me explain. This place is owned by a Vietnamese (they speak french perfectly) family from Saigon. It's cash only and prices are very reasonable, they do not serve alcohol but pho (soup) and some grilled/fried meats plate with appetizers of course. It might not look too appealing because of the discrete decorations and curtains but you have to try it. The owner is super friendly, she might teach you one or two things about Viêt Nam and you can trust she takes care of the source of the food she offers. Please do not order the general tao chicken but ask the waitress a taste of Ho Chi Minh's food : she is surely able to help you with that. Come here as the tourist you are and you might want to try some more Vietnamese food!

Yelp
Came here for a work dinner because it's BYOW/BYOB. Service was horribly slow and only 1 waitress was there for the whole restaurant when they were nearly full the whole evening. Several people ordered drinks and just never got them, and dishes came in fits and starts, leaving people either eating with everyone around them watching or having their food cold. Now if the service was not great, but the food was good, I'd probably give 4 stars because it's a small BYOB and I don't expect stellar service from that kind of place. The food was not good. The menu is pages and pages (warning sign) and they have lots of dishes that are not very Vietnamese to say the least (general tao chicken, peanut shrimp/chicken) and I even saw one review even complimenting this place's Thai cuisine, which says a lot. I didn't have the pho, but a colleague who did said it was underwhelming and not really flavorful. I went with the "peanut chicken" because it was on the list of house specialties and this place having 4.4 stars & 131 reviews on GMaps lead me to think that this surely would be a Vietnamese take on the North American "Asian peanut sauce meat dish" that would be tasty. It was not. You could tell they use the same oil to cook fish and chicken dishes, the rice was a bit dry (also I'd ordered vermicelli), the amount of chicken vs vegetable was unimpressive, the sauce had an odd aftertaste. I would not go back.

Yelp
It is my opinion that this is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in greater Montreal. The first night we went, we were excited by the flavors and freshness of the selections. The restaurant is casual, bring your own wine, and family owned. If you do not see exactly what you want, just ask the owner woman or her daughter and they are so happy to go out of their way to make something just for you. The beef pho is AMAZING with rich flavor. The fresh rolls with shrimps, mint, and noodles with peanut dipping sauce are a tease. So good that you can not wait for the entree to come. Pho Viet is now a must stop for Dennis and I when we visit Montreal. We came here TWICE in one week as it was so good!! Steps away from the gay village and rue St Catherine.

Yelp
For me this place has it all: delicious, fresh, cheap, homey, bring your own wine. The pho is simply amazing, it's extremely flavorful and tastes like the pho in Saigon. It's hard to find a better pho, not just in Montreal but anywhere. If you go there, take advantage of the real great Vietnamese dishes they have, or ask them what they recommend before you take something stupid like General Tao chicken. Some of my favorites: the pho, spring rolls, caramelized salmon, grilled meats (chicken, porc, beef). Also, I read the comments about the quality of the service. Well, if you've ever been to Vietnam, you'll see that there isn't such a thing as "a good service", it's just not part of the culture. Obviously we're not in Vietnam here and there is a good service at Pho Viet, but I'm just saying, this place is a Vietnamese family-own restaurant, don't take it too seriously on the service, it's about food here. The staff is super nice and casual, take it easy and be nice too, and if you want the bill just ask for it!

Yelp
This is delicious restaurant. I had the curried chicken which came with soup , vegetables & rice. Bring your own wine or beer. The hostess was very nice & the food was great!

Yelp
We came here because we wanted to go to a BYOB (o "Apportez Votre Vin") restaurant in Montreal. After hearing about Pho Viet, we decided to go give it a try. The place is small and gives this homey ambience, which was a plus for me. I got a combo of grilled shrimp on skewer and grilled beef with vermicelli. The grilled beef was delicious...cooked very nicely. The shrimp was meh...I had a lot better tasting shrimps than that. The dining experience was a disappointment. First, the food took a while to come out, and then the waitress got the order wrong. My friend order a beef with lemongrass, and she got grilled chicken instead. When she did get the beef lemongrass, the beef had no essence of lemongrass. She was very disappointed. My other friend got chicken with vegetables, which she said was nothing extraordinary. After dinner, the waitress didn't come give us the check until an hour after we finished our food. The place was busy but not that busy to 'ignore' us for an hour. Other than the beef and the BYO, there is nothing great about this place. Perhaps it is their pho that I should have tried. Oh well...

Yelp
Came here because Pica Pica was closed and we didn't really have a plan b. Other reviews are not kidding about slow service. There were only a couple of other tables occupied, but only one server who took her sweet time with everything. Lemonade came after the pho and spring roll app, even though everything was ordered at the same time? And tasted like Country Time powder mix. Maybe that's why it's apportez votre vin? Pho was okay but had too much cinnamon in it (?) and was pre-flavored (did not come with the customary basil leaves, sprouts, fish sauce, and lime to make it to your taste). Disappointing to say the least. Next time I want pho in Montreal, I'll go back to Pho Bac 97. Or anywhere else.

Yelp
Yes, its been around forever and the reason it is still in business is because they are very consistent in their food. So if you love it here - you will always love it. It's the same place as it was 20 years ago. That being said, the Pho is 'good' but not outstanding. The food could use more "Vietnamese" in its cuisine as I found the menu pretty basic and non-eventful. I had the ginger fish which was nice and for desert the fried bananas. All good. I would go back if I was in the neighborhood, but wouldn't go out of my way or bring people from out of town here.

Yelp
Just ate at Pho Viet based on the first review on Yelp and its 1-block distance from my lodgings. Great pho! Very rich broth with a unique, complex flavor, and the beef was incredibly tender, without the bit of gristle that is common in more hole-in-the-wall places. I missed the plate of spouts, chilis, basil, and cilantro that I have become accustomed to in the States, but this may be a regional thing. A huge bowl of Pho Ba and a homemade lemonade (beh, not the greatest but not bad) was only $10!

Yelp
Really great Thai food and BYOB! My favorites are the chicken dumplings in satay sauce, Pad Thai, and beef with basil. We had no issues with service on a Saturday night around 9pm and were sat right away.
