"Local chain Pitango, which just added fresh locations at the Wharf and in Old Town, prides itself on serving traditional gelato flavors, such as hazelnut and pistachio, as well as more modern interpretations such as dark chocolate sorbet and green tea. The gelato is made out of organic milk and cream from grass-fed cows on an organic farm in Pennsylvania. Other outposts sit in Penn Quarter, Adams Morgan, Bethesda, Reston, and Fells Point, Maryland." - Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

Google
I ordered a regular size with hazelnut and vanilla. Flavors were all clearly marked with dietary and allergen restrictions. The hazelnut was incredible. The vanilla was just okay. I would come back just for the hazelnut! Very creamy and flavorful.

Hilda Kroll

Google
A large selection of Gelato and sorbet flavors. I had a large cup ($8.75) with stracciatella, walnut and Sicilian pistachio. Absolutely delicious and refreshing.

Google
This is a good ice cream place if you’re in the Penn Quarter area. We were served immediately. I got 3 scoops. The guy put a lot of mine so I was pleased. I got strawberries and cream, mango, and chocolate fondente. They do have seating inside but it is limited especially during a hot day. Price was slightly expensive. The chocolate fondente was rich and flavorful. Strawberries and cream was lighter and very enjoyable. The mango sorbet was creamy and refreshing. Highly recommend making a stop if you’re in the area.

Google
Exquisite Gelato-- both flavor and texture, super friendly staff, and lively atmosphere! We got passion fruit, mojito, strawberry rhubarb, matcha, and pistachio. Totally would come again!

Emily Liu

Google
Decent tasting gelato, especially the blood orange and hazelnut flavors. Would not recommend the matcha flavor. Really really overpriced; would not recommend. They are pretty skimpy on the portion size too for the large size. Nothing super special about the service or atmosphere either.

Google
Brent and the staff here handled my group of 40 with speed! Great gelato with a variety of flavors . We will be back!

Want creamy gelato in classic flavors, accompanied by fast, friendly service? Go here! Pitango is my go-to “gelateria” in the Washington area. I stop in almost every time I come home to visit my family (though not always at this specific location). Don’t know where to start? I recommend “bacio” (chocolate and hazelnut) and “crema” (cream) for a nice classic combo. It’s much like what I remember eating while living in Italy! 😉

Google
Had the mojito. Very disappointed….I didn’t get a larger serving. It was so good and now I want to try other flavors. Edit: I went back and got a ‘larger’ serving. You know how at most ice cream places they pile it on until you think wow that’s a lot of ice cream!? He barely filled up the cup. There was empty space in the bottom even. It was $9.63 with tax and at least you can save the tip because he was rude on top of it. The flavors are 5 star, but I feel ripped off and will go somewhere else.

Yelp
Great amount of options. We got the raspberry and coconut. the coconut was very good. The espresso machine was down at the time but they notified customers the second they walked in to remove any confusion. Ambiance is nice small and cozy.

Peggy L.

Yelp
Not too bad but I wouldn't order affogato here... just gelato or sorbet itself would be simply satisfying! Service was amazing as he was very generous with sampling so I was able to decide on which flavors as I was indecisive! It was very chill as I was deciding on which and it was not as busy as I thought during middle of the day. Not complaining though.

Sally L.

Yelp
We stopped by for a little treat while we were around the area. I ordered the tumeric and ginger, pistachio, and tamarind. I really like the tumeric and ginger because you can taste the ginger in it. The pistachio was very creamy. The tamarind was a little different. It was a sorbet with a tart and sour taste. Service was quick because they didn't have a long line. The shop was tiny so it doesn't fit that many people in the shop. They also sell coffee but I didn't get a chance to try any of them.

Steven T.

Yelp
Gelato at @ in Washington DC. Wanted a sweet treat after dinner and walked past this busy gelato shop. The gelato here was a bit thick, but also had a nice creamy texture to it. Flavors were great as well and not too sweet. Nice spot for some gelato in the city! Dessert: Pistachio and Hazel Gelato

Marli M.

Yelp
Exactly as expected and that was tasty fresh gelato! The place was busy on a Thursday night. Seating is extremely limited. My husband and I easily split a large and had two flavors in it. Good portions for the price! The staff was efficient with a good size line moving quickly. We grabbed our gelato and headed to the mall for a night time stroll, perfection!

Lydia K.

Yelp
I was walking through the city and came across Pitango. After seeing it had good reviews I went in to try. Got samples of the pistachio and stracciatella and decided to get a small pistachio. The person who helped me was so fun and was helpful. Delicious gelato!

Alice L.

Yelp
Pistachio & vanilla chocolate chip. Not much depth or intensity to the flavor & not as creamy.

Kerri C.

Yelp
Mom and I were wandering the city looking for a sweet treat and came across Pitango. I've been meaning to try it, and just haven't yet. I'm so glad I finally did! I ordered a small, which comes with two scoops. It was really hard to decide which flavors, but I ended up choosing the dark chocolate, and the cinnamon. Both are amazing. The dark chocolate will cut any chocolate craving and the cinnamon was just so delicious- not overwhelming at all. I really enjoyed both. It was also nice that they let you sample (my cinnamon sample influenced my decision). Please note that it's insanely expensive. For two smalls, it cost over $17 without tip. I understand the quality of the ingredients is high, but damn. That's a bit much.

Gabi Y.

Yelp
Went here after fireworks for the 4th of July and it was packed!!! Line out the door. Cute, small ice cream shop with very cool Italian flavors. Ice cream was delicious and workers were friendly.

SY C.

Yelp
TL;DR: on the pricey side but the flavors are oh so good! Stopped by after an afternoon at the National Mall, this was a perfect post-museum pick me up! I got the mojito sorbet (lime and fresh mint) and black tea gelato (milk tea) in a regular size and my friend got the coconut gelato and mango sorbet. All the flavors were excellent! Service was friendly and they were very happy to let us try a bunch of samples before we ordered. They have very few bar seats in the shop but we sat outside on the bench in the sun and it was absolutely perfect. Flavor review Mojito: deliciously refreshing with a wonderful fresh lime juice flavor and it even managed to retain that deliciousness that fresh mint has. Awesome on a warm day Black tea: this was like a milk tea flavor and had a really good amount of tea flavor in it without getting too milky. The ice cream also had that great sticky melt in your mouth texture that good gelato has so I was very happy Coconut: so good! Tasted exactly like delicious Thai coconuts and also wasn't too cloying Mango: this was excellent - possibly one of the best mango sorbets I've tried. It tasted exactly like frozen mango and had that fabulous fragrance that mango has They have a lot of flavors so it was hard to pick but I'm intrigued by the saffron pistachio which sounds like something I'd get next time.

Ziyan C.

Yelp
Ok gelato spot. Busy but not a long wait around 2pm on a Sunday. Total $18.05 for 2 of their smallest scoops. * Pistachio - 3 stars Flavor not very authentic, and this was pretty melty and stretchy. * Pineapple - 3.5 stars More icy than the pistachio, not as stretchy, but slightly more authentic flavor.

Naomi J.

Yelp
Wow, staff at this location really go above-and-beyond to help you find the right flavor! I tried several gelato options (they have just as many sorbet choices) and got one scoop of the hazelnut. Next time I might split the smallest size because it was a lot for me!

Samina M.

Yelp
I always find myself at Pitango whenever I'm in Penn Quarter! Whether it be an after-meal treat or post Smithsonian museum adventure, Pitango offers a high-quality gelato with a variety of flavors to choose from. My go-to order is a Chocolate Hazelnut Affogato - a creamy, decadent blend that resembles the notes of a Ferrero Rocher. My sister enjoyed the Coconut and Matcha mix - very smooth with natural flavors all around. The ambiance of the shop is clean, bright, and lively. There is limited seating and the store is a bit small, so be prepared to enjoy your gelato on the side of shop or on the windowsill. The staff is speedy and always provides numerous flavor samples throughout your visit. I appreciate their kindness on the various busy times I've visited! While it is a bit on the pricey side ranging from $5-$7 each, Pitango is a delicious gelato experience! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Have been to Pitango a million times since living in DC and it never misses. The gelatos are so decadent and they have some fun flavors. I love cardamon whenever they have it and their crema and vanilla pair well with everything. You get 2 flavors in a regular cup which is great. I'd recommend getting a sorbet/gelato split. Don't sleep on the sorbet!! The mojito sorbet might just be their best flavor. Honorable mention for hibiscus when it's in stock. You truly can't go wrong with anything you choose. It's a small space and can get kind of crowded but you can usually find a seat inside or on one of the benches outside. You'll eat whatever you get in 30 seconds it's so good so seats become available quickly! They also stay open super late, until midnight, so if you're in the area after a movie or concert this is a great stop on the way home.

Nette T.

Yelp
I came here after going to The National Portrait Gallery (which is amazing). I love gelato, I don't eat ice cream but if there's a chance to eat gelato, I'll take it! They had so many flavors and I tried a few but I am a creature of habit and ended up with Nocciola (hazelnut). The servers were super patient with my friend as she had decision paralysis haha. My hazelnut gelato was smooth, creamy and oh so good. If you need a pick me up after the National Portrait Gallery, stop by Pitango Gelato :)

Laura P.

Yelp
Stopped in for a post baseball game treat. I appreciate that this ice cream shop is open later than others. Lots of flavors that are not run-of-the-mill and more than one non-dairy options it's not just mango sorbet! It's a little expensive but I think that gelato is a little bit more dense and flavorful so I think it's worth it. The barista was friendly and patient. We enjoyed orange dark chocolate, hibiscus, pistachio, chocolate hazelnut, and cardamom. The orange dark chocolate was quite intense and it's always a surprise that it's not dairy. My favorite was the pistachio. The cardamom was very subdued in flavor. My dining partner liked the chocolate hazelnut best. Beside at chairs that faced the outside and watched people walking home from the game. Nice and quiet, and we got a cup of water to wash it all down

Erica F.

Yelp
This is a very popular gelato spot. There were a lot of people hang in the store when I got here. There were a few seating with modern decorations. I got a small cup with bacio and espresso flavor. The bacio flavor is very tasty. The chocolate flavor is rich and not overly sweet. The espresso has a little bit of bitterness. It was a good combination. Took 2 stars away because the service was not as great. It would be nice if they were smiling and not being short.

Tanim I.

Yelp
They serve outstanding vegan and gluten free gelatos. I am a huge fan of their dark orange chocolate sorbet gelato. Very few places serve this, my favorite ice cream or gelato flavor.

Jazlyn G.

Yelp
YES YES YES absolute best gelato I've had in the last few years. I sampled a few items and was very frustrated at how good they all were knowing it would be hard to choose. Luckily, there is a 2 flavor option. I went with the espresso sorbet and Nutella gelato at the recommendation of staff whom were so helpful and lovely. I will definitely be back. It doesn't hurt that this place is perfectly situated by some of the best restaurants in the city. Love it.

Quin B.

Yelp
I thought I would try a gelato spot while in D.C. I love some sweet and creamy gelato. This is a walk in shop with not much room on the inside. Customer service was great, pleasant, and helpful with picking out a flavor. Despite the friendly service with a smile, this gelato was really bad. It tasted dairy free and I kept picking up hints of coconut milk flavor or maybe it was just my imagination. None of the flavors tasted right. My sister ordered sorbet and didn't even finish hers. You couldn't give me a free cup of this gelato. I wouldn't eat it.

Priscila A.

Yelp
Stopped by hoping to get a good pistachio gelato but ended up disappointed. This is not a real gelato! The texture was weird on both flavors I had. Completely different from a real gelato. The flavors were also not memorable. Tbh, I'd be happier having a Haagen Dazs instead of this ice cream.

Tammy C.

Yelp
Literally stop by for a refreshing dessert! Pitango gelato does it again. I usually come to pitango in the summers when I come to dc. My favooorrriiiteee flavor is the mojito - it's such a refreshing flavor and tastes like a mojito (without the alcohol obv). They have a good variety of flavors and you can sample them! The price is probably the only thing I dislike bc it's honestly a bit pricey. I got the small size (which you get 2 flavors with) and it was around $7.50 Inside, there is a bit of seating but it's a small shop overall. Service is fine and the ambience is casual!

Stacey C.

Yelp
Enjoyable treat just off of the national mall, away from the hustle and bustle of the musuems and still such a close by location for a sweet treat! Extremely kind and patient staff. They talk you through the options of flavors available ---- some made without dairy. Delicious flavors overall! Matcha, golden kiwi, pineapple, all outstanding. Plus standards like raspberry and dark chocolate. The portions are generous. Their coffee set up was next level. I will have to try the sipping chocolate next time I am there!

Jesy T.

Yelp
Stopped in after dinner for a quick sweet fix. This place is a cute little shop, but boy does it get busy! So many flavors to pick from and a variety of gelato and sorbets, with some vegan options too! I got the pineapple sorbet and the hibiscus blossom sorbet. Both of these were so refreshing the pineapple sorbet was vegan friendly and on the sweet side. The hibiscus blossom sorbet, funny enough wasn't vegan friendly, and was sweet, but a bit citrusy/sour also. Loved these both, I got the regular size which allows for up to 2 flavors for $7.50, the large allowed 3 flavors and was $8.50. Despite this place being busy, the single worker there today was fast and efficient and kept the line moving!

Kathryn M.

Yelp
We came across this little gem one evening in search for something sweet. It's a small little cafe that smelled a little like heaven when we entered. They had a wonderful menu of gelato with very unique flavors. Hubby opted for their gelato: turmeric ginger, mojito, and chocolate hazelnut. He loved it! I wish I wanted something cold but I needed something hot to warm me up. After asking the guy behind the counter what exactly sipping chocolate was and given a sample I chose this. Omg. Heaven in a cup.

Marissa D.

Yelp
SO FUCKING GOOD - I got the pistachio and tasted just like the gelato in Italy - Andy got the dark chocolate and it was bitter so it really tasted like natural chocolate which is personally not my favorite - the banana was also very good if you like banana

Jahaan T.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick treat back in July and the service was quick and efficient! I was able to try any flavor I wanted before making a final decision. It smells sooo good on the inside, as they also have a bakery! Looking for a quick cool down, this is your spot.

James N.

Yelp
I love gelato and sorbet, especially flavors that you can't typically buy at the grocery store. While a bit expensive, I really enjoyed my Pitango Gelato. The two guys working were a little eccentric but friendly and allowed me to taste as many flavors as I wanted. The Turmeric Ginger was so different but delicious, the tamarind was also great and not a flavor you see every day, and even the mango which is a typical flavor tasted way better than any mango sorbet that you can buy at the grocery store. Nice little coffee shop feeling place, friendly service, and a fantastic variety of different flavors.

Minelie A.

Yelp
The ice cream was ok. The card reader didn't work and I got melted ice cream...over priced! We didnt like the way that we got ice cream...it was super messy and its started melting so fast while we were waiting for them to manually input in the system...

Carolann S.

Yelp
I forgot to get the gentleman's name that served us but he was very kind and passionate about the ice cream. He took time to tell us about each flavor and suggest his favorites. The ice cream itself was very very good. It was creamy and flavorful. Would definitely recommend!

Hazel P.

Yelp
much needed on a warm day--worker recommended the mojito sorbet and I mixed it with a creamy gelato. Perfect combo!

Odalis R.

Yelp
Wow this was a fantastic treat we stumbled upon walking about town after dinner. I've never been a gelato fan but this has changed my mind. I ordered a half scoop of pistachio and half almond. They were both so creamy and delicious but the almond was my favorite.

Salma C.

Yelp
Rich, creamy, and decadent gelato. I've been wanting to try Pitango for years. It was busy when I went with a long queue in a tiny shop, but it was worth the wait. High quality ingredients were used to create such amazing flavors. I got Bacio and Sicilian Pistachio. Of the two, Sicilian Pistachio was my favorite. I tried samples of their Sicilian Almond and Pineapple Sorbet- all very good. I definitely will come back again to try more flavors!

Megan H.

Yelp
We have stopped here twice in two days. It's well lit and fast paced. We love that it's open later and the door is always open. Our first time in the workers seemed grudging to help but the second time they were so helpful and genuinely seemed excited to see each customer. We are big gelato fans and this hits the spot. Very creamy bases with authentic flavors. Definitely recommend!

John K.

Yelp
Up front, the coffee is good, gelato is good, and the folks at the counter are very nice. Pastries and things are fine, about what you'd get at Whole Foods or Harris Teeter. My big problem is the pricing and transparency in ordering. A nearly 30% upcharge for certain types of milk that isn't reflected anywhere on the menu or disclosed when you order. So for $8, your 10oz coffee had better be a -lot- better than 'good.' There are two other coffee places just on this block, they're much more apt to get my business in the future.

Julie S.

Yelp
Good gelato! The store we went to was very small but clean. The brownie sundae is not worth it for the tiny hard brownie at the bottom but it comes with tons of gelato and is worth the price that way. Solid service, would recommend for a quick treat.

Paige K.

Yelp
Very tasty! I love that they try to use local ingredients and some flavors are organic. They also have a lot of non dairy options which I appreciated. I tried the rhubarb and it was alright but I felt I would like another flavor better so I ended up going with lemon sorbet and pistachio. Both were super tasty! Especially the pistachio! Won't lie, I liked it more than the one I had in Italy. Very good, would def come back! Only downside is it's a little pricey but I'll pay for more wholesome ingredients.

Sherene A.

Yelp
I love spots in DC that Tay open late. They make the city feel a tiny bit more magical on those nights you aren't quite ready to bring to a close. Came here with some friends after dinner from Yara rooftop. Solid gelato. I got a mix of the milk chocolate one that tastes like a Ferrero rocher candy. And the coconut. I'd pass on the coconut My friend got the idea cookieesque one and the pistachio and liked them both. The staff is really sweet and quite professional Seating inside is quite limited so I felt no shame in making a guy who used a seat for his bag, to scooch. Definitely recommend!

Amber D.

Yelp
Craving something sweet after a nice dinner, my friends and I decided to stop by here. I like that you can sample the gelato before you buy it. I had the vanilla chocolate chip. So good! The ladies working there were nice. This is much more of a to go place as there aren't really any seats inside.

Heather B.

Yelp
We enjoyed this treat on a cold December day. It was tasty we opted for the large with three flavors for $8.50. It was perfect for my family. We got pineapple sorbet, chocolate hazelnut and a dark chocolate flavor. All three flavors had very distinct flavor profiles. They were great. Pricing for a medium was $7.50. Service was wonderful as well. Overall, we enjoyed it

Vicki L.

Yelp
The cappuccino was good. The pastries were good. But what made us come back was the hospitality of the barista. He greeted every customers and had small talks. He treated people like family. In the beginning of our DC trip we tried not to go to the same stores, restaurants, cafes so we could experience more. But when we were in another coffee shop this morning, the staff in that shop was cold. We decided to go back to Pitango. When he saw us, he remembered us and continued our conversation yesterday. You can get good coffee and good pastries at other places but you don't get this kind of warmth anywhere else.

Annie S.

Yelp
WE LOVE PITANGO! Honestly this is the best dessert place in the area if you like gelato. You will pay $8, but it is so worth it. You can get two flavors, the staff is super friendly and can help make recommendations and you will love it. Some of my favorites are the banana, cardamom, cinnamon and many more!

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
The good - free tasting, good gelato, all made on premise, interesting flavors & service. The bad - pricey. The ugly - nothing.

Scott S.

Yelp
The gelato here is... well, it's good. Not "make-you-swoon" good, but more like "yeah, I guess I'll finish this" good. The service, though--oh boy! I felt like I was bothering the employee's soul with my mere presence. I'd ask a question, and getting an answer was like pulling teeth, except less pleasant. And when it came time to serve the gelato, he lobbed each cup onto the counter like he was shooting for three points. Bonus: every cup came with a side order of 'gelato splatter art'! At least the gelato wasn't bad, though, so there's that. Sure, the prices are a bit high, but hey, this is DC--we pay extra for the charm. And the portions? Let's just say I've had more satisfying scoops from a spoonful of regret.

Scarlett D.

Yelp
I can't speak on their coffee or their gelato. But their baked goods are phenomenal. I work across the street and from time to time get a croissant or cookie or even a muffin. Everything is so tasteful. I spent most of my summers in France with family. And I haven't found a croissant as buttery and flakey as the ones over there until I came to Pitango. The cashier is alway nice and respectful. Always asking if I'd like to warm up my pastries. My favorites have to be the croissant, spinach and feta and the pain au chocolat. One day I will have to try their gelato!

Zahin H.

Yelp
It's pretty much impossible for frozen milk, cream, and sugar to taste bad when you're craving something cool and sweet. However, the gelato had a strange stretchy almost taffy-like texture. It's sort of pricey as well, with the small (in the picture) being almost $8 (the large is only a dollar more though and appears to give you much more bang for your buck).

James W.

Yelp
An easily accessible gelato shop in Penn Quarter that offers so many great non-dairy, vegan sorbets. The flavors are all delicious and the staff are incredibly friendly. It can be very crowded in the evenings and weekends, but the line moves relatively fast. Their flavors are displayed on the wall to the left when one enters and they change all the time. Out of the sorbets, the Mojito and Golden Kiwi are my favorite, but like other gelato shops, there are no wrong options. They also have a nice area to sit inside or on these windowsill benches, which are a great addition!
