13 of Maine's Most Essential Pizza Spots - Eater Maine

"In business since 1977, Pizza Joint offers pies in six sizes, from 8" to the monster 20". The pepperoni is applied liberally and might be the best around. There's also a South Portland location." - Eater Staff, Erin Perkins, Kate McCarty

Updated review as of 6/24/2023. My photos are from a previous visit. They used to be known for tons of pepperoni and toppings...and the pizza is still amazing but costs $31 bucks for a 14" pizza delivered. Thats almost 4 dollars per slice, and they are small slices. Two 14" slices equal 1 normal slice, in my opinion. I'll still go here I guess... but it is just really expensive for what you get.

Average extremely overpriced pizza….$19.65 for a 3 topping 10 INCH PIZZA!?!?! The staff were friendly and the initial flavor of the pizza was great. In going back for a second slice I quickly realized that the pizza was sliced on the wax paper in the box. The paper was so stuck to the bottom of the pizza I couldn’t peel it off, and ended up throwing away a few slices. Price and poor quality far outweigh the flavor of this pizza joint. Oh…and the small fries for 3 bucks gets you about 12 oven baked flavorless potato sticks.

I ordered small wedges and received burned wedges. The girl who took them out was blonde one and she dropped one wedge in-front of me a dirty counter and put it right back in the box. I told her to take it out and she gave me an altitude and took another wedge out inside. She was very rude. I don’t know if she was having a bad day but she should be trained better anyways. 🤦🏽‍♀️

When I heard $45 for a 1 topping pizza I thought we might be getting truffle cheese and caviar. Nope, just unremarkable with danish ham. It’s on par with good gas station pizza. Crust was a little soggy in the middle. For comparison I put it side by side with a $6 store brand frozen pizza and it was neither better nor worse. 3.5 stars on taste but .5 stars on value so overall I’m giving pizza joint 2 stars.

I do feel their pizza gets ridiculously expensive when you start adding toppings, but their sandwiches... Their rolls (which I hear they make using their pizza dough?) are completely amazing. As a result, their deli sandwiches are absolutely mind-blowing. (And feel reasonably-priced in the market...) I know most readers will say oh, decent sandwiches with a good roll. But no: THIS ROLL and the resulting sandwich is almost (no, not almost: really) the #$&$&#&. Please to enjoy!

The pizza is great, they use a pepperoni I've never seen or had elsewhere that I greatly enjoy. It's a slightly smaller, spicy version and they use tons of it. The downside is there are notables/chairs and the pizza is expensive even given today's prices.
