30 Snappy, Standout Hot Dogs Around NYC

"Nominally, El Mercadito is a Mexican pizzeria, applying taco toppings to yeasty rounds of dough and thrusting them in the stacked oven till done. But the menu’s roster also includes tacos and various other tasty antojitos. Some of them, like this hot dog quesadilla, are hand-patted from fresh masa." - Robert Sietsema

The Hottest New Restaurants in Queens, July 2024

"A Jackson Heights mini mall is now home to a Mexican pizzeria. At El Mercadito, Mexico City-born Hilario Morales, who’s also behind Homemade Taqueria, uses the thin crust pie as a deliriously extensive canvas for Mexican dishes. An al pastor pizza is topped with chipotle sauce and fresh pineapple; a chile relleno pie has quarters of the stuffed pepper laid out among roasted poblanos; a birria pizza is dappled with avocado sauce. Mexico City-style fried quesadillas, flautas, and taquitos round out the menu." - Caroline Shin, Eater Staff

El Mercadito Mexicano - Review - Jackson Heights - New York - The Infatuation

"Get your nails done, then grab some chorizo pizza. Located in a Jackson Heights shopping center that’s also home to a salon, an aquarium store, and a tattoo parlor, El Mercadito Mexicano specializes in thick-crust pies with toppings that range from elote and birria to your more traditional cheese and pepperoni. The Mexican-inspired options are the best, but they’re all pretty heavy, especially the al pastor with its blanket of pork, pineapple, and creamy chipotle sauce. One slice is enough. This counter-service spot also does some decent tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, and they have a few tables where you can sit and watch people filter in and out of the mini mall. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute" - Bryan Kim

18 Outstanding Tacos to Try in NYC

"This newcomer to the Mexican food scene at the Jackson Heights and Elmhurst border was one of the first places to bring Mexican pizzas to the city. But it also has an extensive roster of tacos, partly as a result of its connection to the Homemade Taqueria chain. Tacos are described as taquitos because of their slightly smaller size, and sold in fours though you can mix them up, and variety meats like ear, tongue, and stomach are available." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Really great pastor burrito & this is coming from someone who eats Al pastor religiously (at least 3x week). The tacos are also fantastic here. They have traditional tacos and also special tacos with a couple cuts of steak on a tortilla.

Google
(No sabo, sorry), yeah you want to go here. This place is 10/10. They are easily the tastiest, best quality place around with a unique flavor you will repeatedly keep coming back for more (I have). AND with prices very competitive with others in the neighborhood, in a relative sense it won't cost any MORE to try out just how right I am. Seriously, try this place and have a new favorite. You're welcome.

Google
Fantastic tacos. I came here because I saw a Rob Martinez review, and wow, the tacos were fantastic. Some of the best al pastor I've had in the city with delicious pineapples. The chuleta was very tasty, too. The guy working there is really nice. I will be coming back soon.

Google
I came here early for the breakfast and it was delicious. It was chilaquiles rojos con huevo (chilaquiles with red sauce and egg) and it was really good. I came here again the next day and I got a slice of their Birria Pizza which was also really delicious. The crust was crispy and the guacamole sauce in it was good. (Jan 2025 update: yall they took away the pizza😞)

Had each one of the califa tacos with everything on it from the salsa bar and almost cried they were that good. $12 for 3 tacos with tender meat, perfectly cooked.

So I saw a video of this place on social media and I had to come and try it. Upon approaching the front of this unassuming taco spot it doesn't appear any different than the dozens of other local spots. That is far from reality. Upon walking into this market style location with other businesses located inside I was greeted by Brayam (Brian) the owner who's very hospitable and friendly young man. Now to the Tacos. These tacos are not prepared in your typical style of tacos as in Texmex or the catered to American approach with all the other toppings. This style (Estilo) is as simple as it gets. Fresh corn tortillas, Meat and a wedge of lime. Salsa bar on the side where you can add red or green salsa, beans onion or cilantro mix. Simple but delicious and well worth it. Fresh made on the spot so be prepared to wait about 10 minutes or so for the Estilo style taco. For any lover of food or especially tacos I urge you to come and try this hidden gem out. Tell him the crazy Greek Dino (Griego loco) sent you. You can thank me after you eat. I will try to add pictures but maps keeps crashing whenever I attempt it.

Wow!!! Loved their inventive pizzas. Had the al pastor and elote slices and would highly recommend both. Especially good with the salsa added on top. Very nice that they had by the slice.

Google
I thought I have had amazing pizza in my life. But then I had this spot's corn zucchini slice with the white sauce and another level of pizza was unlocked. This pizzeria is in "Roosevelt Shopping Mall" with plenty of seating and friendly staff. I cannot stop raving about this place.

Yelp
Can't decide between tacos and pizza? This is your spot. However, the friendly counter guy seemed more enthusiastic about the non-pizza selections. I enjoyed the al pastor and nopales tacos, accompanied by exemplary red and green sauces. Chorizo pizza works so well I wonder why it's not more common (or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places). And if you want cool down from the hotter sauces the jamaica drink is refreshing.

Yelp
It is located inside a building, like a mini mall. There are only 4 tables. The owner were super nice and find table for us to dine in. We ordered 1 large pie pizza, 1 large al pastor Pizza, and 2 tacos. The food was ok. Crust is a bit thick. Plenty of cheese for regular pie. It would be extra cheese in most places. I didnt really like the al pastor Pizza. I felt that it doesn't really go together. I prefer al pastor to be in the taco.

Yelp
BLUF: Interesting pizza, OK burritos. El Mercadito Mexicano notably offers Mexican-style pizza along with other typical fare. We visited to order an Al Pastor pizza slice and a shrimp burrito for a total of $19. The shrimp burrito ($13.95) had a mix of overcooked and perfectly cooked shrimp, but could have used more ingredients in addition to shrimp, beans, and rice. We've had better burritos. The shrimp burrito came with vials of guacamole, green sauce, and red sauce. The Al Pastor slice was flavorful, although I found the pizza crust to be a bit chewy, and pork to be chewy and dry. The slice came with a small vial of guacamole. I would return to try other pizza slices.

Yelp
After seeing multiple social media posts about the pizza at Mercadito Mexicano, I was excited to give it a try. They have an online ordering system, which is easy and convenient to use. It's a great place to order from if you are undecided since you can get Mexican food and pizza. We couldn't decide which pizza to get, so we ordered a half Tinga and half Chile Relleno pie and ordered the Birria Taquitos and Pastor Sopes. The food was at our door within 30 minutes of ordering. The Birria Taquitos had four mini tacos stuffed with meat and the consommé on the side. These were very tasty, and the tortilla held up to the weight and moistness of the beef. Hands down, these are 5 out of 5 stars. The Pastor Sopes were 3 out of 5. The Pastor's pork was fatty and had an overpowering pork flavor, making this dish not very appealing. The masa for the sope was delicate and not too dense. I would order these again without the pork Pastor. The pizza crust had good flavor and a nice snap. The Tinga side of the pie came with shredded lettuce on top of the chicken. The Chile Relleno was cut into four large pieces, which I would have preferred to be cut into smaller pieces to cover a larger piece of the pie. The toppings were very flavorful and unexpectedly good on a pizza. The toppings were a bit heavy/wet for the pizza, giving it a soggy factor. Keep in mind when selecting your toppings. Definitely a keeper!

Yelp
Absolutely stunning tacos. Perfectly executed the Califa style. The Salsa Rojo from their little Salsa bar was excellent. Owners a really nice and friendly guy too! Highly recommended.

Yelp
I need everyone to understand how essential it is to find a Mexican spot that does FRESH TORTILLAS. That's already a game changer. In this area, there is only one other place that does it fresh. Apparently, the tortilla press is from Mexico and hard to bring to the states. In this economy, we need a place like this to keep our spirits alive.

Yelp
This review is based on my experience in person and delivery. I found this place on Instagram and was excited to try the different pizza flavors. The taco Al pastor pizza is my favorite and chorizo is my second favorite. The elote pizza comes with zucchini and a side of sour cream. It is different, not my cup of tea but definitely those who like weird combinations. I ordered a pizza for delivery and it came quickly. The pie was fresh and delicious, it's very filling too! They give you salsas (red and green) and guacamole on the side as well. They also have breakfast food and traditional Mexican food (tacos, burritos, etc). Keep in mind that the location is a shared space within a mini mall. I love that I finally found my pizza spot in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Great tacos. This place is a small shop off the street. The young man that works there is very nice. They also make pizzas with taco toppings like Al pastor. So good. They has specials too look at the board outside.

Yelp
I think I finally found my pizza place! First of all, do not be intimidated by their pizza selection because I certainly was. Staff explain their pizza selection which made it easier. Me and my wife began with their Al pastor pizza and it was a 10/10 nothing to add really you have to try it yourself to understand where I stand. From then we tried their Mexican corn and chorizo pizza. The corn pizza was good but different something I never had before weirdly good even but not my favorite 7/10 that said I would get it again PS do not skip on the white sauce as it adds to flavor. The chorizo pizza was solid you can't go wrong with it but the bell peppers added was an unexpected flavor 8.5/10 Clean and cute Mexican decor despite of the shared space with the mini mall.

Yelp
I ordered a pizza and I arrived to pick it up the server said they did not receive my order even though I had a confirmation email and my credit card was charged. basically told me if I wanted anything I would need to order again and pay again because she saw nothing on her end. I had ordered through their website. No where on your website said that pizza won't be available until 3pm. Once I realized she wouldn't or couldn't help in any way I tried emailing and calling number and got no response.

Yelp
Been told that this place has decided to stop serving its spectacular Mexican pizza and devolve into a run of the mill joint. We'll miss it, since we won't be eating there again. hoping they can be convinced to chance their minds.
