The 38 Best Restaurants in Tokyo, Japan | Eater

"Chef Yuki Motokura left a traditional Japanese kitchen to open Pizza Marumo. Motokura defines his pies as neither Neapolitan nor Roman, but as Tokyo-style. The charred pizza dough has the texture of freshly grilled mochi rice cakes, a comfort food for many Japanese diners. The extensive menu includes wagyu carpaccio, oven-roasted vegetables, and a long list of pizzas. The restaurant covers classic pizzas, as well as unique Japanese-style renditions incorporating umami-rich ingredients like katsuobushi (smoked skipjack tuna flakes), shaved kombu (kelp), shiitake mushrooms, or almost cheesy, soy-marinated tofu. Know before you go: Marumo is popular, so be sure to book a reservation via the restaurant’s website." - Yukari Sakamoto

Perfectly balanced pizzas with just the right char, bite and chew. Reservations are needed, but can try to walk in end of lunch or dinner service. Recommend to book at the bar so you can watch the magic happen. Everything on the menu is great and the staff are very kind.

The pizza here was as good as everyone says it is! It was really fun to sit at the counter and watch the chef make the pizzas and the smell in there is divine. Also I was able to order a half size appetizer since I was traveling solo and that normally isn’t available at most restaurants, so that was a very nice touch. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming! There were a wide variety of pizzas to choose from, I would come back to try more next time.

Tokyo has some great pizza places, especially if the traditional Neapolitan variety. I feel like this place has recently become popular and rightly so, since the owner worked at Savoy for a number of years. The ambiance is great, with lots of natural light and a modern vibe. I didn’t have a reservation (but I highly recommend it), but I showed up right at opening and they let me eat at the counter. To start, I ordered the focaccia with hummus and the baked cauliflower, and both were tasty. And of course I ordered the margherita pizza, and it was fantastic. The ingredients were fresh, and the crust was crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. It also folded well, so it was sloppy in the middle. The service was friendly and accommodating. An experience that you don’t want to miss.

A great choice for a date night or meeting friends. The atmosphere is great without being overly loud. It was about 90% foreigners when I went, and the staff/menu seems to be bilingual. Not my favorite pizza in Tokyo but definitely a solid choice, especially if you’re looking for a nice ambiance at a good price point. Will definitely be back to try more. (All of the pictures for two people was probably a little too much but they let you take the leftover pizza home!)

Had the bismarck and affogato for lunch recently. The pizza was excellent. Dough was crisp, nicely charred, and soft. It was also adequately fluffy with a nice chew, and had a nice saltiness. It is definitely up there as one of the better tokyo style neopolitan doughs I've had. The proscuitto, eggs, cheese, and tomato were a great combination. Pecan affogato was lovely too. That said, I did chew into a piece of rubber coming from my affogato towards the end of my meal, which was quite unfortunate given the very pleasant dining experience. As such, the dessert was waived by my server. I would love to believe that this was a one-off case as that would have been quite the scene had I swallowed it. That said, the pizzas here are still very worthy of a shout-out. P.s. Do reserve seats beforehand.

The pizza dough was soft, had a nice charcoal aroma, and was absolutely delicious! The service was also impressive—very polite and attentive staff. A friend recommended this place, so we decided to try it. It’s about a 5-minute walk from Ebisu Station, located right on the corner, making it easy to spot. They offer a wide variety of pizzas and drinks. The staff was friendly and professional, making the experience even better. We booked a table through TableCheck about a month in advance since the restaurant is quite popular—it even won the Best Pizza 2024 award! We went there to celebrate a birthday 🎂 and the dessert was amazing! Thank you for making our special meal even better 💗 On the day we visited, the restaurant was fully booked. For dinner, they have a 2-hour seating limit. The ambiance was great, with well-placed lighting creating a perfect mood. We chose to sit at the bar, which was a fantastic experience because we could watch the chefs make the pizzas. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options, as well as a private dining room. The restroom was clean, which is always a plus. We’ll definitely be coming back! The seasonal pizza menu looks very tempting.

Best vegan pizza I’ve ever had! We also tried their pickles and the hummus focaccia: delicious. Personnel is quick, polite and very welcoming. We had to make a reservation since it was pretty full even on Thursday night. I’ll definitely be coming back.

On a quest to find the best neapolitan pizza in Tokyo, Pizza Marumo was next on the list and was not disappointed. Reservations can be easily made on tablecheck. As with all of our reservations in Japan, we always arrive 10-15 mins ahead of the reservation (out of respect) and we're seated immediately at the counter. It was amazing watching the staff make and finish the pizzas. We started the meal with a caprese salad which had some seriously sweet tomatoes and awesome mozzarella cheese. Highly recommend this appetizer. The other appetizers we ordered were the avocado focaccia bread and the oven charred cauliflower. Both were awesome though I wasn't a fan of the garlic and anchovy sauce (glad we asked for that on the side). The first pizza we ordered was a 1/2 margherita and 1/2 marinara. Was amazed at how great the marinara tasted (likely due to the thinly sliced garlic). The pizza dough was flavorful and had a nice char and bite. Would definitely order the marinara the next time we dine here. The second pizza we ordered was the red hot chili. Again loved the balance of flavors throughout this pizza and especially loved the perfectly charred crust. Ended the meal with their tiramisu which was the perfect ending. The chopped pistachios added a unique flavor twist and texture. The lady fingers were soaked with the perfect amount of coffee and liquor. Probably my favorite neapolitan pizza thus far in Tokyo and would make an effort to come back in future trips back to Tokyo.
