The Best Restaurants on Nantucket | Eater Boston

"Pi Pizzeria began in the back of a wine and cheese shop on Nantucket in 2001. By 2006 they had their own space and they’ve been slinging wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas there ever since. Choose from classic Italian recipes like marinara and margherita or go local with a New England white clam edition. The family-friendly spot also serves subs and pastas." - Celina Colby

One of the best pizza’s I have ever had. Great crust and unique, fresh toppings. Service by Greg was also fantastic! $7 per coke/ice tea, AND an additional $7 per refill is absolutely wild work though!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a charming little pizza place on Nantucket, and it was truly a delightful experience. The cozy atmosphere immediately made me feel at home, and the intimate setting added to the overall charm. Now, let's talk about the star of the show—the pizza. Cooked in a wood-fired oven, it had that unmistakable smoky flavor that only comes from such traditional cooking methods. The crust was perfectly crispy on the outside, yet wonderfully chewy on the inside. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, from the tangy tomato sauce to the melty cheese and the delectable toppings. It was undoubtedly one of the best pizzas I've ever had. When on Nantucket it’s a must visit.

Usually I am not a person that leaves reviews, but I would love some answers on this. The pizza itself is a decent run of the mill pizza. Obviously for the price, I would love a bit more out of it, but I understand that prices on Nantucket can be a bit inflated. With that being said, I really just need some answers on the Family Size salad. Once we saw the price of $90 for a salad, we were already perplexed by seeing that, but were optimistic on what the salad would be like. For $90, you get a small tin tray of approximately 1 large grocery store bag of romaine, about 1 slice of bread cut up into strips for garlic bread, 3 lemon slices, and a soup cup bowl that was 1/3 full with dressing. Yes, I get the “it’s just Nantucket” with some inflated pricing, but this is something you can recreate for yourself over at the grocery store for maximum $10-15. I know we can sit here and say that we just shouldn’t have ordered it, but we were hoping we would at least get something that would satisfy us, but instead were given one of the saddest salads for the price I have ever seen. I would love some sort of reasoning for the pricing on this. For $90 on a caesar salad, I would hope this thing would have blown me out of the water, but I would hope every single person moving forward would PLEASE save their money.

Google
Very quick and friendly service. The pepperoni pizza was great. We also got the Sicilian sub, which was good, but definitely could've used a bit more meat or at least a thinner bread. Overall, we enjoyed our time.

Google
Waited 2 hours for my takeout pizza to get a completely burnt pie and horrible assistance when I called to notify the restaurant.

Google
This place is the bomb so that being said summertime it’s crazy. Even spring and fall are busy! Been here dozens of times if you like Italian food, I highly recommend it treat yourself to an awesome meal! Believe me, I have tried almost everything on their menu it’s awesome. Just give them a little patience when it’s super busy, thank you PI Pizzeria!

Google
Nice and cozy restaurant - I really liked the artwork and the details. Warm atmosphere. Ricotta Manicotti were my favorite of our choices

Google
Best Pie on the Island ? Must try to appreciate. Best steak on the island, I like how it’s cooked ! Staff is very friendly, no reservations so you might have to wait. Get a cocktail at Kitty Murtaghs across the street while you wait for a table

Yelp
The food was yummy and service was nice. No free refills here which bugged me. Overall nice dinner. We didn't get the steak and gnocchi this time but it's wonderful also.

F S.

Yelp
2.5 Stars - A good attempt at bad New York style pizza. Paying 4$ more for dollar slice quality. If you're going for other food you might have a better time.

Yelp
Been eating here for at least 15 years, one of probably 2 or 3 restaurants we frequent on Nantucket. Food is predictably excellent, arrives hot, with pleasant service. Been hearing for years about how great their steak is, but have never been able to resist the pizza. Tonight my son and I finally ordered the steak and can confirm the reviews: it was outstanding. Medium rare, tender, hot, with great pan jus, gnocchi on the side. Just fantastic.

Alleese V.

Yelp
Small and quaint. Bar service while you wait for your table. Delicious pizza and kind service.

Yelp
The restaurant small. We were seated by 5:15. We ordered a clam pizza to start then an eggplant parmigiana and lasagna for our main course. First the pizza came out lukewarm at best with dried up clams on top of the crust. There was no flavor and tasted like day old bad pizza. Which it could have been given we were the first clients of the evening. Both main courses were lukewarm except the side of pasta which was overcooked but hot. The eggplant was mushy as was the lasagna. Neither had any flavor. Our waitress was lovely and attentive. It was a huge disappointment

Yelp
We love the crust -- which is a true NYC-style crust, glutinous, thin and yes, foldable! -- but the toppings leave something to be desired. A Margherita ($21) came with no tomatoes, a thick slather of sauce (actually of good quality, but just in too high of a ratio), and almost no mozzarella. The little mozzarella on the pie was "fresh" as in it came in brick form rather than in shredded form -- but it wasn't tender as it ought to've been. And there may have been three 1/2 mm slivers of basil present. Pepperoni pizza ($23) included the most minute amounts of pepperoni, cut into thin strips and nearly invisible on the pie. Man. The crust does a lot for us -- but it can't go all the way!

Caroline D.

Yelp
What the heck?!? Pi Pizzaria, could you care less? This was the one of the worst pizzas I have ever tasted. It's not even fair to call it pizza. Come on guys, I know you probably don't care but could you care a little? $25 for what's called a large, you'd be kicked out of every city nationwide for trying to call this pizza. It's an abomination. floppy, no taste, gross, inedible. You should be ashamed. What a bummer.

Small J.

Yelp
Peeza was good why was the water 20$? I had no idea that they were going to charge me 20 dollars for water.

Kate N.

Yelp
all 3 of our pizzas were burnt and very dry. One, strangely had a burnt edge crust, yet the bottom crust was really undercooked. Won't be getting pizzas from them anymore. So sad, as they have always been a treat in the past.

Yelp
This was excellent stone fired pizza on Nantucket. In addition to having some very high quality food, they were absolutely accommodating of our extremely large Boy Scout group (we had 11 scouts, and 7 adults). Sizes of the large pizza are decent. I would comment pricing is high but given the price of everything on Nantucket they are completely reasonable compared to cost of everything else. Super friendly staff and the only complaint from anyone was they still wanted more food after everything was done. Inside was packed and everyone seemed very happy with their meals from what we could sense. Not a bad choice if you are wanting a nicer quality pizza.

Yelp
I give this a solid 3. I ordered the Great Italian pizza, Large (16") and a side of garlic bread. The service was great. Pizza is just OK, but not great. Flavor is there, but check out the photos. There's barely any toppings. I think a GREAT Italian pizza would have at least double the toppings as what I received. Even if they just increased the onions and peppers they'd make it so much better without costing them a lot. Also, the center was quite soggy, with lots of sauce, so it was super saggy. The garlic bread was meh. It definitely seemed like store-bought bread, serving was really small for $7 and the flavor wasn't great. I give it a 3 because it's not good enough to automatically want to go back for more. I'm definitely going to try other pizzas on the island.

Yelp
This place is great! They have a nice outdoor patio. (Dog friendly too) Service was great. Pizza and the minestrone soup were excellent. Perfect on a chilly evening in Nantucket!

Yelp
If you are visiting Nantucket Pi Pizza is a MUST! The food is incredible, they don't just sell amazing pizza, they also have one of the best steaks I've ever had. The staff is friendly and the vibe is perfectly cozy.

Yelp
Pizza - 3 stars. Service - 1 star. Worst service on the island. Rude, inattentive server (Friday lunch) who couldn't be bothered to do her job.

Yelp
Ordered a clam pizza. Got rubber bands on a piece of stale bread. Stay away. Check your bowels after eating here

Neil P.

Yelp
If you want the pizza- go, sit down, order, and eat it there- Don't take it out. Pi is also a bit of a strange restaurant all in all- The owner Evan is cool- but there is an unusual vibe to it which is hard to describe but it definitely exists- a bit creepy I must say and I am not the first to say this. The Mussels and or Clams en Brodo I love- they don't make the bread for dipping but it's kinda perfect for the simple dish- San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, basil. They have some little piddly antipasto choices which are just kinds general and not great- sort of an after thought IMO . Parmagiana. Chicken & Veal are good but very American style with pasta Marinara. Risotto- haven't ordered it but I am very particular about this- it can be great, good, average or horrible- There is a great little market where you pick up your takeaways with European items- Italian cookes and beverages, You can grab wine, Beer crackers and I think some cheeses, Olive oil for sure- Really Good stuff. The take away. It is all in all mostly- very good- One thing- Cocktails are good but a bit overpriced for the space. The bar is a local haunt for sure. I have been there many, many times and will likely to go continue for sure.

Yelp
We ordered three of their speciality pizzas. The clam pizza was my least favorite as it was a tad dry. I would have preferred more of a garlic oil on top. The great Italian pizza was everyone's favorite. Also, you can't go wrong with the margherita pizza. The tomato sauce is fantastic!

Yelp
We called a pizza in for pick up and waited close to 2 hours but it was a Sunday night so I can't blame them too much there.. definitely a popular spot. The pizza was solid no complaints there. I'd recommend going inside for a meal rather than ordering for pick up. The fried mozzarella was great!

Yelp
NO stars whatsoever!!! BAD, BAD news! I CANNOT get over the disrespectfulness that I just experienced this evening. I called this place, and told the boy who answered that I would like to have dinner at an outside table, and that I would probably like to order pizza, and I would have liked a Caesar salad as well. He told me that there would be a long wait, and that there were 50 pizzas ahead of mine and that I should order ahead, and to go ahead and order it. I told him that I would have walked forty five minutes to get there, was almost there, and that I would sit at the table as soon as I arrived. When I arrived, he repeated and repeated in a loud voice that it would take an hour and a half, and that there were a lot of orders ahead of mine. I arrived at 6PM. He never said that I should order from a waiter, or be seated by a hostess. So, I waited and waited at the table, a party of ten and a party of four came and sat down and I watched them get their food. I asked the waiter for a drink, and said that I would like to order a Caesar salad from him, because the first guy where I placed the pizza order didn't ask me whether I wanted one. He also didn't ask whether I wanted an appetizer or a salad, which I did. The waiter bought the drink, but not the salad, and disappeared! I sat longer and longer and longer, and then. a Hostess came up to me and very meanly announced to me that they would need the table for people who are eating in! She was so very nasty, demanding to know how I ordered my food, and who gave me the drink! The party of ten right next to me we're eating their pizzas! I had to insist that I be allowed to be served and eat my dinner as I had planned. Why in the world would I walk forty five minutes to carry a pizza back??? Do NOT EVER go to this place, as I certainly will NOT!!! The hostess said to me, next time you come, you need to do things the way WE like to do them. Funny, the person who answers the phone doesn't even know how that is... At quarter to 9, I asked the hostess about when I would get the food, , and said that I was really upset about this experience, very hungry, and should I just leave? She said that she was sorry, and didn't know about the situation going on... She said the pizza would be ready in 15 minutes, so I waited some more, but it was closer to thirty. By then it was dark and cold, and there was no one else sitting outside. I thought for certain they would apologize, and finally just give me the pizza, so I called a cab to drive me back. The cab arrived, in 20 minutes, but the pizza had still not been brought to the table, so I went inside, and asked if it was ready yet, and told the rude guy that I had a cab waiting. I said surely after this fiasco you wouldn't expect me to pay for it. He said, of course we would, you just took up our table for 3 1/2 hours! Then, he wouldn't let me pay for the pizza, or let me take it! He said we don't want your business, I don't care if you write a review, and don't come back here, or I'll call the police! The hostess then came back and said, we served a lot of food to people tonight, but not to you! This is certainly an alternate universe at Pi pizza, one you don't want to be a part of, and to think, I had been giving them business since they first opened, roughly 20 years ago. The inexperienced rude kids that they have there now, are VERY bad for business.

Yelp
If you want to spend $300 to have staff reaching over your head to clear things the entire time you eat come here! Seriously I've never eaten a meal and had 8 different servers crowding around me like ovulating chimpanzees at the city zoo. Not to mention the minuscule plates of sub average pasta that costs more than my round trip ferry ticket over here.

Scott L.

Yelp
We love Pi. Pizza is great. Bartenders make fantastic drinks. This year we had some pasta specials and the steak which are equally tremendous. The small space can result in extended wait times, but it is worth it. Enjoy!

Erin H.

Yelp
if you live on the island, this is one of the top three best pizzerias my wife's favorite dinning in its romantic, takeout is great, but I'd rather eat it hot out of the oven if you don't have any patience and you're here in the summer don't bother go home we don't need your rude Condescending attitude! Thank you to the family of pie for the excellent food you serve!!

Nancy Y.

Yelp
Going downhill. Pickup was terrible. We used to like this pizza if we could get a table but pickup. Just don't bother doing pickup it was a total disappointment ....pizza was half cooked and runny. Lasagna to go .....a gooey mess slopped in a plastic container. Ordered cake just one slice, small only a 1/2 inch slice for $14.00. $98 for everything with tip. Won't be back anymore. Ever.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Called to order pizza 3 hours early, only to be hung up on as soon as they answered. Finally connected again for the lady on the phone ably to be RUDE and disrespectful. I understand that you have a busy business, but that doesn't give you the right to be rude. I was raised to respect others and not treat people poorly. Eventually your business will die down and this will be based on how to you treat people. I absolutely would not recommend this Pi Pizza to anyone! How we treat others is important!

Yelp
Was excited to eat at Pi since it's been two years since I have been to the island. Waited at the door at 5:00 for it's 5:30 opening to be sure to get a table. Not sure what has happened in my two year sabbatical.. such a disappointing meal.. The antipasti presentation as I remember used to be on a beautiful wood board.. this visit, 5 items were crammed onto a round white plate, not good presentation. Olive tapenade still tasty, can't go wrong with imported meats and roasted garlic. Ordered a margherita and white clam pizza pi... How can one serve a burnt blackened crusted pizza and expect the customer to eat it? That was our margherita pi.. The white clam pi... cold clams thrown on top of a pizza crust.. and I mean cold, right out of the fridge cold.. Ordered the Tuscan Bean soup.. a bowl of salt!! The server did take it away, and replaced it with a 'freshly made' one... explains the saltiness.. must have been the bottom of the pot left over from lunch. The risotto special; Meyer lemon- not special at all. Lacked flavor. How about charging $$ for a white truffle pasta - a small bowl of buttered pasta - then truffle shaved on top.. again - not special at all. The penne ragu on the salty side, average at best, but the worst was mushy pasta - not al dente at all. I was really looking forward to coming to Pi, it is the first place we planned for dinner. Truly a disappointment to this ultimate foodie.

Grayson S.

Yelp
This place is the best pizza and service on the island. Make sure to get there early as there will be a wait but it is definitely worth it.

Lawrence A.

Yelp
Don't bother to call ahead and place a takeout order. First, they tell you it will be about an hour, twenty before it will be ready. When you finally show up 1:20 later and give them your name, they expect to be paid, right then and there. Then expect to wait around another 25 minutes while they actually put your pizza in the oven. Another words I doubt they take orders over the phone at all. Do yourself a favor, walk over to the Stop&Shop and buy a yourself a frozen pizza.

Melissa M.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza and great Italian home cooking. Also has a nice small store selling Italian wine, beer, olive oil and other Italian comestibles. Be warned - in summer you need to plan ahead and place your take out order at 4pm. If you want great pizza done in 20-30 min come back November-May.
google avatar

Jennings H.

Yelp
Let me list the issues.... It should be less than 1. We called at 5:30, when they open, and they stated it would be an hour for pick up. What we ordered wasn't ready (the Pizza), it would be another 30 minutes, for the Pizza. Finally, after 1.5 hours the pizza was ready. When we got home, EVERYTHING was cold. The pasta had VERY little sauce, and had no flavor. The portions were small (especially a spaghetti for $26.00). A pizza place that can not do spaghetti and pizza even decent? I would NOT recommend this place...
google avatar

Jeff F.

Yelp
Food was fine, a bit bland and pedestrian, but service was poor. Nice enough but completely inattentive. Took a half an hour to get get drinks, another half hour to get appetizers (upon request). Others served and gone while we sat and waited. No checking in on the table. Comped desert to climb back into favor which was an appreciated gesture. Maybe it was just an off night, but not a great dining experience.

Katy R.

Yelp
Just okay. Server unfriendly and disinterested. No smile or welcome. Food okay. Salad dressing served in a small decanter and there's no way to shake it or mix it. So all you get is the oil on top. Nothing special.
google avatar

Yelp
Literally just got done eating the pizza here!!If you are looking for authentic thin crust wood fired pizza!! This is your place!! Ordered a cheese and a pepperoni. Both pizzas came out a little well done perfect!!The sauce was delicious as well as the cheese and pepperoni on both pizzas!! My wife and I are both Italian and the pickiest people in the world. This place surpassed our expectations!!

Esme H.

Yelp
I love pi!! The pizzas are so delicately made. The sauce is amazing, and the crust is crispy. They do not put too much cheese, but I also love the "marinara" red pie. The salads are fine but not the best. The staff is helpful and friendly. I also love the Italian atmosphere. We have ordered pizza, pasta, and dessert here year after year and it is always delicious!!
google avatar

Josh D.

Yelp
Visiting my uncle for a week and he highly recommended the steaks here. We went on a Friday evening and had about a 25 minute wait. Wait was pleasant, host immediately directed us to the bar and then patio. Bartender made us two very generous drinks and we waited outside on the patio. Wait time was accurate and we were seated in the small dining room. Waiter was good, efficient and friendly but not overly so. We both ordered steaks. Really well cooked and delicious. The meat was very tasty and I prefer steaks cooked the way they do them here. My wife's medium was just a tad over but my medium rare was just right. Gnocchi and vegetable delicious. No room for desert. Great date restaurant. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Sally G.

Yelp
I love dining here! The pizza is phenomenal and they are always so consistent with their food. It's always a pleasure being able to eat good pizza on the island whether it's at the restaurant or take-out on the beach. It's always solid, quality food.
google avatar

Malcolm B.

Yelp
The pizza at Pi Pizzeria is outstanding. It is classic Italian artisan pizza made in a wood gas oven. The pasta and entrees are delicious and the nightly specials are not to be missed. They also have the best steak on Nantucket. I am shocked at the negative reviews. These people complaining about a wait for pizza in July and August. What do you expect? They have one oven. The wait is not that long most of the year. Everything is great, I love this restaurant and eating at the Bar.
google avatar

Holly E.

Yelp
Had the best pizza! So glad we decided to go here. We are always looking for good pizza and can be hard to find. This stuff was thin, the sauce tasted great and cheese perfect. We also sat at the bar and the bartender was super fun and friendly. Cant wait to go back and try more stuff!

Casey M.

Yelp
Some of the worst pizza I have ever had. The margarita pizza is jar sauce spread on cardboard. There's maybe 2 slices of mozzarella on the entire pizza and I couldn't find a single piece of basil.
google avatar

Ivy G.

Yelp
Great pizza and italian food. Best place on island for italian. Long wait for take out and sit in for the summer but great place to frequent in the off season.
google avatar

Honey D.

Yelp
My favorite Pizza on Nantucket! Great ambiance, excellent food, friendly staff.

Richard S A.

Yelp
Online pizza menu prices need to be updated. $17 cheese pie rang up to $36 with additions that were double + then as listed. BUT piping hot at assigned p/u time.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
Being spoiled from Neapolitan style pizzas in NY, I have to say I was not impressed with Pi. You would think having an hour wait for pizza would mean they're amazing. Not so much. It's good but not great. The dough-topping balance could be better. Their hot subs were also a bit lacking in flavor.
google avatar

Vin D.

Yelp
Best brick oven pizza - anywhere!!! Made to perfection - the proof in the taste of the quality ingredients. Oh that brick oven crust, Bellissimo!! Other dishes good too - they make a great risotto dish (when it's on the menu) and the broccoli rabe with sausage - excellent. Oh yea and an outstanding osso bucco. Nice place and nice people. on island usually twice a year and been going here since it opened. Always treated well.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
If you are on Nantucket and like pizza, you have to brave the lines and waits to sit down inside and enjoy a properly made pizza from 3.1415926.... It's just first rate and you need to try them !

Amy L.

Yelp
Ordered 2 margarita pizzas and when i opened them up at home I found that between the 2 of them there was maybe 1 whole small basil leaf cut up on them. Very disappointing...see the photos I attached...pathetic is a word to describe a margarita pizza with this lack of basil on it.

Yelp
Pi Pizzeria had been on my Nantucket Eats list for several years. But, weekends always went by so fast, summers abruptly ended, and then I missed hitting Pi once again. So when planning a trip for WineFest this year, a friend asked what my dining requirement would be (clearly my friends get me!) and I immediately said Pi Pizzeria. My review here is very simple: BEST Chicken Parmesan EVER. The ragu sauce addition is a must. I only wish they delivered off island.

Woodfinn L.

Yelp
Called 2 hours in advanced at 4:45 at to place an order for a carry out and they told me too late-the absolute earliest they could have a pizza for us was three hours from now. Not conciliatory or helpful in any way. Keep in mind they don't even answer phones until 3 pm. I would recommend putting a notice on your website that orders need to be placed many hours in advanced so more people's plans aren't foiled. Businesses that act like the customer need them more than they need the customer rub me the wrong way.

Yelp
Best pizza on island! All of their pizzas are amazing , as are the pastas and everything else. You will not be disappointed. And I'm from New York. The service is spectacular and they have a great wine list. The tiramisu is not to be missed. You will not be disappointed. Special shout out to Greer, who took us in right at closing and couldn't have been more gracious and awesome! We will be back!!

Bill B.

Yelp
Being from NYC good pizza is hard to find outside of the city. Very good pizza, cool vibe, small portions for the money $$$$, ordered take out two pasta dishes 1 pizza $80+. Midtown prices you'd expect bread with your meal fellas. I will say their Ragu was delicious meatballs weren't bad.
