20 Salads Around D.C. That Don’t Feel Like a Chore to Eat | Eater DC

"It’s hard to get a better Greek salad around D.C. than the one from fast-casual favorite Plaka Grill, especially when topped with lamb-spiked, Chicago-style gyro meat. The Village Salad eschews lettuce for simple chunks of vegetables and feta, as is traditional, and Plaka manages to find decent tomatoes even in the dead of winter. One salad can easily account for two meals. — M.F."

Google
I am incredibly dissatisfied with the food's quality, quantity, and flavors. I can make better skewers at home. For $17.99 + tax, I expect to receive more meat per order, but instead, I received a mediocre amount (see pictures). That's not even one full skewer. Most of the box was filled with sides. I absolutely regret spending $60 here and do not recommend this place.

Google
The food was pretty decent, but nothing too special. I ordered the grilled chicken gyro, but the meat was pretty dry. However, I did enjoy the efficiency of the restaurant, laying out all of the utensils and to-go boxes in the open. I recommend this place if you want a quick bite to eat! I would maybe skip the chicken though.

I ordered Take out for the first time this evening At Plaka end enjoyed my Greek salad. Vegetables were super fresh and pita bread was also tasty. I enjoyed the tzatziki sauce very much. GREAT flavor. Only issue was that the dressing only came half full for a large salad but I improvised 🙂 I would definitely give them a try.

Google
Plaka Grill is amazing! Very healthy and delicious Greek cuisine expertly prepared and served by truly awesome and kind professionals. Highly recommended, 10/10 experience! Hope to see you again soon! ✨

Google
It’s a nicer casual spot - with the best falafel wrap I’ve had (ever). Fries were also perfectly crisp, ambiance is cute but not too fancy. Will definitely be coming back.

Google
3.5 stars SERVICE: Very good and professional. FOOD: My opinion on the spanakopita is something I would not buy again. The taste and texture were weird, I couldn't finish it. I can't put my taste buds on it. It seemed more oily and maybe undercooked? The phyllo dough was crispy, but the inside was weird. Compared to other spanakopita I've tasted, this one comes in last place. The Beef gyro (they made for me since I don't eat lamb) was delicious. That is something I would purchase again. Too much salad though, one or more bit of beef would make it perfect and fit the price. BATHROOMS: Unisex bathrooms. Very clean. Just the extractor fan needs cleaning. But besides that, very clean. EATING TABLES: The two booths that were free had not been cleaned. So I sat in one that was not clean. But I didn't check the tables, so I can't comment on them. PARKING: Tons of parking. BE AWARE: As soon as I walked out, I was surprised by a man asking for money and two more sitting at the next store, who also stuck their hands out. SUMMARY: I will definitely go back to taste more of their menu. I see more stars for this place. It's a simple but nice place. Hopefully, next time, they give it that tiny bit more attention with the tables, and the spanakopita will taste better. RETURN FACTOR: 💯 % RECOMMEND A FRIEND FACTOR: After the next visit, I will know.

Google
Having had a flavorful experience at Plaka Grill in the small, funky space in Vienna, I was motivated to try out Plaka in Falls Church when I was in FC on business one afternoon last week. The shotgun interior of the Falls Church location is much larger and borderline sterile in comparison. My appetizer, lentil soup, had a broth with the character of warm water. The ingredients were equally disappointing. I was hoping for a warm, aromatic lentil soup with depth of flavor on the chilly, rainy afternoon, but that was not the case. The pita served with it was ersatz; no pocket means it's not pita. While it had the shape and appearance of pita, it was just doughy flatbread. I intended to order their Chicago-style gyro after the soup, but the soup's lack of flavor caused me to abandon that idea and leave.

This review is based on my experience as a consumer and then as a Chef. I decided to spend my day off in Vienna/I decided to try a few things. It's a beautiful town, I have to say, it's similar to some places I've been to in Europe. Date: Saturday, March 22, 2025 Time: 9 am to 5 pm Ratings (0-10, 10 being the best): We started the beautiful morning at 9 am (a beautiful day) SECOND STOP by recommendation and surprise Plaka Grill www.plakagrill.com 110 Lawyers Rd NW, Vienna, VA 22180 1) Shrimp with fries 10/10 2) Pilaf rice bowl with Chicago gyro, shrimp, feta, olives, and hummus 20/20 3) Chicken Souvlaki - Grilled all-white meat chicken skewer with Greek fries (the fries were excellent)

Yelp
An amazing option for Greek food! I am a regular at their Vienna location, but every now and then I find myself in Falls Church and cannot resist. The size of this spot is much larger with the decorations bring you back to the old country ... and it offers seating outside as well. And the staff (like in Vienna) is always friendly. But frankly, I came for the food. And it is always great (as expected)! I have so many favorites. If I am here for lunch, I usually opt for a "bowl" with greens, melitzanosalata dip (eggplant, amazing), and pork souvlaki. For dinner, I rotate between a Plaka Gyro sandwich meal (with fries and a drink) and the Roasted Chicken meal (with 2 sides). However, they periodically offer a dinner special which I highly recommend you sample. At the top of the list is the lamb shank ... which is so tender and tasty! (Mouth is watering right now). Give it a try. It will not disappoint.

Yelp
One of the best gyro's in the area. I've actually never been to the restaurant to try it fresh, only ubereats. Located in the heart of Falls Church so it's definitely worth stopping by. I'll need to stop by the restaurant and potentially try other items but until then it's the best gyro I've had in the area, in my opinion.

Yelp
My son and I came here to pickup up chicken souvlaki sandwiches and 2 platters on New Year's Eve (Dec. 2023) after a nearby restaurant closed early for the holiday. Was delighted that Plaka Grill was still open! It's a lovely space with lots of tables and room to wait. Service was friendly. Parking is also easy and plentiful in the strip mall lot. We'll definitely return!

Yelp
Not sure what happened to my previous review, but it's been a while since I've been to Plaka Grill! I was craving for a Chicago-style gyro, so I came here for a late lunch - I ordered their Chicago Gyro, which came with a lamb & beef gyro meat that was perfectly cooked, sliced red onions, tzatziki sauce, and sliced tomatoes in a pita bread. I did ask for extra red onions and opted out of the lettuce, and requested the gyro meat to be well-done/crispy. The pita came generously filled, albeit the pita being a little dry. This wrap still satisfied my craving! Staff were welcoming and friendly, and there were plenty of seats inside - I was surprised at how spacious this place is, compared to their Vienna location. Located in Falls Plaza, and there's plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. +Chicago Gyro +dry pita bread +friendly service +located in Falls Plaza +plenty of parking in shared plaza lot

Yelp
Came here cause we were craving hummus and man what a great find. The food portion was large and filling and their meat was super flavorful. Whether it was the beef or lamb, it was packed with flavor and their yogurt sauce was delicious. Both the plate and the wrap were delicious. Only knock was the hummus could've been a bit more flavorful. The pita though was soft, fluffy and warm. I will say I feel the plaka style did not really add much. Probably would've been better to just get fries on the side. Overall though would be a 4.5 so 4 for now but we'll be back again and can easily see this being updated to be a full 5.
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
Delicious food! I loved their bowl and especially the gyro meat. The tzatziki is also good. I only wish I liked their hummus more--it barely had flavor. I'd definitely go back though, maybe hummus would be better next time!
google avatar

Caitlin C.

Yelp
Finding a good tzatziki nowadays seems challenging so I'm starting this review by saying the tzatziki was so good!!! Perfect consistency and flavor. The pita was so soft and all the dips were delicious. Personal favorites were the tzatziki and Tyrokafteri. The chicken souvlaki was so juicy and tender - I don't love getting grilled chicken out because a lot of times it's too dry or bland but this was so good. Especially dipped in the dips! Definitely a quite bite place and nothing fancy but you'll get good food here for sure.
google avatar

Farhat K.

Yelp
Some solid gyro sandwiches. It was filling and tasty. Lots of meat so they don't skimp and the fries were good. If you're gonna get a gyro, might as well go where they specialize in it. The have inside and outside seating and good amount of parking which is great. Glad I got to come out here and try the food.

Yelp
Plaka Grill food is delicious. Great place for gyro, souvlaki, greek salads, hummus, etc. The food comes out fairly quickly and hot. The prices are pretty reasonable for this area. Definitely recommended if you are craving some Greek food!

Juliana D.

Yelp
My favorite Greek takeout in the area. Love the zucchini fritters and Greek-style gyro.

Yelp
I've been visiting this Plaka location for a few years now and I always have a great meal here. Recently visited this past weekend to use a birthday bogo coupon. We ordered the mixed grill after not realizing this was even on the menu. This came with chicken and pork souvlaki as well as bifteki (lamb/beef patty) and loukaniko (pork sausage) for about $22. We also got a side of veggies here. All of the meat was great, I really liked the bifteki and the loukaniko. I'm not a huge sausage fan as I hate the overly processed taste but this tasted like real sausage so it was good. We did order a side of veggies luckily because this meal did not come with any sort of side at all, not even a side salad, which is disappointing given the price. The veggies were $6+ which is a little steep. It did come with pita but no tzatziki was even given. we also ordered the beef souvlaki entree which was good as usual. The side salad was plenty and the oven roasted potatoes are always amazing. They're lemony and doused in olive oil and so flavorful. This did come with tzatziki. I went to ask for another tzatziki for the mixed grill meal and I was surprised when I was charged $1.48 for this. I would think an entree should come with a complimentary tzatziki, especially the mixed grill, but I guess I was mistaken. This was disappointing give. That we paid $22 for this and there were no sides or anything. Even with the bogo coupon, we still spent about $34 which isn't terrible but that means normally it would have been about $50 for two to dine at a fast casual establishment. Overall, the food was still good but giving 4 stars due to the pricing and lack of extras given with the meal. The interior is always nice here and the space is wide open unlike the counterpart location in Vienna. Parking is also easy with plenty in the strip mall lot. I do recommend for the food but be wary as it is a little pricey.
google avatar

Clare O.

Yelp
Super disappointed. I ordered the plaka platter with what I thought was a side salad, but it was a giant salad and little bits of meat. The meat was old, there was just the meat on a bed of lettuce, there wasn't even tzatziki. It did come with pita bread, and the rice pudding was super delicious, but really disappointed with the main entree.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here with a bunch of friends. The reviews on the food were mixed. I ordered the Chicago gyro. It was pretty good. It came solo without any chips or fries (I believe they are extra $) Plaka is an above average Mediterranean eatery.

Ben M.

Yelp
Plaka gave us excellent service and wonderful food in a time of (minor) need. My car broke down in the parking lot while I was in another store. We decided to have lunch here while waiting for help. They gave us free samples, didn't mind how long we sat and the food was top notch. 5/5 stars, would def be back again!

Yelp
Came for the hype. Left satisfied but underwhelmed. The pros: The place was clean and the self service area was well stocked. The Chicago gyro was everything I wanted in a gyro. Toasted pita, generous feta and tzatziki, and juicy, well seasoned meat. I would come back for the gyro alone. The cons: The fries were abysmal. Limp, undercooked, and greasy. They came out first, which was nice, but it was quickly apparent that they needed another minute or two or that the oil was not to temp. Additionally, my husband's bowl was surprisingly small for the price. Like, child size. Maybe we just are used to unnecessarily large portions, so let's just say their portions are their portions but those with big appetites be warned. In conclusion, the gyro was worth the hype. The rest of what we ordered, not so much. I'll return for the gyro for sure, but won't be venturing too much further into the menu.

Yelp
Parking is limited but had no issues finding a spot. The interior was nice and clean but more importantly, the food. Saw this on r/nova and tried it out for a quick but good gyro. Haven't had gyros in a hot minute but this absolutely hit the spot. Great, simple food done right and an easy recommendation.

Yelp
CHICKEN SOUVLAKI BOWL - $11.95 I got this with 1/2 rice pilaf and 1/2 greens (just the lettuce and tomatoes) with double hummus dips. Everything was super tasty! You could probably eat the rice on its own if you really wanted to since it's seasoned minimally. Chicken was grilled well - juicy and flavorful. The hummus was creamy and light (the taste wasn't super strong, would prefer a bit more to be honest). The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh! Everything went well together and you can get a lot of flavors all in one bite. Relatively light meal and would recommend! For the price, I would have expected a bit more food. There were only a few pieces of grilled chicken (would have thought there would be more meat) and way too much rice, haha. I'd definitely come back to try something else next time.
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
Gyro fluffed with lettuce to make it appear that there was more meat. Charged for extra meat but received extra lettuce! Done with you.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Some of the best pita/greek sandwiches around. I've went to their other location a lot and usually get the Chicago b/c I like the beef/lamb gyro meat, they do it perfect here. I finally tried their namesake Plaka sandwich, which uses a pork meat, and it was delicious. Appropriately spiced and the texture was great, you can tell they also roasts these on a verticle spit and cut it. I feel like these are still pre-inflation prices and you can get a delicious sandwich for around $11, I will be back.

Nancy P.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I liked the ambience as the tables were far enough apart that I did not feel crowded. I will definitely go back.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Delicious, inexpensive, clean, friendly counter-service restaurant. I've been coming here for years.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
plaka grill dishes out a satisfying "Chicago gyro" with delightfully crispy meat. While the portion could be more generous for the $11 price, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the interior is both spacious and clean, food came out fast and fresh. The availability of fountain sodas adds to the positive experience. Excited to explore more of their menu, especially eyeing their desserts and the falafel--seems like they have a lot of promising options!

James R.

Yelp
The food here is amazing. Some of the best street Greek food around. I wish they had a little better vibe - but they can't help the location. A strip mall is a strip mall.
google avatar

Huymy N.

Yelp
Love the food and the service. The new location in Falls Church is very spacious. Best gyro in town
google avatar

Heidi C.

Yelp
This is becoming one of our favorite places. I can find gf options and lots of lean meat and veggies; healthy, tasty, fresh and not boring. It's an easy yes when we want to eat out but not wait forever or spend too much. They are fast but their dine in option is classier than fast food; I love the gorgeous mural and my hubby loves the temp of their AC (bring a sweater if you chill easily!). Fun dinner option with Greek wine if you want it. Delicious and quick delivered, too. The restaurant is clean and tidy; staff are polite and engaged.
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
Some excellent gyro sandwiches. It was substantial and delicious. They don't scrimp on the meat, and the fries were tasty. If you're going to grab a gyro, you may as well go to a place that specializes in it. They feature both indoor and patio seats, as well as plenty of parking. I'm glad I was able to come out here and taste the meal.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Probably the best gyros I've had in the area. The meat is juicy and always fresh and flavorful. I add feta and get the bread grilled. The fries are very tasty when they are fresh.

Eunice P.

Yelp
Good food & friendly service! I live in walking distance so it's a great default when I don't know what to eat
google avatar

Doris M.

Yelp
My boyfriend vetoed my lunch suggestion and we came to Plaka and OMG this is a new favorite! I ordered the Plaka gyro and it was so phenomenal! The tzatziki sauce was so good and was practically licking the little cup. I will be coming back for the Greek lasagna. I wish I took a picture but man trust me this place is crack
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
I have been out of town for a few years and Plaka Grill used to be my favorite Gyro place. So I'm back in town for a quick business trip and made the drive out to Falls Church to get some Greek food! I was surprised to see that Plaka Grill moved down the street. But, their new location is very nice with lots of outdoor seating available, most with umbrellas! The menu looks familiar, and I got the Chicago Gyro that has both Lamb & Beef and made it a "Combo" which includes fries and a fountain drink and found a great seat out on their patio. Food came out quickly and it looked as good as I remembered! Tasted even better! WOW, nothing has changed but the address. I am SO glad I stopped by. You should as well...you can thank me later!
google avatar

HF B.

Yelp
If you are on the Keto meal plan this is the place for you. Many options of very different and delicious meat options. And for your loved one who is not a meat fan, they have many fine options.
google avatar

Emma Z.

Yelp
Plaka Grill is truly an institution. This is a great location to do some grocery shopping and errands, then pop in for a quick meal to-go. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu: bowls, wraps, plates. But definitely try a sandwich with fries in it sometime. That's the ultimate clutch move here. So glad there is this location in Falls Church in addition to the one in Vienna.
google avatar

Soo C.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of Plaka Grill. I've been going to the one in Vienna for several years now, and was very excited to see that they had a location in Falls Church. The food is hot and fresh and delicious. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly and accommodating and I'm so excited to have one so close to my home and will likely be going there at least once a week now. The salads are consistently fresh with the right balance of ingredients and the appetizers are also classic and hit the spot their pita is also soft and delicious. There are many different options to choose from.

Michael L.

Yelp
Food was good but would like larger portions for what you have to pay Grape leaves were extremely small
google avatar

VyVy V.

Yelp
April 2022 - COVID Review: I've been to the Vienna location before so it was nice to hear they opened up another spot. The inside is pretty spacious (seemed a little bigger than Vienna) and the decor was nice. The menu prices are a bit on the steeper side, especially since the portions aren't super big. My husband and I both got bowls and certain toppings would have an upcharge (like olives and feta cheese). It was good but I don't think I would see myself going out of my way to come here very often. The menu does have a number of options though.
google avatar

Guillaume L.

Yelp
Excellent food! Reasonably priced and friendly service. These are by far the best Gyros I've had from the DMV areas. Will definitely return and recommend it!
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Lunch. Located in a strip mall with a Giant. Parking is good. Nice inside, clean and booths are protected for COVID spread. Nice service- order at counter ( no wait staff). Chicken souvlaki pita was 9.25 and was very good - excellent quality ingredients and flavor. Pita was very fresh. Serving size is small. I was still hungry afterwards! Second order was a bowl. Very similar to Cava and I would say the chicken is WAY better.... BUT, again portions are really small (4-5 pieces, less than a chicken breast) and there's limited number of included toppings- others are an additional price. Too much rice ( of course). Total fir 2 meals $23. Wow . Definitely not worth it. Quality-5, quantities- 2, everything else 3. Better options out there for the price unfortunately.
google avatar

Nicolas P.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here awhile ago upon recommendation from my girlfriend and absolutely loved it. I got the calamari to start and the Chicago Gyro (lamb and beef). The flavor of the calamari and the sauce were both excellent and I think would be even better if eaten fresh at the restaurant. The gyro was huge and delicious as well, and definitely a great bang for your buck. Will absolutely order from here again!
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
The food fell short of my expectations, especially considering all the rave reviews. I ordered a custom Chicago gyro bowl and a moussaka with roasted potatoes and fries. The portion of the moussaka was definitely too little for the price ($17.50), even with the two sides (these portions were also on the smaller side). Maybe I'm just used to exorbitant American portions, but I could get more food at an actual sit-down restaurant for a similar price. The gyro bowl is relatively a better value, but the options for toppings were more limited and about half the options cost extra (feta, red peppers, etc). All the food tasted fine, but I don't see myself craving for it in the future. I won't say that I wouldn't visit again, but I would definitely try other things in their menu.

Marianna Y.

Yelp
Service was incredibly nice, the staff was really kind. Though food - I got a Chicago gyro bowl and my bf a wrap + fries, and all of them were very mediocre. Serving size and price was very reasonable though. I think fries were a bit soggy, and my bowl was a bit too greasy. Probably won't go back ):
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This place served me up a GARGANTUAN of a Chicago Gyro (Lamb & Beef), Plaka style. (with fries inside) They give a heaping amount of meat stuffed into the pita bread of goodness. I've been here several times that the service is very speedy, fresh food, and very friendly staff. The fries on their own are amazing as well. They have quite the menu so I'm sure their other food is also very much on point. Very authentic greek smells as soon as you walk in.
google avatar

Larrisa B.

Yelp
Try it to believe it so delicious I had the Greek Salat and the Chicken Souvlaki Dinner.
google avatar

Jared O.

Yelp
We ordered a couple of entrees and a kids meal for delivery last weekend. One of the entrees was missing almost all the meat. It looked like someone messed up, so contacted the restaurant to see if I could get a refund, coupon or gift card. I called three times, left messages, and emailed and I never received a response. The lesson is: order from here and hope all of your meal shows up.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
This is the place I go when I feel like good Mediterranean food. I was picking up for a buddy of mine who can't drive any more. He ordered the chicken wrap and I was craving the

Louis C.

Yelp
The food was amazing and flavorful! I finished my plate was done in under two minutes! The service was great!
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
I normally really like the food here. Good portions and flavorful. Only complaint I have is I ordered the gyro platter recently. The gyro they serve usually consists of large pieces of meat. This time the whole platter was made up of small fatty but dry scraps of meat. Not sure what was going on here. Also ordered a chicken platter. I like all of their sides and the chicken was good - chucks of white meat per usual.
google avatar

Lena C.

Yelp
Ordered here twice and first time they forgot our baklava, and the second time they forgot the other half of the meats. Both times I ordered in the store and I see the person at the register placing my order. I see many people are leaving feedback about things missing in their order. The food is great, a bit salty. Hope you get what you ordered.
google avatar

Deepak D.

Yelp
Literally one of the most worthless restaurants I have ever been to. People are nice. Location is great. That's where it stops. We have tried this place three times. Hoping that eventually we would get a great meal like described by others. We have gone pre-pandemic and post pandemic, and this place never fails to completely disappoint.Go to Our Mom Eugenia in the Mosaic District. That place is awesome.!

Laura D.

Yelp
I love the texture of the food and the people working there were so nice and fast. It is a cute place.

Yelp
Not good. Disappointing. I had high hopes for good Greek food after reading the reviews. Growing up near A Greektown and being a 3rd generation master of the shish (lamb of course), this was poor, poor, poor. The two stars is for the humus and other dips provided. My lamb was dry and inedible. My partner order a $18 meal with 4 pieces of chicken, small. Ridiculous. Choose wisely and dine elsewhere.
