Phorage - Review - Culver City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The older sibling of our favorite/possibly only back-of-a-minimart pho place in town (ASAP Phorage), the Palms location of Phorage has a similar Vietnamese menu with more of an “I’d be happy to hang out here” vibe. The pho is the big attraction (the washugyu beef is the one to get), but there are also a few banh mis, vermicelli salads, and even a claypot chicken if you want to go big. This is some of our favorite Vietnamese food around." - Jess Basser Sanders

The 20 Best Places for Chicken Wings in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Phorage may be known for their eponymous pho, but their fish sauce wings shouldn’t be missed. The wings are made with Mary’s Chicken and doused in a sweet and sticky sauce, before being served alongside cucumbers, pickled carrots, and lime. Plus, they’re available at both the West LA and West Hollywood locations." - Eater Staff

The Latest Restaurant Ingredient Shortage: Rice Paper | Eater

"A Los Angeles Vietnamese spot whose owner has had difficulty sourcing rice paper wholesale after his preferred Three Ladies brand became unavailable due to a container issue. For the past two to three months he has been driving into the San Gabriel Valley weekly to buy retail rice paper, which raises ingredient costs by roughly 40–50% and imposes significant opportunity costs in time and traffic. He reports similar intermittently unavailable items such as vegetarian stir-fry sauce and gluten-free soy sauce, but considers sourcing rice paper essential because spring rolls are a non-negotiable menu item." - Bettina Makalintal

Google
Nothing special at all about the food, and it’s not particularly cheap. The inside of the restaurant is lacking in decorations, giving it a sort of sterile feeling. Service was fast and attentive, though. Happy hour 3-6 pm, $5 draft beer and $10 draft sake.

Google
Overall this restaurant is a 3 out of 5. Service was good but food is just okay. We got - Wagu beef Pho with beef balls: the broth is not flavorful (trust me when I say it is not flavorful). The good thing here is the beef ball and the Wagu beef. They do give you a good amount of meat - vermicelli noodles with pork: meat isn't tender or flavorful. The egg roll was better than the meat. The fish sauce just okay. - clay pot chicken: a bit too salty. We had to add lime juice to make it more eatable. Rice was good. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Google
Always excited to support a pho restaurant, especially because there's not many on the west side. The fish sauce wings were incredible and ana hai and alvie were great hosts. You can tell they really enjoy the environment!

Google
Atmosphere is amazing. It's nice and relaxing and I can focus on eating my food. Service was great. They're very kind and welcome. I've been looking for a good Pho place since I moved here from the east coast and I think I've found it 10/10 all around.

Google
I’ve finally discovered what Phorage Vietnamese Bistro is all about, and let me tell you, it’s a revelation. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with minimalist modern vibes and a warmth that immediately makes you feel at home. The kitchen doesn’t do smoke and mirrors, just real, honest Vietnamese comfort food prepared with love and finesse.

Google
the food didn’t taste Vietnamese at all. The pho broth is a bit too peppery so would skip. The pork in the vermicelli bowl was cooked well, but the imperial roll also tasted just okay. However you do get a free drink if you leave a google review :)

Google
Best banh mi I've had in years. Freshly cooked pork, perfectly crunchy bread, deeply delicious.

Google
I ordered three dishes: the Imperial Roll, Chicken Clay Pot, and Wagyu Pho, all recommended by the waiter. The Imperial Roll was the highlight of the night, crisp and flavorful, but the portion was tiny with only two rolls. The Chicken Clay Pot was overly salty and sweet, and the serving size felt small as well. The Wagyu Pho was just okay—pleasant but forgettable, with a broth lacking in depth or richness. On the bright side, the service was excellent, and our waiter was attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Wonderful service, the food is delicious, & they accommodate to alterations I got the Vegan Pho, but asked for the Bun Bo Hue broth~

Yelp
the oxtail pho and coriander beef were DELICIOUS. the service was super quick too. will definitely come again.

Yelp
Back when chef Perry was running the restaurant and this was the only location, they served some of the most authentic Vietnamese food in the area. Years later, I finally dined here again and was shocked by how much the taste of the food had declined. The Hispanic ladies now managing the restaurant were very nice and provided great service, but it's painfully obvious that the food is being made by someone who has no idea how Vietnamese food is supposed to taste. We ordered the oxtail pho and banh beo. The pho broth was very dark, while it smelled and tasted heavily of soy sauce. It was so incredibly salty that none of us were able to take more than a few bites. The banh beo was undercooked, gummy, and flavorless. However, the ladies were so nice that we felt bad saying anything when they asked us how the food tasted. It's really sad what this West LA Phorage has become. Good news though - I recently tried the West Hollywood location and the food was significantly better. They also serve delicious cocktails.

Yelp
I grew in orange county, so my standards are pretty high for Vietnamese food. If you are looking for authentic Vietnamese food on the West Side, I would NOT go here. I ordered the washugyu beef pho. The quality of the meat was decent, but the broth was missing the aromatics you would expect in pho. It was decent for soup, but you'll be disappointed if you're expecting a bowl of pho. My friend ordered the spicy lemongrass beef & pork noodle soup (Bún Bò Huế) and this was even more disappointing. I'll give this place the benefit of the doubt since we asked to keep the spice on the side, but this broth tasted nothing like Bún Bò. Typically, the base Bún Bò broth should be flavorful on its own with the chill sauce (ốt sa tế) added on the side for spice. When our Bún Bò came out, the broth tasted almost pho-like and whatever spice on the side was just pepper and lemongrass, not ốt sa tế. Again decent for soup, but not Bún Bò. We were only one of two parties and the service was slow, though it looks like this place is a big takeout joint. We ordered some imperial rolls for apps. These are supposed to come out in six pieces, but only five came out. Our server failed to mention how he dropped one piece on the ground (which my friend saw). Luckily he didn't serve us that.

Yelp
Most average pho restaurant on the west side Ordered a rare steak and tendon pho (with meatball sub) First of all, let's talk about the good stuff. The noodle texture is quite chewy which is nice, and the wagyu rare steak inside the pho is decent. Unfortunately, for a pho that costs $18+, I'm expecting way more than what it taste like.. 1. The broth doesn't taste like beef, so I guess it only makes sense if their broth is vegan to taste this bland. If the broth doesn't even taste the same or better than a instant pho, I think there's nothing much to make it redeemable 2. Point 1 is valid enough to not come back because I had to put a lot of sauce to make the broth taste like something, the broth is literally tasteless, barely any flavour, I could not tell what's the reason why it taste that way 3. Parking is impossible 4. Service is alright Twice is enough, not gonna come back. There are options around the west side Conclusion: Pretty much the worst pho I've had in my life, it doesn't even taste like pho

Yelp
One star for the imperial rolls. The rolls itself were good, crunchy, and served with fresh lettuce and mint. The sauce could be better--the taste is more vinegar taste than it it sweet with no heat. The pho--the presentation is good, however the broth is really bland like watered down. No salt or aromatics from the typical pho spices. It has a lingering unpleasant sour taste to it and not from a fresh lime either. I don't know if it's from something that was spoiled. It was probably the worst pho I have had.

Yelp
I ordered take out from Phorage. The packaging was much appreciated! There was a top container that held all of the noodles and veggies so that they didn't get soggy. The broth was on the bottom part of the container. Vegan Pho - The amount of noodles were abundant but I do wish there were more veggies and a variety of them. It only came with a small amount of chopped bok choy and a handful of tofu. The broth also had a cinnamon like taste which I was surprised about but it was still enjoyable. Not sure if I'd order from here again. I'm a vegetarian so this was the main item I could get. If they improve their veggie selection I would reconsider!

Yelp
Not an authentic pho restaurant. It's more of an Asian Viet fusion as they haves Japanese, American, Mexican viet options. Tldr, would not come here again because it was pricey, bad quality, uncomfortable seating, in Palms, & there's way better viet places on the westside in nicer areas such as Pho Fever Bistro on Barrington. From BEST to LEAST best: * Veggie & Chicken IMPERIAL ROLLS ($12) - the crispy rice paper wrapping was a fun change in pace but the stuffing was soggy, oily, non fresh chop suey vegetables of carrots, mushrooms and very little chicken. There was such a minor almost indistinguishable distinction between the chicken & veggie roll which now explains why both of them cost the same, $12/plate. The rice paper wrapping was slightly chewier than expected too. Would get again. *JIDORI CHICKEN $16 - looks like Yoshinoya but extremely tender and flavorful chicken. Bonus points for such a big portion. I'm not usually a fan for ordering chicken and rice because I can typically grill that myself but at the very least this was an enjoyable dish. Would get again. * THAI TEA - drink was nice since it wasn't that sweet, but the only reason why it wasn't that sweet was because it tasted very watered down and barely tasted like "thai tea." Would not get again even if free. * WAGYU BEEF PHO $17 - broth didn't taste great. More like a residue filled bone broth where you can see the oil layer at the top separate from the beef bone broth residue of the soup. Pho noodles were the right size and consistency but a bit too chewy and hard if you don't let it soak in the soup for a while (reason being is because when we ordered a side pho noodles, the noodles were dried instead of soft & rehydrated first. There were very little noodles per bowl but a generous serving of tender meat. Would not get again. * BIRRIA PHO $16.95 - instead of bean sprouts there were chopped up cabbages. The beef in the soup was more dry and coarse than the wagyu beef. Soup was more of a spicy tomato soup as opposed to an aromatic birria soup. Would not get again. * Chicken WONTON $11 - nothing special. Wonton wrapper was thin. Chicken flavor & filling was ok. Doused in regular soy sauce base. Would not get again. Ambiance: * 3, 4 table seatings of metal chairs and wooden counter tops * One long bar table top with metal bar chairs with no backings * One long face the wall table top with metal chairs with backings * Two bathrooms, semi clean * Free parking lot * Style is casual

Yelp
Phorage was pretty good! We didn't dine in but opted for pickup instead. The location was cute, and they have convenient parking. The to-go packaging is secure and thoughtfully designed. The Wagyu beef pho was great, with a generous amount of beef. However, the chicken pho didn't have much meat, especially when compared to the beef pho. That said, it was still tasty.

Yelp
Still great pho even delivered, plus reheats well the next day. Great on a cloudy day or if you're under the weather.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner on a Monday evening and it was a chill spot. We got seated immediately. Credit cards only (no cash). There is a small parking lot with free parking. Indoor dining available. We ordered the wagyu beef pho, chicken pho, and imperial rolls. Our server was nice and efficient. Overall, a good spot for a casual meal out.

Yelp
Food is standard Vietnamese fare - the Pho is decent, on par with other places in the West LA area We were harassed by someone the businesses appear to have hired when we tried to walk to the next door market after buying food. Despite the lot being completely empty. Will not being spending our money here again. Edit - thanks for responding so quickly Phorage! We live in the neighborhood and we're really surprised by this since it seemed reasonable to keep our car here for 15 minutes after spending our money. And if not that's okay too but a creepy man sitting by the dumpster does not seem like the way to enforce this. He was really rude and was filming us as we drove away.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for pho outside of the SGV (along with Blossom). The pork bahn mi has fresh, crunchy bread and crunchy vegetables with pork that melts in your mouth, and the waygu beef pho is excellent and comes in a giant portion. No skimping on the bean sprouts here. Definitely a good change from a lot of the overly watery, flavorless pho in the city.

Yelp
This is the only hormone free- range chicken pho I could find in town! It is delicious and you can tell there is no MSG just clean broth and noodles! Yummy! Great service and a small family owned atmosphere.

Yelp
The food were very good. Personally like the spicy one the most. And the serve lady was kind and sweet. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Good beef pho. Service was great too, very nice and helpful staff. They are located in a small shopping center. Overall chill vibe.

Yelp
I mainly wrote this because of the free drink, but I have a lot of great things to say about Phorage. I've been here before countless times, and it's always been great food, great staff and sometimes great encounters with strangers. The decor also makes for good ambiance.

Yelp
got the vegetarian pho and lemongrass pork banh mi last time. not necessarily "authentic" but still tasted pretty good. I always love taking the thai basil cuttings home and propagating them; the server was extra nice and offered to give me extra cuttings :p

Yelp
Walked in after a Yelp search for banh mi. I'm glad I did! Upon entering I was seated quickly. One other person dining in as I order. Imperial rolls and pork belly banh mi on the way. Cooked and served very quickly. Imperial rolls were good. Cut into thirds which I've never seen but helpful for sharing I suppose- mint, lettuce, fish sauce all work well in the bite. Banh mi served w a large portion of pork, and freshly sliced jalepenos. Good amount of veggies but I almost prefer more veggies and *gasp* dare I say: less meat. I felt the ratio meat to veggies was very generous on the meat side. I made the imperial rolls disappear and had to save 2/3 of the banh mi for later. I'll be back!

Yelp
After passing this place on Venice Blvd. Today was a great day for pho. It was cold and dreary. I had the ban mih sandwich and the brisket pho. Both were delicious, and the service was great! since it's on my way home, I definitely will be back.

Yelp
Decided to stop in and eat @phoragela in #LA on Overland tonight (Wednesday). Small inside but was seated right away by a sweet lady at the front who was also our waitress. She was very attentive. Crispy chicken dumplings - fried perfectly and tasty Oxtail Pho - Oxtail was plentiful and tender. Broth was very flavorful as well. I love spicy so added a lot of Siracha and red chili paste. Yum! Parking: small lot but found a spot Loved the 80s music playing in the background.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with my girlfriend and the service was good. She ordered the imperial rolls and the chili wontons, both of which she said were great. I ordered the oxtail pho which, like other reviews mentioned, lacked the traditional flavors which made pho delicious. Honestly was more similar to a salty beef broth than pho. Either way, I'd come by to try it for yourself!
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
Just came here with my kids for the first time Service was very nice and attentive. It's clean, good music, perfect for indoor seating. And the food was so yummy And tasted fresh! Try the spicy beef + pork pho! Also the portions are very filling and kid approved for flavor( I have picky kids)

Yelp
Bun no hue was full of flavor and spicy! Def coming back to try the rest of their menu. Very caring and attentive staff.

Yelp
Great service and great atmosphere. The staff is nice and friendly. One of the best pho I've had in town.

Adam G.

Yelp
I went once and DONE! This is for people WHO DO NOT KNOW what Pho is. I ordered a chicken Pho. They gave it to me in a weird bowl where the noodles were separate but in the same bowl as the Soup. They put like a half inch of broth!!!! ‍ Everyone knows the broth is what you want. I figured it was an out of town/hipster spot.... And it is.
google avatar

Krista C.

Yelp
Solid little joint. Good portion sizes and loved all the sauces. Parking on street or in parking lot. I checked in and got a free Tha iced tea. Jidorri chicken was good and the fresh shrimp and pork spring rolls. Super fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Yasmeen S.

Yelp
I would not recommend the pho from here. The broth was very bland and the noodles were soggy. They give you a decent amount of meat but everything else was not really worth it. However, the service was top notch! I didn't get his name but he was very attentive to our table (party of 7) and was very friendly.
google avatar

Jung Hee L.

Yelp
I came here today. When I opened the door and came in, I liked the warm and simple interior. I ordered pho and the pho tasted good. The service was friendly and the food was ordered and served quickly. I would like to recommend this place to everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried Phorage for the first time. The host was friendly and there was parking in the small strip mall lot. My fiancé and I both got the oxtail pho. It was crazy salty...I've never had pho like this before; definitely like what you'd get in Westminster or San Jose. The portion of oxtail was appreciated but there could have been more noodles. I honestly couldn't finish the pho because it was so salty.
google avatar

Yelp
Long overdue review! We've been coming to Phorage for years and love it! Fresh flavors, authentic and creative spins on Vietnamese favorites, and always the best ingredients. Our faves are the caramel fish sauce wings, papaya salad, and the vermicelli noodle. But the pho and banh mi are also stellar. LA is losing its mid priced restaurants and this one is a gem!

Shea L.

Yelp
I LOVEEEE phorage, I have been coming here for the past 10 years and it never misses! I usually get the Vegan Pho with chicken broth! A must try for sure ! The tofu is so delicious!
google avatar

Eliza E.

Yelp
Visiting from Texas and decided to stop in before the airport. The food was great! Service was fast and our server was sweet. We got the imperial rolls (eggs rolls), vermicelli beef and chicken bahn mi. Bahn mi, eggs rolls and thai tea were my fav!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice ambiance and friendly staff! If you're looking for a good meal look no further. The beef pho is solid.
google avatar

Yelp
Good location with good parking out front. Greeted by Alvi who was the homie and gave us good recommendations. Ended up getting the wagyu beef pho and shrimp+pork spring rolls. Food was solid, definitely will be coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was really tasty! We got the crispy chicken dumplings , the garlic noodles with chicken & a fried egg + the waygu pho. Portions were shareable which was perfect. Service was good.
google avatar

Bryant A.

Yelp
Favorite local pho restaurant never disappoints especially the Spicy Lemongrass pho, decided to also try the shrimp and pork spring rolls
google avatar

Neena D.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite pho places in LA. The broth, noodles and the portions were perfect. Recently, my order has gotten more expensive via Uber Eats. Who pays $22.00 without delivery for pho? My last few orders, I have gotten less noodles and the noodles were stale and didn't soften in the broth. This via Uber Eats is so disappointing and a waste of money. Do not order from here because they lack attention to detail and are starting to cheat long standing customers. They also often forget any additions to your order Please see the business owners response. Slightly defensive don't you think? Who pays 19.00 for pho? Period.
google avatar

Angelina L.

Yelp
Was amazing. Let just say it was spicy but of course if you're like me I added extra jalapeños, lime and chili paste waitress advised us that we can get a free drink with a review. But this was a good choice to make last minute for dinner.
