The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants - Eater

"The burgers are juicy, the chicken is crispy, and the pork is tender at this sandwich-focused food truck, which roves around Aspinwall, the Strip District, and Downtown. You can’t go wrong on the menu, but look for favorites like the Nashville-style PGH hot chicken sandwich and “In-N-Aht” double smash burgers. Follow the truck on social media to see where it’ll park next, or find the brick-and-mortar location inside Strange Roots Millvale Taproom." - Briana L White

What began as a food truck now anchors a brewery kitchen, slinging the In‑N‑Aht double with local twists. Celebrated by Pittsburgh Magazine and City Paper, it nails the nostalgic smash‑burger profile without feeling copycat.

Google
Great spot for delicious sandwiches inside strange roots brewery. Order online, pick up, and take a seat outside in the beer garden. Grab some unique beers while you're at it.

Google
This food truck was at my work. I got the double burger and it was delicious. Nice buttery bin, juicy burgers and the sauce was so good. Also loved the fries!

Jake Kraus

Google
This was a unique experience but one I would do again. It's very much like a typical food truck at a brewery down to ordering on the app but it's right there all the time so you don't have to hunt it down. I had a chicken sandwich and fries and it was fantastic! The food came out quick, was nice and hot, the chicken was delicious and the shoestring fries crispy and perfectly salty! Looking forward to my next visit!

Google
Burger was fantastic....fries were on point as well. A little clunky figuring out how to order, business is located inside another business, but after that all good

Google
My first reaction is these are the best loaded fries that I've ever eaten. The aioli sauce added extra tastiness! The grilled chicken club was surprisingly good. I liked the crunch of the bacon for texture and it tasted good altogether. Only negative is having to wait (extra 15 min) longer than expected for the food, but what did I expect ordering food on a Friday night when it's probably super busy. However, the wait was worth it because I totally plan to go back again to try the other sandwich/burgers!

Absolutely amazing. Definitely worth a stop. Wide variety of sandwiches, and they all taste incredible. Our favorite was the “In-N-Aht” Burger🤤. Check out our full review on YouTube: @TheGrubGuys. Follow us on IG: @realgrubguys.

Google
I wish I could rate this place, but unfortunately, with no food actually delivered, it is literally impossible to rate. We ordered fish sandwiches at 5:45 on a Friday afternoon. I can understand that it might take a while being a prime time, however, 2 hours of a wait time is entirely unacceptable.

Was cruising out of town on Saturday to go to the Asian grocery store north of town when we stopped at a light and saw this place. We were planning on getting a bite at some point so we said why not and went in. Ended up being very pleased with most everything. The drinks were great. If they still have the cherry vanilla tartburst (I think that's what they called it) I'd highly recommend that one. The menu is somewhat limited, but that's how you know a place is serious these days it seems. Very solid offering. Good chance I'll be back to try the hot chicken and maybe some smothered fries. Who knew high society could be so delicious?

Yelp
Been wanting to hit this spot for over a year now and finally got to it today. Pleased I finally did. It's not going to blow you away to the moon, but it won't leave you disappointed at all. It is sooooo fucking spot on. I will defo be going back The flavor on that fried chicken sammy was solid. Not the level of spicy to where it's unbearable, you loose flavor and just get heat. You had great flavor throughout. There was more breading to chicken than I would've liked but it wasn't to the point to where I wouldn't get it again because again the flavor was so fucking good The cheesesteak was solid too but not my favorite I've had. The bread was nice and soft with a solid size but could use a little bit more filling. Doesn't take for the fact the filling was all solid. Good amount of cheese, tasty beef, peppers were good and not too salty Tons of outdoor seating available and a little bit in the inside. Inside is a dimly lit hipster bar vibe going on and you can bring your food from the truck in there. In the summer this place is def a move if you haven't gone before. TONNNSSS of seating so I know it gets packed Ordering wise you just scan a QR code, order online then grab from the pickup station. I imagine when it's nicer you just go to the truck

Yelp
Pittsburgh Sandwich Society, located within Strange Roots' taproom, offers a weekly rotating menu of burgers, chicken, fries, and hot dogs (I wrote "dogs" at first but then realized in 2024 we apparently have to specify). I ordered a hot dog that had crunchies and relish on it, and it was quite good. My friends also tried their burgers and fries and had positive things to say. It didn't take long for our orders to be ready and pick up was easy.

Yelp
Stayed at an Airbnb and heard there was a brewery right down the road , so we went to check it and out found out that there's a sandwich store right there. So had to try it. We got the chicken sandwich and the hot chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was nice and big. The hot chicken was spicyyyyyy but the flavor had a lot of chilli in it. So if you can't handle the heat or don't like a chili taste that's overpowering then don't get it. The fries were ok nothing fancy. But it's a good spot for a quick bite. Definitely worth the shot. P.S. you gotta order on the app as there is no one to take the order. The beer place has ppl to take orders but that's just for beer. It's a nice vibe to sit outside with all the lights. You can bring you pupper too and have a few drinks and grab a bite

Yelp
A COOL SUMMER SPOT Pittsburgh Sandwich Society was a cool place with good food and drinks, but definitely a little different than I had expected. We tried out this little gem located in Millvale and were glad we did. It is actually a combination micro brewery and food truck turned into a cool hang out spot with live music and good vibes. Unfortunately the night we visited was one of those weird Pittsburgh spring nights that felt more like winter so we couldn't enjoy sitting outside in their nice outdoor seating area - will definitely have to come back this summer to check that out! A couple things you should know before visiting- food is a food truck style and you will not be served in a sit down style experience. This was totally cool with us but it was a little busy and we were a little confused at first waiting for a waiter to come to our table. You order food through their app and order any drinks you want at the bar. Once the food is ready you pick it up at the pickup location inside the restaurant but it a totally contactless experience. Stranger Roots is the microbrewery serving their seasonal offerings. We tried a few different beers and sours and enjoyed our choices. My husband and I split the in & Aht burger which we LOVED, and the Pittsburgh hot chicken. Honestly we had wished we got two burgers even though others raved about the chicken. Maybe the sandwich we got just wasn't done as well as normal but for two spicy lovers we thought the breading was overly spicy and over cooked (you can tell from my picture it's honestly almost burned). If it had been toned back just a little we both would have really enjoyed. BUT, like I said, the burger more than made up for it - honestly one of the best burgers I've had around town. We got the kids chicken tenders and French fries and both were good but nothing out of the ordinary offerings. This space is very kid friendly and we were happy to see other families with little kids there. They have board games inside, and big yard games outside - another reason we really look forward to returning this summer. We spent about $85 total for food and drinks for two adults and two toddlers when all was said and done which I thought was a little on the pricey side for not being served at all, but we were happy with our visit and will definitely be back. They also have live music on Friday evenings which we really enjoyed as did our kids! Add this place to your list and Check out Pittsburgh Sandwich Society soon as it's sure to be a happening spot around town this summer!

Yelp
Finally got to try this place! Was in my list since I moved to Pittsburgh because I heard it was a great place to have sticky chicken sandwich. The bun had a great taste, the chicken was actually spicy. The chicken itself was huge that it could honestly make 2 sandwiches out of it. I went on a day that was cold and rainy so we sat inside. It's a small area inside. Would come back to enjoy the outdoor patio part since it's more spacious. Recommend! I'll be back!

Yelp
We finally made it to Strange Roots/Pittsburgh Sandwich Society! The burger was amazing. I e had plenty In-N-Out burgers and this was 1,000 times better. Personally I would prefer shredded iceberg lettuce, but amazing nonetheless! We loved the shoestring fries as well, they were expertly seasoned.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for a while. It wasn't perfect, but I went during the Millvale Festival and it was extra crowded, so I'm willing to give a pass for the food taking a while and my chicken sandwich being a bit on the dry side. The chicken was still bursting with flavor, and the toppings enhanced the taste even further. I was intrigued by some of the other menu items and look forward to going back on a more "regular" day.

Yelp
I had high hopes of finding something reminiscent of In-N-Out, but what I received was a culinary disaster wrapped in foil. The burger arrived drowning in grease and so heavy-handed with salt it could've brined a ham. The choice to top it with a handful of limp spring mix -- rather than crisp, fresh lettuce -- was a clear sign the chef's understanding of In-N-Out is limited to distant hearsay. The fries? Overcooked to the point of becoming fossilized shoelaces, with a lingering aftertaste that suggested the fryer oil predates the invention of the wheel. The ability to overcook them so far and still serve them cold deserves some form of award. And the tomato slice -- 3/4" thick and impenetrable -- could have doubled as a hockey puck. They also chose to serve the stem end which is both bold and bewildering. In short, if In-N-Out is a well-tuned symphony, this was a garage band playing out of tune... in a garage that's on fire.

Yelp
Love that they have a permanent location at Strange Roots, so you can get food as you enjoy beer and the great outside space. Since the businesses are separate, you aren't able to order food at the bar, only on the app on a separate check from your drinks. They have a few classic options available including a burger, grilled chicken club, and hot chicken sandwich along with some sides. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Club and really enjoyed it. The pickle brined chicken was juicy and tender, bacon was a little overcooked but crispy, and the spring mix and tomatoes in top were fresh. The spicy avocado and aioli were delicious sauces on top that added a punch of flavor to every bite. And the potato chips were a fun crunch and slightly salty aftertaste. We also ordered a side of food, which were small and overcooked, so I wasn't a big fan in addition to having to pay an extra $1 for any dipping sauce. My biggest complaint is our food took an hour and a half to make. It was a busy day at the brewery, but that timing seemed very excessive and we even considered going somewhere else to eat. Overall the sandwich was pretty good, but honestly you can get more food, better quality, and quicker for the same price at other restaurants.

Yelp
This place is the brick and mortar location for the food truck, and is located at Strange Roots Experimental Ales. You order online, using the QR code that is posted. It is a great location with a nice outdoor patio. To the food... the In N Aht is the Pittsburgh, fancy take on the best fast food burger. This IS the best burger in Pittsburgh, hands down. The burger is two smashed patties , grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and secret sauce. It is perfectly executed. The other sandwich offerings are also the bomb, even if the In N Aht is the best. The fries, just like In-N-Out, are nothing to right home about, but the burger is worth the trip.

Yelp
Detailed review: In-n-Aht Burger- 1/5 The meat wasn't super flavorful and the burger was overall very heavy. Chewing it was a struggle and it killed my stomach shortly after eating it. Loaded fries- 1/5 The fries were soggy and limp and the sauces tasted store bought. I'm 99% sure I have a jar of the same exact avocado sauce they put on top that I bought from Walmart. It is one of my favorite salsas though so it gets a point for that. Overall, don't meet your heroes kids. Super disappointed since I've been following them on Instagram for a while and was hoping their food tasted as good as it looks. Hopefully they were just having an off day when I visited and it's not always this bad

Yelp
This was the first time ever ordering and ever walking into this place. I placed an online order and the chopped cheese and loaded fries were really good but, the service was terrible. I approached the front bar and was trying to explain it was my first time in the restaurant and wasn't sure where to pick up my food. I couldn't get a full sentence out before being interrupted! I kept trying to ask questions only to be interrupted with an irritated, short, impatient attitude. The guy didn't have a single person he was waiting on, literally not one person sitting at the bar. Also to mention that only half of the tables were occupied and it was a Wednesday at 6 o'clock. If you're looking for decent food with a decent environment and terrible service, give it a try.

Yelp
Oh Pittsburgh Sandwich Society, I am so happy I finally tried your burger! When I first moved to Pittsburgh, I scoured Yelp for the best burger and this one was at the top of the list. The burger patties were so juicy and flavorful and the ingredients were fresh. The fries were also fantastic. I could sing praises about the food all day but the real winner was the extra convenient ordering process. I usually hate QR codes and online ordering but the signage around the brewery was so simple. The online menu was very clear, detailed, and simple to order. They managed to cut down on many of the annoying steps when ordering online. I also appreciated the texts for pickup and the quick service. I am looking forward to visiting again to try additional menu items.

Yelp
Tried to order a burger at 8:53 and have a beer at Strange root(they are open until 10). PSS closed at 9. They wouldn't take my order. Their loss. I guess they don't need my business and they cost Strange Roots my business as well. If you are open until 9. Take orders until 9. I highly recommend not going here. They don't give a F*** about their customers. I'll find a burger and a beer somewhere else.

Yelp
It's been a couple years since I've been to the sandwich society, and a first at their strange roots location. Parking for is a bit challenging in this area as well, but we found a lot to the back/side of the restaurant that seemed like the place to be. I got the in n aht burger and really enjoyed it. I told my husband "it wasn't anything special or unique in terms of a burger, but it was absolutely delicious" Food came pretty quickly after making an online order. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
This place is on a growing list of concepts that are destroying the service industry. Everything is app based and self served -- you order, you pay, you get your own drinks, you get your own food when they text you, you get your own plastic ware, napkins, and condiments if they have them. The default 15% tip was confusing. For what? For the bartender who explained how difficult their system is? If you approach this "restaurant" as if it were a food truck with an option to sit inside, you might avoid the disappointment. Otherwise, the food was great.

Yelp
Haven't been to the Sandwich Society since they've been in the Strange Roots location but used to frequent the food truck. My go-to is the hot chicken sandwich. The chicken breast is nicely breaded and staff are usually really generous with the pickles. Flavors work well together but the best level isn't for the faint of heart! Be sure to order through online as there is no one taking food orders at Strange Roots. Once I figured this out, the order got placed and food was ready in 15-20 minutes. Nice experience all around and I aim to be back for more soon!

Yelp
Love that this place is in a fantastic brewery! Totally recommend! You order everything through the app and then it is set in boxes for you to pick up. Great flavors and they have great specials during the weekend

Yelp
Probably the best burger in the city right now. Cool outdoor seating and a good arrangement with the beer place. They have live music too which is great.

Yelp
Can't go wrong w literally anything here. Love the move to Strange Roots too. Such a fun place to get some drinks + food

Yelp
Have been a fan of PSS and stopped by the truck many times. Now at Strange Roots and the food is still great. You can now get a nice beer to go with it. You use the QR code to order and they text you that it is ready. The Pork Summer Party sandwich is so good. with picked onions and some cheese and a little heat. PSS seems to come up with some very good varieties of sandwiches. There is a nice outdoor seating area, some of it has cover if it is a hot sunny day.

Yelp
Pittsburgh Sandwich Society's jr deluxe burger is probably my favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh

Yelp
This was first first time at the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society. I ordered the In-N-Aht Double Burger and OH BOY, it was delicious. I wouldn't change anything to my burger. The patty was juicy and the char-B-Q wing had a nice kick to it. Ordering the food online was easy and simple. Service was quick and easy. The red ribbon Mint ginger ale was nice to finish off the meal. The ambiance is nice and relaxing. You can either seat inside or outside. I will be visiting this place again. What a great place!

Yelp
We made it to the grand opening of the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society's brick and mortar location at the Strange Roots Millvale Taproom. What a match made in heaven! Ordering was made easy by scanning a QR code at our table in the beer garden. After ordering online, we received a text when our food was ready, and enjoyed Strange Roots beers in the meantime. Everything was fantastic! My husband and dad both got the In-n-Aht burger and thought it was great. I went with the Hot Chicken Sandwich and it was was both tender and flavorful. We split 2 orders of fries between the 3 of us. We were all stuff from our sandwiches, but the fries were so good we couldn't leave any behind. Overall, the price point is very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes! Strange Roots is one of our favorite hang out spots, and Pittsburgh Sandwich Society takes it to the next level.

Yelp
This was my first time enjoying food from the brick and mortar location in Strange Roots. In the past I've tried their food truck. Tonight a friend and I went to Strange Roots solely to eat. We had been at another brewery beforehand and wanted dinner and saw Pittsburgh Sandwich Society now has a kitchen at another brewery. We went inside and grabbed a table. Found out that we can't order food at the bar like we wanted to, but instead had to do it as a mobile order by scanning a QR code on the table. I opted for a cheesesteak and my buddy had the Nashville Hot Chicken. I've never tried the cheesesteak so I was hoping it would be good. After living briefly in Philly, I'm kind of critical of cheesesteaks now. In the past I've had a burger and the hot chicken and enjoyed them. So our food didn't take too long. We got a text saying it was ready and you go up to a stand beside the bar and look at the boxes to find yours. One bit of critique here, the name prints lightly on the slip and in the evening the bar area is somewhat dark, so reading the names on the slips to find yours isn't all that easy. Anyway get the box back to the table to find a gooey, delicious looking sandwich. I wasn't sure how big it was going to be, it wasn't huge but it was a decent size. The sandwich was really good. The cheese was especially tasty. My buddy who calls himself a Nashville Chicken critic said it was one of the best he's had outside is Nashville. So all in all it was a good experience.

Yelp
Had this for the first time at the Strange Roots Millvale Taproom. It was the first nice day of the year so the breweries in Millvale were crowded. You could scan a code and order your food while hanging outside or standing in line for a beer. Unfortunately, I don't think they were anticipating so many people and had sold out of most of their items by the time we got there. I had the Ol' Dirty Flat To Burger. I would argue it was one of the best burgers in pittsburgh as long as you don't mind your food a little greasy. It was so delicious. I tried some of my friends french fries, they weren't my favorite but the burger was a 10/10.

Andrea R.

Yelp
Nice area to sit and relax, burger patty was good- but everything else was ok. Watch the full experience here: https://youtu.be/3yIqZzmrvP8?t=163

Yelp
The chicken sandwich was superb! The environment was also very nifty with a super cute outdoor seating set up

Jamie S.

Yelp
Love everything we've ever ordered here! Favorites are the In n Aht and the "JBC" (pregnant and was craving Wendy's and this blew it out of the water). Also love that we can bring our dogs and the outdoor seating. Never overly crowded like some other places. Really enjoy the beer and drink offerings from Strange Roots!
