Essential Restaurants for Casual and Work Lunches in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Once a tiny bastion of NY-style pizza in Golden Hill, this chain now has a handful of locations around San Diego, including in Imperial Beach and Ocean Beach. Along with classics (a cheese slice is $2.75), they’re known for their signature pies. The Sports Bar is a potato skin turned pizza, with bacon, sour cream, potatoes, and chives while the Frenchie has ham, pear, caramelized onion, and blue cheese." - Roxana Popescu

This is the second lactation, and it’s in a wonderful location by the beach which offers pizza by the slice with a full bar ,you can also bring your fur babies . excellent staff with great service and attitude , bring your appetite because the pizza is nice and crispy with fresh toppings , this is one of my top five of pizza places in San Diego. I have to try. You can take your pizza to the beach with wonderful views ,oh they also have wings, there ok ,buy pizza is way better

I was so pleasantly surprised when we had our family here with our little kids. The patio in the back was a safe place for our family to get together. Larissa was so sweet and kind. Very great girl. Give her a raise!

This is my spot I love to visit after a long days work in Ocean Beach. The food is incredible and I tend to always run into a familiar face. They just installed two more big open windows for more air flow. That had previously been my only down side that during the summers, the inside seating would get hot. Now with these new windows, there is a perfect ocean breeze. Will definitely be coming back! Update: Yesterday was the first time trying the Pesto Special over at Pizzeria Luigi OB. Yep, it sure is special!! Once upon a time I thought they were only pizza. Wrong. I then found out about their crafted sandwiches. Now I’m diving into their pasta dishes. This Pesto Special is penne with tomatoes, chicken, sun-dried tomatoes & pesto sauce. It’s another great meal option to go along with their incredible pizza. Bonus tip: the back patio. I’ve said too much. 😁 Another update: HOLY MOUTHGASMS!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m sure a lot of you all are aware of the amazing pizza at Pizzeria Luigi (corner of Newport/Bacon). I didn’t know they had sandwiches and desserts until I tried some yesterday. The sandwich i got was their take on a muffeletta ( New Orleans style Italian sandwich). Michael G explained to me they make the foccacia in house as well as the pistachio pesto. It has mortedella, salami and provolone as well as their house made giardinera spread. It’s my new favorite sandwich!! Then if things couldn’t get any more pleasurable... their handmade crispy treat sent me over the top! I’m still drooling and can’t wait till the next time I order it.

Google
This place delivers the Absolutely Perfect New York slice and is open late. Pizza by the slice is genius because you can get every flavor you want and that we did. We also got the square slice, but truly the gold is in their slices in the case. They have all the hits and some really great flavor combos at an affordable price.

Google
Pizza is very good here, and great place to sit for 20 minutes and eat. Issue for people needing vegan slices is, there's only vegan slices about 30% of the times I walk in there which is from noon till 8pm. So often I don't try and go, especially since parking is tough. I wish they wpuld freeze some vegan. Mini pies and through them in freezer so you could just get pizza when u want it because after a while you do t make a point to go here

Google
Everyone seemed to enjoy the wings but the server didn’t know which wings were which. The calzone was burnt and the marinara sauce made me sick, I can still taste it after brushing my teeth. The beer choices were limited. If you want wings, take them and go. I won’t be back. And who is Che & Chloe inc? I prefer to see the name of the restaurant on my charge card. 🤮

Google
They have been “out” in of Ranch for months now. What kind of pizza place doesnt have ranch??? I live in OB and am seriously considering my options. Pizza is usually good but don’t expect a smile from anyone working behind the counter. Ask for it to-go? Oh expect them to ignore you. 🤦‍♂️

Google
Average, at best, NY style thin crust pizza. Anybody giving the pizza here over three stars here is just being an easy grader. There is nothing special about this pizza. You've had it a million times. Atmosphere is fun though, so four instead of three stars overall.

Yelp
Skate and Surf vibes for sure. Good pizza , cold beer, legit service. Must try pizza place if you're cruising the beach.

Yelp
So/so. Stopped for a quick lunch on our visit to San Diego. Nothing seemed to be wiped down as every table we looked at had crumbs / was sticky. High hairs were filled with crumbs as well. We came on a Monday and it was very slow so not sure why it seemed so dirty. Ordered 4 different types of pizza and they were all okay. Nothing to die for, but nothing was bad. Asked what beer they had canned and got a menu but the employee told me "a lot we don't have anymore so just ask" which was weird to me. Maybe time to update the menus. Tried to order cheese curds but they were out. Service was great and friendly. Food was okay, beer was good.

Yelp
Our visit is best summed up by my six-year-old who pondered aloud to herself, "How do they make the pizza so good?" (It's also approved by me: an east coast pizza snob)

Yelp
Peter and Hailey were so sweet tonight during the rush. There was a miscommunication and they fixed it quickly and effortlessly. Shout out to these superstars! The crime scene pizza and the pesto pizza were super fire!!!! They had great pizza great, vibes, and great attitudes! Thank you pizza lu's!!!

Yelp
Excellent pizza and this from a New Yorker Great crust and flavor. This place and Bronx are the jam.
google avatar

Rebecca P.

Yelp
Crust was so thin it couldn't hold together. Toppings were fairly tasty but not great. At $4.18 per slice, prices are standard for these expensive times but I would still pass. Bottom line: They are skimping and it shows.
google avatar

Yelp
Mediocre pizza, rude staff, dining area definitely needed cleaning. Overall, lots of better options in Ocean Beach.

Yelp
The service at Luigi's in OB is top notch. The bartenders are A+, the drinks are great and the pizza is classic. This is a must stop during a day or night out in OB. If you can't get a seat at the bar, the outdoor patio is fabulous. For a special treat order the cheese nugs. Yum!

Yelp
When I'm in San Diego, I always try to eat at Pizzeria Luigi. Since I'm not local, I've only had the chance to order the Frenchie and the Spicy Kevo. They're both great. In addition to outstanding flavor combinations, the fresh hand-tossed dough and high quality cheese really stand out.

Yelp
Review #1000¡¡!! Luigi is a common name in Southern Italy and Sicily, where the claimed origins of pizza emanate. It's appropriate to call this unique establishment Pizzeria Luigi located near Ocean Beach. You have a number of options when purchasing slices. For example, two slices with soda, or two slices with beer, or buy a whole pizza! I liked the fun vibe here. The music was great, the setting was casual, and the selection was pretty impressive, too. The toppings are pretty good quality, I think, especially the texture and taste of ricotta cheese on some house pies or slices that represent the whole. My youngest sister was the guide, and she led us to her favorite spots in the area. We had the family doggie with us, so pet friendly was a consideration, too. My spicy slice had pepperoni, jalapeño slices, and ricotta, and the meaty Capone had excellent salami, pepperoni, and meatballs I think. Basically, you pick two, and they reheat them in the big ovens. Voila! Next time we'll split a whole pie for ultimate freshness.

Yelp
Pizzeria Luigi does it again! I sincerely enjoy their other locations at the OB outpost is no exception. It definitely hit the spot for late night cravings with an exclusive plethora of options by the slice in their case. Service was friendly and welcoming. The slices were heated up quickly and of quality. Lastly, the vibes were excellent, had a blast singing along to the music haha

Lindsay M.

Yelp
They have the BEST slices. Super nice staff. Really cool outdoor patio out back. Seriously, though they have the best slices in San Diego and there's always a wide variety and a specialty deep dish. They even have vegan slices, which are hard to find by the slice and the best around. Been coming here for years and will continue to keep coming. Good job Luigi, keep it up!

Yelp
Yes...it's still Jan 19, and I'm still in Ocean Beach. Clam Chowder to go from Ocean Bar &Grille, and all. But I was told to stop by here for some amazing pizza! Who am I to pass on such a great invitation! So I stopped in to grab a couple slices, and a cold beer. The place was not too crowded, but it's OB so every night is a celebration! The service was great, and my order was taken quickly, and easily. I love Latitude 33 Blood Orange IPA so I had one (maybe two ) along with my slices. You can't beat the 2 slices + beer for $11! So I had a meat slice, and a spinach/mozzarella slice. Everything was awesome including my seat so I could check out the city action! Great time all around!
google avatar

Rachelle D.

Yelp
It was meh. As others have said, not the cleanest environment and nothing is wiped down in between customers. Bathrooms were gross. Shared a slice and that was about enough. Pizza was okay but the idea of it being reheated doesn't float my boat and we asked for a side of marinara which they give you ice cold. Not in line with hot pizza. Wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Visited this spot 3 times during our stay in OB. The best pizza in OB by far and one of the top in SD. Highly recommend going during normal hours as at night the quality takes a hit due to it being so busy.

karen g.

Yelp
This pizza place is another of my favorites. They are easily compared to Bronx because these pizza makers understand thin crust also has to have good taste. The crust is just as delicious as the toppings. The ambience is welcoming and beautiful surroundings when all is in bloom. I'm glad I don't live near either pizza place or we'd all be on a first name basis and I would weight many pounds. I love pizza now because I've found these places, too many pizza places make different type pizzas, covering toppings with cheap cheese really chaps my hide. Thin crust with cheese and sauce and toppings on top of that? The best!!! You can fully appreciate the crust & toppings. Check them out, they also offer beer, good deal!

Tommy D.

Yelp
Good pizza here! Along with the 2 slices and a drink deal for 9 bucks, (15 bucks for an alcoholic beverage). I go here after I surf everytime.
google avatar

Yelp
My new favorite pizza spot in OB. Tasty thin crusts, sauce, cheese, toppings. Tonight tried the Diablo on Detroit crust and it was really tasty - very spicy and flavorful on a focaccia like crust. The vegetarian pizzas are really good, too!

Yelp
We ordered pizza, stromboli, pesto, and beer. The lady helping us got our order wrong and over charged us $11 when we got to the pay counter. We were very calm. We asked to see the itemized order on the screen. She told us to "pay it or get the fuck out because there was a long line." We were quite and looked confused. Someone from the back came out and retook and fixed our order. We told him the lady was possibly high. My group of friends do New York style pizza reviews across the city and have spreadsheets that rate pizzerias. This place is by far the worst. I understand the NY tough attitude like they do at Bronx Pizza, but at Pizzeria Luigi the worker was extremely out of the line. I took a few bites of the pizza. We also ordered Stromboli and Pesto but decided to leave and not wait for it because we couldn't stand to be in her presence. Also, she did tell us to get the eff out so we did. We will be disputing this at the bank.

Yelp
Emily is great.! Pizza is good! I like the deep dish pizza the best! Laid back vibes...

Yelp
Going to see the Iron Maidens at the Holding Company. Need a bite to eat before the show. We hit up Luigi's for some of their bomb as pizza. The taking our order explained all the different choices and there was vegan options too. Great seats facing the street so we could people watch while chowing down. My 3 slices were so good! Perfectly crispy, very flavorful and surprisingly good mix of flavors and ingredients! You def need to stop here!

Yelp
Went last night for a date night and got a couple slices of pizza and my husband got a beer and I got a glass of wine. I asked where the bathroom was and was told they currently aren't working. Ok I can understand if they were having bathroom issues but the bartender ended up telling me she had a bucket for me to use. Wtf! At that point we left and with that gross unprofessional rude comment I'll never give them my business again. You just lost local OB customers!
google avatar

Hailey K.

Yelp
Great pizza great service and a great atmosphere. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah the music is always great too...Emily is probably the best bartender in ob.. 10/10 always
google avatar

Troy T.

Yelp
Quick fix for a pizza slice by Ocean Beach. I mistakenly thought the beer was on tap, got a can of a hazy ipa that wasn't so good. They appear to have a bar for mixed drinks. The pizza offerings have something for everyone vegans included, they reheat for you before serving. Get in where you fit in seating, the place isn't wiped down regularly. There is a lot of traffic in and out, but they get you food quickly. In the back away from Newport Ave they have an outdoor seated area. The pizza is good, with a decent sauce and they don't overdo the toppings.
google avatar

Tom R.

Yelp
I swear I can't make this up. Just the worst service I've ever experienced!! I come in for a beer & slice! Just an ordeal. So not necessary. Luigi should go back to Italy!! Bc of Guy Fieri he blew up, COMPLETELY unwarranted!! The pizza sucks, & he SUCKS worse. He should be ashamed of this crackhouse!!! The place is FILTHY TOO
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Tasty pizza! We got a slice of margherita and it was so delicious we ended up getting a second slice. The cheese was so flavorful! Overpriced, but not ridiculously so. The person behind the counter was acting pretty strange and the interior was very hot and smoky (like from food burning), but other than that, things were good.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
The pizza is always good here. Definitely my go to spot for pizza in OB. But this review is for their back yard bbq. We tried the skirt steak during the OB restaurant walk on Tuesday and it was AMAZING! So good that we came back in tonight to try it. Absolutely delicious. :) Thank you to the two grill masters working magic. Also want to give a shout-out to the bartender Larisa that helped us out back. She was awesome the whole night. Her and the rest of the team out back are what bring repeat customers back. If you haven't hung out on the back patio, check it out! Super cool spot and the food and service are all on point!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
This is by far the best pizza you'll find in OB. Kinda floppy when you order by the slice but you can get it nice and crispy/well done when ordering a whole pizza. Better beer selection than Pizza Port.

H N.

Yelp
I would avoid pizza Luigi in OB if I was you. The cashier was obviously on drugs or something; and if she wasn't she must be naturally rude. She got our order wrong and we asked her to repeat or show our order very politely. She said "just pay or get the fuck out". Who would say this to customers? If I was my younger self I would of caused a scene and said something back, but I'm a peaceful person now Thank goodness for this day and age with technology feedback/review systems and especially for Yelp so that I can leave a dissatisfied comment and do this the civil way. Thankfully another employee came out and confirmed she (see pic) got the order wrong. At least he was nice. OB pizza Luigi review 0/10 if I can on Yelp.

Violet B.

Yelp
Pizza here is so good. Thin crust deliciousness. Staff is nice and it's a really good price.
google avatar

Marisa M.

Yelp
Classic NY style pizza, but they won't raise an eyebrow if you ask for ranch. So basically heaven. Everything was delicious, and they had pretty fast service despite being busy. There was plenty of seating but honestly I think taking it down to the beach is your best bet!

Avalee C.

Yelp
I am beginning to have serious doubts about Guy Fieri's recommendations. He's had a couple of San Diego restaurants on his show and none of them where great. Luigi's Pizza in OB is a weird place. Employees try but are a little cool, place is ok but not sparkling clean. Pizza is ok but not great. I don't get it. What am I missing?

Yelp
Mediocre Za...Bad Tudes from Staff...Horrible Ink everywhere. If this wasnt on the the beach one would think you were in the 909 or better yet Santee. Trashy AF

Jeffrey K.

Yelp
Got a half Mona Lisa half El Diablo. The Mona Lisa half was pretty tasty, but the El Diablo was basically Sriracha sauce on crust. Very little cheese and no toppings at all. I mean no sausage, pepperoni or meatball, just hot crust with hot sauce,. Diasppointing.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Amazing spot for the best pizza in Mission Beach. Slices bigger than my face with some extra delicious beers. Steps from the beach. Excellent vibes and prices that are perfect. We've been coming here for years and look forward to each visit. The pepperoni and jalapeño slices were epic.
google avatar

Chad S.

Yelp
It's not hard to make a decent slice of pizza sucks there's not one good slice on Newport grew up here my whole life watched it come and go. It's a no-brainer to have a slice right here in Newport wish they could do a little better. Please step it up.
google avatar

Erica Nicole A.

Yelp
This place is awesome and the staff are awesome. I love all the different slices and it's great they are often open late. They treat all guests with respect and make sure everyone is taken care of. These reviews that are childishly name calling a manager for doing his job when telling two chicks to leave with open containers are whack. It had nothing to do with them being black, it was the manager trying to not risk their liquor license and business by kicking out someone they don't know if they're old enough to drink or not bringing outside/open booze in. I don't understand how those immature chicks don't get that the manager was well within his rights to not serve them and kick them out. No one is racist there.

Zach C.

Yelp
The pizza choices are awesome! Super good flavors an crispy thin kinda crust. Really good pizza and service, they serve the pizza hot and fresh! So glad we got to try this place!

Mr. A.

Yelp
Pizza here is great but please guys the dog policy need to me addressed. The person next to me who was special needs had his care giver protect him from the dog bc he was super allergic. The the straw was that a man's dog was not on lease and walked to ever table put its snout on the table then walk in to the kitchen area. Come on.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
The pizzas here were large, but for the price definitely on the expensive side. I wasn't a huge fan of the taste or textures. The flavor was a bit lacking and it felt a bit dry and cardboard-y. I did eat it since I was starving after a long day, but otherwise I might have had trouble getting it down.
google avatar

Louisa N.

Yelp
2 slices and a beer for $11. I like to come and chill on the patio. They have fire pits on in the evenings and an outdoor bar. Friendly staff and good vibes.
google avatar

Kai M.

Yelp
Fat man behind the counter owns it! You'd think this guy has three arms the way he moves. Incredible service and even better pizza
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
The pizza is really good, staff super friendly and it's a very laid back vibe. Try the El Chango cerveza one of my all time favs.
google avatar

Cecee N.

Yelp
Stopped by Luigi's patio for their skewer special yesterday and just had to stop by again tonight. The beef, blue fin, and salmon skewers were all sooooo tasty!! 10/10

Stephanie D.

Yelp
We were starving and wanted a good NY style pizza. This place hit the spot. One pizza fed the three of us for multiple meals.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
To sum it up: great location, great service, great pizza, great experience. Pizza is consistently good! They have a number of different pizzas that they serve by the slice. Their Buffalo chicken pizza is top tier! Also, you can't go wrong with a standard pepperoni pizza. The staff is the most impressive aspect of this pizza joint! They are super friendly and go above and beyond in providing speedy and efficient service.
google avatar

Trinity C.

Yelp
Have stopped by here a few times since it is one of the only places open super late at night. The interior is usually pretty dirty and packed with people who have just got back from the bars. Both times I've been there has been no place to sit. The pizza itself is not the best ever. It's pretty dry and lacks flavor. However, the cheese slice is the best deal there and does the trick if you are hungry late at night. I would not recommend the buffalo chicken slice. The chicken was super chewy and not good. Overall, this place does the trick if you are looking for a late night place to grab a greasy pizza slice, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it otherwise.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The pizza is good, the wings are trash (not crispy and way too soggy). The servers and bartenders are rude, they don't even attempt to make an effort. There is one woman who works here, she's been here from the start, she's lovely. The rest of the entitled little Doyle's would do better to start working for the oil industry; sucking the life and happiness out of earth would probably suit them, as customer service is not their strong point.
google avatar

Arturo A.

Yelp
Awesome a little spot right next to my house! The pizzas are delicious and served pretty quickly! Good selection of beer and the service is always friendly and welcoming! I travel a lot for work but whenever I'm home, it's one of my go to spots!
