The Best Restaurants in Northwest Portland’s Slabtown | Eater Portland

"This Korean Chinese chain restaurant recently opened in the former Chimaek Town space, offering a self-serve ingredients bar which customers then choose to turn into soup or stir fry at custom spice levels. The use of spice at Pixiu Mala Hongtang is masterful, particularly the chile oil’s blend of star anise, cloves, fennel, and both gochujang and Sichuan peppercorn." - Alex Frane

Google
Really good broth. Plenty of add ins. Decent sauce tray. And friendly staff. Can't wait to go back and dial in my add ins. There are plenty of reviews that mention the price and mine came in around $16 plus my soju. My response is that the food is good so build the bowl you want and don't worry about the price. If you want a cheap bowl then just add noodles and about a cheap bowl.

Excellent meal! We both had a stir fry, and they were both delicious. Bright, well-balanced spiciness. We'll definitely be back! Highly recommend!!

Stumbled upon this place because our dinner plans fell through at a different restaurant. We were greeted right away when we walked in. She was sitting down at a table in the corner eating when we arrived. The owner I’m assuming, was the one who greeted us. Older female. Not friendly at all and was rushing us to fill our bowl with the items we wanted. Minimum was $17.99 she said and then pay by the pound after you fill your bowl. My friend and I had questions and she was so rude about answering them. She treated us like we were an inconvenience. The food was really good but I don’t think I’ll come back due to how horrible the customer service was.

Google
Nice place with a great atmosphere, and the food was delicious. The soup base has a peanut-like taste—unfortunate for me since I don’t like peanuts, but it still tasted good. The mala flavor isn’t too strong, making it a good option even for those not used to intense mala spice. The spice level wasn’t super high, but I can handle spice well, so it might be just right for others. Would definitely come again!

Google
This was one of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. We arrived right after opening so no one was there yet. The owner was super friendly and warm. I loved the option to completely customize my bowl with all the delicious ingredients. We both went for the soup version rather than the stir fry. I had spice level 3, which was perfect for me as I love spicy. My husband had level 1 and it was spicy for him but not too much. We both added beef, which is a few dollars extra but worth it. You can make a delicious dipping sauce at the sauce bar. You pay by the ounce and ours were each about $23. The broth is rich, flavorful, spicy, and deeply satisfying. We’re planning to go back soon. I could easily eat this every day and not get sick of it.

Google
Very tasty broth, lots of toppings, and a clean and comfortable vibe. Beware of trying to get a little bit of everything though, your total can easily be over 30$ by weight!

Google
Extremely friendly service and addicting soup broth! If it wasn’t so piping hot, I could have drank that broth with a straw—I couldn’t get enough. I loved all of the serve yourself options you could add in, as many were unique and not what you’d find at another stir-fry type spot. You pay extra for beef or lamb, and I can’t comment on the portion or quality, as I found the bar to have plenty of options. Considering how clean and fresh everything was, I’d assume the red meat is also top quality. I can’t wait to come here again!

Google
The food and service was fantastic. You assemble your food in a bowl, adding whatever veggies, noodles, and toppings you would like. They have some meats on the self-serve line such as bacon, shrimp, spam, fish balls, squid, etc. Your bowl is then weighed, and you choose if you want soup or stir fry. You pick a spicy level. I got a 3, and found it to be perfect (I enjoy spicy!) You can also add brisket at this time. The food is prepared, with larger pieces being cut up into manageable sizes. It is cooked, seasoned, and brought to the table. It was delicious, we will be back!

Yelp
Soup and spicy (or mild) lovers unite! I was surprised to find this spot tucked around the corner from NW 23rd. I often find myself meandering the area to scout new bites to try and was not expecting to find this Korean-Chinese customizable soup/stir fry spot! There's a self-serve bar of veggies, seafood, and different noodles where you can choose which toppings/add-ins you want into your malatang (soup) or mala xiangguo (stir fry). You also customize which spice level you would like your dish at (scale of 0-5) and my sister who is big spice lovers got a level 2 and was satisfied spice wise already! I personally got a level of 1, and it was perfect for me (I can chug a full water bottle while eating hot Cheetos lol). After the self-serve bar you weigh your bowl and can choose whether or not you also want to add pork or beef in your dish) The staff are so polite and help guide you through the ordering process, on top of any appetizers (a la carte) items that you can add to your meal! I also love the fact that they have a private lot (only 4 spots I believe, but in this area- that's gold!)

Yelp
I have come here so many time since opening and it is a favorite. There's no place in Portland that does it quite like them, and they do malatang VERY well. After walking in and being directed to your table, you're free to get up and make your way to the selection bar to decide what items you want in either a soup base or a stir-fry. I always like the switch it up, but I love how their bar area is always kept so clean and the items are always very fresh (veggies are washed well!). I honestly prefer the spicy stir fry but even their no spice (and you can get it with spice if you want) soup broth, it is so comforting and delicious. I cannot spread how good this place is nor how kind and accommodating the staff is; you have to go check it out yourself! Plus! There's al carte items that, while I have not yet tried, look so delicious, as well as a sauce bar!

Yelp
I was on my way to a dumpling house in the neighborhood but after 7 minutes of searching for parking in the pouring rain, I gave up. Fate put me in front of this Korean specialty place and it had a parking lot! so I stopped. This used to be a sushi joint, one more in a long line of okay sushi spots in Portland but it is now a sleek, clean, Korean soup kitchen. Sort of like a Mongolian grill but so much better. You choose the things you want from a long line of familiar, and some less (unless you are an aficionado of Korean cuisine, perhaps) and place them in a stainless steel bowl using clean stainless tongs I chose bok choy, bean sprouts, black mushroom, bitter melon, long bean, spinach, parsley, bamboo shoot and a couple of veggies I don't know the name of. I added extremely fresh raw large shrimp for my protein from an array of things I can only guess at, though I recognized squid, bacon rolls, pork balls, and tofu. You can then ask the chef to add pork belly, lamb, or beef if you want. i did not. They weigh it and take it away. I chose stir fry instead of soup because i'd been eating homemade soup for two days. It was returned to my table piping hot by a smiling, friendly young Korean woman, seasoned beautifully with sesame oul, chilis, garlic, perhaps a splash of cooking wine, and seasoned peanuts. Delicious. A man across the way from me went with the soup version and slurped happily away at his bowl. Korean pop music played at a reasonable volume, upbeat. It was not inexpensive. My stir fry lunch set me back $22. But it was definitely fresh, tasty, and its unlike any place else in Portland I know of.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place because mala tang is one of my favorite things! After finding out this is a Korean/Chinese fusion, I was even more excited since those are my two most common go to types of cuisines. Personally, the price in my opinion was a bit steep. My boyfriend's bowl (added beef) came to $26 and mine (added beef was $18). But that was okay because I would pay more for a good bowl of mala tang. But sadly, I felt the soup was mid... it's lacking the numbing spice which is what mala translates too. So I was a bit disappointed. The sauce bar options was okay, it was pretty good with the beef. I just wish they had soy sauce and dark vinegar!:)

Yelp
Nestled in a busy street, this location has a small dedicated parking lot for its customers. The interior was quite spacious and clean. The service was quite friendly and helpful when we had questions about the items at the self-serve bar, where you can select your preferred ingredients from an array of meats, seafood, vegetables, tofu, and noodles. All of the ingredients looked and tasted fresh. The spice level is customizable and you can choose to make it as a Mala hot pot or a stir fry. The ingredients soaked up the rich, spicy broth and ignited my taste buds with a numbing sensation. The stir fry does cost a bit more but it was tasty as well! They charge by weight so you can end up with an unexpected bill.

Yelp
Eh, probably one and done for me as nothing wowed. The thinly cut beef was the standout. I don't quite get the allure, hasn't Chang's been doing this for decades? Kudos to the busser/server who moves around the dining area with lightening speed. However, she ran into a customer with her cart and looked frazzled. Just chill as your aggressive mobility probably only saved seconds. Good for the neighborhood, I hope they prosper.

Yelp
First time trying malatang and it was so delicious! You get to pick your fillings from a buffet of veggies, herbs, noodles, and fish cakes. There is a wide variety to choose from. It's priced by weight so grab as much as you want to pay. They do either mala hongtang (soup broth) or mala xiang guo (stir fry) and you can choose your spice level. On the menu it says the stir fry tends to be more spicy, so keep that in mind. I went with the Mala Hongtang at Medium Hot spice level. I was afraid it was going to be too spicy, but it was actually just right! The broth has a creaminess that balances the spice, so the flavor is vibrant. I did load up on my fillings but I was able to finish with a full and satisfied belly. Will definitely return when I'm in the area!

Yelp
Located at the old Haru sushi location. A new Korean/Chinese Mala hot pot (of sort) self serving restaurant measured by the weight of ingredients you choose at the self serve counter. You choose your ingredients, they weight it and send it off to the cook to prepare it in a Korean style soup or dry pot style. I chose the soup. Very friendly staff. Food was very tasty, if you like mala spice. Very interesting concept. I went over board on picking out the ingredients so it got a bit pricy for me.

Yelp
This place is a delight for anyone looking for Korean style mala tang. You know what I'm talking about if you're up to date on the latest Korean Mukbangs. You're able to pick out whatever ingredients you want to put in, but be careful because the weight quickly adds up. They charge $3.49 for every 100 g for the soup base and $4.49 for every 100 grams for the dry base. The quality of everything was great and everything. I'm looking for in a "put what you want to put in" kind of place. Staff is very friendly and very willing to help and answer any questions. I will definitely come back here again.

Yelp
My new go-to place, been here a few times already! I dont enjoy spicy(i can hardly handle) food, so I'm happy that they have a non-spicy soup! I get their lowest level spicy for the stir fried, and I think its quite tolerable! This is a diy/price by weight concept. Their stir fried does cost more than their soup, but both are definitely a must try! I was never a soup person, but I fell in love with this soup! Its peanutty, and reminds me of a thicker, creamier miso? Stir fried: i get their lowest spice level, either udon or the thicker potato noodles, bacon!!, add in a few cheese or sweet potato filled ricecakes, squid, and crown daisy(my fave veggie!), fishcake, mushrooms Soup: non spicy, ramen(because its nostalgic), parsey and crown daisy, sausage!, fishcake, ricecakes, mushrooms Also, try their guobaorou, deepfried pork! It comes with a sweet/sour sauce. Great dish to share between 2+ people Friendly staff, but there was one minor incident where I thought they could have handled it better(offering to remake or discount). Note: they have a small parking lot!

Yelp
Former KFC spot across from St Honore is now a Korean soup/Mongolian grill place. Pick your goodies and pay by weight - add skewers / meats for additional. Pick soup or stir fry and spice level and off you go. Soup and stir fry were good. Staff super friendly. A bit pricey tho

Yelp
Ok so I'm a little conflicted about this restaurant because it was delicious but I felt I was missing instructions and the process was a little confusing. As many others mentioned in their reviews - this place is PRICY because the way it is structured by weight and honestly it is extremely shocking when you get to the end to find out your bowl is $35-$45 (or maybe even higher!) I think the trick here is get a bowl to share with at least 2-3 people and maybe then it will be worth it? Walking in, there was a sign for to wait to be seated but we waited for a few minutes and no one came so we just followed the flow of another group that was already there (they seemed to know what they were doing) I will admit that I didn't really look up at the screen to see the pricing and started putting things in my bowl that I wanted until I got to the end. All I knew before I came was that it was by weight. After looking at the picture I took more closely, I did see that 3.5oz is about $4 for the hot pot (soup) and a little higher for the dry hot pot (stir fry). If I can make a suggestion for this business - instead of putting that information up on the screen out of the line of sight, can you please make a sign with simple pictures with pricing and instructions on what to do when you first walk in? This would be super helpful for first-timers and set some expectations or pricing upfront. At the register, we were asked which type we wanted and the type of meat, we both went with lamb and at this point you get your receipt but you don't pay? That was a little odd and confusing because then you have to keep your ticket to go back to the register to pay later. Why not just take payment right then and there? After sitting down, we got water and cups and waited a little bit for our bowls to be ready. Please note they do tell you there are peanuts in the soup so if you have a peanut allergy this is not the place for you. My friend got the mild one and I got medium spicy I think it was 3? Or whatever their most popular option is. The soup was flavorful on its own and the lamb was tender but holy moly they weren't kidding about the spice! It was a little more spicier than I expected but it was good. However obviously with the amount neither of us finished our bowl and took half of each bowl home. In hindsight we should have shared it and maybe ordered an appetizer or something. I think this place is a cool experience and the food is good is it very expensive since the weight can vary a lot based on what you like and want to add to your DIY bowl. If I do come back it will definitely be shared with someone else.

Yelp
Very casual. Pick your own food, like various vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, meats, seafood (has just shrimp & squid). Price is by weight. Then choose either stir fry or soup. I opted for stir fry, while my bro in law chose soup. Both were good, but I liked the stir fry a tad more. Then spiciness level. If stir fry, they give you rice as well. We went there on a Tuesday, so it wasn't busy at all. Service was quick. Server/cashier explained everything to us, as it was our first time. It is pricey, my bowl was $35. Sorta kinda like a hot pot, but you don't cook it yourself.

Yelp
The interesting concept had lured me here for dinner on a Sunday. You get a bowl and choose all the toppings you want cooked in either a broth or stir fry. I chose the broth and it was rich and creamy. I was worried that it would be a numbing type of spice but it ended up being more similar to a tonkotsu broth. My favorite topping was the sweet potato tteobokki. It didn't take too long for them to bring my dish cooked in the broth. Def worth a try at least once.
google avatar

Liana L.

Yelp
Much needed hot pot spot to the Portland area! Love the concept of choosing what you want to put in your bowl and paying by weight. And so many good topping choices! Highly recommend the thick rice noodle and sweet potato/cheese rice cakes. The broth soup was also delicious! Choose between soup or soupless and spice levels. I chose the level 1 spice which had the perfect kick for me. The side dishes are also amazing. My favorite was the Guobaorou, deep fried pork sirloin in sweet and sour sauce. The pork was so tender and the rice flour batter reminded me of mochi like. The staff was so kind and sweet! Can't wait to be back! @feedingthehangry

Yelp
Such a comfort food. You basically pick your ingredients and they will charge based on weight. You can pick between the soup or the stir fry and the spice level. I picked the soup and medium spicy. As someone who can handle a little spice, it was perfect. The soup is rich but spicy. It's not very numbing. I recommend including the brisket, it improves the taste. Also, be mindful of the amount that you pick because it adds up fast and you end up with too much food.
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
It's cool that Portland finally has a place that does this. I do like the ability to make my own stir fry/hot pot. There's also a few side items that you can order. They will charge you by the weight of your food. I believe it's $3.59 for 3.5oz. I did enjoy my broth, which was the hot one.
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
First, the minimum price per bowl is going to be $15. I think it well-worth the price! I chose to load up on my favorite things (bok choi, squash, mushrooms, broccoli) and opted for #2 level of heat ( but I'm a wimp). Delicious. This is a perfect place for those damp fall-thru-spring days (or, like today, a surprisingly cool summer day). Being a "functional vegetarian" ( meaning I limit my animal eating to those raised humanely) I'd like to know the source of the brisket because I'd like to try it.

Yelp
psa: there is a small parking lot for pixiu patrons !! for all the people who do not like parallel parking, this is a nice plus! service: my friends and i walked in around 7-8 pm and we were greeted by a nice lady who i observed to be bussing the tables, the waitress, and the cashier. we sat at an open table and she brought over pickled radish, utensils, napkins, and water for us. when we told her that it was our first time here, she kindly explained how the whole process of choosing out toppings for our food and how they measure the weight of the ingredients to charge us for our meal. make sure you keep your receipt with you order number to pay after! food: right off the bat, i felt that this place was a bit expensive for what it is. some noodles, vegetables, mushrooms, and squid pieces cost me ~$18 (this was me choosing a smaller portion of food) and i decided to add on some beef for $3.99 more. the amount of beef added was a bit sad. i got the dry version with the no. 2 spice option and the flavor and spice was pretty good! the people in the kitchen chop up the veggies and cook the food for you. we received our food pretty quickly right after putting our order in which was nice. however i might opt for the soup option next time as it seemed to have a larger portion (for the eyes at least). despite the small portion appearance, i did get full and even hit up snowy village after to cool off! a great combination. ambiance: the restaurant is clean, with plenty of tables. however there aren't many decorations and the brown and gray colors make the place seem a bit tighter than the place actually is. nice big windows for good lighting, and good ventilation too. overall i'm not sure if i would come back again, but a solid 3.5-4/5 stars (points knocked down because of the price, but great service and flavors imo).

Yelp
The first thing I didn't realize was that there is a parking lot for the restaurant so we parked on the street. Lesson learned! We came around 1:45pm on a Saturday and there were plenty of seats open. Upon walk in, you have to wait to be seated. We didn't wait long until they noticed us. There was only 2 people working the front, 1 busser, and possibly a couple in the back. You have the option to do a stir fry or soup and we tried both! You start with adding your ingredients into a silver bowl, but be careful of adding too much since it goes by weight! All ingredients are uncooked and in whole pieces. They will cut everything up once they cook it. All of the ingredients weren't labeled so you'll have to look at the little stand they provide on top, which I found to be a little complicated to look back and fourth. Each food category wasn't exactly next to each other either so I would say take your time before grabbing anything so you don't end up with something you don't want in your dish. My partner and I both ended up about around $20 and I would say it was a lot of food. The stir fry was a little more oily than to our liking at medium-hot spice and the soup could have used a little more flavor at hot spice. We weren't a big fan of the clear noodles because it made it hard to eat with chopsticks. I recommend udon/ramen/glass noodles for the soup and udon/pad Thai noodles for the stir fry. At the register, they will ask if you want beef or lamb to your meal, whether soup or dry option. It seemed like the option wasn't charged for the stir fry option but for the soup. I will say the beef is pretty good and to not add too much of other protein. The main thing I was looking for was condiments on the side to add just a bit more flavor. We also ordered the Guobaorou, which is deep fried pork in sweet and sour sauce. It was definitely an interesting flavor, but I personally was not a fan. They will weigh, take your food bowl and provide a receipt so that you can pay after. I couldn't tell if you are suppose to go up to the register again or wait for someone to come to your table to pay. I saw it both ways and just went up to the register to pay. There was big party that came in after us which seemed really busy for 2 people working in the front so it was hard to track them down while they were trying to clean tables and trying to bring utensils and water to customers that just got seated. The restaurant overall seemed very clean and organized upon walk in. It's not a very big restaurant and a corner restaurant, so the sign is easily missed. It's straight across from the St. Honoré Bakery.

Yelp
As a hot pot lover, I am so happy to find this restaurant. What is different from other hot pot style restaurant is that I can customize the ingredient to be cooked in the soup (adding a lot of vegetables and trumpet mushrooms and meat, so good in the mala spicy broth!) Even my preschooler kid loves the non-spicy pot. Nice vibe, family friendly and clean. Friendly staff. so definitely will come back. One suggestion is that if ceramic or stainless steel bowls can be used for steaming hot soup instead of plastic bowls that would be perfect.

Yelp
WARNING: the default malatang soup contains peanuts but they can make the soup peanut-free upon request. Pixiu Mala Hongtang is a Korean-Chinese fusion Malatang restaurant rather than a Chinese style Malatang, so the flavor is a bit different than I expected, but I enjoyed trying the Korean interpretation for Malatang. The soup has more of a nutty, creamy flavor to it (rather than a typical bone broth base) and the spice level is bit more mild compared to Chinese Malatang. Like most Malatang restaurants, they have a self serve bar where you can pick out the ingredients and then they weigh the ingredients you select at the front counter. The meat is priced separately. They had a good selection of different ingredients, including tofu, seafood, vegetables, noodles, and more. The main downside is that don't see the price until you weigh it at the counter, so you might end up with a unexpected bill.
google avatar

Yelp
No no no! Experience, price, flavor. All bad. I had a 45$ plate of... noodles(?). Albeit the shrimp (sad frozen Sysco special) added 5$ to this tasteless plate. I guess that makes the water-logged lotus root 9$ a slice. WTF? Oily and so crazy expensive that I could have had a few dishes at Kann for the price. The vegetarian is equally as expensive.

Yelp
So exciting to see that a place for Malatang and Mala Xiang Guo has opened in Portland! I've heard about how popular these dishes were, but we never had a dedicated place to get it until now. The space is super clean, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. You're able to customize your dish by selecting your ingredients from the "buffet". These ingredients are then weighed at the end and you're able to add things like skewers and meat. You choose your spice level and what dish you'd like. We only got the level 1 spice and that was plenty good for me as someone who loves spicy food. Both dishes were really good! The vegetables and meat were cooked nicely. I highly preferred the lamb over the beef brisket. My only quirk though was it was pretty pricey, and you really don't know what you're signing up for when grabbing your ingredients before it gets weighed. Other than that, it's a great place for a warm and comforting meal!

Yelp
The experience at Pixiu Mala Hong Tang is nothing short of culinary transcendence. Their soup, a bewitching brew that ensnares your palate, is indeed the only soup you'll ever want. It's a sublime combination of flavors that evokes a sensory voyage with every spoonful. The unique selling point is the customizable spice level, which allows you to tailor the soup to your preferred degree of heat. It's an exciting touch that adds a layer of personalization to the dining experience. My chosen level of spiciness delivered a satisfying kick, accentuating the symphony of flavors without overwhelming my taste buds. As for the fresh veggies, the selection is impressively diverse and fresh. You choose your desired ingredients, and the skilled chefs work their magic. I went with a vegetable-heavy option and was thoroughly impressed by the exquisite balance between the rich broth and crisp, vibrant veggies. The beef is simply a must-try. It's tender, flavorful, and an excellent addition to the soup, enhancing the depth of the dish without overpowering the delicate vegetables. Their fried rice deserves a standing ovation. It was an explosion of flavor, a perfect symphony of fluffy grains, enticing seasoning, and perfectly cooked ingredients. Each bite was like tasting the essence of Asian culinary mastery. In conclusion, dining at Pixiu Mala Hong Tang isn't just about feeding the body--it's a soul-enriching experience. The excellent service, thoughtfully crafted food, and personalized options make it an absolute gem. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone seeking to expand their culinary horizons.

Yelp
I have been wanting something like this to come to Portland for a while and was super excited when I saw Pixiu Mala Hongtang was opening up! We tried a bit of everything on the menu and over all everything was tasty. We tried both the soupy Mala Hong Tang and the Mala Xiang Guo stir fry. Both are good but I am a soup lover by heart. The ingredients were fresh and the staff was super nice! I will say it could have been a bit more flavorful but me and my partner ended up mixing the soup and stir fry items in a small bowl and that was really good.

Yelp
Literally so good! I've been wanting a Korean Malatang place because it's so hard to find in Portland! The pricing actually was pretty good for a full size - very comparable to actual prices in Korea, which is a a good thing! The stir fry is a bit pricier than the soup and doesn't have a non-spicy option, but the spice level is manageable! My new go-to customizable place.

Yelp
Incredible food, music, ambiance, and service! The staff member that helped my friends and I was so sweet and welcoming and patiently explained how the restaurant works. The food is sooo good and flavorful! Half of us did the stir fry while the other half did soup. I'm salivating as I write this that's how good it was! I want to come back. Thank you to the sweet staff member who played excellent music and for being so welcoming and kind!

Great food (a bit pricey; be careful while picking up the ingredients... control your emotions), loved the stir fry and Aoup

Yelp
The food was great - I had soup and the broth quiet tasty. I would go back again to try the stir fry one. The price not too expensive. I hope this place will last forever. Sorry , forgot to take a pic

Yelp
Very good make your own noodle soup place, I love the rice cake and non spicy is available. Stir fry instead of soup is also available

Yelp
Tried this today and enjoyed my experience. Food was very flavorful and fresh and the (self-selected/served) options were very broad. The biggest component keeping me from 5 stars is the price, both in terms of understanding how your bill comes to be but also in terms of where my bill landed. $25 for a bowl is a lot, however I did enjoy it and do feel like I will be back, so that, to me, must mean I felt like it was worth it. Highlights in my bowl were the tofu skin, rice cake, shrimp (surprised it wasn't over-cooked) and the chili oil, which had great flavor and brought the heat

Yelp
I think this soup base is the tastiest and most savory I've had for malatang. It is a little on the sweet side, nuttier and less spicy. It's located at a very popping location of portland. People who work there are nice. I like that the neighborhood is a great place to walk around.

Yelp
Really delicious and unique food. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, and the food comes out quick in generous portions. Definitely give it a shot.

Yelp
First time having Hot Pot, sooo good. I highly recommend, very reasonably priced. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
It's the only Korean style mala hong tang in the area for now but wouldn't recommend, especially if you're looking for that flavor that you get in Korea. Same owners as the previous business in the space -- nice folks. There wasn't much mala flavor which was a bummer, and although the level two spice was advertised as equivalent to buldakbokkeummyun it was way too mild. The fried pork dish was a pretty poor representation of guobaoruo, ours was cold and didn't have the signature crispy/chewy/stretchiness that you'd expect. We paid 80 dollars tip included for one normal size stir fry, one guobaoruo, and one bottle of soju and were pretty shocked. Really was hoping to like the place but the food:price value was just non existent. I'd recommend a dry hot pot from one of the many Chinese places in the city for half the price and double the flavor.

Yelp
Great concept for building your own Hotpot. Broth was flavorful just needed more topping options. Quick and fast service.

Yelp
Like all the other review I'm so happy we finally have a Korean malatang close to home. It's the Korean version of the Chinese dish so it doesn't have that five spice(?) flavor I'm not too crazy about. Service was quick and friendly, food was delicious and price was decent for the quality. Planning on quenching my cravings here at least twice a month! (Hope they will eventually have punch cards!!) Pro tip: they have aprons you can wear so you don't get mala oil splashed on your clothes!

Yelp
This place takes me back to Korea. When you first walk in you are greeted by friendly employees who guide you through the whole process. You pick up a bowl and put whatever ingredients you want for your dish(either soup base or dry stir fried) and they weigh it at the register. Then they bring it to your table all cooked at your preferred spice level. I love how they have all sorts of veggies and noodles. The inside of the restaurant and the ingredient bar are is very clean and the whole experience was fun and the food is amazing. A must try for anyone who loves Chinese Korean fusion food. Definitely will come back often!

Yelp
You pick your own ingredients then they assemble them for you. The broth is very rich, and the veggies are cooked just right, not too soft and not too raw. My friend got the stir fried option, and that was good too. Would come back!

Yelp
I was next door at boostiv and saw that this new Korean restaurant was here where Hara sushi was and though I'd just try it. It is pretty good kind of like a buffet style hot pot where you pick the ingredients and then they stir fry or make a soup out of it. They were also accommodating of my gluten allergy and if you are keto you could just opt out of all the noodles.

Yelp
So delicious, amazing tingly mala spice. I absolutely adore it when you order extra spicy and it actually delivers

Yelp
We ordered several time through UberEats. We LOVE it. Can you guys make your topping options by quantity instead of check mark? I would like to add triple tofu, double sausage, and quadruple mushrooms. :)

Yelp
Will definitely be returning! My friend and i chose the hotpot option and we both enjoyed our meals- the spice level was just right and so many add-in options, also the staff was super helpful and kind with guiding us through the process! Also the restaurant is super cute and there are signs everywhere that guide you through.

Yelp
the service is great, they were really kind and helpful !! the atmosphere was comfortable and peaceful, the area was pretty clean as well ! and finally, the food was delicious and the price was reasonable !! ^^ if you enjoy spicy food, they have different spice levels too. they charge by weight so you can put however much you want !!! you can choose between hotpot or stir fry. (p.s. they made an error with my order since i asked for stir fry but it came out as hotpot but no worries, they changed it right away when i told them about it !!)

Yelp
Overpriced Korean restaurant that seems to be doing everything wrong. I had lunch there with 3 other friends. Works kind of like a Mongolian Grill, but at double the price....at least for me and the other friend who ordered something similar. You load up a bowl with veggies, noodles, tofu, shrimp....then find out after that when they weigh it after you've piled everything up what it's going to cost. In 2 of our cases....$27 & $33 respectively.....for lunch...plus tip. We chose the stir fry option, and apparently they charge more (? ) for that than when they add broth to the mix ( broth gets you a discount? ). I chose the least spicy option, and it was still quite spicy ( The choice STARTS at medium spicy )....with little other flavor, unfortunately. My 2 other friends paid around $16-$17 for their veggies with broth, and seemed satisfied, except for what they were charged. If you wanted to add lamb or brisket ( the only other meats seemed to be the shrimp or squid that apparently weren't charged extra for...except by weight....weird! ) they charge extra. Honestly, you are better off, both in terms of price and flavor, going to a Mongolian Grill type restaurant if choosing you own stir fry ingredients is your thing. Or just go to one of the many other Asian restaurants in the area where you can get a decent flavorful lunch for under $20 with tip. A lunch consisting of noodles with veggies and a few shrimp on top is hardly worth the $30 or so we were charged.
