New Bakery Pinkerton’s Opens in Kingston, New York by James Beard Chef | Eater NY

"Debuted in December from James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Angela Pinkerton, an alum of Eleven Madison Park, this bakery occupies a former service station in Kingston, New York. Offerings include a pecan sticky bun, jalapeño monkey bread, English muffin breakfast sandwiches, and — starting next month — lunch service. The pies she was known for at the Bay Area’s Pie Society, which she closed in 2023, will also be available, including a passionfruit meringue with bay leaf custard, plus many other sweets; gluten-free and vegan options are available." - Nadia Chaudhury

New Restaurant and Bar Openings: Hudson Valley and Catskills: Summer 2024 | Eater NY

"Building on the following she amassed for her pies, James Beard Award–winning pastry chef Angela Pinkerton is opening Pinkerton’s in Kingston this summer to expand beyond pies into danishes, cakes, cookies and other nostalgic American desserts with gluten-free and vegan options, plus lunch and breakfast, in a longtime Kingston Art Deco building that formerly housed a gas station, bagel shop and the Cake Box bakery." - Emma Orlow

Google
Kingston officially has the best bakery in the area. The pasties and desserts they are doing are just different. From a lineup of killers, the cheese danish and coconut chocolate croissant standout as ridiculous. On top of this, the people who work there are great/so friendly. They explained all the great products and threw in a couple extras on the house. Picture is what didn’t get inhaled in the car ride home.

Word on the street (OK, social media) is that Pinkerton’s croissants are worth traveling for. I don’t live around the corner and usually when I come by this way they have been closed but I finally made it. And it was totally worth it! I do agree, the croissants are worth going out of your way for. According to the boss, the secret is in the European butter. I’m not a foodie specifically but I do love croissants and these ones are exceptional! I don’t do sugar, so I can’t tell you about all the other goodies but I’ll definitely be back! Everything looked wonderful and the staff was very helpful and friendly.

Update: Before going to the dinnerware museum, I had lunch and enjoyed the chicken pot pie who co was lovely then pumpkin pie for later. I bought a box of cookies to give to the local library staff (they deserve cookies every day for what they do!) Andre famous English muffins for my freezer to enjoy at a late time. ****** I finally made my way to this wonderful bakery. I ordered the bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and it was SO GOOD! No photo as I ate it so quickly! Every aspect of this simple sandwich was of high quality and so delicious. The BEC is on their homemade English muffin with a fluffy scrambled egg and an herb-y cheese. I also ordered an iced London Fog which was exactly what I needed for this hot and humid day. Later, I’ll enjoy one of their almond croissants and a slice of their blueberry crumb pie. The cookies looked delicious and looked forward to sharing them with my neighbor’s kids. Look forward to visiting again!

Artisan pastries in a bright & casual space. You will not regret splurging on their Chicken Pot Pie! The filling is juicy & rich, and the savory biscuit topping takes it to another level. Also got one of their seasonal Strawberry-Rhubarb pies, and it was a crowd favorite at dinner. Worth a special trip.

We can't recommend Pinkerton's Bakery enough! We were visiting Kingston for the weekend and looking for a pie to bring to a friend's gathering. We debated between the Stonefruit Soirée and the Key Lime Pie - we couldn't decide so naturally ordered both. Both were incredible and the fruity flavors did not disappoint. While we were ordering the pies, we decided to sample the Bacon, Egg and Cheese breakfast sandwich and the Chocolate Croissant. These were also absolute hits and not to be missed. (And we don't have photos of these because we devoured them so quickly!) Angela, her husband, and everyone who worked at the Bakery were very friendly and helpful. We love the retro vibes from converted oil station and the sitting area was bright & clean. We are already figuring out when we can return to Kingston for another visit. We're bracing ourselves for the toughest decision of all: another round of Stonefruit Soirée, or try the Passionfruit Meringue? Maybe the move is to skip the debate entirely and order one of everything.

This place seriously rules. Stopped by on our way back to Brooklyn and I wish it was closer to where we live. First off the staff are dope and friendly. They had many samples available and their passion for what they do is contagious. Second, everything we got was amazing. Get the jalapeño monkey bread which had some nice heat to it. You can taste every herb in the bread. Cheesy with the perfect amount of heat. Reminded me of the butter flake rolls from my childhood. Great lamination. Ham and cheese croissant, the flakey crunch of the croissant was amazing and the cheese really punches through and holds up the salty sweet of the ham. Don’t get me started on the Apple and quince cheese danish. The Apple and quince layer was perfectly tart and sweet, texture of the cheese was perfectly smooth and creamy and again the flakey bread was perfectly buttery and crunchy. The coconut chocolate croissant is unique and delicious. It’s a real choose your own adventure of flakey buttery, smooth chocolaty, and fresh toasty coconut. Designed in three stages and can be enjoyed in multiple ways. We also got the passion fruit meringue pie, which they had samples of. I’ll spare you my review and only say buy one. Buy two. If they have three get them all.

Great mix of savory and sweet baked goods. Everything made fresh in-house. Super friendly staff. This place is great! Go now! Recommendation: Get the coconut, chocolate croissant!

Google
We’ve been here twice this week and absolutely loved it! The staff is incredibly friendly, and the food is outstanding. On our first visit, we arrived near closing and grabbed a mud pie—so nostalgic yet elevated. This week, we tried the apple-quince and plum Danish, both perfectly balanced in sweetness. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Wow! What a bakery! So my husband was hungry so we went to this Italian deli in Kingston. He told me to check the reviews on a bakery across the street (which was vegan- no thanks), so Pinkerton's came up next. I went in and found all the reviews about Angela Pinkerton and what an amazing pastry chef she is. Well, they weren't lying! I had THE BEST croissant of my life- I was able to peel back each amazing layer. My husband got a plum and apple hand held pie which was soooooooooo good as well. We are going to Quebec next week to find the best croissant and all we had to do is come to Pinkerton's in Kingston! Their staff is friendly and warm and the place is adorable outside and inside. I told my husband it's a good thing we don't live that close because it would be dangerous. . DEFINITELY come here- it's amazing!

Yelp
My Yelp friend, Jane D. recommended I check out this bakery in Kingston, NY. From the moment I peeked at their menu, I was totally into it. One item, in particular, practically called my name: the passion fruit meringue pie. If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for anything made with real passion fruit pulp. It's not just a flavor I enjoy- it's one I grew up with in my homeland. For me, it's nostalgic and joy all in one bite or drink. When I first visited, I was bummed to learn they were completely out of the passion fruit meringue. Still, I didn't leave empty-handed. I grabbed a few goodies to take home, including an apple+hibiscus pie slice that my husband devoured and something else. Fast forward to my recent second visit: this time, I called ahead to make sure they had their famous passion fruit meringue and they did! I also picked up the veggie quiche slice which although had a nice list of veggies, they seemed to be resting on top only and not mixed throughout. It was also very eggy and maybe just a smidge of cheese. Then I finally got my hands on a mini passion fruit pie. As soon as I sliced it open at home, I caught a whiff and there it was. That distinct, tangy-sweet smell that took me straight back home. The meringue was cloud-like with the right touch of sweetness and perfectly browned on top. Just one bite and I was hooked. That lush, silky passion fruit center was rich, tangy and excellent. Everything I wanted. But something made me pause and started to wonder- was the curd made with gelatin? If you know me, I don't eat pork or any of its by-products. So I called and my heart sank when I was told it contains gelatin. As much as I loved that first bite of the passion fruit meringue pie, I couldn't eat the rest. The pie delivered everything I wanted flavor-wise, but pork/gelatin/lard haven't been part of my dietary lifestyle since my teens. And in their menu, gelatin isn't even listed in the pie description. If they made a gelatin-free version. I'd be the first in line.

Yelp
The much anticipated Pinkerton's (8 Fair St) is now open. Angela Pinkerton, former pastry chef from 11 Madison Park (3 Michelin Star), made her way to Kingston via San Francisco. Taking over the old school gas station space that was Cake Box for over 30 years. We are not talking old school Italian or German bakeries like Diesings. Think Dominque Ansel or whichever hip bakery in Manhattan is doing some laminated croissant riff and pies with strange herbs and fruits. Even uttering the words 11 Madison Park, raises the bar so high, I don't know how they could live up to the expectations. I've been to Pinkerton's twice to try an array of pastries. The owners are super pleasant and easy to talk to. Nate's laid back California vibes and tattoos are a welcoming ice breaker from the stuffy over the top pastry case. I've had the passion fruit meringue ($8), apple pie ($6.50), quince and cheese danish, mud pie with coffee and hazelnuts ($8), croissant, jalapeno monkey bread, and a pecan sticky bun also an array of cookies from chocolate chip($3.50), pecan snowballs, and ginger yuzu snaps. The croissant was perfection. The delicate layers of crunch wrapped around the buttery pillowy insides. The only other croissant to challenge its throne locally would be from the Bartlett House in Ghent. Chocolate chip cookie was thin with lots of crunch. It still had some soft spots in the middle and a healthy dose of salt on top. The Passion fruit meringue was the one I was looking forward to the most. I much prefer the bright zing of the passion fruit to the sourness of a lemon. One bite and im confused. Why does this have the slightest hint of thanksgiving? It was next to the turkey pot pie in the cooler? After asking Nate, I realize I didn't read the fine print and it has a bayleaf cream. Why? The quince danish has herbs on top also. The danish is out of this world with the same crunchy lightness and butteriness of the croissant. The apple, quince, and cheese filling is delightful but bam Thanksgiving once again. The Mud Pie is over the top deep rich chocolate with coffee in the background making it deeper with brownie pieces on top. I'd say a mix bag for me but the flavors might work for you. Rosemary, sage, thyme, basil or any random herbs can stay on the savory side of my meal. To each their own. Overly complicating ingredients to sound trendy or fancy doesn't always work. These profiles didn't work for me but man was that croissant top tier . Above Photography https://www.instagram.com/b.overly_delicious/-- in Kingston.

Yelp
James Beard award winning chef in the Outstanding Pastry Chef category, Angela Pinkerton, moves back to the East Coast to open the eponymously named Pinkerton's in a converted Gulf Oil station. Che figo, Italian for "That's so cool." I hesitated to write this review but after trying a few of her creations, I can emphatically state, she's the real deal! Although I took pictures of some baked goods and desserts, I've only tried two - a plain croissant and a slice of the passionfruit meringue pie. If someone can make pastry that is crunchy, chewy, yet light, airy and delicate at the same time, out of five ingredients, that's accomplishing something. That croissant was something. I know it's such a cliche but the passion fruit meringue pie was the best I've ever had. Seriously. Each layer (graham cracker crust, custard, passion fruit curd, bayleaf meringue) is very good on its own but the combination of crunch, sweet, tart, and slightly exotic/unfamiliar (passion fruit and bay leaf) tastes and textures altogether...redefined what a pie can be for me. I'll admit I'm having a moment here, fanboying on pastry and desserts, of all things. I haven't even tried the chocolate croissant, apple, quince & cheese danish, or the mud pie yet because it would be too much of a good thing. I recommend you try it for yourself. If you have the time/interest, here's a wonderful article: https://hudsonvalleyone.com/2024/11/22/pinkertons-formerly-pie-society-of-berkeley-takes-over-cake-box-in-kingston/

Yelp
I was in the area today and decided to do what I usually do, google bakeries. I bought the cherry almond crostata, which I have just found out is an Italian version of a tart. It's almond past with cherries and I thought it was delicious. I had no idea what a crostata was but it looked good. Well, It looked like a tart but the sign said "crostata". The almond paste was yummy and nothing about the tart was too sweet. It was just right, including the crust. And I'm picky about crusts. The man who waited on me was very personable and friendly. I see from reviews here that this is a new bakery owned by a well known pastry chef. I'm in the area once in a while for hiking and general exploring and would love to return and try other choices on their menu. They also have breakfast and other items along with pastries, pies, and cakes.

Yelp
Delicious fresh baked pastries, cookies and the best Chicken Pot Pie! We had lunch in the cute little cafe area. So many delicious options we had to take some home.

Yelp
I'm so thrilled that they are so close to my house maybe about 3 miles away. The current scones are the best I've ever had in my life. I have shared them now multiple times and everyone just freaks out at how delicious and wonderful they are. I went in on Sunday 4/13/25 to pick up some scones to share and a cake/pie to take to a party. I ended up getting the passionfruit meringue, not only was this the prettiest pie, but it was just spectacularly delicious Everyone I shared it with was just blown away!! . Good job well done so happy to have you in the neighborhood.!

Yelp
Simply the best upstate bakery.. no its not the donuts you grew up with in Mapleton, NJ.. This is a legit 11 Madison park pastry chef who happens to live (and thank the lord cook) upstate.... Everything is beyond.. please don't order the fruit pie by the slice as they may run out before I arrive!

Denizen A.

Yelp
This place is so good, it's both a blessing and a curse. I will be increasing my cardio so I can eat whatever the chef makes. To wit: jalapeño monkey bread, apple turnover, tiramisu, a slice of Boston cream cake, lovely little ricciarelli. Everything was fantastic. I went in not knowing anything abt pedigree (EMP wow)...but good on Kingston for having this level of food here. Can't wait to try the chicken pot pie, the flaky looking croissants and everything else.

Jane F.

Yelp
I saw so many nice pictures of what looked like nice baked goods so since I'm a fan of bakeries I thought I'd stop by. When I got to the counter and was ready to pay for what I ordered the man at the register was so aggressive when I asked a question that I practically ran out of there and decided not to go back ever.
