The Best Restaurants On First Hill - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Not to be confused with the Pike Place spot everyone obsesses over, Piroshki on Madison is a tiny Russian bakery with pastries that come filled with things like potato and cabbage or beef and cheese. The Best Seattle Dogs, Ranked

"It might not be the law to have a hot dog at a Mariners game, but it should at least be an ordinance—and the oversized Ultimate Seattle Dog is the one to get at T-Mobile Park. Some may prefer grill marks on their stadium frank, but we like that these are boiled with all those juices staying intact once you get to your seat. There’s also a nice sweet-to-spicy ratio of saucy onions and jalapeños. Just note that the overly soft bun can fall apart easily—stock up on napkins unless you brought a jersey change for the later innings." - gabe guarente, aimee rizzo

Google
My friend recommended this place and I'm glad he did! Everything was delicious! I went for the beef potato and cheese piroshki. I'll have to come again to try their honey cake. The service was polite and wholesome in addition the shop has a welcoming energy that makes you feel at home.

Don’t often post google reviews but had to post this and say - just wow. Excellent food. No BS. Don’t overlook the soups they are fantastic. And as an added plus, the owner keeps the spot very clean.

Google
My corned beef piroshki was delightful. The pastry portion is so tasty. Will definitely return!

Got a few things to go, my favorite being this slice of tiramisu cake ohhhhh my gosh it’s so good! Definitely want to come back and try more cakes

Google
Delicious piroshki and bean soup. Reminded me my childhood. Planning to return to try their cakes!

Google
I've never had anything from here i didn't absolutely love. It's a struggle to make a choice, because every piroshky, and every cake is so heavenly. Besides wonderful food the service is also wonderful. The interactions are always straightforward, and kind. It's obvious the staff cares deeply about what they do. Could not recommend this place enough!

Google
Bavarian sausage and mushroom/potato is my favorite and usual. Love this place! Apricot pastry and the honey cake is the best sweet treat. The cream is so fluffy and the bits of apricot??? Literally fantastic amazing give me 14 of them

Google
The best meal I've had at an incredibly reasonable price. Places like this are becoming harder to find these days with inflation going up, but Piroshki is somewhere you can go to get a full delicious meal for cheap. The staff was very kind. I will be returning in the future.

Yelp
This is a street-facing, bonafide bakery which is a refreshing change from storefronts - both the off-putting long queues at Pike Place, and the interior of a food court in the Bellevue Crossroads mall. Step inside and the air smells of warm bread baking with the faint sweetness of yeast. The eastern European ladies may be seen chatting it up behind the glass front display counter -- a showcase of their variously-filled delectable piroshky. The salmon shape is delightful but so are the perfect little roses and bows on their other buns. I was well contented with the spinach piroshky -- a beautiful gift-box-style presentation with freshly made, satisfying bite. I would bring any visitor to Seattle here for the famous Piroshky experience. I can't wait to return for some traditional honey cake and poppy seed rolls next. You can tell they are authentically prepared, and reminiscent of a hole-in-the-wall, family-run Deli in an older city like New York--except in "new" Seattle it is ensconced in the insufferable sterility of the rectilinear glass and steel modern abominations that pass for "architecture". Conveniently located to the Swedish hospital complex next door. Bus stop from downtown a block away.

Yelp
Piroshki Cafe and Bakery on Madison Came here hungry after a doctors appointment. Had to fast for some tests, so hit here looking for a great lunch. My first impression was mixed. A stern greeting by the cashier, making sure I purchased an adequate amount to be able to sit down at a table. Secondly, what a great idea to see the bakery items being made fresh. I am Croatian and am accustomed to somewhat brusque service from my fellow Eastern Europeans. Once I gave my order of borscht, a stuffed cabbage lunch special and a three layer cake for dessert, they seemed to be slightly more receptive to me. The borscht was so good. I was so hungry and the notes of beet, dill and sour cream made a lovely soup. Healthy and indulgent at the same time. The stuffed cabbage was the dream of Eastern European food. Tender cabbage, with a balanced filling of meat, rice and spices. A hearty tomato sauce on top. Such a good version of this dish. Now, for the dessert. The three layer cake I almost couldn't finish after all this food. Still, poppy seeds and walnuts provided a sweet and tender cake. As I finished everything, I saw a nod of approval from the staff. They had been converting watching to make sure I enjoyed my food. We love feeding people good food. Seemed like home, would love to come back and feel loved in an off handed way.

Yelp
Soooooooo good! Talk about tasty tasty treats. Staff is so friendly and a very chill place to wait out the rain or just hang out while you eat. They were playing the "Wicked musical" sound track and I knew I was home. Check this place out.

Yelp
The piroshky here is ELITE. This is a small business shop, not to be confused with the larger Piroshky Piroshky chain. I got a beef cheese and mushroom and it was incredible. The bread was warm and toasty, and was a perfect shell for the gooey filling inside. It was all hearty and filling for a quick breakfast. It's perfect for a grab and go snack, and they have a huge case of piroshky options!

Yelp

Yelp
My first experience with trying piroshki was at the famous Piroshky Piroshky at Pike Place. I tried a few different kinds and found them all bland and terrible. Why would anyone choose to eat such a thing, this unflavored empanada pasty sort of depression embodied? Then Yelp directed me to Piroshki on Madison, and I understood why. This is the real deal, with an old Russian (or maybe Ukrainian) woman lovingly baking these from scratch each day. The dough is soft and comforting, but firm and thick enough that it doesn't get soggy. The fillings are seasoned perfectly. My favorites are anything with potato and cheese. Prices feel steep, but they're in line with Seattle prices, and the food is extremely filling. Coffee and espresso are Cafe Vita, and very solid for a mom & pop type of place. Desserts look incredible, but I haven't tried them yet, since I'm always there for breakfast. Please frequent this amazing local business. These types of places are becoming all too rare!

Yelp
Been eating here for years. First time found a strip of aluminum in the filling of the piroshky. Probly stuck to blade as the chef finished cutting then got stirred into filling. Fortunately, i wasnt hungry enough to "inhale" my food and was able to sense it before swallowing. I'm sure it was a complete accident, but the chefs need to revise their process to I sure this doesn't happen again.

Yelp
I'm bummed I don't get to be in this area more often just so I can come to Piroshki on Madison. It's a cute, little shop off Madison in Seattle. There's limited seating & no parking at the facility. You would have to park across the street. They have plenty of flavor options from savory to sweet pastries. I ordered the potato, broccoli & cheese piroshki. My fiancé ordered the smoked salmon & cream cheese (fish shaped) & the rice, chicken & mushroom piroshkis. All three of them were delicious! The well-seasoned & garlicky flavor on the insides plus a soft, warm bread was a perfect combination. The service was quick since their pastries are ready to serve from the case. It'll be on my list of places to stop by when I'm in the area.

Yelp

Yelp
Went there on Valentine's Day to get a couple treats and was treated so poorly by the middle-age woman I guess with the brown hair she was rude as hell we had ordered a whole bunch of stuff decided to get some drink and she's like oh you guys didn't pay for that I'm like OK let me put my stuff down. No worries. We're gonna pay for it. Like just was horrible not a greeting on Valentine's Day. Just a bad vibes and have been around into many other other locations. Avoid this location and honestly after how we were treated, I probably will never come back there or take any of my visiting friends there either you guys lost you a good customer for the simple fact of your rudeness!!!

Yelp
Super tasty and easy to grab for breakfast or lunch on the go! Loved the shaped piroshkies especially -- super cute! The staff is very nice and always reminds you to stamp your freebie card

Yelp
I've been coming here for 10 or so years... I walk over from Swedish First Hill when I'm in the area. Freshly made, the real deal... Flaky, buttery and delicious piroshki. Last time I got the broccoli cheese and potato, and it was a lovely treat for a mid afternoon snack. They also have a freshly made desserts cakes and sweets to satisfy that sweet craving. I've had many and they are all equally fabulously delicious!! Service is always prompt...I am usually in and out quick which I personally love. Best Piroshki in all of Seattle!!!! Give it a chance. You won't regret it! Kids love them too!!!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the salmon piroshki from Piroshky Piroshky in Pike Place. If that's the standard, then I'd have to unfortunately rate the salmon piroshki here a 2/5. They grabbed one off the shelf, tossed it in the microwave, then quickly toasted it in the oven. Maybe I came at a bad time when things weren't fresh, but it was around 1pm. The end product was warm and soft on the outside, but cold on the inside. I was wondering why it was so cold, turns out the center is just a big block of cream cheese that's lightly enveloped in some salmon. Not the greatest ratio of cream cheese to salmon, I just kept getting big bites of cream cheese. The bread surrounding everything also wasn't great. It was soft, airy, and very bland. No crisp toasted exterior or sweetness. For $9, these are also smaller and more expensive then the ones at Piroshky Piroshky. Overall, a dissatisfying experience given the high reviews I see here.

Yelp
It was so hard not to try them all. We tried the beef + cheese, beef + potato + cheese, and beef + mushroom piroshkis. Savory goodness overload Will be trying the corned beef + cabbage and piroshki pizza next time! Expect moderate wait times.

Yelp
Very cozy, fast service, delicious food. Great variety too. Prices could be a touch lower but you could do a lot worse in Seattle. With this around I wouldn't dream of going to any of the crappy chain sandwich places nearby.

Yelp
Piroshki!! They look pretty good here so I decided to try a few myself. The Bavarian sausage one was just like a tasty humungo pig-in-a-blanket lol. The smoked salmon & cream cheese one had a tad too much cream cheese for my liking but I appreciated that there was a lot of salmon packed into the bread. Least favorite from the ones that I tried was the piroshki pizza one because there was way too much chopped pepperoni and the mushrooms seemed like they were from a can based on their slippery texture (not a fan of canned mushrooms). The bread for these piroshki was phenomenal. Thick and fluffy. The egg wash gave them such a pretty shine. This kind of bread would make stellar dinner rolls lol. Overall hit and miss with the piroshki fillings but the amazing bread makes me still recommend trying at least 1-2 piroshki here (perhaps there are some that I haven't tried that are much better).

Jared V.

Yelp
Lovely spot for eastern European sweets, their raspberry pastries are extra good. Highly recommend for higher quality desserts.

Yelp
Their desserts are even better than their Piroshki, which is darn impressive. Had the layered almond raspberry shortbread cake. Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
THE place for pastries! I tried the walnut roulette and the vatrushka. Both were soooooo good! Have tried their piroshkis before and love them too. Great place to pick up some to go for your afternoon coffee fix!

Yelp
Pelmeni and pastries! Your eyes will tell your stomach that it wants to eat more. Savory of sweet, you can get both.

Yelp
I'm all for food that doesn't involve making a mess or inevitably getting my shirt dirty because I eat like a 5-year old so this place was an ideal choice. I was greeted with a friendly smile and cute ambiance on a beautiful sunny day. The options were all intriguing and I really enjoyed my spinach egg and cheese piroshki. Their desserts are unbelievably delicious & I ended up getting the honey cake ... it seems my t shirt was hungry as well and the inevitable mess that I was trying to not have, happened. As a lover of food, it's important to try new things & new places. I'm glad I stoped by. Thanks!

Barbie D.

Yelp
AMAZING ! Authentic piroshki and baked sweets - fresh, delicious, this is a must to go eat at. I ate my weight in cabbage, onion, potato piroshkis and then ate a ricotta sweet roll - I wanted to eat everything there. Just go - u will not regret it
google avatar

Darrion H.

Yelp
Damn Daniel. Back at it again wit the bomb piroshki. They just do things right here. Not saying the other places don't. It's just better here in my opinion. I don't know why I don't come here more often. Their variety of flavors are unmatched. Their bread is always so fluffy and toasted to perfection. The filling ingredients all taste fresh like it was butchered and hand picked at the kings farm before being preped and stuffed into each piroshki. And they have desserts. Amazing desserts that are worth their own review and 5 star rating. Wait what, duh, this is a bakery. And a damn amazing one at that. I'll have to start trying and reviewing random things here because everything I've eaten here makes the other spots taste like their are serving the cheap knock off versions of food. Their desserts too. I vote yes to piroshki on Madison for piroshki president.

Christopher H.

Yelp
This place is so good. The bakers really care about what they do. The pastry and coffee are best in the city, or should be. The dining area is nice and relaxed. What a wonderful place.

L. V.

Yelp
Got the Salmon pastry. Doesn't look or have the same texture as the store in pike place. Still warm and taste pretty good but the one in pike was better.
google avatar

Mae D.

Yelp
Great piroshkis if you wanna skip that long line at the other piroshki place. They make their piroshkis fresh everyday. I love anything with mushrooms, the corned beef and mushroom is my current favorite. The salmon cream cheese one is great too!
google avatar

Demi Z.

Yelp
A literal hole in the wall. But soooooooo amazing. My fave is the pepperoni pizza, it reminds me or Cuban chorizo which is a nice taste of home. The apricot flakey pastry is a must! I also really like the spinach cheese.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
This is so authentic place! Reminded me my childhood food!!!! I was in the area at some medical building near by and decided to stop by. This time they had my favorite salmon & cream cheese! Absolutely delicious!!! I ask if napoleon was fresh and lady assured me it's very fresh and good they bake everything there daily!!! Dang, this cake was like in my childhood so fresh and yummy!!! This location is much better that we used to have on 3rd and also pike market ( they don't have lunch special or cakes) also that one always full of tourists. Last time I went there salmon piroshky had so little filling in it. This place on Madison it's much much better than pike place! I live on 2nd and pine and I am willing to go all the way uphill for this nice food!!! , !!!!

Yelp
The pierogi here really hit the spot, even if it was one of the heavier breakfasts I've ever had (no regrets). About a ten-minute wait after you pay, and then you're handed a big steaming box of pierogi. I got a mix, so potato, potato & mushroom, and meat. Caramelized onions, sour cream, and whatever hot sauce you what to jazz it up. I picked up two piroshki to go, salmon & cream cheese and a corned beef. Reheated or not, they were great snacks/mini-meals later. Little bit of seating inside, and a single table out front. Service was chipper and friendly, and watching the trio of women bang out the food was satisfying.
google avatar

Tarah H.

Yelp
Small Piroshki shop near my hotel. I had to take milk pills to eat these tasty snacks but it was well worth it. The bread is almost like an Asian milk bread, light and fluffy and sweet. The meat and mushrooms was surprisingly flavorful and satisfying. The salmon and cream cheese is a classic and was really good too. The service was excellent and had a neighborhood kind of vibe.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
So delicious -- and a large variety! I enjoy mine with a bit of sour cream. And treat yourself to a poppy seed roll, too.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
Next to most of the clinics on first hill, Piroshki on Madison is a quick bite that is pretty great for the price. There a huge selection of combos (both meat and vegetables) to choose from and they heat it right in front of you. I got two to eat on the walk back from a dentist appointment and it was really surprising how good it was. I would definitely go back try other ones!

Yelp
I'm having trouble starting this review... As I think about the many amazing things I would like to say about "Piroshki on Madison" I find myself wanting to say it all at once. The moment you step foot inside "Piroshki on Madison" is like stepping into a place you felt you've been before. Home. Welcomed by the lovely staff, piroshki's, and the smell of wonderful dough. "Piroshki On Madison" is truly a one of a kind. For the price of $7.99 with 20 different piroshki's to choose from, you will find yourself having difficulty making the decision on which to feed on. The equivalence of choosing an ice cream from an ice cream truck. I have yet to try them all but am determined to. Out of the 20 I have enjoyed 6: Pizza Ham, Eggs & Cheese Spinach, Eggs & Cheese Spinach, Mushrooms & Cheese Smoked Turkey Breast & Cheese Corned Beef, Mushrooms & Cheese The moment your teeth sink into that beautiful soft buttered dough, making it's way into the inside you get this euphoric feel, the feeling of being hugged by 100 comforting grandma's at once. This is what making food with love is. This is quality food. This is Art. As I reach the end of my review to "Piroshki on Madison" I feel like that kid in 4th grade writing a letter to my crush. I highly recommend "Piroshki on Madison" God Bless Ukraine - Kevin

Yelp
Madison has some nice options when it comes to Eastern European snacks! Piroshky on Madison is a great place for Russian piroshky and pirogy. Piroshky I usually get is the spinach mushroom and cheese. Also usually get order of potato and mushroom pirogy which is I gather is similar to polish pierogi. If particularly pecking I'll also get cheese pieogy as well. So good and tastes homemade. All the soups are also very good and I am partial to the lentil veg soup that has lots of dill flavor. Great lunch spot if you are in First Hill
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
Tasty variety of both savory and sweet piroshki. Our group shared a delicious lunch that included piroshki filled with smoked salmon and cream cheese, Bavarian sausage, potato and mushrooms, ham, egg, and cheese, and chicken, cabbage, rice, and mushrooms. To top it off we tried the apple charlotte cake, espresso almond cheese cake, the Napoleon, and a piroshki with sour cherries. Impressive pastry. Quite a filling lunch. We can recommend all of our choices and will return to sample more.

Yelp
Found completely by accident.... this place is SO tiny and this neighborhood is absolutely crammed with grab n go food places - I almost missed it. I am not a fan of traditional breakfast foods, so I was pleased to find there are several breakfast dining choices around Swedish that cater to my palate. So happy that at 830 am I could get "lunch" flavors for breakfast. Piroski, for the initiated are pastry filled with savory fillings. This joint has SO MANY KINDS I literally couldn't decide I made the lady pick for me. Piroski are perfect for people on foot since it's the original "HotPocket" The one she picked for me was crazy good, spinach and eggs and garlic.... I'm safe from the vampires of Seattle. Their other sweet pastries looked really good, but I'm trying to watch my calories so I abstained, but damn, I'm regretting it. Stamp of approval!

Yelp
The old lady that works here is rude. I think she may be racist. Whenever I come in to buy, (take note I'm a regular here) she will look at me from head to toe and frown as if I did something bad to her. I have been keeping this comment to myself, but I got so frustrated with her service when I came in to claim my free piroshki through their punch card. I ordered a cup of split pea soup which is $4.99 and ask her if I can use my punch card for the free piroshky. She wasn't listening and she proceeded to charge me for $12.12. I asked them twice that I will use my punch card for the free piroshky, then the lady in the back asked me "Can you pay now?". I felt force to pay because there was a line behind me so I paid the $12.12, when I can just be paying $4.99 plus tax. It was frustrating and disheartening to be treated like this from someone that you actually like the food they're serving. I don't normally leave bad reviews, but this one really pushed me. I can't even enjoy and savor the food because of how I felt when I was buying them. That old lady is like the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld. There are also instances where I placed an order through phone for two chicken dumplings, but of course she wasn't listening. When we came to grab our order, she only made one and we had to wait for 15 mins for another one. But we were patient and still nice to her, even tip them cause their food is good. I don't think I will ever want to come back to this branch. I'm not sure if that old lady is the owner, but I really hoped she change how she treats her customer, not only she's rude but she's also racist. Very traumatic experience.

Yelp
We enjoyed our piroshkis. He had corned beef and mushroom. I had beef and cheese. It was an enjoyable and different choice for lunch conveniently placed adjacent to Seattle imaging and multiple other medical services.

Steven L.

Yelp
Piroshkis here are made with love and you can tell instantly when talking to the lady behind the counter. I tried to consolidate piroshkis because I was flying out and she said, "What are you doing?" She said, "I'll fight you!" Haha, but in an endearing Russian kind of way. Not too often you find people that take that kind of pride in their work. The dough is tasty, but have it a 4 out of 5 only because it's a little too much dough in my opinion. Great lattes too!
google avatar

Kiana W.

Yelp
I got the salmon and cream cheese piroshki. It was a decent snack for a fair price. The lady selling it could have been nicer but she wasn't specifically rude. Just said nothing to me the entire time I was in the store till I asked her to grab my piroshki. Kinda an uncomfy vibe to her. The store is cozy, cute and clean tho. The desserts look delicious but I didn't get any cause she rung me up and sent me on my way before I could even ask for a second part of my order.
google avatar

Marina P.

Yelp
Fresh, great service, food options. Savory and sweet desserts. Coffee too. Definitely a place to stop by for a bite. Will be back.

elexa p.

Yelp
the piroshki was good but I ordered a bacon, potato and cheese and was given a potato broccoli. Eating it I realized she had given me the wrong one and when I we up to the counter to let her know she just insisted I had ordered the broccoli and potato. I realized she was not going to believe me or switch the ($8 something dollar pastry!!!) out and I guess gave her a defeated "ok." to which she replied "sorry" - for what? her mistake or mine? Even if I had made the mistake, which I don't believe I did, the customer service was attricious. 4 star pastry, 1 star service.

Yelp
This is my first time having piroshky! This is a small shop with limited seating available. We wanted to get Piroshky Piroshky but the one we went to on 5th was temporarily closed and this place was close to our hotel. We had the salmon and cream cheese, and the turkey and cheese. My friend liked both but thought the salmon was better. I agree, I would say the salmon was slightly better! If you've tried the salmon flavored cream cheese it's quite similar, except this is warmer and fresher. It's a lot of cream cheese though! Made me wish it had more salmon bits/chunks. Honestly I'm not sure I'd buy these again but they were nice to try. We did not end up going to Piroshky Piroshky so I can't compare the two.
google avatar

Hiral P.

Yelp
They have some good items, but they are inconsistent. I got the blueberry bc geese came once and it was so creamy and good. Went back a week later and ordered the same thing. I felt like they gave me an old piece instead of a fresh one or something because the lady went to the back, got it and gave it to me. It wasn't as creamy and good the second time.
google avatar

D. H.

Yelp
Popped in here to pick up afternoon "pick me up snacks" for a short product training. They had a large selection to choose from. They offered to heat everything up. I ordered mostly sweet/fruit pastries and didn't have them warmed up. What was not already individually packaged they did for me and labeled them. They didn't have large pastry boxes. I did personally warm up and try one of the meat piroshkis (might've been the adobo) and it was good. Salty but good. I also tried their gluten free (or was it vegan?) chocolate chip cookie, which was also good. Eating area was clean, functional. Great, quick service and the lady that helped me was very friendly.
google avatar

Bazhena K.

Yelp
Could think of a better place to have a lunch! Fresh, warm delicious piroshki and a cup of borsch I want to move to Seattle only to have lunch here every day lol

Zoltan B.

Yelp
I always get good from there, this time i order a slice of cake that I've never tried, the lady who helped went to the owner and asked how much to cut from the cake, the cake was not sliced - very deceiving practice since most of cakes are sliced. They were whispering and the packaged the slice so i cant see it. I got home and for my disappointment was just a tiny slice. I called and the owner said if i go different places it's smaller and more expensive. Everyone should ask to see what size its the portion before since its just the principles. I will never go there because i cant trust them....
google avatar

Jordan L.

Yelp
Not sure why but this location just wasn't as good as the others before. I had a salmon with cream cheese piroshki but I could barely taste the salmon at all. The one in pike place market though is amazing. Maybe I'll give this location another shot, but as of right now, the taste wasn't doing it for me. Great service though!

Yelp
Wow these are really good!! There is a Piroshki x2 by my place that isn't that great. The one downtown is insane with tourists. This place I did on Doordash and they were tasty and well made. Out of the three the potato and cheese was my favorite. I refrigerated the salmon for lunch. I took a bit and I'm weird with salmon and cream cheese I like mine cold. Kind of the same as crab, I grew up around the PNW and caught my own crab so we would clean it, cook it and fridge it for later that day. Always are it cold so hot is odd for me. I'm sure it will be delish for later. The sausage one was good just liked the potato and cheese better. Good place for piroshki,
