Solid Chinese cafe food. The duck with steam buns was delicious. I do wish the skin was crispier but at this price, I am not complaining. The water spinach with garlic was the perfect accompaniment along with steamed white rice. I like to pour the water sauce from the spinach on my rice with a little soy sauce and chili sauce. Yum! The service is typical cafe service. It’s not priced for fine dining so don’t expect fine dining service. It’s great casual cafe style service that comes with great affordable, authentic Chinese cafe food. Good tea and they even sent us home with a treat of mango custard. Will for sure be back when I’m the area but not a go-out-of -your-way spot.

This restaurant is very affordable, every dish looks big and is packed with great flavors. If you come to this place with a group, there is a mandatory tip so don't get surprised by that (it will be included in your check). I got various items from the menu, some of the highlights were the garlic and shrimp fried rice and the Chinese sausage fried rice. The service was great and included tea. My party kept drinking hot tea and the waitress was always on top of it and refilling it. Even when we finished our meal and we were just chatting amongst each other, the waitress still offered tea, it was a very nice gesture and made us feel welcome to stay more. Pending on how much you eat, I recommend getting the number of plates = the number of people in your party. If you cannot finish everything, they offer boxes to take out the rest of your food. I recommend dining in, it is clean and spacious. The only bad thing is that some members of my party went to the bathroom and it was not clean, one of them even said that it ruins part of the experience. For the owner: Please clean the restroom, it would have been a perfect experience.

Google
I'm in love. We are here and service was immediate. The staff was so friendly. The food is delicious. No need for soy sauce. We are having fried rice and Beef Rice Noodles/chow fun. Man is it fun to my pallet. Thank you Phoenix inn.

Google
A few of us in our party either hadn't had Chinese in a long time or were picky when it comes to Chinese cuisine. So if you're that kind of group and looking to experience authentic non-fast food Chinese cuisine, this is the place! We all enjoyed our meal. Recommend the sweet and sour pork, sausage fried rice, and Korean style beef haha. Nice staff!

Google
I ordered the Phoenix BONELESS chicken (half-chicken size). The top layer of my order is boneless chicken. The bottom half layer is a mixture of unseasoned pieces of chicken with bones and bone with little meat. This is frustrating and potentially dangerous for people who expect a full box of boneless chicken and don't eat carefully enough. I hope the manager take care of this soon. I also got the Durian Delight. It is not a smoothie. There are big chunks of ice. And the drink is too sweet. I hope there is an option for adjusting the sweetness.

Google
Fantastic Chinese food with friendly service. Right off the main road through Chinatown, it's easy to park nearby and get to the restaurant. The staff was very friendly and service was quick, but we never felt rushed. The green beans were amazing and it was by far the bust Kung Pao Chicken I've ever had. I would love to go back and sample more food, but everything we had was great.

Google
Phoenix Inn, one of the most storied restaurants in L.A. Chinatown. Truly Great food and friendly service. Huge portions. Nothing fancy, 60s decor. No site of Katai Chang and his wife, May Chang, But they'd probably be well into their hundreds if still alive. Real treat to visit The most successful Chinese restaurant empire in LA.

Google
Very friendly staff. So glad these guys have been around! Although, I heard WAY back in the day, this was the only place that served morning 潮州-style 點心. If those rumors are true, can we bring them back? Admittedly though, even without that, the food is still good here.

Yelp
WOW! I've grown up eating at all kinds of Chinese restaurants, both traditional and modern, but the hospitality at this specific Phoenix Inn location in Chinatown really stood out. My family and I visited for lunch last week with some out-of-town relatives. We were a party of 7 and got seated right away, even during the busy lunch hour. This was my first time at this location, and I was genuinely impressed. While there's no private parking, there is a convenient lot just up the street with a $5 flat rate for all-day parking, and there were plenty of open spots, which made things easier. Our server, Ashley, was so kind and helpful in recommending dishes for a more family style experience. The food was as solid as we've come to expect from other Phoenix locations: flavorful, comforting, and great for sharing. What really made this visit special was the service. Ashley offered to sign us up for their free membership with just one phone number and surprised us with a complimentary mango mochi dessert. To top it off, she also brought out shaved ice on the house before we left. Such a thoughtful and generous gesture! We later found out this was Phoenix Inn's original location, and you can feel a sense of history here, but it's been nicely updated to feel clean and cozy. Shoutout to Ashley and the team for making us feel so welcomed. This spot definitely left a lasting impression, and we'll be back again!

Yelp
I postmated kungpao chicken, mapo tofu, water spinach and Singapore noodles. Only item that was good off the bat was the Singapore noodle. The seasoning was right on and there were ample amount of flavor. Second best was the water spinach that was way overcooked to a point of mushiness and sorely lacked flavor. It sorely needed salt and although I can physically see the chopped garlic, but could not really taste the garlic. It was better after I sprinkled some salt. Kungpao chicken lacked flavor and really needed more dried peppers and salt. I suggest you write specifically how spicy you want the Kungpao chicken to taste...otherwise you will get the flavorless option. Mapo tofu is not worth ordering. It just does not taste like anything. I don't know what happened to Phoenix Inn in Downtown LA. The food here used to taste good years ago. The one in Monterey Park is much better.

Yelp
Review for to-go experience. I ordered pick up on door dash. My order was, hot and sour soup, green beans, and mongolian beef! All items hit the spot! My brief experience walking in was prompt with service and easy pick up. I was intrigued by the interior thought it was inviting. I would def dine-in next time.

Yelp
Phoenix gets the job done. Generous portions, fair pricing, and fast delivery. Half the time we order food is from Phoenix Inn because of this. My favorites are the ones in this photo. There are plenty of choices on the menu, but these are the ones we always get. Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Duck & Preserved Egg Congee, Hong Kong Style Rice Noodles, and any of the Red Bean desserts. These are wholesome comfort foods that bring back memories of dishes that I had growing up.

Yelp
I can only comment on takeout, but we had an excellent experience with Phoenix Inn. We normally order from a handful of other Chinatown restaurants for our cravings, but wanted to give this place a shot. Everything was prepared in a timely manner and was reasonably priced. Everything was also packaged very well, with some efforts to use paper/recyclable packaging which we appreciated. We ordered the spicy salt chicken wings, green beans, and fried fish filet. The chicken wings and fish filets were fried perfectly and shockingly not oily AT ALL. Oily fried food was always the expectation with most to-go Chinese takeout, but this was such a nice surprise. Amazing crispiness was achieved without feeling heavy. The green beans were beautifully blistered and had the right bite, snd we were so impressed with the cook on these too! We plan to order from Phoenix Inn moving forward - you can expect an elite cook on all takeout items and will be satisfied with your meal. Thanks to the cooks!

Yelp
Cozy Chinese restaurant. Friendly staff to help you order and dine. I ordered takeout and portion sizes are decent. Very tasty and fresh. Each was made-to each order.

Yelp
My favorite childhood restaurant. I came here w my whole family maybe when i was only 7-8 years old? Now more than 20 years later it's still my favorite place. Food tastes the same & ALWAYS amazing! I prefer this location even though it's more than an hour away from my house. The only thing missing is my favorite grandpa who I would see all the time when i was younger, he was the cutest grandpa ever and when i was younger i would always gift him red envelope (begging my mom for it or using my owns) lol. Always 10/10.

Yelp
I ordered via Uber Eats but should be for Arcadia location. I called the restaurant immediately and not to start my order. I also cancelled the order in the app. But the restaurant still changed my order at FULL price over $34. I did not get any food at all. Uber Eats told me that their system cannot refund me but talked to the restaurant directly. I went to the restaurant today. The young guy run the place today was not on duty yesterday. He asked me to show him my cancelled order. Then he had the kitchen made them for me immediately. Food tastes great! He is so kind and made my day!

Yelp
The Fried Pork Chops are tasty and delicious. I will be trying other dishes as I go through the menu. Great memories coming with my parents.

Raymond L.

Yelp
This was once the "go to" place, especially for a late night meal. Unfortunately once the original owners passed away (RIP) their kids took it over and expanded to many more locations and quality has faded slowly. It has reached a point where you would not think they were ever affiliated - sad to see after their parents made it a Chinatown icon. For example; the rice porridge does not taste remotely the same, the beef chow fun was awful with many of the noodles still clumped together and soy sauce mix unevenly distributed leaving much of the noodles untouched and still snow white in color. All signs the kitchen nor owners care about the quality of food they are serving. We do not plan on returning to any of their locations (other restaurant location on Valley Bl. in Alhambra) where we experienced the same.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer, take out or dinning in has became a negative experience. Food is becoming over priced and the customer service has been getting worse. A skinny waitress just maddogged me and my boyfriend. Didn't greet us just asked for take out, looked annoyed when I asked for a table. Then practically threw the menus on our table. We can tell it's a colored thing because they were being extremely nice to other guest and we had to remind them that we needed napkins and silverware. They give desert for guest who spend more than 40 dollars and they rudely gave us an old coconut flavor. We tried to exchange it but they refused. When I tried it the custard was becoming clumpy.. I don't know why the service has changed drastically.. would recommend to go somewhere else especially if you're gonna spend 80 or more for 4 plates of food.

Yelp
Yelp asked after check-in, "Is this place romantic?" No. "Is this place hipster?" No. "Is this place divey?" Some would say, yes. Located in Chinatown in an unassuming corner, stands Phoenix Inn. Been frequenting this business for years and have been selfish by not sharing my thoughts with the world. But as my motto states, "If I'm not Yelping, I ain't helping." Went against the grain on July 4th by indulging in Asian fare instead of cooking American BBQ before heading to the Dodger game. Without a doubt, went for the family faves per usual. The fried whole fish is simplicity at its finest here--the edges so crispy, you can eat right through the tail yet the meat is still tender. Ordered half of the roasted duck--again, skin perfectly roasted but the meat is still moist. Can't go wrong with the water spinach sautéed with garlic as greens for balance. We usually customize the chow fun noodles to sub regular broccoli for the Chinese broccoli and omit the bean sprouts to my daughter's liking. As with any Chinese restaurant, the servers will come to you fast once you're seated. So come with your appetite and favorite dishes in mind. We came just before the lunch hour rush and we left pretty full with plenty of leftovers for dinner. Phoenix has an A health grade but if you're in the Chinatown area, you can decide for your selves.

Yelp
It must be ages to me to remember when was the last time I was here. This time, I was here after the LA Chinatown firecracker run. And boy, the food quality amazed me, and the service was top-notch. We are a group of 11, and we ordered lots of food. The dish that stood out was the salt fish tofu hot pot. It was so good that our group ordered two. The taste was good and the smell of saltfish made you wonder where was this dish my whole life. I will go back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Phoenix is generally a reliable Chinese eatery brand, and you can expect a B+ meal on a standard visit. But I recently ordered the Stir Fried Noodles w/ Beef Brisket, expecting something closer to chow mein. It wasn't. It was a strange afterthought of chow mein noodles soggified to an unsalvageably mooshy point of inedibility by a meager sluice of Cantonese beef stew. And I love Cantonese beef setw, but the unsuspecting among us likely won't enjoy the paucity of beef, and the bits of tendon and gristly bits that come with the territory. It was a waste; they should take it off the menu.

Yelp
My sister and I decided to come here for dinner. We were too lazy to go elsewhere lol. Restaurant is located in Chinatown. It is a pretty small restaurant but can fit decent amount of customers. They serve food along with desserts. If just purchasing desserts, it may be ordered at the counter. Soup of the day: it was pumpkin soup. Soup has pumpkin, winter melon with pork bone. Good for a good night. Beef crispy noodles: not on the menu but can definitely ask for it! The sauce was a bit salty but was really good. Crispy noodle is my favorite. Deep fried fish with sweet corn: a very interesting dish! I've never had fish with corn before. Fish was cooked perfectly. Huge pieces as well. Sauce was sweet and creamy. The sauce was like a corn soup. Water spinach with garlic: simple and good. Something healthy :) Coconut taro pudding: so good! If only there were more than 3 pieces. Maltose glazed pecans: this is a must! Super addicting! Kinda expensive but it's worth it. Prices were average for LA area. Portions were huge! Food was good. Food came out quick. Service was decent.

Yelp
I came to Phoenix Inn often as a kid with my family, and then had a 20+ year gap before moving back to California and being able to eatat this place again. Things are different now--Phoenix is a franchise, the menu has changed a lot, you don't get free house soup right as you get seated, and there's a big focus on dessert now. And during COVID, I was only able to order for delivery. I finally had the chance to eat in for a weeknight meal here recently, and I really had a great time. The service was so friendly, and they had nice touches that are often missing from restaurants these days: free hot tea, plate changes mid-meal, and they even packed up our leftovers at the end. It felt like 1995 again! The mapo tofu was tasty and had a kick to it. Their special chicken is fantastic, as always, and the clams were fresh and tasty. Unless anything changes, I'll continue to come back again and again!
google avatar

Tolo G.

Yelp
I always take my family and friends here and they love it. My favorite things to order are the half peking duck, green beans, lettuce wraps, buddha's delight, and won ton soup. Actually their hot and sour is delicious too. You must try their many desserts in the at the cold counter or their tapioca drinks with coconut milk and fresh fruits or grass jelly. Their Hong Kong milk tea will light you up for the night with no crash! Just so many delicious and attention to detail cooking just right. The staff is always nice and the ambiance is a homey feel. The best location I've visited of the Phoenix Boutiques and a staple of Chinatown.

Armando M.

Yelp
Food was fantastic ! The spicy salt chicken wings were perfection . The Yeung chow fried rice (combination) with some chili oil hit the spot. Try the eggrolls for your appetizers! And crispy noodles with seafood to top it all off. Highly recommend this place. Service was very friendly and helpful , inside it was a cozy atmosphere!

Yelp
I normally trust reviews but this review let me down thi food is gross i order from door dash and it seem they did not give me fresh nor properly cooked foood

jeska e.

Yelp
The mango coconut roll is my favorite dessert in LA! Food is always tasty but just a few notes: The "Chinese broccoli" I've gotten is not Gai lan it's just normal broccoli I'm assuming has a "Chinese" sauce on it Mapo tofu has jalapeños in it? If there is sichuan peppercorn in it, it is super mild and not mouth numbing at all. Probably great for most Americans, but if there was an option to get it spicier/more numbing I would be eternally grateful Congee is super comforting and is a great portion side Juices and jellies are all amazing as well.

Yelp
Large orders for Christmas dinner was disappointed with our food. Didn't have too much flavor in everything and they were so busy. Took longer. Expectant overpriced
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
So disappointed. Tried this place based on the more recent good reviews. The food was tasteless and so oily/greasy it was almost inedible. Lo mein was soggy, Mapo tofu portion was incredibly small. So much for a splurge.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
DELICIOUSNESS!!! Soft, tangy, sweet, very tasty. Service is ok. Ambiance you don't eat here for ambience. Outside homeless pee and lay drunk on the sidewalk. Furniture needs updated. But food.... Legit! Like dearly departed Meatloaf said.....2 out of 3 ain't bad.
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Very good!!! All portions are for sharing. We got the $15 per person deal (min 4 people to order this deal). There were 4 of us. Omg we got so much food........ it was great!!!! We got egg flower soup, shrimp egg rolls, pork BBQ, fried rice, chow mein, kung pan chicken and more items I forgot to mention. We were so full.

Kevin S.

Yelp
The best chicken curry I have ever had. Parking isn't easy but worth the trouble. They also deliver by Uber eats which sometimes is easier.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
I grew up on this restaurant. Not sure why people knock customer service. You just have to set your expectations accordingly and you'll discover very delicious Chinese food when you just have a more positive demeanor. My order typically consists of fried pork chops, sautéed string beans, pan fried crispy noodles w/ beef and Chinese broccoli, porridge, hot and sour soup, and more. It's kinda nice having the restaurant to myself if people don't want to frequent this establishment. But I'd highly recommend this spot.

Jessica H.

Yelp
I ordered fried rice and mayo pudding for takeout. The fried rice was ok. A little bland but fine. The mango pudding seemed curdled. The texture of the pudding is not smooth, it's like soft scrambled eggs. It's pretty gross.
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Always solid classic Cantonese comfort food. Wonton noodles, Singapore noodles, most of their noodles, I recommend. But this 5-star is for 白灼生肚. Ginger scallion on fresh pork stomach. One of those IYKYK Cantonese delicacies. Not on printed menu but special dish written in Chinese on the board. No funky taste just deliciousness. Just roll a piece with ginger & scallions in the sauce. Nom nom. The sauce is great on rice too.
google avatar

James I.

Yelp
Ordered via Grubhub, and I wish I noticed which Phoenix I was ordering from. My food was delivered very quick. But in my opinion, the food at this downtown location was okay, but not delicious.
google avatar

Rosalie V.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended from my sister. I was in town and decided to place an online order for the fresh Mango Mochi and the Coconut and Mango rolls. The service was excellent and the Mochi was so soft and the mango inside was very sweet and delicious. I can't wait to come back to LA so I can place another order.
google avatar

Izel V.

Yelp
I love this place. Food is good & the specialty tapioca drinks are better. Staff is not very attentive but it's cool I usually opt for take out here anyways. They are pretty quick with the orders as well so that's nice. Outside area is a little sketchy and street parking is usually available nearby.

Al W.

Yelp
Ordered delivery. Tastes like Hong Kong style food. Beef and Chinese broccoli tasted great. Rice noodle stir fry was really good.
google avatar

Yelp
AUTHENTIC HONG KONG EATS HERE! They are a family owned franchisees and the Chinatown location was their first ever opened location. I've always had such a positive experience here with all the staff members. Always very welcoming and friendly! Must try and my go to meals here are as follows... Hong Kong Stir Fried Noodles (seafood or beef) depending on mood XO Sauce stir fried noodles Thousand Year Egg Porridge (so good on a cold day or when sick) Black Sesame Pudding Durian Rolls (not for the faint / sensitive noses) Milk Fruit Tapioca Drink (A Crowd Favee! Get this for the first timers) And I love all their medicinal TCM brewed teas (:

Gor H.

Yelp
Its not the end if you will not give a tip to waitress they will ask you to tip them for their best service for clean dishes and screaming or serving during talking by phone
google avatar

Elis G.

Yelp
We came here and were seated immediately. They didn't have much many customers so the service was extremely fast. The waitress was extremely friendly and had a great personality. She was very personable and made us feel welcomed. What we ordered: Yeung Chow Fried Rice: The shrimp fried rice was surprisingly good. I typically never order fried rice but this was pretty light and had good flavor. The shrimp was clean, good size and cooked well. They give really large portions which is enough to share with a family. Walnut Shrimp: The walnut shrimp was my favorite. It had so much flavor and it was sweet and paired perfectly. I 100% recommend this. I wish they added more walnuts because we had a lot of shrimp left with no walnuts by the end of the meal. Hong Kong Rice Noodles w/ Beef: I ordered this and was pretty disappointed. The beef tasted like rubber and did not taste like beef one bit. My friend asked "is this suppose to be pork" because she couldn't tell what kind of meat it was... The noodles were not that good either, I wanted to like this meal.. I really did because I ordered it but it was not good. Vegetables: The vegetable platter was really good even though we were overcharged. It was a really good side and they should definitely add it to their menu. We ordered vegetables and our server charged us for Sautéed minced string beans, mushroom & sausage so we were definitely overcharged for what we received.

Yelp
Coconut mango roll.. Delish.. Fresh mango center surrounded in a mango custard and a layer of mochi and covered in shredded coconut. The center looks like a vein with mango flowing surrounded in mango fat.. Damn good and refreshing out of the refrigerator. The food isn't too bad here either but there is a limited dessert and drink menu compared to the Alhambra location.
google avatar

Martin V.

Yelp
I have been eating here for years and the quality of food is amazing. Service is also great the waiter is very attentive and friendly. Food comes out fairly quickly. My go to dishes are chow mien, orange chicken, chicken fried rice , and beef and broccoli. Street parking is meter parking but it's cheaper than paying for parking at the lots.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
*Review for mochi and not food/dine in* My family loves Phoenix's mochi so I knew I had to make a stop to bring some back home on my trip. I got the assortment mochi pack (red bean, matcha, taro, mango), one pack of the mango circular mochis, and 3 packs of the rectangular mango mochis. My best friend and I had one each of the rectangular mochi in the car after we bought them, and it was so good that he went back in to get me 2 more packs of the rectangular mango mochis so that we can bring more back for my family. The mochi skin is soft and thin, and the quality of the mango (sweet and juicy) provides pops of citrus and a refreshing taste with each bite.

Kayarash K.

Yelp
Unfortunately we couldn't stay. We went in and the place reeked. There was a pungent smell in the air like an unventilated bathroom nearby was leaking to this space.
google avatar

Siva M.

Yelp
went here towards closing time because we were craving chinese noodles. i was very impressed with this place! we ordered the house special stir fried noodles w/chicken & duck, chinese sausage fried rice, and the vegetarian fried tofu appetizer. all were amazing! i'll definitely come back.

Mariusz K.

Yelp
greasy, untasty food. The srvice was fine. Instead of meat we got just duck skins. The water spinach was so hard

Karlie N.

Yelp
First time in Chinatown before catching a Dodger game! Stopped here after reading reviews about how authentic and fresh the food is! The reviews were right. The ladies were friendly and the service was QUICK. The food all had such great flavor with high quality ingredients. The restaurant was clean considering the old building and questionable location. Will definitely be back when I'm in the LA area.
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
The food is as expected since it is a chain. My partner and I were quite disappointed, as we ordered WALNUT SHRIMP, BEEF FLAT NOODLES, and the PIG EAR appetizer. Normally that's around $25 - $30 around lunch time. However, it was higher than that. We asked why, and the server told us that small and larger portions were not available and that we could only get the large size. We said ok, and got it. After we got home, not only was the size the average size we normally get from other locations, the order didn't come with rice when it normally does. We were really disappointed in this location and won't be returning. ENJOY!

Yelp
This was an amazing find! My husband and I found this place and was so pleasantly surprised of the quality of the food, the wonderful customer service. We loved the food so much and unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the food except for this great lemon tea. We will be back very soon. Cannot wait!

Anna P.

Yelp
Came here to get the mango pomelo delight drink and some mochi. I looked at my bill and was charged for one of the tables that were sitting and they gave me the mixed fruit delight instead of the mango pomelo. They voided the table charge after I said something and said it was because I was too fast. Anyways, the drink is great, if they don't give you the wrong one and charge you for the more expensive one.

Connie T.

Yelp
The quality and quantity has dropped drastically for the price. Would not order from this place again.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is top notch. The soups remind me of back when I was in Hong Kong, but it still has that West Coast Chinese American vibe. I can recommend it more!!! ~Mark B

Yelp
Friendly staff and delicious food. A decent Chinese place but more Cantonese and some dishes are like Malaysian inspired. Some dishes are delicious and some are just alright. They have some drinks and desserts prepackaged for easy takeouts. The lettuce wrapped chicken is DELICIOUS. Mostly dishes like this is with duck, first time eating with chicken and very pleased. The fried shrimp rolls are amazing but the sauce are a bit off from the authentic one. Cleanliness definitely needs a lot of improvement. The menu is old and sticky, the fork's metal was pretty old that even though it's washed and "clean", it's a bit sticky like some residue. Chopsticks, bowls and plates were fine though. The tables were not the cleanest but not bad at all. The restroom needs big work. Floor is dirty, a funny smell, door needs to be repainted or scrubbed (but doubt that can be scrub anymore), everything else needs a wipe down. Doesn't look like it's ever cleaned and metal handles and mirror have tons of water marks everywhere. Toilet have some dirt accumulated too.

Yelp
The best Phoenix restaurant I've ever been!!! The food and service are great!! Will come back again for sure!
