"The crispy, piping hot empanadas at Pikalo are as big as a person’s forearm and bursting with fillings like Buffalo chicken, eggplant parm, and bacon, ham, and cheese. Along with the East Boston outpost, Pikalo also operates shops in Jamaica Plain, Lowell, and two in Lawrence." - Erika Adams, Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"There are so many Dominican empanadas to choose from at Pikalo that placing an order here can be quite challenging. And to make matters even more difficult, they come in two different sizes, and the flavors don’t overlap. How exactly are you supposed to pick between a smaller ropa vieja empanada and a larger barbecue ribs empanada? That’s why we never leave with anything less than a bag of five." - joel ang

"If you’re looking for a quick lunch or dinner takeout spot that includes either a gigantic sandwich or a freshly fried empanada, then this is the place for you. We recommend the ropa vieja and the cheese and guava empanadas. Pikalo also has two other locations in Jamaica Plain and Downtown Crossing." - Joel Ang

Google
I have reordered the cuban and good Lord it is amazing! Fun fact, they actually read and honor your special requests on DoorDash! It is so well appreciated! I also like adding my own spicy mustard.

Google
Best empanadas, sandwiches and services in the world! Gina it’s the best, very kind and friendly.

Google
Beef and cheese empanadas were the best! Also had the chicken one and the egg one. The egg one was okay—not seasoned and kinda bland. But the chicken one was good too. It was $18 for all 3

Google
Incredible empanadas. They are large and freshly fried. Their online ordering system is very easy, but be aware that they don’t usually have everything on the menu and you will be asked if you want to make substitutions when you go to pick up. Each empanada came with a side of chipotle mayo. Underrated flavor was the eggplant parm— so comforting. We would come here again!

Google
Food and service are both good. The empanadas are fresh and crispy with a copious amount of filling. Stop by their locations if you're in East Boston.

Google
DELICIOUS empanadas & Cuban sandwiches. We always get 1 sandwich and 2 chicken corn cheese empanadas to have leftovers later. The empanadas are HUGE. Woman at checkout gave me a bonus empanada when I walked in to pick up my order :)

Google
Best empanadas I've ever had, this is worth a trip out of your way to try them!

Yelp
This place was the best!! OMG I have never seen such huge empanadas and wow were they awesome!! Luckily I had a whole bunch of people so we got about 12 of them. The beef and shredded chicken ones with the sauce were amazing. They were all amazing but the beef one stood out! Who knew we would find such a hidden gem!!

Yelp
Pésimo servicio, pedi una orden por teléfono una limonada de fresa cuando voy a recoger la orden me entregan una limonada regular les digo que eso no es lo que ordene no me la quisieron cambiar, porque según ellos eso fue lo que ordene!

Yelp
Wanted to give this cute neighborhood shop a try. The place and the workers were chill and it was super clean. We were pumped to try the cheese empanada (only non meat option). But after taking my first bite, I was a little surprised to see how empty it was. Although it was delicious and I'd get it again but with different expectations next time.

Yelp
Yummy and huge empanadas. $5 each! Lots of options. The size of the empanadas was super impressive. I tried: beef & cheese, chicken, corn & cheese, and bbq rib. I also had a passion fruit smoothie which was delicious. The young lady staffing the counter was very attentive. For example, she kept my smoothie in the freezer until my freshly made empanadas were done. I got 3 empanadas and a large smoothie for $22. I will be returning!

Yelp
Had the beef empanadas and also the guava n cheese; both were very good and freshly prepared even at 10 pm through Uber Eats

Yelp
This is my second best empenada I have ever had. First best is in New York. Service was quick and friendly. The place was clean and small for seating but we got a seat and ate just fine.

Yelp
Good if you are in a rush and want good food! Great empanadas. I got the Beef & Cheese and it was scrumptious. I got it to-go, but if I hadn't I would have gone right back in to grab more to bring home. The hot sauce was good and perfectly pairs with the empanada. Highly recommend for something to grab quickly

Yelp
This place is a great spot for empanadas! The empanadas are huge and have such great flavor. I highly recommend the spicy sauce as well, it elevated the empanadas to another level. The Cuban sandwich was delicious and had so much meat. Service was a little slow, about a 25 minute wait for two empanadas and a sandwich, but they fried it fresh and made the sandwich fresh so I can't complain. The fresh jugo de cereza (cherry juice) was my favorite thing. The ambiance reminds me almost of a fast food restaurant. I wish they had played Spanish music! Only reason it gets a 4 stars is because of a bit longer of a wait time than I would have liked but overall I'm extremely impressed!

Yelp
Grabbed a cubano and beef + cheese empanada for lunch. Good, fresh food. Sandwich was lunch for 2 days for me as it was pretty big. Empanada was great as well.

Yelp
BEST EMPANADAS EVER. I have never had a food that has made me feel so happy and content with my life. Especially the beef and beef and cheese empanadas. They are HUGE too. And the sauce that it comes with (for free) is the perfect touch to the most perfect meal. HOLY COW SO PERFECT SO AMAZING SO BEAUTIFUL. Everyone should order from here. Best. Restaurant. Ever. 100/10 review, If I could give more stars I would. These empanadas broke the scale.

Yelp
I decided to go in and get a few items to pick on I started with a beef empanada. Taste was excellent it was a little bit on the well-done side on the exterior. Overall a great empanada. I also got two chicken croquettes they're actually sized approximately like a large mozzarella stick taste was great as well as the texture came with a little dipping sauce. The place is very small had no seating it did have one little lunch counter that could have fit 2 to 3 stools possibly nowhere to sit due to Covid I am not sure. The woman behind the counter was very polite hard to understand spoke just broken English but very polite. As always in the Square parking is limited and top so take your time and find a legal spot. The location was attractive to the eye and also clean.

Rachel B.

Yelp
Their empanadas are too good! Clean and great service. I am definitely keeping this hidden gem.

Yelp
Pros: This place has the best, biggest empanadas i ever seen in America. The filing is nicely seasoned as your mom would, unlike some others, and the dough is perfect, not too thick so that you are only eating flour or too thin that it crumbles. We had a completa and an eggplant and both super yummy. Portions are humongous and all came with FF. I also had dulce de leche, arroz con leche, and natilla, each of these was perfection. They must have a cibao grandma cooking in the back, i have never seen REAL dulce de leche being sold anywhere, this was my golden find. Oh and don't forget the quipe, it was crumbly but the flavor was on point. And no matter what you order have a jugoavena along with it, just as we do in the island. Cons: The meat in the sandwiches was shredded both times and mixed with a questionable sauce. My boyfriend really liked it, while for me it was meh and unexpected. If you are Dominican don't order The chimi thinking that's what it is, it isn't. Overall the bread was beautifully toasted and there was something there that made it taste like home, i think it was the mayo. I wish they would sans the weird sauce and just sautee the meat with flavorful things instead and serve that way. I need to come back to get my dulce de leche and a patacón!

Yelp
Really like getting delivery from Pikalo. They're always fast and the food is consistently good. My favorites are the corn chicken cheese, buffalo chicken and the beef with cheese empanadas. I tend to order at least two empanadas at a time given their individual size or an empanada and a pikadito. One is not quite enough.

K D.

Yelp
A great spot to grab a quick empanada and passion fruit drink on the go before heading to the mall, or a long d distance car trip.

Erasmo B.

Yelp
Food was great and all the review it awesome The service is great they treat you right also it was awesome the restaurant it's so cleab

Kimberly R.

Yelp
Has the best empanada and quipe in all of Boston. The best lemonade. The service was great and it reminded me of my hometown.

Robert S.

Yelp
Wow!!! FRESH HOT And Assembled perfectly,There's LOVE in every Bite of this cubano Sandwich

Angelina M.

Yelp
I've ordered Pikalo twice now for delivery and both times the empanadas were solid. The ground beef and ropa vieja are probably my favorite so far. The pollock was way too salty. Corn and cheese, spinach and cheese, and chicken are good but not great. The dough is perfectly fried, not too thin or thick and enough crispiness on the outside. Even for takeout, they kept their warmth and chewiness. The flan is creamy and rich! Definitely don't skip dessert.

Yelp
quick and friendly service! AMAZING taste and great sized empanada. great value for the cost! can't wait to come back

Yelp
Where has Pikalo Empanada been all of my life?! I was around the area for dinner and I happen to see this little shop from the corner of my eyes while driving. I instantly knew that I had to check this place out because I've been on the hunt for some good Dominican food in Boston for quite a while now. I opted for take-out. I ordered online and everything was ready within 15 minutes. The restaurant was small but bright and clean. The employees were extremely nice. Driving and parking around the area is chaotic during the weekends but I think it's so worth it. The patacon completo was the highlight of my night. It was my first time trying and it left me wanting more! You're probably thinking that I'm exaggerating but no seriously, you need to try this at least once in your life. Patacon is almost like a Cuban sandwich but replace the bread with two huge tostones filled with flavorful shredded meat, veggies, and a bomb sauce in the middle. You honestly can't go wrong. I also ordered 1 beef and cheese empanada and 1 corn, chicken, and cheese empanada. Both were amazing, seasoned perfectly, and the size was massive and cheap compared to other places. My final verdict? I'm literally in love with this place! *chef kiss*

Ciarra D.

Yelp
It's okay. The empanadas are good for the most part, but super greasy. They're pricey for what is is. Call to make your order, the online ordering system isn't accurate with what is in stock. I made an order online and half of the things I ordered weren't available.

Anna O.

Yelp
I tried for the first time empanadas today and they were good. I tried Ham & cheese and Bacon, Ham & cheese. I gave 4 stars just because bacon was over cooked or old and dough was to hard to bite.

Tangg T.

Yelp
Empanadas are huge, but just like a bag of chips, half empty. I went to take a bite, no meat, another bite, no meat.. finally I just ripped it in half and it basically became a regular size empanada! If you're gonna charge almost $4 for one empanada, give us double the meat, not just double the flour..

Jessy F.

Yelp
Empanada were amazing! This is coming from a Latina dough was fresh, size where big and flavorful! This is Definitely one of my favorite now. I got chicken with cheese and beef with cheese!

Jaime C.

Yelp
Great place for lunch the empanadas are big and delicious with a variety of choices. Also the sandwiches are spot on the place is very clean and the staff is very helpful. You can't be afraid of carbs though, but hey sometimes you have to just say screw it and live a little. Will go there again.

Leslie W.

Yelp
Huge taste awesome empanadas. I particularly like the Ropa vieja. Sandwiches are great. Can't go wrong with any of the pork dishes! So happy to have them in East Boston

Igor R.

Yelp
Huzzah! Looks they have a new location in Eastie - this place is amazing! Great sandwiches, tons of empanada options (and the best in town!). I loved their JP location, and so glad there's one close to me now. I'll be ordering from there a lot!

Grant W.

Yelp
Amazing food! The empanadas are huge and yum! I recommend the shredded beef with cheese empanada or the shredded chicken with cheese empanada, they are packed with flavor, but you can't go wrong with any of them. However the sandwiches are what makes this place unique. Their version of a club sandwich is like a Cuban sandwich crossed with a triple decker club. The sauce is amazing and I've never had anything like it. I order from here monthly.

kathleen h.

Yelp
Delicious empanadas! Almost took a star off only because there wasn't a lot of filling in some of them and the shredded beef wasn't very good. Chicken corn and cheese was fantastic, ground beef and cheese was great and bbq rib was pretty good just didn't love the flavor of the bbq sauce with the dipping sauce. Definitely will go back and want to try some of the odder flavors (eggplant?). But seriously the chicken and cheese and chicken, corn and cheese were amazing and the dough on all of them was amazing and cooked to perfection.

Adam C.

Yelp
First time trying today and we loved the empanadas. Cod, Lobster, chicken, and shredded beef were all amazing. The dough is delicious and just enough. They are made fresh and this place will definitely be in our rotation for takeout. If you live in East Boston area give this place a shot and you won't be disappointed. Hope it's here to stay

Yelp
