The Best Restaurants In Roscoe Village

"Based on how busy it gets, it seems like the whole neighborhood goes to this Italian spot. Piazza Bella’s long dining room is often packed with couples drinking wine, tables of parents, grandparents, and hungry children, and the occasional college students capitalizing on complimentary bread and drinking beer at the bar. The tender chicken parm with spaghetti and saucy brisket tortellini are some of our pasta favorites, and we like snacking on the peppery, crispy calamari once all of the free bread is gone." - john ringor

Piazza Bella Review - Roscoe Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Piazza Bella is a Roscoe Village Italian spot that works as a great catchall for all sorts of dining needs. Date night? Piazza Bella. Family in town? Piazza Bella. Fresh out of Bertolli and Trader Joe’s marinara? Piazza Bella. And based on how busy it gets, it seems like everyone in the neighborhood goes here. The long dining room is often packed with couples drinking wine, tables of parents, grandparents, and hungry children, and the occasional college students capitalizing on complimentary bread and drinking beer at the bar. The tender chicken parm with spaghetti and saucy brisket tortellini are some of our pasta favorites, and we like snacking on the peppery, crispy calamari once we’ve eaten all of the free bread." - John Ringor

Where to Eat and Drink in North Center | Eater Chicago

"A Roscoe Village standby, Piazza Bella has been serving handmade pastas in a relaxed and inviting Tuscan-inspired space for nearly two decades. Be sure to try the homemade burrata, which is true to the traditional incarnation with a solid outer casing of mozzarella stuffed with curds of creamy stracciatella di bufala. The menu is marked with chef’s recommendations, but even if it weren’t it would be difficult to make a wrong choice." - Brandon Summers-Miller

I love this place! I had the fried calamari and seared scallops. The breading on the calamari was light; the scallops were perfect. This is my go to place for great Italian food. Great atmosphere for relaxed dining.

Google
Perfect place for a date night or night out with friends or family. This is an amazing neighborhood spot with delicious food! We always share entrees— the agnolotti, salmon, and sautéed calamari were all divine. We will have to come back to try many of the dishes we saw going out to other tables. Wine list has great variety and plenty of amazing Italian options to choose from.

Google
Very good Italian food. Good inside and outside eating. Really, really good bread and olive oil served when you sit down. Expensive but delicious drinks (spicy marg was very good!). All the food was really good and some of the pasta was handmade. Not the biggest portions for the price (pretty pricey) but nice for a date night or splurge dinner.

Google
Great neighborhood Italian restaurant in Roscoe Village with outdoor patio. It's close to my office so it's convenient for a business meal or casual happy hour drinks. Food has been delicious every time I have been with my guests also in agreement. The Cappelini pasta is simple but delicious and the beet salad is great! Highly recommend if you are in the area or looking for a new place to try!

Google
Piazza Bella IS the only place for Italian food, real pasta!!! We drive from Waukesha, WI to enjoy a meal here when we are able to and have never been disappointed. This visit my Mom came along with us and she completely agrees! The food, the service, the atmosphere are all top notch!!! And you are treated so wonderfully 😊 We love it here!!

Google
The food is great the p proportions are strong, but just a few little touches and garnish would go along. I just feel like you’re just a hint of fresh on top or a freshly grated parmigiano Riano over my pasta a little thing we bring this whole restaurant experience over the top bingo bingo five star, but they just seem to lack the finishing touches keep wanting more more

Yumm!! All the dishes we ordered were delicious. Full bar service. The service was excellent as well. Seating is available indoors and outdoors. Perfect for date night or a family gathering. Metered street parking was easy to find on a Saturday, for a 6pm reservation.

Google
This is one of my favorite local date night spots and I fear the day TikTok finds out about it. Whenever I need a last minute reservation where I know the food and service will be amazing, I come to Piazza Bella. The bread they bring you first is reason enough to go - I love the crunchy cheesy one. Their fried goat cheese blew our minds last time we went, that’ll become a regular order for me. I also get the farfalle every time because I’m convinced nothing can be better. The portions here are also huge and will usually last me for 2 additional meals, which is an extra treat!

Heather E.

Yelp
The food is so good, so comforting. The sauce with the agnolotti is rich. Same for the farfalle. Everything we've had is top notch.

Yelp
This strikes me as the kind of place that sticks around solely because it's on the strip. Servers seemed to be assigned tables with no order, as our server (who was good) was never in our area, but had tables inside, outside, and on the other side of the restaurant. The dishes we ordered were just fine, but I don't see why we'd want come back when we've had tastier food nearby, often with a MUCH better price point. People were running around and shouting, our waters and table bread were delayed nearly to matching up with our entrees, but the joint wasn't even half full. Not a bad meal, but with little to no charm, a steep price point, and a menu that was uninspired I can't say we'll ever need to go back.

Yelp
Our first time dining at Piazza Bella while visiting friends in Roscoe Village. We were served two excellent Italian meals the Ravioli and Pork chop entrees and the eggplant appetizer. Service is prompt friendly.

Yelp
Went on a dinner date here. It was great. Sat at a high top, which was actually comfortable and had enough room on the table for everything we ordered. We shared the calamari, it comes with some type of tomato vodka sauce (I think) and red pepper flakes-- super tasty! I also had the farfalle -- it was amazing! I would so go back for this. Portions are a great size!

Yelp
Devoured our pastas in minutes, food was delicious. Great cozy and casual spot for friends or date night.

Yelp
I don't really have anything good to say about this place. 45 minutes before anyone took our food order. When it came it was just not good. Dry and flavorless. I've had better frozen pizza. You might think "it can't possibly be that bad!" But you'd be wrong.
google avatar

Miri H.

Yelp
The food is great and we love the atmosphere. The service is also pretty good, however, management should really consider having a bartender at dinner service on the weekends when they get busy. Because there is no bartender, the servers seem to be responsible for making the drinks for their tables, so they spend a LOT of the time behind the bar. It is really difficult to put in additional orders for drinks and dessert because your server is stuck behind the bar, and when you do finally put in the order it takes a long time to receive the food. Last time we were there we waited 20 minutes after putting in our dessert order (for which we had to also wait until our server produced 3 cocktails for 2 different tables until she checked in to get the dessert order) before we got it and ended up asking to have it boxed to take home. No blame to the servers because we see them hustling, but service is slow when they are doing 2 jobs.

Yelp
The food is average and the staff is rude but what are you going to do. This is the only Italian place on roscoe so they get business. I wish another Italian restaurant opens up so they get some competition.

Yelp
We arrived at 430 to a locked door with staff sitting at bar. Finally let in. We ate our salads before our waiter even took our entree order. Our waiter continued to take a sit at the bar in between servicing us he was not busy. The farfalle pasta was OK. The chicken was so dry and the Caesar salad needed more dressing. It was a disappointment to say the least.

Yelp
This place is under reviewed and most of the reviews are old- it's a gem! Cute, cozy interior for a nice date nice, or you can even bring kids like the table next to us did! We started with the homemade burrata which was one of the best I've had in a while. The balsamic was really nice on it. I got the potato ravioli and he got the vodka pasta. The vodka pasta was really tasty, and the gnocchi was good but I'd get something else next time. They also bring you bread to start! Not bad pricing so it's worth a visit!

Sheri S.

Yelp
This is not a kid friendly restaurant. We made a reservation on OpenTable for this restaurant. I called the restaurant to ask if they could put us in a corner not near other tables. We had our infant grandchild with. The person on the phone was very short & rude & told us he couldn't promise anything. His tone was very short & said it's a restaurant, I can't do anything about it. We realized his outside area was closed because of the air quality, but he did not want to accommodate us at all. We will Never eat at this restaurant.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great neighborhood Italian dining experience, look no further than Piazza Bella. This restaurant offers a variety of vegetarian options and they can customize anything to your liking. The capellini was cooked to perfection and coated in a flavorful tomato sauce with just the right amount of spice. Topped with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese, it was a classic and delicious dish that I can't recommend enough. But the real star of the show was the potato gnocchi with creamy cheese sauce. The gnocchi was soft and pillowy, and the sauce was rich and decadent with a perfect balance of flavors. It was truly an unforgettable dish and one that I'll be craving for days to come. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and the service is friendly and attentive. It's the perfect spot for a romantic night out or a cozy dinner with friends. Great neighborhood spot for authentic Italian cuisine!

Yelp
Cozy neighborhood spot, warm, casual, utterly DELISH food! Jose our waiter was busy but gave us plenty of attention to detail the whole meal through. He was really good! I will make this our neighborhood Italian fav!

Yelp
Very good food and great portions. Emilio was a great server!! :) The dessert " tartufo cioccolato" was a yummy ice cream dessert with cherries.

Yelp
UNBELIEVABLE. Why did it take us so long? I'm sad we didn't come earlier. The melanzane with not an oz of oil, the handmade mozzarella is outrageous. The service is outrageous. I cannot wait to come back and tell everyone I know. Love.

Yelp
I've been here twice. Once when we happened to be nearby, and the second for my 7 year anniversary with my partner. It was that good. We live in Avondale, but will be going to this restaurant for the rest of our lives. It is fantastic. The food is delicious , the ambiance is nice, and the staff is always attentive. I had the carbonara the first time and the filet the second time. The filet was one of the best steaks I've had in my life and it was cooked perfectly. Excellent job, piazza Bella.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
They have excellent food, and all of the wait staff is great. We had two small children with us, and they paid so much attention to them- it was so nice. I always look forward to going there.

Yelp
We've been coming to this neighborhood gem for years, and last night's dinner was the best it's ever been! The burrata app was delicious and they clearly make their caesar salad dressing from scratch, it's amazing. We can never choose between their agnolotti or vodka sauce so we always get both. They also make a fantastic espresso martini. Highly recommend a visit here!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love this neighborhood gem! Piazza Bella is located in an adorable spot in Roscoe Village. Inside, it's dark, cozy and has a neighborhood vibe to it. Candles on the tables, a bread basket and olive oil with heaps of Parmesan cheese start your meal. I have dined here with large and small groups and am pleased with the service every time! We love the pasta and the Caesar salad is one of my absolute favorites. They have done a fantastic job during COVID as well with a largely extended front patio, super attentive staff and perfect carryout options. Highly recommend for a cozy night when Italian is what you're craving!
google avatar

Yelp
I will definitely be back! The service and food were stellar, and how extra nice during the holidays and in a pandemic. We ordered the special salad and special pasta and desserts. That pasta was so amazing and I'm happy there are leftovers. Everything was so fresh and wonderful.

Yelp
I had a lovely dinner here on a Saturday night. As a woman dining alone, I always enjoy conversation with other patrons or staff members. I came in just for a glass of wine on a sweltering summer day but stayed for dinner and more wine. The ambience was amazing - romantic and authentic. And the rigatoni - incredible! I can't believe it took me over two years of living in this neighborhood to come here! This is my new favorite spot and I plan to be here often.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
I enjoyed my dinner here with a group of colleagues. The appetizer of the fried eggplant with mozzarella was really good, especially with the tart balsamic vinaigrette. I also got the bucatini with the tangy tomato sauce- it was delicious! They say they make all their pastas in house, and the sauce itself was hearty and delicious.

Yelp
Food: 3 Service: 4 Cleanliness: 4 Got dinner on their cute patio right out front... it wasn't long after we were swarmed by flies. It may sound petty as I shouldn't complain about sitting out on a patio with bugs around, but it ain't fun when you have to constantly be swatting every 5 mins throughout your meal (& wine!) while finding a fly commit suicide directly into your water. Now I've sat out at plenty of patio eateries and it never bothered us this much. Maybe move their potted plants and herbs outside of the fenced seating area or have some fly control implemented? We had a craving for some good Italian pasta so we opted for once in the area which was basically the only option along Roscoe Village strip. Sadly it didn't meet up to our expectations... as it may have been for some other yelpers too. Complimentary Bread: ehh, not great seeing them piled in bins as you walk to the bathroom... Squid Ink $22: My friend who loves squid ink did not like the way it was cooked. Wayyy too overcooked. The noodles were mushy which is never satisfying when it comes to pasta. She preferred the pricier Squid Ink at Eataly. Bucatani $16: Now this wasn't toooo bad, flavor wise. But it did not look appealing at all... as you see the ratio to sauce and noodles were off. Noodles were cooked al dente though! Ravioli $17: My boyfriend said "meh". Good but not memorable. What earned this place another star was the dessert: Panna Cotta and Lava Cake, YES. That's the way to end a meal. Would I come back? Nahh.

Yelp
Clearly Piazza Bella is hit and miss. As an avid Yelper, I have gotten into the habit of checking Yelp reviews when I am on the hunt for a new spot to check out. Me and three friends had lunch at Piazza Bella two weeks ago and our experience was incredibly lackluster. The service was fine and so was the decor. Both of these components my group found to be ordinary for a neighborhood joint. However, what lacked was the incredible tasting and prepared foods that other reviewers have raved about. We ordered five dishes: sauteed calamari, pappardelle, spaghetti & meatballs, agnolotti, and the rigatoni. The calamari itself was very bland and chewy. The sauce was much too lemony, and didn't support or amplify the underseasoned calamari in any way. The pappardalle was very overcooked (mushy). The freshly shaved parmigiano-reggiano shavings were the only redeeming quality of this dish. The pasta water was not salty at all so again, we were served a bland plate of food. The spaghetti and meatballs also did not impress me. Once again, the noodles were mushy. The sauce (the most important part of S&M) tasted very sweet. One of the diner referred to it as Chef Boyardee quality. Was this sauce from a can? I wonder. The agnolotti (which is my favorite pasta) was different than the other pasta dishes as these were UNDERcooked. Still no flavor int he pasta water. Short rib was definitely not fresh, and if it was, the juice was cooked out of it. The rigatoni was the only decent bite of this meal. Sausage was powerful and provided a nice kick to the dish. I loved the mushrooms, however, I felt as if the frozen peas were unnecessary. Pasta also could have been a bit more al dente and more salt was needed in this water as well. I can't help but think that we simply got unlucky with the day and time we visited. With some fine tuning of the techniques used in preparing these dishes, I am sure Piazza Bella could step it up. Please make sure your chefs know that it's okay to heavily salt their pasta water (it should taste like the ocean) and to make sure they are aware of the correct doneness of pasta.

Yelp
This place is amazing. We discovered this place during the pandemic and have been getting it delivered ever since. The filet and pork chop are the best go tos. The calamari is good but not like Club Lucky good. The short rib ravioli is my favorite pasta but anything with sausage is delicious here because they love their fennel. The Caesar salad is pretty basic but fresh enough. I'm not big on sweets but I bet their desserts are to die for. I highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Ronnie S.

Yelp
Great pasta spot, hand made and delish. Plus, if you special request a pasta not on the menu they make it for you if they have the ingredients. This place is better than 3.5 stars! Ambiance is nice too.
google avatar

Alan G.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. The service was helpful and attentive. I had a special soup of roasted tomato and vodka that was delicious. i followed with the pork shop with mushroom ragout, polenta and roasted asparagus. This dish was highlighted on the menu as a chef's special and it definitely deserved it! Finished with a tartufo with a cocoa (as opposed to hard chocolate) perfect. The wines by the glass were fairly priced; I had the the Barbera D'Alba which was delicious!. My son had the gnocchi with a bolognese sauce. While not on the menu you can mix and match sauces with homemade pasta. The place is vegetarian friendly. My wife had an started with a delicious beet salad and followed with eggplant dish. My daughter-in-law. had the capellini pomodoro also delighted. All homemade all delicious, a must visit.

K J.

Yelp
Service was bad and that will ruin a meal even if the food tastes ok. Food was fine but not good enough to make up for our experience. we won't be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was amazing! We have a large book club and wanted a quieter space to be able to talk. This was perfect! The service was incredible and the food was to die for. They make all their pasta in house so it was incredibly fresh. Its tons of food so plan to either split or ask for a to go box. Our server was very knowledgeable about wine and allowed me to taste a few before I found what I wanted for the night. They were so kind and really enjoyed letting us try things. I would totally go back and would love to try their patio when it is warmer.

Yelp
I went here for the first time with my partner on Valentine's Day and it was amazing! We made a last-minute reservation and upon getting there, it was clear that it was the place to be that night! Despite having a reservation, we waited about 15 minutes for a table but most likely because people were taking longer with their dinner since it was a holiday. Once we got seated, we were served pretty quickly. They claim to make all their food in-house and I absolutely believe it. Even the bread and parmesan that they brought out before our food was incredibly fresh! We ordered the burrata as an appetizer which was delicious and my only complaint/suggestion would to add a few more crostinis to make the cheese last longer. For food, my partner wanted to order the potato gnocchi but they had run out of it but was able to get something just as good. I got the spaghetti carbonara which can be hit or miss but this one was absolutely delicious. We also got wine that paired well with our food. The host, servers, and all waitstaff were super prompt despite it clearly being busy. The food is a little for any casual dinner but definitely worth it for special occasions and between the bread, appetizer, and regular meal, I had some food leftover. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and fantastic date night. Would recommend this to anyone!

Yelp
Food was great! Service was not , server was only once at our table. We were the only table so I don't really understand the lack of service. The food tho was amazing would come back because of it! Hopefully they put more attention to service since it is a good place to eat italian food!

Yelp
Great stable resturant. Made reservations and had a wonderful delicious dinner as always. Great service and atmosphere!

Yelp
I had a serious craving for spaghetti and meatballs when I went here with friends. I immediately took a liking to the warmth and decor of the interior. Nice lighting for a date night. There were 4 of us. We each ordered an entree and one sautéed calamari appetizer to share. Our entrees were: Rigatoni, Pappardelle, Ravioli, and Spaghetti. The spaghetti was cooked well but I didn't really care for the sauce. The meatballs were quite tasty though. I really liked the rigatoni. Of the 4 that's the entree I'd order again. The sauce had a nice flavor and I love sausage and mushrooms. Nothing else really stood out to me....a little under seasoned for my taste. Out waiter was very nice and thorough with the service. The prices were good too. Overall: great service, nice atmosphere. I'd recommend the rigatoni.

Yelp
Cozy yet noisy restaurant. Tables are too close together. Nice bar to sit and wait for your table. Very good bartender. Street parking was good.

David C.

Yelp
Awful treatment of myself, son and his friend. We didn't have reservation. Granted. But. No effort was made to seat us in 10, 20, 30 or any amount of minutes. Two tables he could have added a chair for a third. Open tables outside too. "It May rain later. We're not dealing with that". "We have no room for you. You need to leave". Yes. He said "you need to leave". To me and two 13 year olds. Rude dude. Have been here before but only because no other local options. Food is super average. Don't waste your time. Rude manager. And average food. Update. Of course went to Mia Francesca and the place was hoppin'. Jammed. But. A skilled manager welcomed us with open arms and asked for 3 minutes to figure something out. 3. Minutes. Then. Rearranged tables and sat us within 4 minutes. The food? As you all know. Mia is tops. Piazza Bella? Meh. Treatment of customers? Awful. Don't go.

Yelp
Came here late Wednesday afternoon for lunch. We were the only people there so it was a little weird, but the server was attentive. We shared a Caesar salad (nothing special) and then each got a pasta. The pastas were rich, but very tasty and nice sized portions. We also got the lava cake for dessert, but it was just ok.

Yelp
This is an amazing Italian restaurant. My wife and I came across Piazza Bella walking down Roscoe. We soon made reservations and fell in love. We've went for a casual date night, an anniversary, and even brought a had a large dinner party when family was in from out of town. The rigatoni, the lasagna, and the filet mignon are my favorites and the wine list is superb. I highly recommend Piazza Bella!

Yelp
Gave it nearly two years since my last visit and I can still say without a doubt that the food here is not good. However I will say the service is wonderful, which is unfortunate for the FOH staff here. Tonight we had the filet with barolo glaze, asparagus and potatoes, and the potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce. Both dishes were boring boring boring. The filet was overcooked by two temps, waiter recommended med-rare hubby asked for rare it came out medium. The filet wasn't seasoned in the slightest and was bland. The supposed glaze on the steak didn't come through at all. It also had a few big fatty tendons running through it. The asparagus and potatoes that came with it were severely disappointing, just boiled, unseasoned cut up baby red potatoes and chopped up miniscule pieces of asparagus thrown together. I made this concoction at home better last week with some leftover porkchops. $28 The gnocchi wasn't much better--- an overly rich cream sauce with pieces of gnocchi. Nothing to this dish at all. Even a sprinkling of parsley would have went a long way but there was nothing colorful or overwhelming here. $16 I feel like this establishment is ran by people who just woke up one day and thought, "I think I'll open an Italian restaurant today." The food is simply not good and is severely overpriced for the quality. I won't be back- I'd rather take a $15 cab ride to a much better Italian restaurant.

Yelp
The food is decent, but the service is cold and impersonal. Chicken appetizer is dry, but the deep dish is really good.

Yelp
My absolute favorite Italian restaurant in all of chicago. The best lasagna I have ever had.

Yelp
Great quality for 12 years I've been coming. Hope this place is here for decades to come!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolute worst service on earth. Walked into a virtually empty restaurant (3 tables seated) at 8pm on a weeknight, asked for my companion and I to be seated at a 4 top and was told no. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Don't bother going there. Food is fine but service is garbage. Put in a reservation but the "manager" who won't speak to you doesn't honor them and makes the hostess do the dirty work. He also served us last time and forgot to put in our order so we waited for an hour and a half to get our app during this time he was drinking behind the bar. There was nothing but a half hearted apology given. Have tried a dozen times to give this place a chance. So much potential but this guy is the worst.

Yelp
Really good place...relatively new renovation inside and it really is nice in there! This place has been around for about 10 years and I have to say that the food has gotten MUCH better?! Usually it's the other way around.. I like just sitting at the bar and ordering a glass of Wine or Remarkable Sangria and having some dinner right there. The food--they have really good Apps, we ALWAYS get the Goat Cheese..it's hands down one of the best things on the menu! Last few times we had Calamari/Excellent and Sausage and Peppers/Also Excellent!! Always a "Special" of some sort or just stick with the menu items as most of them do not disappoint... Nice Outdoor Patio and the Staff is very attentive--Mallory the Bartender is very nice and good!! PS---Do Not Miss the deserts! Homemade Tiramisu and Flourless Chocolate Cake are SPOT ON!! Hate that term.... GTFJD

Yelp
I really wanted to like this spot more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's cute and the server was really nice, but I thought the food was ok, but not stellar. We had pizza and some wine. It was good, but nothing special and I felt rushed. The food came out really quickly and then I felt like we couldn't sit and talk. It's not that they kept coming by or anything and asking us to go, but it was just the demeanor of the staff. It could be because we didn't order a lot and weren't drinking much, but I just wasn't impressed. Food - 3 Service - 3 Value - 2 Atmosphere - 3

Yelp
Our favorite Italian place in the city. Charming interior. Delicious fresh baked bread, amazing lasagna. Also great wine list. Highly recommend!
